DAMPIER, William.
[10], 315; [1 blank]; [2], "316", [1], 317-616, [4] pp.First French edition of William Dampier's account of his voyage around the world and especially to the south seas in the years 1683 to 1691. Dampier (1651-1715) sailed to Sierra Leone, from there to the Falkland Islands, Cape Horn, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, and further to New Guinea, in the area which was to become known as Dampier Land. He went ashore in Australia, sailed on to Sumatra, the Cape of Good Hope, and back to Europe. Although John Brooke probably shipwrecked on the Australian coast in 1621 without knowing what it was, Dampier was otherwise the first Englishman to set foot in Australia. Dampier had spent several years as a buccaneer, but in the present book he diplomatically made no attempt to exploit the more sensational aspects of his adventures, concentrating on hydrographic, geographic and scientific details. This helped him establish his legitimacy, bringing immediate academic acclaim rather than condemnation as a pirate. With bookplates. The edge of 2 folding plates slightly tattered (not affecting the image) and a few minor marginal stains, but otherwise in very good condition. The bindings with minor stains and worn at the extremities and hinges but still good. First French edition of an account of an important voyage around the world, including the first successful English landing in Australia.l Hill I, pp. 75-78; Howgego D7; Sabin 18381.

[MANUSCRIPT - FRANCE].
[54], [2 blank] pp.Italian manuscript translation of a French pamphlet criticizing contemporary France in the form of a dialogue between Muhammad and the recently deceased French Minister of Finance Jean-Baptiste Colbert. The pamphlet refers to the aftermath of the Battle of Vienna in 1683, in which the Ottoman Empire was defeated by the Holy Roman Empire and its allies. Since France was also at war with the Holy Roman Empire, Muhammad thanks Colbert for his help against their mutual enemy and, to the Frenchman's surprise, proclaims victory for the Christians. Colbert responds that the goal has nevertheless been achieved: inflicting on France a regime comparable to that of the Ottoman Sultans, in which all the French live in a state of slavery. The pamphlet was originally published in French as Entretien dans le royaume des tenebres sur les affaires du temps entre Mahomet et monsieur Colbert with a false imprint (Cologne, Pierre du Marteau) and probably printed in the Netherlands. It was subsequently published in Dutch and Spanish. We have found no record of a printed edition in Italian, but several manuscripts in at least two different Italian translations are known to exist in Italian libraries. The sewing has come loose, but the manuscript is otherwise in very good condition.l Drapeyron, "Un projet Français de conquête de l'empire Ottoman au XVIe et au XVIIe siècles", Revue des deux mondes XVIII (1876), p. 145; cf. Charles Cotton
Joanna Brome, 1683. This poem is a travelogue round the Peak district, visiting places such as the famous cavern and well in Buxton, the rising well in Tideswell and Chatsworth House. This second edition was printed by J Wallis for Joanna Brome in 1683. 86 pages showing signs of its age, understandably. One repair inside front cover, taped, but not too amateurish. It is in its original leather binding with the spine at front cover cracked but not detached. Octavo. The interior pages are worn but in remarkably good condition. Some pages show some edge staining, and there is a pencil annotation on page 55. The book is dedicated to the Duchess of Devonshire. It is a charming book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

He wrote this letter from Newgate prison after his condemnation, and was delivered to his son immediately before his execution. Walcott wished to lead an attack on the royal guards but drew the line at the assassination of the King. The plot leaked in June 1683 when Josiah Keeling gave information to Sir Leoline Jenkins. It was Keeling's testimony that was used at Walcott's trial. Thomas Walcott was the first conspirator to go to trial, as a meeting of the plotters was held at his house. He wrote to Leoline Jenkins offering a confession in return for a pardon. However, Walcott was hanged, drawn and quartered. HICKES, George
London: Sam. Roycroft, for Walter Kettilby, 1683. 1683 1ed Julian the Apostate George Hickes Jovian Answer to Samuel Johnson ROMEIn 1682, English scholar George Hickes gave a sermon entitled 'A Discourse of the Sovereign Power' - a work which asked the question who had ultimate power in a society. It provoked those who claimed to be in power and 'empowered' those who felt they were owed freedom and suffrage. (Ashcraft). This work, however, not only inspired those with and without power, but those that felt the need to respond with literary attacks of their own.English political writer Samuel Johnson wrote a pamphlet, 'Julian the Apostate', the same year criticizing Hickes' 'Discourse'. Curiously, Johnson used that opportunity to attack James, Duke of York as well. Like many political and religious debates of the 17th-century, this battle was fought over numerous published works. The final bout in this line was Hickes's response to Johnson entitled 'Jovian, an Answer to Julian the Apostate'. Hickes clearly stated that the Christians during the Roman Empire appropriately practiced passive obedience.Item number: #11799Price: $550HICKES, George Jovian. The second part is a dictionary of metallurgical terms compiled by Pettus. SEBASTIANI, Pietro de'.
Nuovo metodo, che facilita la lingua Toscana disteso con regole grammaticali, ...Rome, Paolo Moneta, 1683. Small 12mo (14 x 8 cm). Contemporary marbled wrappers. [4], 47, [1 blank] pp. Unrecorded first and only edition of a concise grammar of and guide to the Italian language (in its Tuscan variant, which had already spread to Rome by this date), dedicated to Massimiliano di Bethune, Prince of Henrichemont. Pietro de' Sebastiani, professor of the Tuscan language in Rome, follows his dedication with a brief account of the origins of the language, followed by an introduction to the pronunciation and grammar. Little is known about the author. Moneta published his first three works in a single edition in 1677, similar to the present book in dimensions and layout: a brief introduction to the Tuscan language for foreigners ("per commodità delle nationi oltramontane"), followed by two tourist guides: to the churches in Rome and their artwork, and to Rome's principal gardens, palaces, libraries, museums and galleries. Sebastiani went on to publish at least eight more small books in the years 1679 to 1686, mostly about the history and antiquities of Rome. He returned to his professional field, the Tuscan language, only in the present book. Its structure and content differ considerably from his 1677 Nuovo metodo per acquistare brievemente la lingua Toscana Romana. Dennis Rhodes first drew attention to the 1677 publication in 1983 and Aprea called its introduction to the Tuscan language "a source of considerable interest for the study of pre-unification Roman regional Italian". With a large woodcut decorated initial (a 53 mm gothic O), the text set in 2 columns with a band of cast fleurons across the head, another between the columns and a rule at the foot. First edition of an extremely rare and possibly unique broadside (the only edition in the original German) printed and published near the end of the 1683 Ottoman siege of Vienna, apparently written by (and certainly based on fresh reports by) an eye-witness, published at the most desperate moment of the siege, less than two weeks before Imperial and Polish reinforcements arrived to rescue the city. The report gives background information beginning with the 1664 peace treaty and unsuccessful attempts to renew it in 1682. But it centres on the events unfolding at the time of publication. In addition to details about the progression of the troops, it gives information about the fortifications, about artillery used by both sides and it accuses the Ottomans of barbarous deeds and espionage. It discusses the roles of the Turks, Tatars, Transylvanians, Wallacians and Moldavians. It also reflects recent technological advances, such as the use of a telescope and the Ottoman use of powerful explosive mines to breach the heavily fortified city wall … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zinnebeelden, getrokken uit Horatius Flaccus, naer de geestrijke vinding van den geleerden Otto van Veen, op de zeden toegepast; en met bygedichten, op nieuws gerijmt.Amsterdam, Justus Dankerts, 1683. 4to. With engraved portrait of Horace on title-page, and 103 engraved emblems by A. Loeimans and A. Seil after Otto Vaenius. Contemporary vellum. [8], 205, [2], [1 blank] pp. First edition of an emblem book by the Dutch poet Anthony Jansen (ca. 1621-1696). The work is based on Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata, an emblem book illustrating the Horace's poems. The emblems of the present edition were newly engraved at Amsterdam, most of them in reverse after Vaenius's engravings, with a few signed by A. Loeimans and A. Seil: little-known artists who probably worked in direct service of the Amsterdam publisher. The emblems, however, are as beautifully done as those by Vaenius himself, achieving a fine play with light and darkness by the use of various engraving techniques. All emblems have a motto in Latin engraved below on the copper-plate and a French letterpress quatrain below, with on the facing page an extensive Latin quotations from Horace and poems in Dutch and French written by Anthony Jansen, each with their own caption.Browned and slightly foxed throughout, with a few small stains. Binding slightly stained. Overall a very good copy. Landwehr, Emblem and fable books 383; Praz, p. 523; De Vries, Emblemata 38.

The Prince Niccolo Machiavelli 1683 RARE The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli Published by: Chex Henry Wetstein Printed in: 1683 Pages: 229 ----- Features ----- · Rare Early Printing from 1683 · Frontspiece of the Author Condition The book is in good condition. There are no signatures, bookplates or markings of any kind. The book has been bound in three quarter leather binding. The outside boards have some wear and rubbing, as to be expected given the books age. There is some light foxing. This is an early edition, printed in French by Chex Henry Wetstein in 1683. A rare early copy of Machiavelli's classic. Synopsis The Prince is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. The Prince is sometimes claimed to be one of the first works of modern philosophy, especially modern political philosophy, in which the effective truth is taken to be more important than any abstract ideal. It was also in direct conflict with the dominant Catholic and scholastic doctrines of the time concerning how to consider politics and ethics. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and the one most responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. The descriptions within The Prince have the general theme of accepting that the aims of princes -- such as glory and survival -- can justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends. "He who neglects what is done for what ought to be done, sooner effects his ruin than his preservation." ---------- About the Author----- … [Click Below for Full Description]
