Nineteen Years Travels through the most Eminent Places in the Habitable World. London, for John Wright & Thomas Passinger, 1682.

1682. (8), 481, (7) pp. With woodcut frontispiece and 6 woodcut plates, all folding. Later brown sheepskin with giltstamped red spine label. Marbled endpapers. 8vo. Somewhat later edition of this famous work that saw twelve editions by 1814, originally published under the title "The total discourse, of the rare adventures, and painefull peregrinations of long nineteene years travayles, from Scotland to the most famous kingdomes in Europe, Asia, and Affrica" in 1632; a first draft had appeared in 1614. No copy of this 1682 edition at auction in 35 years. - Lithgow, a Scot, travelled extensively throughout the Levant in three journeys between 1610 and 1622, visiting Greece, Constantinople and the Eastern Mediterranean from 1610-13; North Africa and Italy from 1614-19; and Spain from 1619-21. "He travelled mostly on foot and had a greater knowledge of the interior of the countries he visited than most travellers of this period. He provides interesting details of the society, men, and manners he observed" (Blackmer). Lithgow's work is "probably the earliest authority for coffee-drinking in Europe, Turkish baths, a pigeon post between Aleppo and Bagdad, the long Turkish tobacco-pipes, artificial incubation, and the importation (since about 1550) of currants from Zante to England" (DNB). - Frontispiece laid down. Several minor defects to paper, pre-dating the printing process, to fols. G2, Aa1, Ee3, and Hh5 (hence slight loss to individual letters). Trimmed rather closely, with some headlines shaved. Sadler, an English lawyer, politician, academic administrator, Hebrew scholar and millenarian thinker, was a Member of Parliament, Town Clerk of London, private secretary to Oliver Cromwell, member of the Parliamentarian Council of State and was Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge. First published during the second phase of the Civil War, in 1649, the Rights of the Kingdom is an elaborate defense of Parliament's actions against the monarchy with an emphasis on the execution of Charles I. Stated simply, regicide is condoned by the English Constitution. As indicated by the final part of the title, the book is also important as a statement of English millenarianism, which held that the Civil War and Cromwell were harbingers of the Second Coming of Christ.       Nürnberg, Andreas Knorz für Georg Scheurer, 1682. - Erste Ausgabe. – Exlibris – VD17 23:281536K; Goed. III 275, 1; Kroker 1, 206; Faber du Faur 584.         Opiologia ad mentem academiae naturae curiosorum. Jena, Samuel Krebs' Wwe. für Johann Bielcke, 1682.

1682. 4to. (16), 170, (20) pp., final blank. With engraved vignette to title, printed in red an black. (With:) Ettmüller, Michael. De virtute opii diaphoretica dissertatio. Leipzig & Jena, Krebs for Bielcke, [1682]. 48 pp. Contemp. marbled half vellum. Second edition of this early monograph on the pharmacological and therapeutic aspects of opium. "The main text is a reissue of the 1674 edition" (Krivatsy). Wedel not only evaluates the medical literature but also all available travel reports. The chapter entitled "An aphrodisiacum sit opium & mulierem excitet?" provides an overview of the various opinions, including Saar's account from his East Indian journeys noting the use of opium in Batavian brothels, as well as Garcia's contradictory information that opium leads to infertility and impotence (p. 128f.). The title vignette depicts a Turkish opium picker: scratching the poppy seed capsule with his knife, he collects the sap. The appendix contains the first printing of a dissertation on the qualities of opium, written by Michael Ettmüller (d. 1683), who dedicated his work to his colleage Wedel. - G. W. Wedel (1645-1721) was one of the principal physicians of his age. He authored 49 books and was the teacher of several progressively minded medical men. He is credited with the timeless aphorism that "medicine is nothing but the incessant renewal of ignorance." His "Opiologia" won him admission to the Academy of Naturalists, the still-extant "Leopoldina" in Halle. "Wedel stood midway between medieval and modern world views, defending astrology and alchemy and championing iatrochemistry" (DSB XIV, 212). "Wedel appears to have been one of the first to employ the word physiology in its present restricted sense" (Thorndike VIII, s. v.). - Evenly browned throughout; binding slightly rubbed. A fine copy.       London : Awnsham Churchill, 1682 A good copy of the 1st edition in later full leather binding with frontispiece and 23 full page plates, of which 10 are folding. Leybourn's first work on Dialing was published in 1669; it's popularity (particularly given the use of sun-dials and astrolabes by the navy at that time) led to this expanded folio version, funded by subscription. William Leybourn was a leading practical mathematician and authored a number of works on surveying, Gunter's Line and measuring tables. This copy has been rebound fairly recently in a full pigskin binding with raised bands and title and author labels. New endpapers have been added, and the frontispiece relaid and repaired (there was loss to the side edge and a little damage to the portrait). Contents with title page; To the Reader 3pp; Contents of the Tractates [the work is arranged in 11 sections or Tractates] 4pp; errata 1p; Introduction 12pp; text with plates, tables and diagrams 330 pp; finis; final blank. The pagination is erratic but the text is continuous. P119/120 is missing and has been replaced by a facsimile. There is some crinkling and loss to page edges, particularly at the beginning and areas of browning/spotting. The plate at p295 has been relaid - with some loss to the bottom margin. There is occasional ink annotation and highlighting. Please ask for more images to fully assess condition.

[With] Zee en Lant-Reize, door verscheide Gewesten van Oostindien

Amsterdam Widow of Jacob van Meurs 1682 - First edition. Folio, Two parts in one. [10], 47, 40-192, 195-240, [2] pp., engraved portrait of Nieuhof trimmed and mounted, engraved additional title, 4 engraved plates, 2 of which double page (including map of Brazil), engraved coat-of-arms, illustrations in the text; [2], 218, 217-308, [4] pp, 45 engraved plates, 29 of which double-page, including maps, old vellum lettered in ink, yapp edges, slight fraying to front free endpaper, a good clean example. A beautifully illustrated account of travels in Brazil and the East Indies. Nieuhof (1618-1672), a Dutch traveller and official, left two very interesting accounts of his years spent in Dutch Brazil and the Dutch East Indies. He was employed by the Dutch West india Company (WIC) in Brazil from 1640 to explore the regions between Maranhão and the São Francisco Rivers, and made a particular study of the vicinity of Pernambuco. He left Brazil in 1649, after the Portuguese victory in the Second Battle of Guararapes. Upon his return, Nieuhof joined the service of the Dutch East India Company (or "VOC"). In service of the VOC he resided several years in Batavia, before being appointed in 1654 steward of an embassy to the relatively new Qing emperor of China under Peter de Goyer and Jacob de Keyser, which aimed to gain trading rights on China's southern coast. In his several travels in the East he visited Sumatra, Java, Amboyna, Formosa (Taiwan), China, Malacca, India, Ceylon, Persia, and St. Helena. His narratives give very informative accounts of the places he visited.         Traité de la Communion sous les deux especes

Paris: Sebastien Mabre-Cramoisy, 1682. 12mo (149 x 80 mm). [8], 461, [2], [1 blank] pp. Printer's engraved stork device on title, engraved headpiece, initial, and two tailpieces. Scattered dampstaining, first table leaf (ã2) rehinged, front free endpaper with repaired tear. Contemporary speckled calf, sides with the gold-tooled arms of Madame de Maintenon's library in the Maison Royale de Saint-Louis at Saint-Cyr: a cross topped with a crown and with fleurs-de-lis terminating the 3 other ends, within a single gilt fillet, spine gold-tooled and -lettered in 7 compartments, board edges gilt, red-sprinkled edges (cracks and scrapes to front cover, discreet old repairs to joints, wear to joints and extremities). Provenance: Françoise d'Aubigné, Marquise de Maintenon (1635-1719), morganatic second wife of Louis XIV, supra-libros as above of her library at the Maison de St. Cyr, and with a contemporary or early 18th-century inscription at head of title, "Ex Libris Cong[regatio]nis Missionis Domus S[anc]ti Cyrici"; Charles van der Elst, bookplate.*** first edition, rare association copy, from Madame de Maintenon's library at the Maison Royale de Saint-Louis at Saint-Cyr, the first secular girls' school in France. Madame de Maintenon knew Bossuet well from court (both had tutored the Royal offspring) and shared his religious views and respect for reasoned argument as the best weapon against Protestantism. This copy of his treatise on Communion must have been read by the pupils of the school, the brainchild and life's project of Louis XIV's remarkable second wife. For a person of deep piety, Madame de Maintenon, who was to a large extent a "self-made" woman, had an extraordinarily romantic life. To sum up the most relevant details, following the death of her first husband the poet and playwright Paul Scarron, Françoise née d'Aubigné, now Madame Scarron, became governess of the King's illegitimate children with his then mistress Madame de Montespan, thanks to the latter's friendship. Her successful nursing of their son the Duc de Maine through a serious illness and overall skill as a governess earned her royal approval and a reward of 200,000 livres, with which she purchased the lands and title of Maintenon. "Newly ennobled and financially secure, Madame de Maintenon now took her own place as a titled aristocrat among the courtiers of Versailles. When the affair between Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan collapsed, Maintenon encouraged the king to reconcile with his estranged wife, Marie-Thérèse of Austria. The successful reconciliation between the spouses enhanced Maintenon's standing in court but earned her the enmity of her old patron, Madame de Montespan. "After the sudden death of Queen Marie-Thérèse on July 9, 1683, the king drew closer to Maintenon. On October 9, 1683, the archbishop of Paris married the couple in a private ceremony. The bride's modest social origins raised a problem, since Louis XIV had insisted on dynastic marriages for other members of his family. The marriage was never publicly announced, although the court quickly perceived that Madame de Maintenon had assumed the role and duties of Louis XIV's legitimate wife. The private marriage was also morganatic; Maintenon would never assume the title of queen and no relative of hers could claim the right to the throne. "In 1684 Maintenon began her life's work: the construction of a school for the education of daughters of the impoverished nobility [of which there were increasing numbers]. Situated in 1686 at Saint-Cyr, the Institute of Saint Louis was generously subsidized by Louis XIV. Maintenon personally supervised the direction of the school, designed to serve two hundred and fifty students. The school possessed a comparatively sophisticated curriculum, featuring courses in religion, reading, writing, mathematics, Latin, music, painting, dancing, needlework, and home economics. Dissatisfied with the narrowly religious education provided by the convent schools of the period, Maintenon founded her own lay group of teachers, the Dames of Saint-Louis, to provide instruction. Maintenon insisted that dialogue rather than lecture was to be the primary means of education in the Saint-Cyr classroom..." (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Maintenon regulated every detail of the school, including the curriculum. Bossuet's history of the origin, development, and controversies surrounding Communion would have been proper reading for the older girls. Only a handful of books are known bearing Maintenon's personal arms; most of those recorded are adorned with one of several different crosses, the insignia of the school at St. Cyr. These St. Cyr binding stamps are described in the 1908 Archives de la Société des collectionneurs d'ex-libris (see below). Quentin Bauchart states that those stamps on which the cross is covered with an overall design of fleurs-de-lis belonged to Mme de Maintenon's personal library, while the books stamped with plain crosses (as here) were part of the school library. The distinctions between the two collections were tenuous, as Mme. de Maintenon's residence was directly adjacent to the library (Archives, p. 88). Declaring that "all are of equal merit as far as the binding is concerned, and they bring a high price at auction" (p. 77), Quentin-Bauchart listed 40 books from the Maintenon / St. Cyr library (most in red morocco, unlike this plain copy which would have been used by the girls), including several other works by Bossuet (nos. 28, 30, 31). In spite of Mme. de Maintenon's efforts to maintain a secular school for girls, the school's funding came from the Church, via the Abbey of Saint-Denis, and in 1692 the church hierarchy, who disapproved of the lay teachers, ordered that the school become a regular convent. Maintenon retired to St. Cyr in 1715 after the death of Louis XI; she died there four years later and was buried in the church choir. The school was closed after secularization, in 1793. Tchemerzine 2:371. On the binding, see Archives de la Société des collectionneurs d'ex-libris 15-16 (1908), pp. 87-91; and Quentin-Bauchart, Les Femmes bibliophiles, pp. 269-290, & figure 8.

Scarce English edition. Ludolf (1624-1704), is regarded as the father of modern Ethiopian studies. "A work full of recondite and important information on the origin of the Abyssinians, the climate, soil, productions, etc." Lowndes. "The land of Ethiopia had long fascinated Europeans, not merely as an exotic and foreign land full of strange beasts, as evidenced by the incredibly ferocious looking hippo portrayed below, but also as an ancient and independent Christian empire beyond the realms of Islam which hemmed them in. It had adopted Christianity in the 4th century A.D. but had been cut off from Western Europe by the spread of Islam across northern Africa and the Middle East. In the Middle Ages the myth of Prester John, a powerful Christian prince and potential ally against the Muslim world, grew in the minds of Europeans, and when contacts were re-established with Ethiopia in the 15th century it seemed to fit the bill. When the Portuguese sent military aid, to counter Islamic threats to their trading interests in the region in the 16th century, Jesuit missionaries followed them. They became so influential at court that they converted the Emperor and became a threat to the native Monophysite church, leading to their expulsion in 1632" St. John's College, Cambridge.         Ottaviano Cesare Augusto. Melodrama da rappresentarsi nel Teatro Ducale dell'Altezza Serenissima di Mantova l'anno M.DC.LXXXII. Venetia, Francesco Nicolini, 1682

Nicolini Franc, 1682. in - 4 picc., pp. 60, leg. epoca cart. rustico. Ottimo esempl.
