[VIANEN, Jan van (illustrator)].
Landwehr, Emblem and fable books, 216; Praz, pp. 127-131 & 323; De Vries, Emblemata 232 & p. 43. First edition published in the Netherlands of a wholly engraved love emblem book. It contains 45 engraved emblems, with the epigrams in four languages (Latin, Italian, French and Dutch) on the opposite page. Between 1683 and 1714 at least five editions were published at London with the emblems engraved by Philip Ayres, based on the love emblems of Heinsius, Crispyn de Passe's Thronus Cupidinis, and the Amorum Emblemata by Otto Vaenius. The plates of the present edition however, were newly engraved by the Dutch artist Jan van Vianen (ca. 1660-1726), who went to England in his youth. According to Praz, Ayres worked directly from the originals, so his plates were in reverse, while Jan van Vianen probably worked from the Ayres-plates, getting them "right" again. However, Vianen adapted them freely and showed better workmanship and a good sense of perspective which was entirely lacking in Ayres's plates. With bookplates. Only slightly browned with a few small spots and a small tear in the first two leaves. Binding rubbed along the extremities. Overall a very good copy.

NALSON, John.
London: printed for Thomas Dring, 1683. Small quarto (205 x 155 mm). Disbound pamphlet, earlier sew-holes in margins. 5 cm repaired closed tear to title page, title and terminal page soiled, title page and a few other leaves with very light paper faults at extremities without affecting text, generally clean internally with a few sporadic fox marks. A good copy. First edition. The Tory Church of England clergyman John Nalson (1637-1686) "was a prolific writer as well as a country clergyman and his platform, in his own words, was consistently that of a 'true Church of England King's Protestant'. Nalson unswervingly indulged these convictions in a stream of publications which gushed forth in the unsettled years 1677 to 1685. His style was trenchant, hard-hitting, polemical, vivid, and vitriolic" (ODNB). The present publication is part of his anti-Whig writings, claiming that they are republican conspirators, which he ties into tirades against popery, and his own proposals for England. ESTC R16235. The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli 1683 RARE The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli Published by: Chex Henry Wetstein Printed in: 1683 Pages: 229 ----- Features ----- · Rare Early Printing from 1683 · Frontspiece of the Author Condition The book is in good condition. There are no signatures, bookplates or markings of any kind. The book has been bound in three quarter leather binding. The outside boards have some wear and rubbing, as to be expected given the books age. There is some light foxing. This is an early edition, printed in French by Chex Henry Wetstein in 1683. A rare early copy of Machiavelli's classic. Synopsis The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. The descriptions within The Prince have the general theme of accepting that the aims of princes -- such as glory and survival -- can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends. "He who neglects what is done for what ought to be done, sooner effects his ruin than his preservation." ---------- About the Author----- … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAZART, Cornelius
Michiel Knobbaert, by het professen-huys in S. Peeter. 1683 Dutch Hazart Church History JESUIT Missions TORTURE Martyrs America Africa Cornelius Hazart was a 17th-century Dutch Jesuit priest and controversialist writer. His “Ecclesiastical History of the Whole World” delivered on the ‘controversial’ side of church history, as Hazart explored some of the most detestable acts of the church including tortures, imprisonments, wars on religion, and brutal executions, such as drowning, hangings, beheadings, and burnings. This 1683 Dutch printing is taken from the first Antwerp edition from 1667. This book covers church history throughout Europe, including Germany, France, Netherlands, and England, with parts dedicated to the Americas and Africa. This universal church history is unquestionably Hazart’s greatest work and is ideal for historical perspective on Jesuit missions and missionaries around the world, as well as martyrs throughout church history. Dimensioni varie, in folio oblungo, margini esterni 465x365." Knorr von Rosenroth Helmont, Jean Baptiste van.
Sulzbach Holst für Endter, 1683. (34 x 21,5 cm). [Click Below for Full Description]

London: printed for Mark Pardoe, 1683. London: printed for Mark Pardoe,, 1683. The A, B, C, of Publick Oeconomy Octavo (174 x 112 mm), pp. [2], 8, 4 folding plates, [4]. 20th-century marbled paper boards, red spine label lettered in gilt. Woodcut vignette of four thistle-and-crown ornaments to title page; 4 folding tables. Extremities rubbed, contents lightly browned, neat paper repair to fore edge of title leaf, a little chipped along fore-edge, small (10mm.) closed tear to top edge of same, single ink annotation "2" to top margin of title page, presumably previously bound in a pamphlet volume; a very good copy. Rare first edition. Referring to John Graunt's work of 1662, Petty opens with: "The Observations upon the London-Bills of Mortality have been a new Light to the World; and the like Observation upon those of Dublin, may serve as Snuffers to make the same Candle burn clearer. The London-Observations flowed from Bills regularly kept for near One hundred years; but these are squeezed out of Six stragling [sic] London-Bills, out of Fifteen Dublin Bills, and from a Note of the Families and Hearths in each Parish of Dublin; which are all digested into the one Table or Sheet annexed, consisting of Three Parts, markt A, B, C; being indeed the A, B, C, of Publick Oeconomy, and even of that Policy which tends to Peace and Plenty" (p. 1). "According to a letter written to Lord Brouncker on 4 February 1662/3 Petty made these Observations soon after his arrival in Dublin. They were, he wrote, 'not unlike those which Mr Graunt made upon the London Bills of Mortality. I have done … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dimensioni varie, in folio oblungo, margini esterni 465x365." The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli 1683 RARE The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli Published by: Chex Henry Wetstein Printed in: 1683 Pages: 229 ----- Features ----- · Rare Early Printing from 1683 · Frontspiece of the Author Condition The book is in good condition.

Paris: Wear and imperfections from age and use. 1683 Life of Pope Sixtus V Gregorio Leti Counter Reformation ROME Vatican 2in1 Â"While I live, every criminal must dieÂ" Â- Pope Sixtus V A rare biography of the life of Pope Sixtus V by the famous Gregorio Leti. Leti was known to possess an Â'anti-papalÂ' view when it came to his historical writings, however, Â"The Life of Pope Sixtus VÂ" was widely read and translated throughout Europe during the 17th- and 18th-century. Even though Leti was called Â'inexactÂ' by the Catholic Encyclopedia and Â'inaccurateÂ' by the Lutheran church, his historical importance and relevance is well-known and unprecedented. (Mosheim, 194). Pope Sixtus V was revered for his role in eradicating and decreasing corruption and disorder throughout Rome. While he provoked controversy by destroying some iconic antiquities, he rebuilt much of the Papacy, restored economic conditions, and was a central figure in the Counter-Reformation. This 1683 printing of LetiÂ's masterpiece features a portrait of Sixtus V and an illustrated title page vignette. LETI, Gregorio La Vie du pape Sixte cinquième. While he is best remembered for his book ‘Devout Life’, he also wrote an important mystical treatise entitled ‘The Love of God’. This book, like ‘Devout Life’, was written for the laity rather than the clergy of the Catholic Church. It was written to offer a model of God’s love during a time when little love was being shown throughout Europe. This 1683 edition is very rare. It was printed in Barcelona and published in Spanish.
