Mainwaring, Sir Thomas
1679. Interesting for Its Discussion of Early Common-Law Authorities on Marriage Mainwaring, Sir Thomas [1623-1689]. The Legitimacy Of Amicia, Daughter Of Hugh Cyveliok Earl Of Chester, Clearly Proved. With Full Answers to All Objections that Have at Any Time been Made Against the Same. London: Printed for Sam. Lowndes, 1679. [x], 171, [1] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary speckled calf, blind rules to boards, raised bands to spine, marbled edges. Moderate rubbing to extremities, boards beginning to separate, but secured by cords. Title page printed in red and black. Moderate toning to text, small piece excised from rear endleaf, internally clean. * Only edition. A sequel to the author's A Defence of Amicia. The 8-page preface gives a useful account of the endless pamphlet-war that following the publication of Defence in 1673, including an account of the controversy itself and the publications of Mainwaring's opponent, Peter Leicester. Amicia, the author's grandmother, was the wife of Ralph Mainwaring. Leicester, another descendant of Amicia, claimed that she was a bastard. This tract, like the others, is of legal interest for its discussion of the early common law authorities on marriage. Both authors had been students at Gray's Inn. The issue was eventually decided in Mainwaring's favor. OCLC locates 13 copies in North America, 1 in a law library (Ohio State). English Short-Title Catalogue R21678.

1679. Click here to view a short video presentation. Amerique Meridionale.(World map- Australia- Carpentaria- Van Diemens Land- New Zealand) Issued 1679, Paris by P. Du Val. Issued as part of a now very rare four-sheet wall map, this sheet offered alone. Any and all sheets are scarce in the market as are most folio sheet Duval maps of this era. Attractive, fascinating and rare 17th century folio sheet map, with original outline hand color. Of note for the depictions of a partial outline of a single New Zealand island as well as an entirely erroneous placement of Van Diemens island and Australia in relationship to NZ. Also note the huge long incomplete coastline east of NZ, which may represent a hypothetical Southern Continent which had been the source of speculation for years. This giant southern continent then continues east below the southern tip of So. America. As noted by Shirley, the map was issued separately and was engraved in such a way as allowing the top portion with title to be trimmed off so the sheets could all be joined. A full example is shown in Shirley's Mapping of the World, 489. Video captures the condition in detail, old paper repairs on reverse, some damp staining, spots of color offset, paper slightly soft along edges, blank margins trimmed down to at or slightly within neat lines, etc. Rare enough that allowances must be made for any example in any condition. Sheet measures c. 17 1/8" x 23". Printed area measures c. 16" x 22 1/4". Shirley, Mapping of the World, 489 (noting it was also published separately). This work is a quarto, with the signatures running as [A4], B4. ESTC citation number R218183. Collated from the ESTC, complete. An interesting letter discussing the persecution of Roman Catholics in England. The Church of England had taken over as the standard Church in England after the 1530s and Henry VIII's separation from the Roman church. After this, Catholics became persecuted within England. An example of fervent anti-Catholic attitude of England at this time was the fabrication of the Popish Plot by Titus Oates, which alleged that there was a solid and extensive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II. Oates is referenced to by the author of this treatise, mentioning Oates' plot as an example of the persecution against the Catholics. The author references the innocent men who were killed after suspicion that was thrown upon them by Titus Oates, with at least fifteen men being killed from 1678-1681 due to Oates. Athanasius Kircher was a 17th-century Jesuit scholar who published works on a wide variety of topics. He studied magnetism, geology, medicine, even Egyptian hieroglyphs. Perhaps, though, his most important contribution to the world of mathematics was his book 'Tariffa'. This work was one of the most important 17th-century treatises to cover arithmetic, geometry, and trigonometry and their influences and uses in music and navigation. This important work is filled with Pythagorean tables, or multiplication boards.

Gallonyé, Jean).
Lyon, Rolin Glaize, 1679. 12mo. 151, (1) pp. Contemporary French full calf with giltstamped title to prettily gilt spine. All edges sprinkled red. First Lyons edition. - Jean Gallonyé, from a village near Montpellier, was twenty when captured by Turkish pirates in October 1670 and twenty-four when ransomed. "He had hoped to reach Saint Christopher (now Saint Kitts), where sub-Saharan African slaves were already cultivating sugar cane [.] Gallonyé's account of brute labor, brutal punishment, and bravery through five masters and two failed escape attempts was a paean to his rescuers and a plea 'for true Christians to think occasionally about the infinite number of their brothers who still groan under the same chains and in the same prisons today'" (G. Weiss, Captives and Corsairs, p. 64). - This rare Lyonese edition appeared in the same year as that published by Michallet in Paris, with a different page count. It cannot be determined with certainty which is the original edition, but the present one, printed in Lyon, is incomparably rarer; OCLC shows only 2 copies in libraries internationally (BnF; University of Mannheim). A Dutch edition appeared in 1707. - Some browning throughout. Binding professionally repaired at extremeties, but overall a genuine copy in excellent condition. OCLC 664453603. Cf. Gay 1233. London: George Sawbridge at the Bible on Ludgate Hill, and Rich. Chiswel, Ben. Took, and Tho. Swabridge, Assigns of Thomas Williams, 1679. 1679 Richard Baker Chronicle of Kings of England BIZARRE Dragons Monsters WarsRichard Baker was a 16th-century English Protestant historian who is best known for his chronicle the royals of England. In 1643, Baker first published 'A Chronicle of the Kings of England' - a work that was met with considerable success. Going through a number of editions into the mid-18th-century, 'Chronicle', according to Brownley,"provides some useful measures of the changes in English historical narratives from the civil wars to the early 18th-century. Baker thus offers a base for perspectives on an era crucial not only for the development of English historical writing itself, but also for related developments in other genres that occurred partly in reaction to changes in the form and content of narrative histories."In other words, Baker's 'Chronicle' was a primary influence in the way historical narratives would be written from the 17th-century onward.Curiously, Baker decided to include a plethora of minor incidents that were not included in more high-profile histories. (per Brownley)· a feast when William I was attacked by mice who followed him until they ate him alive· Prince Eustace IV, son of Stephen, was upset at the monks of Abbey of Bury for denying him money, so he burned their cornfields - then promptly died by the wrath of God!· Accounts of floods, fires, frosts, and earthquakes during each reign· "a dragon of marvelous b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco Scoto
Italy: This is an EXTREMELY RARE 1679 Itinerario Overo D'Italia By Francesco Scoto with approximately 19 plates. It is more than 700 pages and appears to be complete but due to the delicate nature of this extremely old and rare piece, I did not go through this page by page. I put a picture of one of the plates into the listing, but wanted to be very gentle with the book. The cover appears to be covered in vellum and has some peeling as shown in the pictures. Here is some additional information I was able to find on this super rarity: Giacomo Cadorin in 1688 printed the last Paduan edition of the Itinerary of Italy by Francesco Scoto. Remaining in the Venetian ambit, Pietro Brigonci's competitors in Venice competed at these exits of Padua, recognizable by the square format of the antique prints with views of the city, therefore a little shorter than the Paduan tables. His first edition of the Itinerary of Italy by Francesco Scoto was in 1665 and had the text taken from the publication of Cadorin of 1659 which extended the story to Friuli, Sicily, Malta, Lazio and the Holy Land, then in the same year in a reprint also included tables on these territories. In 1670, 1673, 1676 and 1679 the other editions of the Brigonci, all Venetian, are placed, all with the unchanged title Itinerary, or new description of the main journeys of Italy [...] by Francesco Scoto , all enriched with just under forty prints ancient with city views. In the seventeenth century the great publishing hub, in addition to the Veneto area with Venice at the head, was represented by Rome and it is here that i … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Guillim
London: 1679. Covers loose, a few pages loose. "A Display of Heraldry", by John Guillim (1565-1621). This book was published in nine editions between 1610 and 1724, and each edition seems to have had variations. It is considered the master work on the subject of heraldry. This copy, rebound, is Edition Five, published in 1679, and dedicated to Charles II, King of England, during his lifetime. This book contains approximately 150 individually hand painted illustrations of the coats of arms of British nobility. Approximately 9" x 14" in size, weight of nearly 8 pounds. There is a bookplate from Castle Goring on the back of the front cover. A book of great rarity, in any edition, and an essential reference work for those interested in heraldry. It is also a reference work for those who collect Chinese and Japanese pottery and porcelain as heraldic symbols were frequently used, particularly on Chinese export items. Italie: 1679. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Paris, 1679. Broadside, 48 x 35.5 cm. Folded, large dampstain affecting top and bottom, else very good. This broadside is signed in print: "Saint Germain en Lay, 24 Oct. 1679.Colbert." One of the chronic problems faced by France was a shortage of shipping, which put the country at a disadvantage in dealing with the maritime powers of her neighbors, England and the Netherlands. To correct this, Colbert instructs (translated from the French): "In order to encourage his subjects in navigation and maritime commerce, the king decrees that anyone who builds a boat in the ports and harbors of the kingdom of more than 100 tons capacity will receive 100 sols per ton." There are instructions for the broadside to be posted at docks and mercantile exchanges so that no one can claim ignorance. Not in the NUC.
