HOWARD, Robert
London: for M.L. and L.C. and sold by Langly Curtis, 1681. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Richard II of England was a 14th-century King of England who withstood major difficulties such the Hundred Years' War and the infamous Peasant's Revolt. His reputation has lived famously, much in part to William Shakespeare whose play 'Richard II' is one of the best literary works on the King's life and reign. Author information from Wing, attributed to Howard, a 17th-century playwright who defended the royal crown during the English Civil War. He was worried; however, that his stance would contribute negatively to his work, so he published 'Life and Reign' anonymously as 'a person of quality'. [Attributes: First Edition]

printed at the Theatre for Moses Pitt, 1681. First edition, folio, 3 p.l., 136, 185-294, 361-439, [1], 449-488, 553-650, [4], 737-959, [14]; engraved frontispiece portrait, engraved vignette title-page, woodcut headpieces and decorated initials; extensive contemporary reader's notes in ink and in a neat hand on both pastedowns, preliminary and terminal flyleaves, and the six pages of the index, with only sporadic annotation in the text itself; title page with tear in the gutter at the top with minor loss to the printed rule; a clean and intriguing copy in contemporary full calf, gilt-decorated spine laid down, new morocco label, joints restored; very good and sound. The annotations are extensive but anonymous. They generally reference items of interest in the text, with page references. Covers the period 1639-1659, as indicated by the year printed under the page numbers. The book was first published anonymously, as here; it was later reissued the same year under the name of Sir William Dugdale. The final 3 leaves contain a "Catalogue of books printed at the Theater in Oxford." Wing D-2492. [Attributes: First Edition]

The greatest Irishman abroad of the ninth century, famous as linguist, philosopher and Greek scholar. Around 845 he was head of the Palace School at the court of Charles the Bald in France. His translation of the Pseudo-Dionysius from the Greek astonished the Papal librarian. While all around him, his contemporaries were content to try to understand their faith and to grasp the rudiments of knowledge, John ventured on new paths. Where his fellows hardly looked beyond the elementary questions of theology, contained in the writings of the Fathers, and kept within the bounds of the 'trivium', John constructed an entire system largely under the influence of Greek thought. PANVINIO, Onofrio.
Padua: Typis Peiri Marie Frambotti bibliop., 1681. Padua: Typis Peiri Marie Frambotti bibliop.,, 1681. Folio (359 x 241 mm). 18th-century vellum, manuscript lettering to spine, covers ruled in blind with large blindstamped centrepiece, edges speckled red. With engraved title page and 31 other plates, one of which is folding (as most common; a census of institutional copies indicates that plate counts vary from 28 to 34 plates). Neat early notation to front and rear free endpaper. Vellum cockled, bowed, and stained, rear turn-in lifting and grazing the book block; contents stained throughout first half of book, folding plate slightly proud, chip at head of pp. 29/30 not affecting text, short tear at head of plate facing p. 111 very slightly affecting imprint, tiny hole to engraved title. A good copy. Fifth edition of this well-illustrated study of Roman circuses, games, and triumphs, by the Italian antiquary and Vatican librarian Onofrio Panvinio (1530-1568). The work is "made up of material which was largely unpublished at the time of the author's death. The two books of De ludis circensibus were intended to form part of the larger study of Roman antiquities, and concern the games and other activities (notably religious rites, sacrifices and processions) which took place in the circuses and other arenas of the Roman Empire. The second work, De triumpho commentarius, is much shorter and deals with Roman triumphs... The plates are chiefly of two sorts: some present historical evidence in the form of coins, views of ruins and details of reliefs, while others show Panvinio's r … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Printed by T.J. for Robert Boulter, 1681. London: Printed by T.J. for Robert Boulter,, 1681. Defence of the East India Company Quarto (192 x 138 mm). Recent grey paper boards. Some contemporary annotation and underling. Browned throughout with some small stains, each leaf mounted on stub, peripheral paper repairs, brittle at peripheries with some chipping, slight running burn mark to final few pages affecting text, closely cropped at head with some loss to pagination and to the text of pp. 40-1. A well-preserved copy of a fragile pamphlet. First edition of this defence of the East India Company, one of two issues, the other one printed by J. R. for the Honourable the East India Company. Josiah Child, Chairman and virtual ruler of the East-India company for many years, aimed to aggrandise the company by extending its political power, and to restrict any competition. In the present essay "he enumerates many enlightened principles, as that 'silver or gold, coined or uncoined, though they are used as a measure of all other things, are no less a commodity than oil, wine, or tobacco, cloth or stuff, and may in many cases be exported as much to national advantage as any other commodity. That no nation ever was or will be considerable in trade that prohibits the export of bullion'" (Palgrave). ESTC R19413; Goldsmiths', 2415; Kress 1529.

HOWARD, Robert
for M.L. and L.C. and sold by Langly Curtis. 1681 1ed Richard II of England Life & Reign Hundred Years War Medieval Howard Richard II of England was a 14th-century King of England who withstood major difficulties such the Hundred Years’ War and the infamous Peasant’s Revolt. His reputation has lived famously, much in part to William Shakespeare whose play ‘Richard II’ is one of the best literary works on the King’s life and reign. Author information from Wing, attributed to Howard, a 17th-century playwright who defended the royal crown during the English Civil War. He was worried; however, that his stance would contribute negatively to his work, so he published ‘Life and Reign’ anonymously as ‘a person of quality’. Le sue opere furono particolarmente ricercate per le numerose curiosità in esso contenute. Nicolai, nato nella contea Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, studiò in vari istituti universitari lingue e antichità fra i quali Jena, Helmstiidt, Lipsia, Marburg e Giessen. [Click Below for Full Description]
