POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]

Amstelodami (Amsterdam): Johannis a Someran, 1679. Hardcover. Folio (12 3/4" X 8½"). Full vellum with faded paper spine label. Volume I: (16pp), 288pp, (20pp index). Volume II: (20pp), 418pp, (30pp index). Preliminary title in red and black with woodblock vignette. Full-page steel-engraved portrait. Overall very good. Binding quite age toned, spotted and rubbed, though intact and quite handleable despite the usual mild bowing; blank preliminary leaves heavily age toned, with four lines inked from one unidentified early owner (seemingly in early German); occasional age toning and sporadic bits of foxing throughout. A tight and rather nice first Latin edition of this 2-title opus by Edward Leigh (1602-71), English gentry who fought in the English Civil War, served in Parliament (1645-49) and earned a seat at Westminster Assembly but is mainly known as a lay writer. His "Critica Sacra, or Philologicall and Theologicall Observations upon all the Greek Words of the New Testament in order alphabeticall, &c." was published in London in 1639 and its follow-up "Critica Sacra. Observations on all the Radices or Primitive Hebrew Words of the Old Testament in order alphabeticall, wherein both they (and many derivatives . . .) are fully opened" in 1642, then published together in 1650. In 1679 they were first translated into Latin by Henricus a Middoch in this edition, which went through several printings over the next few decades.[Attributes: First Edition]

BEGER, Lorenz - ARCUARIUS, Daphnaeus pseudonym -
[n.p.], MDCLXXIX [1679]. FIRST EDITION. 4to, pp. [xii], 249, [1] errata; title printed in red and black; some light browning in places, but generally clean throughout; in later sheep-backed pink boards; handwritten label on spine; boards sunned and vertical crack down centres of both covers. First edition of this unusual defence of polygamy by the German legal scholar, librarian, and numismatist Lorenz Beger (1653-1705). Beger was at the time of writing employed as the librarian to the Elector of the Palatinate, Karl Ludwig. Karl Ludwig had been married to Charlotte of Hessen-Kassel since 1650, and had two children with her. However, they were tempramentally very different, and there were tensions between the couple that led Karl Ludwig to fall in love with one of Charlotte's ladies-in-waiting, Luise von Degenfeld. In 1657 Charlotte discovered that Karl Ludwig and Luise had established a quasi-marital contract; Karl Ludwig discovered that he could not divorce her without changing the law, which he duly did, later marrying Luise. Karl Ludwig then sought to justify his earlier conduct, and was convinced that scriptural evidence could be found to justify polyamy. He charged the court librarian and antiquarian, Beger, to collate all the biblical passages which could be interpreted as a defence of the practice, and to write a book summarising and explaining these arguments; this book was then published under a pseudonym and sent to all the principal libraries in Germany, clearly as an attempt to restore Karl Ludwig's reputation in the eyes of some of his more sceptical peers. CNUTIUS (CNUZIO), Justus.
First edition of a medical compendium based on the doctrine of Hippocrates (Boqrat) and Galen, by a Dutch professor at the Italian university of Padua. A second edition appeared in 1679. Hippocrates, in the Islamic tradition known as Boqrat, where he is often referred to as "the first codifier of medicine", is often named together with Galen, and their works mainly survived because of the Arabic translations. Galen's insistence on a rational systematic approach to medicine, set the template for Islamic medicine, which rapidly spread throughout the Islamic world. With owner's inscription on title-page. Binding slightly rubbed; waterstain the last few leaves, first few leaves slightly tattered and some spots throughout; a fair copy.l ICCU 031138 (4 copies); Krivatsky 2525; for Cnutius: Mededelingen van het Nederlands Historisch Instituut te Rome XXXI (1961), pp. 348-349.

CRASSET, Jean and Maria Antonia de Saõ Boaventura MENEZES (translator).
First and only Portuguese edition of Jean Crasset's Histoire de l'eglise du Japon (1679), the only edition in any language to include a map of Japan. Jean Crasset, a French Jesuit, based his work on François Solier's Histoire ecclesiastique des isles et royaumes du Japon (1627) and continued the account from 1624 to 1658. It gives an elaborate history of the Jesuit mission in Japan, beginning with Francis Xaver. The plates, by Miguel (Michel) le Bouteux, show Japanese costumes, the emperor's palace and an execution of Jesuit missionaries. Bouteux copied the map from a 1646 map of Japan titled "Japponiae nova" in Antonio Francisco Cardim's Fasciculus e Japponicis floribus, an illustrated history of Jesuit martyrdom in Japan. Manoel da Sylva published a Portuguese translation of Cardim's history in 1650, which most likely served as Bouteux's direct model. It includes a key locating 36 Jesuit colleges, residences, seminaries and churches. With bookplate and owner's entry. In very good condition, with only a tiny marginal worm hole in a couple leaves and a few leaves slightly browned. The bindings contain several small wormholes and the spines and corners are slightly damaged, but they are otherwise in good condition.l Alt Japan Katalog 381; Cordier, Japonica, col. 401; for the map: Hubbard, Japoniae insulae 96.

Thomas Hobbes
London: Andrew Crooke, 1679. A very rare and scarce edition book. Read full details below. Details: -Very rare and extremely sought after book that is widely said to be the greatest English philosophical work of all time. The book argues that it is better for people to be ruled by an absolute monarch alone, rather than by the church or other forms of rule that distract from the authority of a king. The work was highly controversial in the time, some saying it advocated for a secular rule outside of church authority entirely. -The book is extremely fragile with a loose front board. The third edition of the original 1651 edition is distinguished by the upside down triangle of 25 ornaments grouped in 5 rows. The book features a beautiful Frontispiece engraving by Abraham Bosse showing a ruler, a leviathan, a head of state and his body resembles the common wealth of England. The book features a contemporary binding with heavy signs of wear and chipping but overall in fair condition. Most of the pages are in very good condition but some feature heavy foxing and browning. The book is complete except that it is missing the original folding table. The book folio measures 13" inches in length by 8" inches in width. Ships from Nashville, TN.

According to Betz, Rossi used cartographic elements from C. Danckerts wall map from 1647, he even copied the cartouche but leaving it without text. The two copperplates were engraved by Daniel Vidman (Schilder, p. 202) possibly as early as 1653. Vidman was contracted by Giovanni Domenico de Rossi, the brother of Giovanni Giacomo, to engrave reduced versions of Blaeu's wall maps of the continents. All of them are really rare (for the map of America see Burden, The Mapping of North America, 408. He also mentions two states 1670 and 1679 and only one copy of each state were known to him). POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]

Afrika ( Africa )
dat. 1679, 57 x 90,5 "Extremely rare map of Africa! Betz, Mapping of Africa, Nr. 113. 2 (our copy, no further mentioned). Schilder, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica, Bd. 5, p. 199-207; not in Norwich, Maps of Africa; not in Tooley, Maps of Africa. - A reduction to two sheets of Willem Blaeu's 1608 wall map of Africa but with further and newer informations. Two sheets joined, very good impression, good and wide margins, two minor restorations in the map (wormholes), otherwise in perfect condition."

WITGEEST, Simon [= Willem GOEREE?].
[8], 512, [24] pp.Rare second edition of a very popular Dutch conjuring book, first published (also by Jan ten Hoorn in Amsterdam) in 1679. It went through many further editions, sometimes augmented, far into the 18th century. The edition of 1698 mentions 1600 magic tricks (tover-konsten), instead of the 500 in the present edition. It was also translated into German. “Simon Witgeest”, from Middelburg, is almost certainly a pseudonym. The family name does not appear in the www.wiewaswie.nl database until 1818. Witgeest literally means “white spirit” in Dutch, and it probably served to suggest that the recipes were innocent, “white” rather than black magic. Willem Goeree (1635-1711), a Dutch bookseller first in Middelburg and after 1677 in Amsterdam, noted above as one of the book's sources, is often named as the possible author, but his known publications, books on art theory and practices, and (Jewish) religion and history are aimed at more of a high-brow public. The author states in the preface that the book was meant to “shorten wintery nights” and gradually the sections on glass, drawing and etching were omitted in favor of more magic tricks, practical jokes, riddles, and entertainment with mathematical and astronomical brainteasers, as well as small chemical and physics experiments “for fun”.Binding slightly worn, otherwise in very good condition.l John Landwehr, “Simon Witgeest's Natuurlyk tover-boek et alia”, in: Volkskunde, 68 (1967), pp. 67-82; Hoogendoorn, p. 992, STCN (2 copies); for more about the text: www.dbnl.org/nieuws/nieuws.php?l=2020_01_09.

Durant-- J.
Coloured copper engraving assembled from two sheets by J. Durant after a drawing of Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, 1679. Plate size: 52 x 77 cm. The map occurs only in the first edition of Taverniers "Recueil de plusieurs relations". For later editions and/or translations the map was made smaller. It shows many unusual comments about Japan. It contains legends about the nature of the country, e.g. where gold is mined. Okasaki is said to have the most beautiful women. In Lake Biwa one can catch lots of salmon. Worthless youths are sent to an island off Kyushu, where they have to work etc. From a cartographic perspective the most important innovation is the inclusion of the route of the Dutch. At Firando it states that this where they had stayed initially. At Kisma "" a different name for Deshima "" it says that this is where the Dutch are. Also some Dutch ships are depicted. The map is handsomely framed using the highest standards (UV protective glass, acid free paper, wooden, i.e. strong and water resistant, reverse side).Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (1605 - 1689), was born in Paris, where his father Gabriel and uncle Melchior, protestants from Antwerp, pursued the profession of geographers and engravers. The conversations he heard in his father's house inspired Tavernier with an early desire to travel, and in his sixteenth year he had already visited England, the Low Countries and Germany. He was eager to visit the East; and he found the opportunity to join two French fathers, M. de Chapes and M. de St Liebau, who had received a mission to the Levant. In their company he reached … [Click Below for Full Description]

POLITI (Puliti), Alessandro. [Click Below for Full Description]

Se hai dubbi o domande, ti invitiamo a contattarci. Copia molto rara in Una rilegatura superba e rara con le Grandi Armi Reali (Luigi XIV) VALERIUS MAXIMUS I secolo d.C. [Click Below for Full Description]

Small folio (28 x 19.5 cm). With an engraved title-page and 24 numbered engravings on 7 folding leaves. Contemporary half sheepskin parchment. [12], 67, [1] pp. Very rare issue of the first and only edition of a treatise on fortification, written by an engineer in service of the Margrave of Brandenburg and printed in Stargard. This richly illustrated book was written as a critique on Dutch military architecture. Neubauer considered the Dutch manner of building fortifications, and particularly the work of Hendrick Ruse, the most important Dutch military architect of the first half of the 17th century, too costly and time-consuming. In the Discoursus he presents a type of architecture which he believed was more readily realized and more practical. Curiously, there are three issues of this edition, differing only in their dedications: to the city magistrates of Breslau, Danzig or, as in the present copy, Frankfurt am Main. With the sides somewhat worn; paper browned and tears in three of the folding plates and two other plates expertly repaired; engraved title-page shaved; a fair copy. [22], 82 pp. First edition of a very rare medical treatise by Ehrenfried Hagendorn (1640-1692), a Polish doctor and the personal physician of the Elector of Saxony. In the present Tractatus he introduced a new medical application for the popular exotic "terra Japonica" or catechu. Catechu (cachou, cutch etc.) is a substance widely used for all kinds of purposes throughout Asia today and in history. It is extracted mainly, but not exclusively, from the bark of acacia trees. Typically it comes as a reddish powder that dissolves in water. It has been used in Europe for centuries, most commonly as a dye or as an astringent. In Dutch "cachouën" (to cachou) means to boil something in catechu (cachou) in order to make it last longer. This was introduced by the VOC and especially used in the maintenance of ships, which eventually lead to the Dutch fleet turning reddish brown because of the dye in catechu. We traced the first European mention of catechu in a Wittenberg pharmacist's pricelist from 1632: Verzeichnüs und Taxa ... so in der Apotheken zu Wittenbergk verkaufft werden ... Wittenberg, Johann Röhner, 1646. From the 1670's onward publications appeared that aimed to introduce new purposes for the substance, including the present work by Hagendo … [Click Below for Full Description]

CIUCCI, Antonio Filippo
Giuseppe Piccini, 1679. [Click Below for Full Description]
