Interior in very good condition with only very mild signs of foxing. Very rare contemporary binding of Thomas North's Plutarch. Sir Thomas North (1535?-1604) was an English justice of the peace, military officer and translator. His translation into English of Plutarch's Parallel Lives is notable for being a source text used by William Shakespeare for several of his plays. The first edition of his translation of Plutarch, from the French of Jacques Amyot, appeared in 1579. The first edition was dedicated to Queen Elizabeth, and was followed by another edition in 1595, containing fresh Lives. A third edition of his Plutarch was published, in 1603, with more translated Parallel Lives, and a supplement of other translated biographies. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica Eleventh Edition, "[i]t is almost impossible to overestimate the influence of North's vigorous English on contemporary writers, and some critics have called him the first master of English prose." The Lives translation formed the source from which Shakespeare drew the materials for his Julius Caesar, Coriolanus, and Antony and Cleopatra. It is in the last-named play that he follows the Lives most closely, whole speeches being taken directly from North.

Recherches sur les courbes a double courbure.Paris: Nyon, Didot and Quillau, 1731. First edition.

Fine large-paper copy of this celebrated treatise, "the first treatise on solid analytic geometry" (Boyer), written when the author was only sixteen. In it Clairaut demonstrates a claim made by Newton that all cubic curves in three dimensions are projections of a cubic curve of a special form. This publication led to Clairaut's election to the Académie des Sciences at the age of eighteen, the rules of admission being suspended to accommodate the mathematical prodigy.<br/><br/> "Alexis Claude Clairaut was one of the most precocious of mathematicians, outdoing even Blaise Pascal in this respect. At the age of ten he was reading the textbooks of L'Hospital on conics and the calculus, when he was thirteen he read a paper on geometry to the Académie des Sciences ... In the year of his election Clairaut published a celebrated treatise, <i>Recherches sur les courbes a double courbure</i>, the substance of which had been presented to the Académie two years earlier ... The treatise of Clairaut carried out for space curves the program that Descartes had suggested almost a century before - their study through projections on two coordinate planes. It was, in fact, this method that suggested the name given by Clairaut to gauche or twisted curves inasmuch as their curvature is determined by the curvatures of the two projections. In the <i>Recherches</i> numerous space curves are determined through intersections of various surfaces, distance formulas for two and three dimensions are given, an intercept form of the plane is included, and tangent lines to space curves are found. This book by the teenage Clairaut constitutes the first treatise on solid analytic geometry" (Boyer, <i>History of mathematics</i>, p. 494). <br/><br/> Isaac Newton was the first to investigate systematically third-order or cubic curves. His work on the subject, <i>Enumeratio linearum tertii ordinis</i>, was completed in 1676 but not published until 1704 (as an appendix to his <i>Opticks</i>). In it he claimed that all cubic curves could be obtained from those of the form <i>y2 = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d</i> by projecting between planes. In the present work Clairaut published a proof of Newton's assertion. Geometrically, Clairaut thought of a space curve as the intersection of two surfaces; and analytically the equation of each surface was expressed as an equation in three variables. Clairaut established Newton's claim by proving that every cubic curve is the intersection of a plane and a cubic cone defined by the equation zy2 = ax3 +bx2z + cxz2 + dz3. <br/><br/> "In his 1731 work ... Clairaut studied tangents to curves of double curvature. He saw that a space curve can have an infinity of normals located in a plane perpendicular to the tangent. The expressions for the arc length of a space curve and the quadrature of certain areas on surfaces are also due to him" (Kline, <i>Mathematical Thought from Ancient to Modern Times</i>, p. 557). <br/><br/> Parkinson p. 149.. 4to (257 x 194 mm), pp. [8], 119, [3], with six folding engraved plates, a beutiful copy on thick paper in fine French polished calf, entirely untouched, book plate and blind stamp of the Macclesfield library.         Livre Nouveau de Toutes Sortes d'Ouvarges D'Orfevries

1676. [MONCORNET, Balthazar]. Livre Nouveau de toutes sortes d'ouvrages d'Orfeuries receuillies des meilleurs ouvrieres de ce temps et se vendent chez Jean Moncornet. / Ein Newes Büchlein Von allerhant Goldtschmiderey... Illustrated with an engraved title-page followed by 11 engraved plates measuring 186 x 137 each mounted on stubs. Small 4to., bound in modern brown morocco in the style of a French eighteenth-century binding. [Paris]: Jean Moncornet, rue St. Jacques, [1679-95]. |~||~||~||~||~||~| An aesthetic, rare suite of early Rococo engravings depicting jewelry designs by the engraver Balthazar Moncornet (1600-1668) executed in the time of Louis XIV. The suite features bejeweled earrings, necklaces and broaches intertwined with floral borders made of cornucopias, wreaths, birds, swirling ribbons and other ornamental elements. Each design appears floating above engraved landscapes and cityscapes depicting Rome, Paris, Notre Dame, Saint Denis, and the gardens of the Château de Rueil. The final engraving features a portrait of Louis XIV within a jeweled frame, surrounded by a wreath over a view of Pont Neuf. A work of such unique charm that Bernard Quaritch saw fit to make facsimile edition published in 1888! The introduction to the facsimile describes the work as "An undescribed and apparently unknown series of 12 plates..." Bernard Moncornet came from a long line of Flemish artisans including his father, Pierre Moncornet, who moved the family to Paris at the request of Henry IV to work at the famed Gobelins tapestry manufacturer. He would later become a successful printer and engraver, as would his son Balthazar. The present work, which features Balthazar's designs, was published by his son, Jean Moncornet (1644-1716) who ran a print making shop on the rue St. Jacques from 1676 until its bankruptcy in 1695 (thus we assign the date). The publication history of this suite is complex. Berlin Katalog makes mention of a suite by Francois Lefebure and Balthazar Moncornet entitled Livre de Feuilles et de Fleurs Utile aux Orfeures... published in Paris in 1661 and reproduces plate 5 which appears in our copy (one might assume the rest of the plates are the same as well). It also notes that the first edition of this series was published in 1657. Guilmard lists the present title with the date 1665 and without mention of Jean Moncornet on the title-page. The Quaritch edition replicates our edition, erroneously noting that it is the first. In any case, no copies of the title mentioned in the Berlin Katalog are found on OCLC or at auction. One copy of the 1665 edition appears at Harvard. No copies of the present edition appear on ABPC. OCLC locates a copy at the NYPL, which we examined and found to have the title-page and three other engravings provided in facsimile. Very rare thus. Although trimmed and mounted the images are not effected and impressions are sharp. Guilmard, pg 54 No. 71. Berlin Katalog 818, 819.

Genf, Joh. Hermann Widerhold, 1676. &#150; Goldsmith 2167. Löffelholz, Gesch. d. Betriebswirtschaft, S. 227 ff. Weber, Literaturgeschichte der Handelsbetriebslehre, S. 12 ff. Sundhoff, Dreihundert Jahre Handelswissenschaft S. 30 ff. [Attributes: First Edition]

Genf, Joh. Hermann Widerhold, 1676.. . - Goldsmith 2167. Löffelholz, Gesch. d. Betriebswirtschaft, S. 227 ff.         ARXIERATIKON. Liber pontificalis Ecclesiae Graecae. Edited by Isaac Habert

Paris: 1676 (printed by Pierre Blaise in 1643). Folio (368 x 239 mm). [32], 749 [recte 753], [11] pp. Title printed in red & black with large woodcut printer?'s device. Text in two columns in Greek and Latin, commentary in single column. Woodcut initials throughout. Quires Eee-Ggg (pp. 597-632) misbound between quires Rr and Ss; light crease mark in some lower corners, faint marginal dampstaining at end. Contemporary French calf, spine gold-tooled, edges stained red (scuffed, edges rubbed, upper joint starting). Provenance: François Blouet de Camilly, with his armorial bookplate as bishop and inscription on the title; from the Macclesfield library (blindstamp on title and armorial bookplate, paper shelfmark labels on spine).*** A fine copy of the first printed Greek Orthodox pontifical. This is the second issue, with a new title added to the sheets of the 1643 edition. The Archieratikon is the book of Orthodox Catholic rites for service conducted by bishops (the Hieratikon was for priests). The extensive commentary was the work of the theologian and anti-Jansenist polemicist Isaac Habert (ca. 1600-1668), doctor of the theological faculty of the Sorbonne, prédicateur ordinaire du Roi, and, after 1645, Bishop of Vabres. This monumental work of erudition, ?"the results of his readings in the manuscript euchologies [prayer books] of the Bibliothèque Royale ... ensured him fame [and] is an essential source for the history of Greek liturgy?" (Scholasticon, online biographical dictionary of early modern European and American professors of theology and philosophy). Habert dedicated the work to Chancellor Séguier, one of France?'s greatest book collectors, whose collection of Greek manuscripts was unparalleled. The printer Pierre Blaise was the son of Séguier?'s librarian. This new issue was sponsored by the powerful publisher-bookseller Louis Billaine, libraire for the Benedictines, whose houses, especially at Saint-Maur and Saint Germain, were major centers of critical theological scholarship during the 17th and 18th centuries. The present copy belonged indeed to a bishop, though not of the Orthodox persuasion: François Blouet de Camilly (1664-1723), was Bishop and Comte de Toul, and later served briefly as archbishop of Tours from 1721 to 1723. His substantial library was dispersed at auction in 1726.

1676. 144113 ERASMUS, Desiderius. Morias Enkomion [Greek] Stultitiae laus. [80], 336, [12] pp. Illustrated with 81 copper-engraved plates after Holbein. 8vo., 183 x 110 mm, bound in full French eighteenth-century red morocco, triple ruled fillet border, intricate gilt-tooled spine, a.e.g. Basel: Genathianis, 1676. |~||~||~||~|$7500.00 The First Edition of this important Renaissance work to include Hans Holbein's illustrations, engraved by Caspar Merian, with numerous representations of classical figures described in the narrative, as well as portraits of Erasmus, Holbein the Elder, and Holbein the Younger. Presented as a series of allegories, this satirical, often sardonic treatise on Catholic dogma and the corruption rampant in the Roman Catholic Church is a reflection of Erasmus's own feeling of disillusionment with the Church following a visit to Rome. Ending simply with the author's interpretation of true Christian values, this volume, translated into English as In Praise of Folly, served as an impetus for the Protestant Reformation. Binding in excellent condition. A clean, bright copy overall, with a few sections of the text slightly yellowed. Graesse II, 495. Brunet II, 1037.

Still a very good copy of one of the rarest of Cornish maps. Although published in several editions, few of the maps still survive due to their ephemera nature. Batten & Bennett, 15. Quixley, 19, ' Within a year of the appearance of Ogilby's road maps in 1675, Robert Morden produced a pack of geographical playing-cards of the 52 counties of England and Wales, and these were the first county maps to show roads, though of course the limitations of size meant that only a diagrammatic version of the roads could be depicted.         Theologiae verè Christianae Apologia

12 p.l., 374, [24] pp., one leaf of errata. 4to, cont. English dark blue morocco (unimportant scuffing to extremities), covers panelled in gilt & blind, spine finely gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. Amsterdam: J. Claus & others, 1676. First edition, rare, and a splendid copy bound in contemporary English dark blue morocco, most probably for presentation, of the classic exposition of the Quaker philosophy. The Society of Friends, as Quakers are more formally known, has historically had an outsized influence through the mere force of passive resistance. Their form of Christianity is "widely divergent from the prevalent types, being a religious fellowship which has no formulated creed demanding definite subscription, and no liturgy, priesthood or outward sacrament, and which gives to women an equal place with men in church organization."-Encyc. Brit. The Quakers were also instrumental in the colonization of New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Following the foundation of the Society of Friends by George Fox in 1647, its adherents issued a large body of polemical pamphlets and tracts, most of negligible literary merit. The need to combat persecution caused Barclay (1648-90), a member of a notable Scottish family who had converted to Quakerism in 1666-67, to write a series of "books that became the definitive statement of the Quaker faith for upwards of two centuries."-ODNB. In 1675 he published his Theses Theologiae, a series of 15 propositions spelling out Quaker beliefs. The Apologia, which Barclay had printed in Amsterdam during a period of travel or voluntary exile, is a full and reasoned defense of each of the 15 theses set forth in the earlier work. This work has been reprinted many times and in many languages. Leslie Stephen described it in D.N.B. as "impressive in style; grave, logical, and often marked by the eloquence of lofty moral convictions...One of the most impressive theological writings of the century...[Barclay's] recognition of a divine light working in men of all creeds harmonises with the doctrine of toleration, which he advocates with great force and without the restrictions common in his time." This first edition was undoubtedly printed in a very small number. The present large, attractive copy appears to have been bound for presentation, and may have been one of the copies sent in February 1678 to each of the ambassadors at the peace congress of Nijmegen. Fine and handsome copy, preserved in a box. With the Princes of Starhemberg stamp (sale Cologne, 16 September 1956, lot 941). .

Insvlarvm Hispaniolae et Cvbae cum infulis circum jacentibus accurata delineatio

Amsterdam 1676 - First State. "This chart produced in a larger scale than usual, reflects the importance of its waters to Spain. It was through the 'Canaal van Bahama' that a large proportion of the gold and silver from the Americas passed" "The monoculture of the Florida peninsula matches, with the exception of five names at the southern tip. The most interesting feature is the reintroduction of a mountain range; this has not been seen on a map of the region since those of De Bry in the 1590's. After a brief period when the name Tegesta was applied, FLORIDA is used again."-Burden, Size : 410x525 (mm), 16.125x20.625 (Inches), Original Hand Coloring, 0

[Letter, signed, to an unknown recipient].Lunéville, 21 March 1738. Folded leaf (32 x 20.5 cm). In French. With 3 blind-stamped seals.

A letter signed by Élisabeth Charlotte d'Orléans, Duchess of Lorraine (1676-1744), discussing her youngest daughter Anne Charlotte's election as Abbess of Remiremont (Vosges, France). Apparently the Duchess had recommended her daughter for the title of Abbess in a previous letter. Anne Charlotte, though, had not yet reached the required age of 30, and had not been a Canoness for at least six weeks. In the current letter her mother applies for exemption from these articles. The Duchess did not write in vain: stepping into the footsteps of her older sister Élisabeth Charlotte, Anne Charlotte was elected Abbess on 10 May 1738.In fine condition.

A Map of Virginia and Maryland.

London 1676 - Fine hand color; wear to bottom of centerfold, else fine condition. A very attractive, near-mint example. Speed's handsomely engraved work is one of the earliest English maps of the area and one of the first to demarcate the borders of colonial Virginia and Maryland. Just three years before the publication of Speed¿s map, Augustine Herrman had conducted the first thorough surveys of Maryland at the behest of Lord Baltimore. Speed¿s was one of the first maps to adopt this groundbreaking cartography. However, in general outline Speed still followed the prototype of Captain John Smith, who conducted the first European survey of Chesapeake Bay. Speed's map "is the last major derivative of the Smith map, and it is unique as an example of the transition from one basic prototype map to another. The delineation of the land area follows Smith while the toponymic prototype was the Herrman map of 1673." (Verner in Tooley, Mapping of America, p.170) A particularly important feature derived from Herrman by Speed is the boundary line (indicated by a double row of trees) between Virginia and Maryland on the Eastern Shore. English text on the verso contains extensive descriptions of Virginia and Maryland.
