Horae Diurnae Breviarii Romani, Ex Decreto Sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restituti, Pii V. Pont. Max. jussu editi, Clementis VIII & Urbani VIII auctoritate recogniti.

Antverpiae Ex Officina Plantiniana Balthasaris Moreti M DC LXXxIII 1683 - Antiquarian book published in 1683,text in Latin, it is bound in what appears to be a mainly original binding, brown leather boards, showing signs of being well handled over the years and yet looking sound and interesting, neat, stitching can be seen on the front board hinge along the spine, blind stamped decorative box is still fairly obvious on the front board, banded spine with leather cracking, label to top of spine was probably maroon, gilt lettering still readable HORAE DIVENAE, leather flaking at top of spine, rear board leather worn - similar pattern to front just about decypherable, all edge gilt but dulled by wear, book plate tipped in to the reverse side of the front board whcih displays a family Crest under whtch is printed 'This book belongs to the Inner Library, bequeathed by the Will of Tho's. Eyre Esq deceased. Wm Wakeman and Vincent Eyre Esq Acting Executors 1792,.' on a following clear page there is - hand written in tiny writing - a previous owner's annotations, comments in Latin using sepia ink. The text throughout the book is in black with highlighted sections in red, set out in double column format. This book covers daily religious ceremonies in The Roman Catholic Church, Pagination 1-608 with some sections paginated individually, following page 609 Supplementum AD Dirurnale Romanum 1-12, followed by Commvne Sanctorvm, i-cxcvij, Amid all the text there are 5 black and white engravings in a very good clean condition, opposite page 1 which is headed PSALTERVUM; opposite page 319 which is headed PROPRIVM DE TEMPOLA.; opposite page 357 which is headed DOMINICA RESVRECTIONIS;; oppostie page 394 whcih is headed FESTO PENTECOSTES and opposite page 553 which is headed IN ASSVAPTIONE B MARIAE VIRGINS. In addition to the five full page engravings.there are small vignettes providing emphasis to chapters and ends of sections (both in red and black). This book will have been used over the centuries to administer the Roman Catholic faith, the notes in sepia ink and simple strips of paper used as book marks indicate religious committment and dedication from previous owners. One wonders who has used this book and where it has been? It was certainly at one time in the possession of Thomas Eyre of Hassop whose Last Will and Testament caused a little controversy owing to a codicile added shortly before his death, a bequest was awarded despite a challenge in the Courts. As indicated on the Bookplate at the front this volume was bequeathed to the Inner Library by Thomas Eyre. Looking again at the title page the lettering HORAE DIVRNAE is in red. BREVIARII ROMANI is printed in black, the next section Ex decreto Sacrofundti ------------ is in red then the text reverts to black and reads " Inquibus ea omnia continentur, quaepraeter Lectioones & euruum ad plenam Officij Matutini recitationem paertinent." beneath this is vignette of rhe Papal Seal showing crossed keys. The title page is clean and not stained. Size of book 6.75 x 4.25 x 2.00 inches approx. This is an antiquarian treasure from the late seventeenth century a liturgical book written in Latin containing rites of the Catholic church, including prayers, hymns, readings, and notations for daily use. A collectable work for reference or heirloom. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Haec & his; or, the Feminine Gender More Worthy than the Masculine, Being a Vindication of the Ingenious and Innocent Sex from the Biting Sarcasms, Bitter Satyrs, and Opprobrious Calumnies, wherewith they are daily tho undeservedly Aspers'd by the Virulent Tongues and Pens of Malevolent Men

London: Printed by Jo. Harefinch for James Norris, 1683. First edition. 20th century full calf binding with gilt to covers and spine; contrasting morocco lettering pieces on spine. Collates complete minus A1 (blank except for signature mark): [6], 165, [1]. Text block tight; some chipping to margins of title page and one corner neatly restored; some minor marginal loss, occasional creases, and age related toning to interior, but otherwise internally clean. An exceptional copy of this scarce early feminist text. The ESTC locates only 7 known copies, and its most recent appearance at auction was at Sotheby's in 1951. Norris' outspoken contribution to the early modern Querelle des Femmes [the Woman Question], in which writers questioned the humanity of women. Norris' title plays on the Latin feminine and masculine objects (haec and hic, respectively), referencing the infamous Hic Mulier v Haec Vir pamphlet debate of 1620 that accused women (mulier) of endangering social systems with their masculine (hic) behavior. Here, Norris takes up the cause of women and claims "haec" as a term of empowerment, praising women as "the best of Sexes" and drawing on literary, philosophical, and Biblical traditions to undermine contemporary assumptions about women's inferiority. The accomplishments of women in the face of legal and educational limits, Norris argues, proves their superiority over men. "The sad Fate of Females...they are depriv'd of all means to advance themselves...They climb by Intrusion to Honour and Dignity, not by Title or Merit, not by Rule or Divine Command, but by Strength and might." What's more, Norris points out, women's own determination and strength is turned against them by society, with men using the same qualities valued in masculinity as a means for ridiculing women. "When Woman grows bold and daring, we say she's Impudent and too like Man; in our selves we magnifie what we condemn in her. Is not this Injustice?" An important and rare text, referencing key works from Cornelius Agrippa, to Richard Braithwait and John Donne.

Dordrecht, Hendrick and Jacob Keur 1683. "(engraved titlepage) n.p. Contemporary Tortoiseshell binding with 2 silver clasps, 4 silver hinges and gilt-edged text block, 8° (One small piece chipped off the binding, the metal spine is not contemporary. Dutch church book containing the States Translation of the New Testament, the Psalms -with musical notation- of Petrus Dathenus and the Forms. This edition is uncommon, remarkable is that the quires are alternately counted in eights and tens. Attractive binding bound in black with ochre coloured flamed tortoiseshell with silver double clasp and 4 hinges. The clasps have straight catches but both the hasps and joints on the spine have an identically cut out pattern. The use of tortoiseshell as a book binding material became populair in the 17th and 18th century and was mostly used for binding religious texts, small Bibles, prayer books, and gift books for the wealthy middle class. The material came from exotic marine turtles and was valued due to its beauty, shine and rarity. -the name tortoiseshell can therefore be misleading because the material has nothing to do with land tortoises-. Fewer than 4 percent of the luxury bindings made in the Netherlands in the 18th century was covered in materials other than leather and vellum. These bindings were regarded as richer and were more expensive. This is considered even more for tortoise shells since the shells were not imported in large amounts, due to this the material remained expensive and only available for the rich.)(gegraveerde titelpagina) z.p.

Autograph letter fragment.

[Probably Delft, ca 1683?]. - Ca. 184 x 58 mm, mounted on backing paper with note by a later collector (ca. 222 x 138 mm). The beginning of an unpublished letter to an unidentified recipient. It often happens to him, writes van Leeuwenhoek, that he finds himself working on matters the full import of which he does not grasp, and so he would be glad to learn the opinions of Mr. Tevenot (i.e., the French scholar Melchisédech Thévenot, 1620-92): "Myn Heer. Gelijk ik veeltijts verschijde saaken bij de Hant neem omme die haer wesen te ontdecken, daer ik niet kan door komen, soo sal het mij niet onaengenaem sijn, dat de Heer Tevenot mij eenige voorstellen dede waar sijn speculatien mogten komen te vallen, omme alsdan daer op te antwoorden". - In 1683 van Leeuwenhoek wrote to Heinsius: "I have heard Mr. H. van Bleyswyk's high praise of Mons. Thevenot, and I am anxious to hear what that learned and curious gentleman will say about my statements" (Leeuwenhoek, Alle de brieven IV, no. 78). In 1688 he wrote to Thévenot directly: "A few years ago I took the liberty to send you a few of my modest ideas and observations, to which Your Honour replied in courteous terms. Now it so happens that, among several observations, I have discovered the circulation of the blood [.]" (ibid., vol. VIII, no. 111). The present fragment would seem to belong to the context of the former letter. - Identified by a slightly later hand on the leaf itself ("Dit is van Leeuwenhoek"); the backing paper has a note by a German 19th century collector. - The Delft entrepreneur van Leeuwenhoek is one of the most notable representatives of the golden age of Dutch science and technology. A draper by trade and a largely self-taught amateur scientist, he pioneered the field of microscopy and is hailed as the "Father of Microbiology". His instruments, built by a secret and carefully guarded method, achieved magnification of up to 275 times and more - a resolution not reproduced until more than two centuries after his death. "[O]ne can say with truth that [.] protozoology, bacteriology and microbiology begin with Leeuwenhoek" (PMM 166). Autographs by Leeuwenhoek are of the utmost rarity; not a single specimen has been traced in trade records.

Paskaart van de Middelandsche Zee in twee deelen vertoont.

1683 - Amsterdam: Johannes de Ram & Jacobus Robijn, c.1683. Old colour. 515 x 590mm. Minor reinforcing at centre fold. An extremely rare edition of Doncker's chart of the Mediterranean in two sections, first published 1660. It has been updated with more ornate cartouches for title and scale, the latter depicting a ram with a star on its forehead, a pun on the publisher's name which works in English as well as Dutch. Johannes de Ram (1648-93), formerly a timber merchant, set himself up as a map publisher by buying old printing plates. This chart was published in association with Jacobus Robijn (1649-c.1710), although there is no mention of this partnership in Koeman's 'Atlantes Neerlandici'.

First edition. - 1682 1ed History of English Scottish Civil War Robert Bruce Nalson Collection 2v A rare, valuable, and desirable first edition of Nalson and White’s “Impartial Collection of the Great Affairs” – a monumental account of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and the English Civil War. According to Lowndes, “In the historical part, Nalson is as partial in this narrative on the side of the King, as Rushworth is on the side of the Parliament; and they are both to be consulted with great allowance for their party. ‘Nalson is worth turning over, being full of vastly curious and valuable authentic pieces’.” This folio-printed book deals with details of Scotland, including that of the Scottish War for Independence and the right of Robert the Bruce. Nalson discusses the issues involving English Liturgy read in the King’s Chapels and the English Cathedrals and the banished bishops from Queen Mary’s reign. This ‘collection’ is a large body of letters written about the current state of the relationships between England and Scotland during the 1630s and 40s. Corners slightly worn, tiny scrape to lower cover, ink name on front endpaper and reverse of frontispiece, tipped onto reverse of frontispiece is an engraving of Cromwell from another book, frontispiece and plates faintly foxed, tiny rust hole in 1 page with loss of 2 letters, easily legible, light browning to some pages, occasional small light stain, small ink stain to 1 page, all still legible, from page 169 to the end many pages are cropped at the fore-edge, in some places shaving or losing the letter at the end or beginning of the line, almost all is easily legible. Binding tight and firm. A good copy of an anti Cromwell item. Our researches have uncovered nothing about the author who is not to be confused with the poet Thomas May who died in 1650. Most cataloguers give his dates as circa 1645-1718 and refer to him as Sir Thomas May, M. P. The date of the first edition is unknown as no copy is listed in the major libraries nor in ESTC. On the front pastedown is the small "JE" label which indicates that the book was sold in Christie's sale of the library of the Evelyn family and may have belonged to John Evelyn himself. It can be identified by the cropped fore-edges which are described in Christie's Catalogue of the Evelyn sale (Part III, No. 1005). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
