Rocha, Diego Andres
1681. Lima. Manuel de los Olivos, Joseph de Contreras. 4to. 6 ff., 84 ff., 12 ff., 15 ff. Nineteenth century quarter red calf over marbled boards, raised bands to spine, compartments tooled and lettered in gilt, a little rubbed. Small restoration to title away from text, some pages with marginal notes by an early or possibly contemporary learned reader, scattered inconsequential foxing, worm tracks at gutter occasionally touching a few words, else fine.- First edition, Rocha’sTratadois a remarkably rare book on the origin of American Indians, and a rare example of South American printing. In fact, is one of the few books printed in Lima referring to the anthropology of Native Americans; this is exceptionally rare copy with the never-present appendix: “Adiciones a los capitulos del origen de los Indios”, which is not mentioned by either Medina or Palau, and which virtually no institutional copy preserves. The work is dedicated to the origin of American natives, and speculates on their Hebrew or Iberian ancestry, with differences between Mexican and Peruvian Indians. According to the evidence he gathered, Mexicans likely descended from Israelite lost Tribes and Peruvians from Iberians who crossed the Atlantic in the times of the grandson of Noah, Tubal. Furthermore, his work is relevant for providing an account of other theories regarding the origin of the Indians, such as Garcia’s. Their connection with the lost tribes of Israel is explored on leaves 67-69: “What proves that the Indians of America are the seed of the Sons of Israel . . . is that … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRANKLAND, Thomas
London: Tho. Braddyll, for Robert Clavel, 1681. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. A rare first edition of Thomas Frankland's 'Annals of King James and King Charles'. According to Neufeld, this work is "a collection of previously printed documents, arranged by Frankland to prove that puritan-Presbyterians were inveterate enemies of the Elizabethan framework of the Church, the Restoration religious settlement, and the established constitution. 'Annals' reiterated Peter Heylyn's contention that the wars in Scotland and England could be traced to the adherents of Calvin's reformation." Frankland's 'Annals' was to blame for much of the animosity aimed at the English Parliament for the Civil Wars even though, it was "an exercise in preventative historical parallelism aimed at vindicating the Restoration settlement." 'Satiriques D'Aloisia' is considered to be the first pornographic work written in Latin. It forms a collection of dialogues with Tullia, an Italian woman in her twenties, who is charged with teaching her young cousin Ottavia about sex and sexuality by Ottavia's mother. To do so she seduces Ottavia and teaches her in a practical nature. In this writing Chorier defends tribadism, and explores female sexuality. This work has been published under many different titles, in several languages. The English title is the 'Dialogues of Luisa Siegea' or 'The School of Women, or the Seven Flirtatious Encounters of Aloisia'. Upon its initial publication, the work was circulated through the libertine community, under various imprints. Several early copies of this work have false imprints, claiming that they were published in England or other European locations when it was more likely to be published in Paris, (ESTC). COWLEY, Abraham
London: J.M. for Henry Herringman, 1681. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "What shall I do to be for ever known, And make the Age to come own?" I shall like beasts or common people die, Unless you write my elegy." - Abraham Cowley, The Motto Abraham Cowley was one of the leading English poets during the 17th-century. This charming, and rare, sixth edition was the last edition of the original one volume printing. Following this edition, the works were printed in multiple volumes. Famous poems, such as 'The Motto,' 'The Mistress,' 'Ode to Pindar,' and 'Davideis' are all included in this collection. The Pindaric Ode is especially interesting in that Cowley attempted to reproduce Pindar's works, but in doing so, he misinterpreted the metrical patterns, and, in doing so, did not accurately reflect Pindar's poetry. He did, however, create one of the most famous odes ever written, which would become the influence for William Wordsworth's famous ode "Intimations of Immortality.".

(MARITIME LAW).
Paris: Denys Thierry and Christophle Ballard, 1681. 4to (240 × 190 mm), pp. [viii], 273, [1] blank, [54] including privilege leaf at end. Woodcut royal device to title, numerous wooodcut and typographical ornaments to text. Old inkstain to lower edge towards the spine, running about 4 mm into lower margins of most leaves towards the gutter. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine with five raised bands, gilt. Minor neat old repairs to corners and joints. A very good copy. FIRST EDITION of Colbert's famous codification for Louis XIV, the basis of modern maritime law in all parts of the world. The Ordonnance occupies an important place in the history of insurance, both in the field of marine insurance (which is fully described) and life insurance, since it allows (probably for the first time in print) that in limited circumstances lives may be insured as opposed to just goods. This arose from the need for ship owners to insure cargos of slaves or against the possibility of the capture and ransome of passengers and crew. While the Ordonnance expressly excludes the possibility of insuring lives in general, an exception is made in the case of slaves (since they were legally 'goods' rather than lives) whose value could be insured. Since ransomed individuals could acquire a monetary 'price', French slavers were thus able to create a legal fiction where the price originally paid for a slave could be expressed as a ransom and thus become an insurable figure (provided the slave die in other than 'natural' circumstances). The codification of procedure in these cases thus began a culture i … [Click Below for Full Description]

According to Neufeld, this work is a collection of previously printed documents, arranged by Frankland to prove that puritan-Presbyterians were inveterate enemies of the Elizabethan framework of the Church, the Restoration religious settlement, and the established constitution. Annals reiterated Peter Heylyn s contention that the wars in Scotland and England could be traced to the adherents of Calvin s reformation. Frankland s Annals was to blame for much of the animosity aimed at the English Parliament for the Civil Wars even though, it was an exercise in preventative historical parallelism aimed at vindicating the Restoration settlement. (Neufeld, 103ff). Item number: #7723 Price: $950 FRANKLAND, Thomas The annals of King James and King Charles the First.: containing a faithful history and impartial account of the great affairs of state, and transactions of parliaments in England from the tenth of King James MDCXII to the eighteenth of King Charles MDCXLII: wherein several material passages relating to the late civil wars (omitted in former histories) are made known. Rocha, Diego Andres
1681. The origin of American Indians; exceptionally rare copy, including the Adiciones, almost never present. 1681. Lima. Manuel de los Olivos, Joseph de Contreras. 4to. 6 ff., 84 ff., 12 ff., 15 ff. Nineteenth century quarter red calf over marbled boards, raised bands to spine, compartments tooled and lettered in gilt, a little rubbed. Small restoration to title away from text, some pages with marginal notes by an early or possibly contemporary learned reader, scattered inconsequential foxing, worm tracks at gutter occasionally touching a few words, else fine. 20,000 $ First edition, Rocha’s Tratado is a remarkably rare book on the origin of American Indians, and a rare example of South American printing. Their connection with the lost tribes of Israel is explored on leaves 67-69: … [Click Below for Full Description]

The one printed in red and black is dated 1682, followed by a title page dated 1681. The red-and-black title page identifies the authors, as “T.D. and B.K. The first work is divided into three book. The second work also has a red-and-black title page listing B. K. as author. The 48-page section is entitled “Philologia Sacra. The Second Part” and is presented as an adjunct to Book I. It discusses tropes of all sorts, using Biblical examples. COWLEY, Abraham
London: J.M. for Henry Herringman, 1681. 1681 Abraham Cowley English Poetry Mistress Motto Pindar Ode Davideis Sylva "What shall I do to be for ever known,And make the Age to come own?"I shall like beasts or common people die, Unless you write my elegy." - Abraham Cowley, The MottoAbraham Cowley was one of the leading English poets during the 17th-century. He did, however, create one of the most famous odes ever written, which would become the influence for William Wordsworth's famous ode "Intimations of Immortality."Item number: #7599Price: $599COWLEY, AbrahamThe works of Mr. Abraham Cowley: consisting of those which were formerly printed and those which be design'd for the press, now published out of the authors original copies.London: Printed by J.M. for Henry Herringman..., 1681. 'Satiriques D'Aloisia' is considered to be the first pornographic work written in Latin. London: for William Crooke, Thomas Hobbes's A Briefe of the Art of Rhetorique, ?an abridgement containing the most useful part of Aristotle?s Rhetoric?, was published anonymously in 1637 (STC 767 under Aristotle; a rare book), and was reprinted (as by ?a concealed Author?) following a translation of Pierre Ramée's Dialacticae libri duo and preceding an adaptation of a translation by Dudley Fenner of Talon's Rhetorica in A Compendium of the Art of Logick and Rhetoric, published in 1651. ?Mr. Hobbes chose to recommend by his Translation the Rhetoric of Aristotle, as being the most accomplish'd work on that Subject, which the World has yet seen, having been admir'd in all Ages, and in particular highly approv'd by the Father of the Roman Eloquence, a very competent Judge. To this he thought fit to add some small matter relating to that part which concern's Tropes and Figures; as also a short discovery of some little trick of false and deceitful Reasoning.? (Preface). 1681. [Click Below for Full Description]
