PSALTERIUM DAVIDIS
Antwerp: Balthasar Moretus, Plantin Press, 1683. 12mo (152 × 85 mm), pp. 606, [10] (including final leaf with printer's device in red), plus 5 leaves with manuscript additions tipped in after pp. 86, 272, 440 and 588. Engraved device (David and his harp) to title, rubrics, six woodcut initials, two woodcut tailpieces (in red). Contemporary blindtooled calf over wooden boards, sides panelled, early brass fittings (cornerpieces and clasps, one missing upper closure), a boss from the lower cover now lacking., Worn, spine with tear at head, front free endpaper looks, but otherwise sound and still attractive. An interesting Plantin-Moretus psalter, customised by an early owner with the addition of four additional (and otherwise unidentified) Latin prayers in manuscript, each terminating 'Requiescant in pace. Amen', suggesting a specific use for the book in offices for the dead. Each of these leaves was marked with a simple vellum tab to the foredge of a preceding leaf (the tabs now mostly missing). By the later seventeenth century, the Plantin press, under Balthasar Moretus III (1646-Antwerp, 8 July 1696) specialised almost entirely in liturgical books such as breviaries, missals, books of hours, and psalters. (Sabbe, 1929, mentioning this edition, p. 120). The blindtooled binding of this copy is now heavily crackled, but shows evidence of an interesting panelled design with portrait medallions and a central cartouche. Besides the existing brass furniture, the lower cover shows evidence of a former oval central metal boss, now lacking (two small nails survive). STCV (Flanders) … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli 1683 RARE The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli Published by: Chex Henry Wetstein Printed in: 1683 Pages: 229 ----- Features ----- · Rare Early Printing from 1683 · Frontspiece of the Author Condition The book is in good condition. There are no signatures, bookplates or markings of any kind. The book has been bound in three quarter leather binding. The outside boards have some wear and rubbing, as to be expected given the books age. There is some light foxing. This is an early edition, printed in French by Chex Henry Wetstein in 1683. A rare early copy of Machiavelli's classic. Synopsis The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. The descriptions within The Prince have the general theme of accepting that the aims of princes -- such as glory and survival -- can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends. "He who neglects what is done for what ought to be done, sooner effects his ruin than his preservation." ---------- About the Author----- … [Click Below for Full Description]

This edition, the 1st edition of 1683, was reprinted in 1688 in France and at other times in other cities/languages. Historically the book and original map represent a powerful bibliographic document in the history of European exploration in North America. Paris: Chez Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1683, 1674, 1676. Paris:: Chez Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1683, 1674, 1676., 1683. 3 volumes in 1. 12mo. [24], 163, [6]; [24], 239, [1]; [10], 58, [2] pp. The first & third works with printer's woodcut device on vignette, head and tail-pieces, numerous woodcut figures (incl. 4 folding pls.); waterstaining throughout. Original gilt-stamped calf. Very good copy. As a Jesuit priest and a scientist, Pardies, whose works, said to be written with great neatness and elegance*, were popular in their day, "presented a problem to his order. From the time of his appointment at La Rochelle his superiors distrusted him because he was known 'to pursue strange opinions avidly,' and until his death he was continually obliged to compromise his true views on philosophy and science, to the point that they cannot be established with certainty. . . . Although Pardies did not have the time to devote the full measure of his abilities to science, he was undoubtedly one of those vigorous intellects that science always needs, along with great discoverers, especially in an age of transition. That he was just such an intellect is evident from his pedagogical writings and his contacts with the pioneers of physics. . . His notions, as bold as they were naive, purported to demonstrate the spirituality of the soul by virtue of its capacity to understand the infinite through the 'clear and distinct ideas' of certain geometric arguments." - Pierre Costabel, DSB X, pp. 314-315. *John Mason Good, Olinthus Gregory, Newton Bosworth, Pantologia: A New Cyclopaedia, Comprehen … [Click Below for Full Description]

WITS, Herman
Amstelodami: Excudit Gerardus Borstius, 1683. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Hermann Wits was a 17th-century Dutch monastic theologian who studied systematic theology. While most of his works were written to help reconcile Johannes Cocceius's theology with orthodoxy, one of his most important books was 'Aegyptiaca' - a treatise on the religions of ancient Egypt compared to the Jewish traditions. Wits, also called Witsius, studied the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel and discussed their role in Judaica as well as Egyptian theology. Ultimately, Wits sought to argue that Judaism was not derived from Ancient Egyptian pagan rituals. This 1683 first edition printing is extremely rare; in fact, only second and later editions are found for sale elsewhere. [Attributes: First Edition]

RARE MICROGRAPHIC DRAWING AND ACCOMPANYING MANUSCRIPT FOR A DAUPHINE OF FRARARE MICROGRAPHIC DRAWING AND ACCOMPANYING MANUSCRIPT FOR A DAUPHINE OF FRANCE. Micrographic drawing and manuscript on paper, in Italian, France, c. 1683-84. Drawing: one large sheet, dimensions 630 x 500 mm.; Manuscript: dimensions 335 x 225 mm., 221 folios, complete, written in a cursive script entirely in the hand of the author, in one column of 18-21 lines, catchwords, signatures trimmed. BINDING: contemporary binding of red morocco with a tooled double floral frieze gilt, spine decorated and gilt between the bands, edges gilt, attributed to Bernard Bernache (Métivier, 1998), binder to the king from 1684 to 1721. TEXT: A complete book is concealed within this astonishing and very rare micrographic drawing made entirely from microscopic letters. The text when it is copied again in the accompanying manuscript is a lengthy book with 221 folios. This tour de force of calligraphy is a witness to the early impact of the microscope. Made within decades of the publication of Robert Hooke's Micrographia (1665) and the perfection of the microscope by Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1674), this is a work that illuminates the intersection of art and optics at the end of the 17th-century. PROVENANCE: Written at the court of France for Marie Anne Christine of Bavaria (1660-690), wife of Louis de France (1661-1711), who was the only son of King Louis XIV of France and Queen Maria Theresa of Spain. The manuscript was doubtless written in or near Paris in the years 1683-84, at the royal court, where its author Ignacio Mul … [Click Below for Full Description]

MEZERAY, François Eudes de
London: T.N. for Thomas Basset, Samuel Lowndes, and others, 1683. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. François de Mézeray was a 17th-century French historian most known for his 'History of France'. While many such historical works exist, Mézeray's approach is a bit different in that he sought to collect and summarize existing French and Latin chronicles. This impressive work covers the historical period from the early 5th-century Clovis and the legends of Pharamond, to the 14th-century reign of Francis I. Other notable royals including Hugh Capet, Charles III, Clovis, and Pepin the Short. This 1683 London edition was the first English translation of Mezeray's famous chronology. Translated by John Bulteel. [Attributes: First Edition]

Giovanni Battista FALDA (Valduggia, Novara, 1643; Rome, 1678)
Dimensioni varie, in folio oblungo, margini esterni 465x365." A rare early copy of Machiavelli's classic.
