ALESSIO, Santo)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Michel Hoyer
s.n. (Antwerp / Munich), 1680. Flammulae Amoris Versibus, et Iconibus Exornatae ['Sparkles of Augustine's Love' - Emblem Book] Author: Michel Hoyer 1680 second edition of this significant emblem book by Flemish priest and Latin poet Michel Hoyer (1593-1650), s.n. (Munich, Germany), 3 1/8 x 5 1/8 inches tall full blind stamped leather bound, hand lettering to spine, two functioning leather and metal clasps, all page edges green, elaborately engraved title page, 25 full-page engraved emblems, several engraved printer's devices, [4], 199, [9] pp., complete (including blank endpapers). Cracking to bottom and top of front hinge, but all holds, and the binding is quite firm. Contemporaneous ink notations, marked out, to verso of half title. 3/8-inch piece excised from bottom of title page and 1/2-inch square chip from lower tip of the next two leaves (F. Timothy Mayr's dedication) - none impacting text or illustration. Small bit of worming to two blank rear free-endpapers. Otherwise, a very good copy - unusually clean and bright, devoid of marks. A re-issue of the 1629 Antwerp first edition, using the same plates. Uncommon (the substantially different 1708 third edition is much more often seen). In this work, Hoyer, an Augustinian hermit, uses 25 magnificent emblems engraved by Guillaume Collaert, followed by his own extensive Latin poems and a brief selection of commonplaces from Augustine's works, to follow the great saint's remarkable career from sinner to saint. Drawing primarily on the 'Confessions' and a few pseudo-Augustinian texts of a similar slant, Hoyer shows us not on … [Click Below for Full Description]

JANSSONIUS JOHANNES
1680. Incisione in rame, dipinta a mano, mm 440x545. The most decorative wind chart ever printed; wind heads in successive ages are placed around the compass which is divided into 32 parts and text in six languages. This chart was first published as plate 1 in Jansonnius' 1650 Atlas Maritimus or volume 5 in his Atlantis Majoris and later in "Accurata Orbis antiqui Delineati … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: P. Landry|& C.P. Regis, 1680. Fine. P. Landry & C.P.

Opera molto rara. Ex collezione F.H. (Lugt 3373) Etching, without date and signature. A magnificent impression, rich in tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with wide margins, in good condition. Marco Sanmartino or Sammartino was a Neapolitan painter lived in the second half of the seventeenth century, according to Bartsch active around 1680. Malvasia mentions it under the name of Sanmarchi Venetian, almost certainly the artist's stay in Venice. Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
Beautiful map of the continent filled with details typical of the late 17th Century. The Nile appears according to the ancient pattern, arising from the two lakes of Zaire and Zafflan. Tartary, China, Japan - De Wit, 1680
1680. "Magnae Tartariae Magni Mogolis Imperii Iaponiae et Chinae Nova Descriptio". Copper engraving published 1680 by Frederick de Wit in Amsterdam. Original hand colouring. Size: 44 x 55 cm. Map of Northeastern Asia, extending from the Island of Formosa, the Ganges and the eastern part of the Caspian Sea to Yedso, Tartaria, Siberia and Molgomzaia in Russian Asia in the North. No western exploration has yet reached Asia's northeast coast, and we see a conjectural rounded coastline. Plinius' Tazata Island appears north of the Arctic Circle, and a sense of Tartary's mountain ranges is given, but the topography is by no means accurate. There is geographical and historical commentary throughout Tartary. The Great Wall is shown pictorially, and many cities are named in China and northern India. The fictional Lake Chiang Mai is still shown as the source of the great rivers of Southeast Asia. Yedso (Hokkaido) is shown in a very limited way, with partial coastlines. A very interesting map, from a period when Europe's knowledge of China has greatly improved, but the depiction of northern and central Asia remains largely speculative. Decorated with finely engraved mountains and trees. Price E525,- Â

[BURNET, GILBERT].
London: Printed by J. D. for Richard Chiswell, 1680. First edition. 4to, 20th century quarter vellum, gray paper boards, black spine lettering. A pamphlet attributed to Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715), the influential theologian and prolific writer on all things theological in England and Scotland in the latter part of the 17th century. Conversion & Persecutions of Eve Cohan is a melodramatic but apparently factually based account of the religious conversion of Cohan, who became Elizabeth Verboon upon her conversion, and the travails she endured to escape alleged attempts by Jews to rescind that conversion. The narrative is similar to the plot of a play, with a full cast of characters: a father; an abusive mother; a music teacher and proselytizer; a loyal servant; a London solicitor for Jews; other Jewish converts; good Samaritans; a landlord and landlady; et al. Burnet was a self-described Latitudinarian, but he took sides on the anti-Catholic and anti-Semitic movements, although often anonymously. He was identified as the author of this tract in publisher's advertisements. Bookplate on the front paste-down of Alfred Rubens (1903-1998), the eminent British collector of Judaica. Laid in is a letter to Rubens from E. P. Goldschmidt & Co., dated May 18, 1933, offering this copy and noting: "We beg to point out that we find a copy of this tract in Maggs Catalogue of Judaica, No. 467 (1925), item 138, at the price of £6.6.0" - or three times the price Goldschmidt was offering it. A little tightly bound, but a fine copy.

The addressee of the six letters was a Professor Hommel in Bern, and their author was Jean-Baptiste Stouppe (or Stouppa, also Giovanni Battista Stoppa, c.1620-1692): 'A Swiss Calvinist who had lived in England under Cromwell, moved to France upon the death of the Lord Protector; there he won the graces of Louis XIV. He took part in the French war of conquest in the Netherlands and wrote during this war the propagandistic, anti-Dutch book La Religion des Hollandois (1673), in which he attacked the diversity of philosophical and religious parties in Holland, particulary, however, Spinozism' (Wolfenbüttel Spinoza-Ausstellung 1977, no 60). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Small 12mo [13 x 8cm], 144 pp., contemporary calf with triple gilt fillet, spine decorated with gilt acorns and morocco label, worn at extremities, upper joint cracked but firm, pages browned, with early annotations and underlinings, a sound copy overall.
