THIERS, Jean-Baptiste. 1636-1703
Orléans: D. Hotot, 1679. Contemporary mottled calf (rubbed), board edges and spine and title gilt, edges sprinkled red and brown. Nor food, nor drink, nor books, nor song sheets, nor pilgrim badges, nor popular imagery, nor clothing (new or used), nor animals (live or dead), nor money changing, nor lending, nor music playing, nor commercial letter writing, nor fortune telling.... NO!  Only Edition. Though apparently uncontroversial, this investigation into the sacred status of the steps and covered areas immediately surrounding churches and chapels was, in fact, aimed directly at the Chartres Chapter's practice of accommodating vendors at its famed cathedral. Thiers begins with Scripture and ends with the 1584 Synod of Blois, citing Church Fathers, Councilar decrees and canonical statutes in his cause.  On publication in early 1679, the Chartres Chapter immediately ordered his arrest and dispatched a mounted guard for the task. The lawmen arrived, were warmly received and served an elaborate and long dinner, during which the host had his horse shod for ice. Thiers departed into the frost and snow with his captors, and, upon passing a frozen lake, he bolted across the ice (where they could not follow) and sought refuge with his bishop, who had the charges dropped. Don't mess with the guy. In nice condition. Dupin 2953; Cioranescu 64504.

DESCARTES, Rene
Paris: Theodore Girard, 1679. 1679 EARLY Descartes Passions of the Soul Philosophy Psychology Metaphysics "It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well." - René DescartesRené Descartes was a 17th-century French philosopher whose theories and discoveries spawned an influx of commentary and responsive writings from western philosophers. He wrote numerous studies on a variety of topics including meteorology, physics, dioptrics, mechanics, and even music. According to the 'Printing and the Mind of Man', "It is no exaggeration to say that Descartes was the first of modern philosophers and one of the first modern scientists; in both branches of learning his influence has been vast The revolution he caused can be most easily found in his reassertion of the principle (lost in the Middle Ages) that knowledge, if it is to have any value, must be intelligence and not erudition. His application of modern arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which is the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science." One of Descartes more popular treatises was 'Passions of the Soul'. This work was a philosophical approach to human emotions or 'passions' and seeks to make connections on the relationships between morality and sciences. This work notably influenced 19th-century philosophers and their theories on metaphysics.Item number: #11298Price: $795DESCARTES, ReneLes passions de l'âmeParis: chez Theodore Girard, 1679.Details: · Collation: Completeo xlvii, [1], 282· Language: French· Binding: Leather; tight & secure· … [Click Below for Full Description]

According to Betz, Rossi used cartographic elements from C. Danckerts wall map from 1647, he even copied the cartouche but leaving it without text. The two copperplates were engraved by Daniel Vidman (Schilder, p. 202) possibly as early as 1653. Vidman was contracted by Giovanni Domenico de Rossi, the brother of Giovanni Giacomo, to engrave reduced versions of Blaeu's wall maps of the continents. All of them are really rare (for the map of America see Burden, The Mapping of North America, 408. He also mentions two states 1670 and 1679 and only one copy of each state were known to him). Two sheets joined, very good impression, good and wide margins, two minor restorations in the map (wormholes), otherwise in perfect condition. Artikelnummer: 75064.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Gervais Clouzier, 1679. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Jean-Baptiste Tavernier was an important 17th-century voyager known for his six voyages to Persia and India in which he bought, sold, and traded rare gems and precious metals. The events of these journeys were recorded in his "Les Six Voyages". This highly desirable book has become one of the most important references for gemologists and gem historians. Tavernier introduces his findings and arrivals at Japan, Persia, India, East Indies, Tonkin Kingdom (Vietnam), and reports on the Dutch excursions in Asia. POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]

Binding quite age toned , spotted ansd rubbed, though intact and quite handleable despite the usual mild bowing; blank preliminary leaves heavily age toned, with four lines inked from one unidentified early owner (seemingly in early German); occasional age toning and sporadic bits of foxing throughout. A tight and rather nice first Latin edition of this 2-title opus by Edward Leigh (1602-71), English gentry who fought in the English Civil War, served in Parliament (1645-49) and earned a seat at Westminster Asssembly but is mainly known as a lay writer. His "Critica Sacra, or Philologicall and Theologicall Observations upon all the Greek Words of the New Testament in order alphabeticall, &c." was published in London in 1639 and its follow-up "Critica Sacra. Observations on all the Radices or Primitive Hebrew Words of the Old Testament in order alphabeticall, wherein both they (and many derivatives . . .) are fully opened" in 1642, then published together in 1650. In 1679 they were first translated into Latin by Henricus a Middoch in this edition, which went through several printings over the next few decades.

[BETHEL, Slingsby.]
London: Printed in the Year,, 1679. Small quarto (190 x 135 mm). Disbound pamphlet. Light browning and foxing, top corner of pages creased. A very good copy. First edition of this pamphlet by the republican merchant Slingsby Bethel (1617-1697), warning of the French threat to English trade. "Bethel appeared in print again in 1679–80, as the Popish Plot allegations toppled the regime of the earl of Danby and produced a crisis for the Restoration regime. In his Account of the French Usurpation upon the Trade of England (1679), he gave voice to the capitalist spirit of the city's trading men and to the Francophobia that fuelled urban anti-Catholicism. 'Money is the primum mobile which moves the Spheres, which are the hearts and hands of men' he observed. But, given the astute commercial policies of Louis XIV, 'all the moneys of Europe' were likely to be drawn to France, leaving English traders as 'Higlers and petty Chapmen' (pp. 2–4). He advocated such immediate remedies as the limitation of French imports, the encouragement of immigration, the establishment of free ports, and the reduction of customs duties" (ODNB). BEGER, Lorenz - ARCUARIUS, Daphnaeus pseudonym -
[n.p.], MDCLXXIX [1679]. FIRST EDITION. 4to, pp. [xii], 249, [1] errata; title printed in red and black; some light browning in places, but generally clean throughout; in later sheep-backed pink boards; handwritten label on spine; boards sunned and vertical crack down centres of both covers. First edition of this unusual defence of polygamy by the German legal scholar, librarian, and numismatist Lorenz Beger (1653-1705). Beger was at the time of writing employed as the librarian to the Elector of the Palatinate, Karl Ludwig. Karl Ludwig had been married to Charlotte of Hessen-Kassel since 1650, and had two children with her. However, they were tempramentally very different, and there were tensions between the couple that led Karl Ludwig to fall in love with one of Charlotte's ladies-in-waiting, Luise von Degenfeld. In 1657 Charlotte discovered that Karl Ludwig and Luise had established a quasi-marital contract; Karl Ludwig discovered that he could not divorce her without changing the law, which he duly did, later marrying Luise. Karl Ludwig then sought to justify his earlier conduct, and was convinced that scriptural evidence could be found to justify polyamy. He charged the court librarian and antiquarian, Beger, to collate all the biblical passages which could be interpreted as a defence of the practice, and to write a book summarising and explaining these arguments; this book was then published under a pseudonym and sent to all the principal libraries in Germany, clearly as an attempt to restore Karl Ludwig's reputation in the eyes of some of his more sceptical peers. POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]
