WILLIS, Thomas
Lugduni: Joannis Antonii Huguetan, & Soc., 1681. 1681 Thomas Willis NEUROLOGY Cerebri Anatome Brain Anatomy Nerves Surgery 2vThomas Willis's 'Cerebri Anatome' was a landmark work in the history of health science and anatomy. Prior to Willis, there was only one presentation of cerebral anatomy, by Casserius. However, Willis's was much more exhaustive and discusses his method for removal and dissection of the brain for research purposes. He gives extensive descriptions of the brain stem, cerebellu, and basal ganglia. Willis also provided detailed schemas of the vegal and sympathetic nerves to the viscera and discussed the uses of the parts of the brain along with circulation functions. Many of Willis's anatomical and cerebral hypotheses are outlined in this work. For instance, Willis hypothesized that the convolutional complexity of the cerebral cortex is associated directly with human intelligence. This book was known to be a part of the personal libraries of Thomas Browne, a renowned scholar of medicine, religion and esoteric sciences. This book includes other research and works by other physicians including Radulphum Bathurst, William Croone, and Nathaniel Highmore. It also features more than 30 engravings depicting cerebral anatomy, nerves, and brain activity.Item number: #9691Price: $1950WILLIS, ThomasClarissimi viri Thomæ Willis, medicinæ doctoris, naturalis philosophiæ professoris Oxoniensis, necnon inclyti medicorum collegii Londinensis & Societatis Regiæ socii; Opera omnia: Tomus prior [-posterior]. Carolopoli [i.e London]: eleutherium Anglicum William Crooke, 1681. 1681 1ed Life of Thomas Hobbes Leviathan Philosophy Bathurst Blackburne Cowley "The condition of man . . . is a condition of war of everyone against everyone." - Thomas HobbesThomas Hobbes was perhaps the most notable 17th-century English philosopher who conducted social studies and published historical theories on politics, physics, and law. While works such as 'Leviathan' and 'De Cive' were his most popular books, works such as 'De Homine' and 'De Corpore' proved to be highly important. This book is a collection of three separate works published as one, each of which is a 'life of the author' describing the life and work of Hobbes. The first is thought to be by Ralph Bathurst, the second by Richard Blackburne, and the third by Hobbes himself. HEIDE, Anton(ius) de and Robertus ALTIUS.
Three signed autograph letters mostly discussing medical matters, the first written on 2 October 1681 beginning with comments about Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) and his recent discovery of blood cells. All three letters were written to the physician Theodorus Janssonius van Almeloveen (1657-1712), the first two from the physician and medical researcher Anton de Heide and the third from the Dutch Reformed preacher Robertus Altius (ca. 1650?-1699). De Heide and Van Almeloveen were leading physicians of their day and De Heide published works that included information about blood and blood circulation in the years 1682 to 1686. After the comments about Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, De Heide goes on to discuss other medical matters, referring to the Dutch-born court physician at Berlin Cornelis Bontekoe (ca. 1645?-1685) and the London scientist and founder of modern chemistry Robert Boyle (1627-1691).The second letter begins with references to the surveying of a river on Walcheren, then still an island, where De Heide lived in the city of Middelburg. It goes on to discuss medical matters, including the spread of an animal epidemic from Germany to the Netherlands. He also refers to the classical Greek physician Rufus Ephesius (active ca. 100 AD).Altius's rather chatty letter refers to Cleopatra's banquet and to Hercules.De Heide's 1681 letter discussing Van Leeuwenhoek is in very good condition and his other letter (of 1681/87) is also very good except that it has a small stain affecting but not obscuring a few words and is somewhat dirty. The 1697 letter is browned and has some … [Click Below for Full Description]

"Moscoviae seu Russiae Magnae Generalis Tabula quâ Lapponia, Norvegia Suecia, Dania, Polonia, Maximaeque partes Germaniae, Tartariae, Turcici Imperii, aliaeque Regiones adjacentes simul ostenduntur; de novo correcta et edita". Pri … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
