Small-4to. pp. (8), 215, (1), with woodcut title-vignette, 1 folded table and 13 (10 folded) engraved plates. Contemporary boards, spine with 2 red gilt lettered labels. Hagen II, 209; Horn & Schenkling 21794; Nissen ZBI, 4054. First French edition; the original Dutch edition was published in 1669, entitled 'Historia Insectorum generalis'. "Swammerdam's thesis about insects was fundamentally new and significant. For his contemporaries, as for Aristotle, there existed three good arguments, that not only placed the insects far from the higher animals, but even tended to remove them from the realm of subjects open to scientific study. These arguments were: insects lack internal anatomy; they originate by spontaneous generation; and they develop by metamorphosis. Swammerdam believed that all three arguments were false and devoted a wide variety of investigations to refute these ideas" (D.S.B. XIII, pp. 168-175). One leaf with 2 small tears.

Full calf blond glossy signed House Niedrée ca 1850. spine tooled raised the grotesque ripple. Piece of black morocco title and second red morocco. Triple Net framework and arms stamped on the flat. One of the great works of controversy Bossuet published just before the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 and denouncing the errors of the Protestant religion. This book is also a very special story: Marie de Duras was shaken in his faith by reading "The exhibition of the Christian faith," she arranged a meeting between the largest Protestant authority in France, the minister jean Claude and Bossuet, bishop of Meaux; This interview lasted five hours before 5 witnesses. Bossuet wrote a book, it and the pastor was not long before answering. When Marie de Duras, she renounced his faith and converted to the Catholic Church. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

*****. In-12. Collation : (36), 48, (12), 345, (8), 345 à 435 pp. Veau glacé, dos à nerfs orné, tranches mouchetées. (Reliure de l'époque.).

Landwehr, Low Countries, 680 (for the identical Brussels Foppens edition of 1683). Praz II, p.168-69. Near Fine First of the Brussels Foppens editions of Veen's enduringly popular "Emblems from Horace" (principally from the Odes and Satires), a classic of the emblematic literature, originally published, in Antwerp, in 1607, then reprinted in numerous editions with polyglot text, ensuring it a Europe-wide readership. Van Veen was among the most important Dutch emblematists of the 17th-century, as well as Antwerp's leading artist and dean of the painters' guild of St. Luke. Peter Paul Rubens entered his studio, in 1594 or 1595, as an apprentice, and Veen's role as a classically educated humanist artist (a pictor doctus) influenced Rubens deeply.

Utrecht: Johannes Ribbius, 1682. Four volumes, quarto, with an allegorical frontispiece to each volume, 15 folding engraved maps by Sanson and 60 engravings by Romeyn de Hooghe (many folding); contemporary vellum. A beautiful set of the first edition of this handsome work on the East Indies and other parts of the world; with a wonderful series of sixty engraved plates, in fine well-inked impressions, by the Dutch master of book-illustration and print-making, Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708). De Hooghe's engravings show the treasures to be had from the New World, often depicted with Dutch colonists looking on as natives work. They are accompanied by a series of folding maps by the important French cartographer Nicolas Sanson d'Abbeville. A revised version would be published as Les Indes Orientales et Occidentales in 1710.The text is based on a variety of original voyage accounts, and gives extensive descriptions of new world peoples and their products. The engravings offer a baroque profusion of images, every plate overflowing with pictorial elements incorporating peoples, customs, plants and animals, as well as views of the East Indies and particularly Indonesia, and India, Japan, the West-Indies, Brazil, even Persia, Turkey, Abyssinia and South Africa. "The illustrations by Romeyn de Hooghe belong to the most interesting of his oeuvre... " (Landwehr). The publication is discussed at length, and a number of the Romeyn de Hooghe images are reproduced, by Benjamin Schmidt iin "Inventing Exoticism: Geography, Globalism, and Europe's Early Modern World" (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015). Some light worming at the end of the first volume but a fine set.

Small quarto, four parts in one volume (part 4 with separate pagination), engraved frontispiece by J. Luiken (dated 1683) and 16 plates (repairs to tears in two plates, one with insubstantial loss at bottom corner); a few upper margins a little short but a very good copy in full vellum antique. Very rare, the first fully illustrated edition of this seventeenth-century imaginary voyage to western Australia, based on the story of the wreck of the VOC ship Vergulde Draeck in 1656. The plates are thus early - if imaginary - depictions of the Australian coast, and include two coastal scenes depicting the first meeting with the local population, the Australian court, and the fabulous fauna. The importance of the detailed and inventive illustrations has been overlooked: after the various editions of Pelsaert, this is the second major work to depict life and conditions on the Australian mainland, however fancifully. This work also has an important connection with Vlamingh's exceedingly rare Journaal wegens de Voyagie of 1701, as Vlamingh's very real voyage to Australia in 1696-7 only made it separately into print as a companion volume to the second Dutch edition of this imaginary work. The story is based on the 1656 wreck of the Vergulde Draeck, which ran aground on the coast north of modern-day Perth. Seventy-five of the crew and passengers made it ashore. The captain Pieter Albertsz despatched a crew of seven in a small boat to Batavia and a rescue expedition was mounted, but found no trace of the survivors; the possibility that some of the crew survived on mainland Australia was an enticing fiction. Vairasse openly used this real-life voyage as the model for his own, having the similarly named Goude Draak wreck in western Australia the same year as its namesake. After the ship founders, some seventy-four women and three hundred and seven men survive on the barren shore, from whence they journey to the land of the Sevarambes, an Australian utopia. The work, which also borrows features from the wreck of the Batavia, is one of the most important imaginary voyages to Terra Australis, and is cited as a direct influence on Swift. The book thus forms an important link in the long history of seventeenth-century Dutch exploration of the west Australian coast, not least because it dates from a time when the lines between imaginary and real voyages were blurred. This Dutch edition was translated by Gerard van Broekhuizen the same year as the French collected edition, and seemingly based on the French text. The frontispiece is by Jan Luyken, and the plates (four signed) by Johannes van den Aveele (or Avelen).

First edition, second issue: 'the second of Dryden's political satires'.The acquittal of the Earl of Shaftesbury on charges of treason for opposing the succession of the Catholic James was regarded as a great Whig victory. [Attributes: First Edition]

Emblemata Amatoria. Emblemes d'Amour en Quatre Langue

London: "Chez L'Amoureaux", 1682. Plate 20 and text 21 mounted back-to-back, some pale browning, vellum somewhat soiled. 8vo (140 x 95 mm). Engraved throughout. Engraved title, sonnet in French, frontispiece, sonnet in Dutch, 44 engraved plates by Jan van Vianen, each facing text in Latin, Italian, French and Dutch, each printed on one side only. Early 18th-century vellum Provenance: C.J.M. Kauscol (inscription on flyleaf); William Charles Smith (bookplate, 1882 gift inscription from "F.R.S."). Although the imprint is given as London (Londre), this edition appears to predate that of Ayres of 1683, as Landwehr claims. The engravings are much more finely executed, with greater detail. At least five editions were issued between 1683 and 1714 in London by Philip Ayres. These were based on the love emblems of Crispyn de Passe, Otto Vaenius, Heinsius, and Thronus Cupidinus. The Dutch artist Jan van Vianen went to England in his youth and, according to Praz, reworked his plates (in the reverse) from the originals, adding better perspective than in the originals. Landwehr, Emblem and fable books, 216; Praz, pp. 127-131 & 323; De Vries, Emblemata 232 & p. 43.

Old Methodist library stamp on front paste down.<br>Richard Simon (1638-1712) was a French controversialist and influential biblical critic, often called the "father of biblical criticism." Simon was an Oratorian and worked as the cataloguer of the library's Oriental books as an eastern language specialist. His criticism of the Old Testament (Histoire critique du Vieux Testament, 1678) was censored (and destroyed) in France, due to Simon's statements that Moses could not have been the author of the Pentateuch and his criticism of the early church fathers. "One of Simon's goals in this work was to prove to Protestants that the Hebrew OT (and all versions and translations) and its text were too unreliable and uncertain to be the basis of the faith, thus affirming the long-held Catholic view." Watson Mills, Mercer Commentary on the New Testament (2003), p. 42. Simon was heavily influenced by Spinoza's historical methods and he responds to Spinoza's criticism in this text. While persecuted by Boussuet and the French authorities, Simon's suppressed work had considerable influence because it used a historical-critical methodology for Biblical criticism. Simon's attempts to reaffirm the soundness of the Catholic Church on a historical - scientific basis by opening the Bible up to criticism and interpretation was self defeating, because it allowed for more radical revisions and reassessment of faith and scripture. The English translation was widely read. Newton and Locke both read and wrote extensively on Simon's work. See: Westfall, Never at Rest: A biography of Isaac Newton 1983, p. 490. Wing S3798

[Spain]: publisher not identified, [1682; really ca. 1699]. 4to (20 cm; 8"). [4] ff., 292 [i.e., 308] pp. Of Portuguese-Jewish origins, Enríquez Gómez was a dramatist and novelist who found it both convenient and necessary to flee Spain for France in about 1636 (when he was about 35 years old) and luckily found favor at the court of Louis XIII. Around 1657 he moved to Amsterdam and openly professed his Judaism, causing him to be burned in effigy in Spain.    His present novel mixes elements of the picaresque with fantasy. As one scholar succinctly put it: "The Siglo Pitagorico of Antonio Enriquez Gomez (1644) . . . ingeniously replace[s] the passage of a servant from master to master by the transmigrations of a soul from body to body. The longest prose section of this partially versified narrative was the 'Life' of Don Gregorio Guadana, [who is out and out] a picaro" (Chandler, p. 13). The same scholar neatly connects this Spanish novel to an English one that appeared 100 years later (1749): "It is in the device of satire upon estates through transmigrations in lieu of successive employments that Fielding [in his Journey from this World to the Next] recalls the Siglo Pitagorico of Enriquez Gomez" (p. 802).    This is a "fictitious imprint" in that => its given date is false, there being two distinct editions each with a title-page stating it is "Segun el exemplar en Rohan, De la emprenta de Lavrentio Maurry. MDCLXXXII" but with one edition's last numbered page being 268 and the other's being 292 (i.e., 308) as offered here. Charles Amiel argues convincingly based on textual analysis, in his critical edition of the work, that the 292/308-page edition in hand is a => counterfeit of the true 1682 edition. Much less convincingly he postulates a publication date as late as 1725, the year before the third edition was printed; whereas had he examined the watermarks in the paper of the text he would have limited the range of publication dates to ca. 1699 — a dating based on my personal experience of almost 50 years cataloguing Hispanic books and manuscripts and always paying special attention to watermarks (DMS).         Palau 79834; Salva 1789; Frank W. Chandler, Literature of Roguery (2 vols.; Boston, New York: Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1907); Charles Amiel, El siglo pitagórico y Vida de Don Gregorio Guadaña (Paris: Ediciones Hispanoamericanas, 1977), pp. xxv–xxxvi. For biographical data: Archivo biográfico de España, Portugal, e Iberoamérica, fiche 285, frames 107–73. Contemporary limp vellum, a bit shrunken and cockled, rear free endpaper lacking; remnants of ties. Title-page torn away at outside corners and repaired long, long ago without loss of print; pp. 73–80 clearly supplied from a smaller copy; the expectable sorts of dog-ears, creasing, and soiling only. => A decent, interesting copy of an interesting picaresque/fantasy novel of the 17th century.

      - Title within elaborate calligraphic woodcut border (title a little soiled & frayed around edges). 242 leaves (the last a blank). Small folio, cont. blind-stamped panelled pigskin over wooden boards (binding somewhat soiled, pigskin at one corner worn away), remains of clasps & catches. Hamburg: A. Lichtenstein, 1682. First edition, extremely rare, of this large and comprehensive Hamburg manual of accounting techniques. Only two other copies seem to be extant: one at the British Library and the other Tübingen. The book was a success and a second edition was published in 1714 under the title Der Werth-geschätzte Handels-Mann. Joachim Rademann was a chartered accountant at Hamburg. At the end of this, his first published work, he describes himself a "young man" and, according to Schröder, he married in 1683; otherwise, nothing seems to be known of his life. Based on Christoph Achatius Hager's treatise Buchhalten uber proper Commission und Compagnia Handlungen, first published at Hamburg ca. 1625, Rademann's book takes into consideration the changes and innovations that trading and coinage had seen since then, and focuses on practical matters. The general ledger section comprises a Memorial, a Journal, and a Hauptbuch; the associated accounts include a Cassa-Buch (cash journal), a Banca-Buch (bank account), an Unkostenbuch (book of charges), a Monat-Buch (monthly journal), and a Factura-Buch and Rechnungs-Copey-Buch (books of invoices). Precise examples taken from actual trading accounts at Hamburg are given throughout. "Rademann dispenses with long theoretical preambles and instead, when differentiating between debtor and creditor, points to the works of Hager and Gebhardt Overheiden. To the associated accounts, Rademann adds the Portbuch von Briefe, today's petty cash book. In the Memorial, Rademann follows his predecessor Hager, but adds a wealth of detail. The same applies to the Journal? The impersonal accounts that follow are remarkable not only for their multitude, but also for the exceptionally delicate and skillful handling of the accounts. Rademann's work is nothing short of excellent."-Penndorf, Geschichte der Buchhaltung in Deutschland, p. 219 (in trans.). Very good copy of this extremely rare book. First fifteen leaves with light dampstaining. ? Hausdorfer 198. Historical Accounting Literature 28. Hoock/Jeannin II, R.1. 1. Humpert 396. Schröder VI, 3077, 1. Not in Goldsmiths, Kress, or Rapp. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
