XXII, 341; [1], VIII, 383 pp.Manuscript map of the middle third of the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), made before any detailed map of this area had been published. Bound in a book containing the first edition of Fellowes's history of Sri Lanka, published together with a new edition of Robert Knox's own account of his stay in Sri Lanka (first edition 1681). The manuscript map provides great detail for inland Sri Lanka, ranging from Puttalam above left to Kalutara below left and from Batticaloa above right to Kataragama below right. This area spans several provinces, including the ancient Kingom of Kandy, showing many roads, towns and villages in great detail, especially around the city of Kandy. The map is contemporary with the book, dating between 1813 and 1817, the period leading up to the last armed conflict between the British colonial government and the Kingdom of Kandy, which resulted in the final defeat of Kandy and the British control of the entire island of Sri Lanka. The first part of the book has several manuscript annotations in the same hand as the manuscript map. These annotations primarily concern the bureaucracy and administration of the Kingdom of Kandy. Several corrections are written in the margins of chapter LVI (Offices, casts and miscellaneous particulars) and the list of Singhalese sovereigns on the last page of the first work is expanded in manuscript up to the year 1815, ending with: "The English government established 2 March 1815 - Esto perpetua (may it always be so)".In 1821 John Davy published his new map of Sri Lanka, which for the first time … [Click Below for Full Description]

Visscher II-- Nicolaes
"Moscoviae seu Russiae Magnae Generalis Tabula qu? Lapponia, Norvegia Suecia, Dania, Polonia, Maximaeque partes Germaniae, Tartariae, Turcici Imperii, aliaeque Regiones adjacentes simul ostenduntur; de novo correcta et edita". Prijs: Euro1. … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAFITEAU, Joseph-François.
[6], 36, [18], 300; [4], 301-555 [= 560] pp.First edition of the Dutch translation of an important work on North American Indians. The author, Joseph François Lafitau (1681-1746), was the son of a rich merchant and travelled as a missionary to Canada in 1711, where he tried to convert the Iroquois Indians to Christianity. He made "a thorough study of Iroquois character and usages, as a preparation for his great work Moers des sauvages ..." (Howgego). It deals extensively with the religion of the Iroquois, referring to other "primal" religions in Brazil and the Antilles, but also to ancient Greek and Roman rites. Other chapters deal with the Iroquois government, marriage, warfare, trade, hunting, burial, etc., all illustrated in great detail. Lafiteau also discovered ginseng in Canada, and wrote a treatise on its medicinal properties. With bookplate and some marginal annotations in pencil. Binding rubbed along the extremities, corners bumped and top of front hinge slightly cracked. Text leaves and plates in very good condition, with only a few faint spots or stains.l Alden & Landis 731/128; Sabin 38598; Tiele, Bibl. 637; cf. Howgego, to 1800, L51.

SCHLATTER, Michael.
XXII, 56 pp.Very rare first edition of the report of a mission to aid and bring order to the German Reformed congregations in Pennsylvania and neighbouring areas, prepared by Michael Schlatter at the request of the Holland Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church. King Charles II granted the Pennsylvania territory to the English Quaker William Penn in 1681 and German-speaking Quakers from the Palatine settled there already around 1685. Penn's strong advocacy of religious freedom encouraged numerous Germans of various faiths to follow, often collectively called "Pennsylvania Dutch" (a corruption of "Deutsch"): Mennonites and several related groups, Lutherans and especially German Reformed, not only in Pennsylvania but also in neighbouring parts of New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. The Dutch Reformed Church still had a strong presence in America (New York had been the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam from 1624 to 1674) and developed close ties with the German Reformed groups (including the Moravian brethren) which therefore fell under the Amsterdam classis. While many Quaker congregations had no designated preachers as a matter of principal, many Reformed congregations simply had no ordained preacher available, and the Dutch synod was particularly concerned about these "shepherdless congregations". Schlatter's report, including excerpts from his diaries, gives a detailed account of the state of the German Reformed congregations in America a quarter century before the United States declared its independence, often reporting the numbers of houses and residents and giving his own eye-wi … [Click Below for Full Description]

STRUYS, Jan Janszoon,
Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs, 1681. Amsterdam: Jacob van Meurs,, 1681 . 2 parts in one, quarto (238 x 187 mm) Contemporary vellum, manuscript title to spine. First title printed in red and black, 2 additional engraved titles, and 19 folding plates, engraved illustrations. From the library of British Arabist and colonial agent Col. S. B. Miles (1838-1914), with printed bookplate noting his widow's bequest of the collection to Bath Public Library in 1920 and manuscript shelf-mark and blind-stamps as usual. Somewhat rubbed and little stained, inner hinges restored, some marginal dust soiling, plates toned, two a little frayed along fore-margins, one with old repairs verso, about very good. First edition in French, first published in Amsterdam in 1676, before becoming a Europe-wide best-seller. Purporting to be an account of the travels of a Dutch sail-maker and seaman, the truth of these adventures has been challenged in the past. However, it is now widely accepted that although "replete with plagiarised text and improbable events … the ghost-written text … is nevertheless a useful source" (review of Boterbloem, The Fiction and Reality of Jan Struys in English Historical Review, CXXV, 2010). Overwhelming evidence suggests that the text was compiled by Olfert Dapper, whose methods are well known from his other publications. Although Struys himself was almost certainly illiterate, and despite the presence of material drawn from other sources, his central importance to the project is suggested by the fact that publication was delayed until Struys returned to Amsterdam from Muscovy … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carniolan legal manuscript]. Schönleben, Johann Ludwig, historiographer and theologian (1618-1681) (ed.).
Probably Laibach, likely 1620s, with additions to, 1681. Small folio (205 x 300 mm). German and Latin manuscript on paper. (2), 188 (but: 186, omitting 88); (15); (4), 25; (32); (9 blanks); 4 ff. (ca. 530 written pages). With a contemporary sanguine portrait of Emperor Leopold I on the front pastedown and a receipe for aloe pills, dated 1679, written on the lower. 17th century vellum. A collection of mainly German (and a few Latin) legal texts, assembled thus in the 1670s by the Carniolan protonotary apostolic and sometime Jesuit J. L. Schönleben. His title page (as quoted above) is followed by a single, frayed leaf of contents covering folios 1-62, so that at least two further leaves of contents may be assumed to be lacking at the beginning. This is followed by the first and earliest part of the collection, foliated to leaf 188 and written in an earlier 17th century hand, containing the common law of the Duchy of Carniola. Because this section incorporates large parts of the so-called Private-Law Treatises of Bernhard Walther (the "father of Austrian law" who in the mid-16th century collected the Lower Austrian customary law), the present manuscript served as an important source for Max Rintelen's 1937 edition of the Treatises (cf. references below). As a form of oath on f. 5r refers to Emperor Ferdinand II, this section can be dated to no earlier than 1620; occasional textual amendments in Schönleben's later hand suggest that it was closely studied by the scholar. - The remainder of the collection is written in a different single, later scribal hand, likely by an assistan … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MANUSCRIPT]. WILLIAM III, Prince of Orange.
[Decree granting a salary to Johan Theodor, Baron of Friesheim, as chief bailiff and state prosecutor in 's-Hertogenbosch].The Hague, 2 April 1681. Folio (31.5 x 20.5 cm). Written in brown ink on paper, with the armorial seal of William of Orange stamped on a decorative paper cut-out over red wax. [1], [3 blank] pp. Decree signed by William of Orange, Stadholder of The Netherlands and future King William III of England, tranferring to Johan Diederik (or Theodo(o)r), 2nd Baron of Friesheim, recently appointed chief bailiff and state prosecutor in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, all sources of income that had been previously bestowed on his predecessor, Johan Ruse, in total 330 guilders per year plus further unspecified emoluments. The document notes that Friesheim had been appointed to succeed Ruse on 5 October 1679. It is signed by William of Orange ("Guillaume de Orange") and Johan Pesters, a leading figure in William's entourage. Johan Ruse may have been the former Burgomaster of Maasstricht of that name, also known as Johannes Rusius, who was still living in 1668.In his teens or early twenties Johan Diederik had served as William of Orange's page and became a captain in the Dutch army in 1666. He was to serve many years under William of Orange, rising to the rank of Major General in 1701 and General in 1718. He gradually shifted into civilian life beginning in 1709 and ended his career as Governor of 's-Hertogenbosch, where he died in 1733. RODRIGUEZ DE SAA Y MENEZES, Juan.
Rebelion de Ceylan, y los progressos de su conquista en el gobierno de Constantino de Saa, y Noroña.Lisbon, Antonio Craesbeeck de Mello, 1681. Small 4to (19.5 x 14 cm). 18th-century limp sheep parchment. [20], 243, [1 blank] pp. Very rare first and only edition of a first-hand account of the rebellion of the Sinhalese natives, supported by the Dutch, against the Portuguese government of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), concentrating on the years 1623 to 1630, when the author's father was governor of the island. The main text in Spanish, comprising a prologue and sixteen chapters, begins with a general description of the island, its emperors before the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505, the customs of the natives, and the Portuguese government. These are followed by an account of the author's father, Constantino de Saa y Noroña (1586-1630), his taking office as governor and captain general, his principles of government and his reforms, his victories and conquests, and his achievements generally. Finally comes the rebellion itself, led by the King of Kandy, and its immediate aftermath, including the death of De Saa. Although the Dutch came to Ceylon in 1602 and encouraged disgruntled natives to fight against the Portuguese twenty years before De Saa took office, it was largely after his defeat and death in 1630 that the Dutch gained the upper hand in the struggle for control of Ceylon. It was only in 1658, however, that they succeeded in ousting the Portuguese and bringing the island under Dutch control. With the front board partially detached from the bookblock, otherwise in very good con … [Click Below for Full Description]

INQUISITION. Beaulieu, Luke (1644 or 1645-1723)
London:, 1681. FIRST EDITION.. Octavo:. A fine copy in contemporary English speckled calfskin, spine with attractive gilt ornaments and red label tooled in gold. Contents very fresh with just the occasional light blemish and a light ink line on the engraved title. The engraved title shows the pope and his cardinals, and scenes of Protestants being tortured and martyred by agents of the Inquisition. A native of France, the Huguenot Luke Beaulieu was forced to flee to England to avoid religious persecution. While in exile, he was naturalized English and became a well-regarded cleric and anti-Catholic polemicist. In his book on the Inquisition, Beaulieu begins with a number of chapters on Catholic rites, including the performance of exorcisms: “They assault the Devil with Holy Water, Incense, Sulphur, Rue, little Papers containing holy words, Relicks of Saints, and notable Railing…. All of it is a heap of things very absurd.” Exorcism permeates a great deal of Catholic ritual, for instance, in the rite of baptism: “Even the child is Exorcised with the Priests blowing three times in his face, and anointing it with spittle.” The worship of images and saints is also denounced. Taking up his main subject, Beaulieu gives an account of the origins of the Inquisition, with a chapter on the establishment of the Inquisition in Spain, and a transcript of the 1587 Bull of Sixtus V that affirmed the Inquisition’s authority “to enquire, proceed, define, and give sentence not only in all causes about manifest Heresie, Apostacie, Schisms, Divinations, abuse of Sacraments” a … [Click Below for Full Description]
