      - Title within elaborate calligraphic woodcut border (title a little soiled & frayed around edges). 242 leaves (the last a blank). Small folio, cont. blind-stamped panelled pigskin over wooden boards (binding somewhat soiled, pigskin at one corner worn away), remains of clasps & catches. Hamburg: A. Lichtenstein, 1682. First edition, extremely rare, of this large and comprehensive Hamburg manual of accounting techniques. Only two other copies seem to be extant: one at the British Library and the other Tübingen. The book was a success and a second edition was published in 1714 under the title Der Werth-geschätzte Handels-Mann. Joachim Rademann was a chartered accountant at Hamburg. At the end of this, his first published work, he describes himself a "young man" and, according to Schröder, he married in 1683; otherwise, nothing seems to be known of his life. Based on Christoph Achatius Hager's treatise Buchhalten uber proper Commission und Compagnia Handlungen, first published at Hamburg ca. 1625, Rademann's book takes into consideration the changes and innovations that trading and coinage had seen since then, and focuses on practical matters. The general ledger section comprises a Memorial, a Journal, and a Hauptbuch; the associated accounts include a Cassa-Buch (cash journal), a Banca-Buch (bank account), an Unkostenbuch (book of charges), a Monat-Buch (monthly journal), and a Factura-Buch and Rechnungs-Copey-Buch (books of invoices). Precise examples taken from actual trading accounts at Hamburg are given throughout. "Rademann dispenses with long theoretical preambles and instead, when differentiating between debtor and creditor, points to the works of Hager and Gebhardt Overheiden. To the associated accounts, Rademann adds the Portbuch von Briefe, today's petty cash book. In the Memorial, Rademann follows his predecessor Hager, but adds a wealth of detail. The same applies to the Journal? The impersonal accounts that follow are remarkable not only for their multitude, but also for the exceptionally delicate and skillful handling of the accounts. Rademann's work is nothing short of excellent."-Penndorf, Geschichte der Buchhaltung in Deutschland, p. 219 (in trans.). Very good copy of this extremely rare book.         English Liberties

1682 - (CARE, Henry). English Liberties: Or, The Free-Born Subject's Inheritance. Containing I. Magna Charta, The Petition of Right, the Habeas Corpus Act". II. The Proceedings in Appeals of Murther; The Work and Power of Parliaments". As also the Oath and Duty of Grant and Petty Juries. III. All the Laws against Conventicles and Protestant Differeters". And an Abstract of all the Laws against Papists. London: Printed by G. Larkin, for Benjamin Harris, [1682]. Small octavo (3-1/2 by 6 inches), contemporary full polished brown sheep rebacked with original spine laid down, later red morocco spine label. $16,000.Rare first edition, containing printings of the Magna Charta and other seminal documents on the separation of church and state, the right to religious liberty, trial by jury and other founding principles. It was designed to "slip into one's pocket". [and[ had more to do with preparing the minds of American colonists for the American Revolution than the larger but less accessible works of Coke, Sidney and Locke" (Hudson, 580-85). Care's influence is clear "in the writings of the founding fathers of the United States""Samuel Adams, John Adams, John Dickinson and Alexander Hamilton". Jefferson added two copies of English Liberties to his library and arranged that it be included in the library of the University of Virginia" (Schwoerer, 231-5). A handsome copy in contemporary sheep. Care's English Liberties contains "the most important documents and statements in English history and law concerning liberty, property and the rights of the individual". Benjamin Franklin knew its contents thoroughly" (Lemay, Life, 74). This first edition features a printing of the Magna Charta, "a symbol of political liberty and the foundation of constitutional government" (Grams, Great Experiment, 95), and was published in 1682 "to provide uneducated and inexperienced English persons with documents and information about the law and their rights". praising England's 'fundamental laws [as] coeval with government' and describing the Magna Charta as 'Declaratory of the principal grounds of the Fundamental Laws and Liberties of England.' Celebrating law in another piece as second only to the gospel, he described it in English Liberties as 'the Best Birthright the Subject hath". Care regarded the essence of this birthright as the 'privilege not to be exempt from the law of the land, but to be freed in Person and Estate from Arbitrary Violence and Oppression" (Morrison & Zook, Revolutionary Currents, 46-7). "Care advocated a radical theory of liberty of the religious conscience for all persons". and argued for the principle of separation of church and state". his ideas are comparable to those of John Locke on that subject and were in print before Locke's Letter on Toleration." Care especially promoted "an abiding respect for the merits of trial by jury as a bulwark of English rights and liberties. English Liberties". helped to transmit this 'jury ideology' and other ideas about fundamental laws and the rights and liberties of Englishmen to 18th-century England and the American colonies" (Schwoerer, Ingenious Mr. Henry Care, xxvi). On publication English Liberties "became a publishing phenomenon, with successive editions circulating around the Atlantic world in the 18th century, its small size""it could literally fit into a pocket""enabling knowledge of English rights to reach the peripheries of the empire" (Yirush, Settler, Liberty and Empire, 29). It is said to have "had more to do with preparing the minds of American colonists for the American Revolution than the larger but less accessible works of Coke, Sidney and Locke" (Hudson, William Penn's English Liberties, 585).In America, English Liberties "played an important role in spreading concepts about English law, history, government, liberties and especially juries". Colonists found in Care's English Liberties support of their views about the Saxons' Magna Charta as a reaffirmation of old laws guaranteeing [Attributes: First Edition]

SADUCISMUS TRIUMPHATUS: OR, FULL AND PLAIN EVIDENCE CONCERNING WITCHES AND APPARITIONS. In Two Parts. The First treating of their Possibility, The Second of their Real Existence

London: Thom Newcomb, 1682, 1681. Second edition and with the translation, with additional material. Engraved frontispiece of Saul and Samuel, and a second full page engraving introducing the book which contains engraved vignettes of magical devils and extraordinary occurrences, also with a few small textual illustrations. 8vo, in a pleasing binding of full contemporary calf, restored at the back, incorporating raised bands, and gilt lettering. [16], 52, 162, [6], 78, [12], 273, 67, 45, 24, errata pp. A handsome and pleasing copy. Well preserved and with the text-block, clean, unpressed and unwashed. The first important work in English pertaining to Witchcraft and “the most influential English philosophical treatise on the subject of witches and witchcraft”. ‘The intention here was to prove by intellectual reasoning that the supernatural was an absolute reality. Glanvill and his contemporary the Cambrige Platonist Henry More, attacked the extreme skepticism in these matters espoused by Descartes and Hobbes. Their defense of witchcraft, made after extensive enquiry into the many contemporary reported incidents of it, 'was the natural result of an attempt to find an empirical ground for a belief in the supernatural' (DNB) and was intended to combat what they believed to be an implied atheism in the thinking of Descartes and Hobbes.' see also Croft.

Nineteen Years Travels through the most Eminent Places in the Habitable World. London, for John Wright & Thomas Passinger, 1682.

1682. (8), 481, (7) pp. With woodcut frontispiece and 6 woodcut plates, all folding. Later brown sheepskin with giltstamped red spine label. Marbled endpapers. 8vo. Somewhat later edition of this famous work that saw twelve editions by 1814, originally published under the title "The total discourse, of the rare adventures, and painefull peregrinations of long nineteene years travayles, from Scotland to the most famous kingdomes in Europe, Asia, and Affrica" in 1632; a first draft had appeared in 1614. No copy of this 1682 edition at auction in 35 years. - Lithgow, a Scot, travelled extensively throughout the Levant in three journeys between 1610 and 1622, visiting Greece, Constantinople and the Eastern Mediterranean from 1610-13; North Africa and Italy from 1614-19; and Spain from 1619-21. "He travelled mostly on foot and had a greater knowledge of the interior of the countries he visited than most travellers of this period. He provides interesting details of the society, men, and manners he observed" (Blackmer). Lithgow's work is "probably the earliest authority for coffee-drinking in Europe, Turkish baths, a pigeon post between Aleppo and Bagdad, the long Turkish tobacco-pipes, artificial incubation, and the importation (since about 1550) of currants from Zante to England" (DNB). - Frontispiece laid down. Several minor defects to paper, pre-dating the printing process, to fols. G2, Aa1, Ee3, and Hh5 (hence slight loss to individual letters). Trimmed rather closely, with some headlines shaved. Sadler, an English lawyer, politician, academic administrator, Hebrew scholar and millenarian thinker, was a Member of Parliament, Town Clerk of London, private secretary to Oliver Cromwell, member of the Parliamentarian Council of State and was Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. First published during the second phase of the Civil War, in 1649, the Rights of the Kingdom is an elaborate defense of Parliament's actions against the monarchy with an emphasis on the execution of Charles I. Stated simply, regicide is condoned by the English Constitution. As indicated by the final part of the title, the book is also important as a statement of English millenarianism, which held that the Civil War and Cromwell were harbingers of the Second Coming of Christ.       Nürnberg, Andreas Knorz für Georg Scheurer, 1682. - Erste Ausgabe.

1682. 4to. (16), 170, (20) pp., final blank. With engraved vignette to title, printed in red an black. (With:) Ettmüller, Michael. De virtute opii diaphoretica dissertatio. Leipzig & Jena, Krebs for Bielcke, [1682]. 48 pp. Contemp. marbled half vellum. Second edition of this early monograph on the pharmacological and therapeutic aspects of opium. "The main text is a reissue of the 1674 edition" (Krivatsy). Wedel not only evaluates the medical literature but also all available travel reports. The chapter entitled "An aphrodisiacum sit opium & mulierem excitet?" provides an overview of the various opinions, including Saar's account from his East Indian journeys noting the use of opium in Batavian brothels, as well as Garcia's contradictory information that opium leads to infertility and impotence (p. 128f.). The title vignette depicts a Turkish opium picker: scratching the poppy seed capsule with his knife, he collects the sap. The appendix contains the first printing of a dissertation on the qualities of opium, written by Michael Ettmüller (d. 1683), who dedicated his work to his colleage Wedel. - G. W. Wedel (1645-1721) was one of the principal physicians of his age. He authored 49 books and was the teacher of several progressively minded medical men. He is credited with the timeless aphorism that "medicine is nothing but the incessant renewal of ignorance." His "Opiologia" won him admission to the Academy of Naturalists, the still-extant "Leopoldina" in Halle. "Wedel stood midway between medieval and modern world views, defending astrology and alchemy and championing iatrochemistry" (DSB XIV, 212). "Wedel appears to have been one of the first to employ the word physiology in its present restricted sense" (Thorndike VIII, s. v.). - Evenly browned throughout; binding slightly rubbed. A fine copy.
