Theodosius Schoepffer
Lipsiae [Leipzig]: Theodor Philipp Calvisius. Shoepffer's TRACTATUM DE BRAXANDI 1677 Reinheitsgebot German Beer Legal Treatise Shoepffer's TRACTATUM DE BRAXANDI 1677 Reinheitsgebot German Beer Legal Treatise POB#44503 TITLE: Tractatum succinctum de Braxandi eidemque annexis iuribus, pluribus in foro frequentibus AUTHOR: Theodosius Schoepffer PUBLISHER: Francofurti; Lipsiae [Leipzig]: Calvisius, Theodor Philipp, printer. DATE: 1677 DESCRIPTION: [12], 340 pages [This work only. There are two works in one volume] CONDITION NOTES: VERY GOOD. Solid period vellum binding with darkened spine and uneven toning to the covers. Tight page attachment, and pleasantly toned pages with a few small corner and edge creases mostly in the binder blanks. Edges of the cover are nibbled with tiny loses. BINDING: Full period vellum. Inscribed titles on spine, also "Tom K" possibly indicating a user's library set. . Tractatum Succinctum de Braxandi concerns the European laws of brewing beer, compiled by Theodore Schoepffer, a busy compiler of legal texts with many works to his credit. Of interest to beer historians, Tractatum Succinctum de Braxandi predates unified Germany's Reinheitsgebot by nearly two centuries [it's discussed in Shoepffer as a significant Bavarian regulation, but many other principalities had their own laws in 1670s]. Shoepffer's Tractum surveys a variegated patchwork of official recipes, edicts, and guild restrictions illuminating local beer production customs throughout Central Europe. Prior to the introduction of industrial yeast and national production regulations in the 19 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hale, Sir Matthew
1677. First Edition. London, Printed by William Godbid, for William Shrowsbery [sic] [Shrewsbury] at the Sign of the Bible in Duke-Lane, 1677. Large Quarto. Frontispiece-portrait (original copper-engraving) of Sir Matthew Hale by dutch print artist Frederick Hendrik Van Hove, [10], 380 pages. All edges painted red (contemporary 17th century speckled red). Hardcover / Splendid recent half-leather with new spinelabel and marbled-paper-covered-boards. Original endpapers and original pastedown with original bookplate/Exlibris of Richard Meade (Ballymartle). Very interesting, contemporary annotations in ink to nearly every paragraph of the pages 1 - 47. The annotations closely cropped with some frequent text-loss to the annotations only (text-loss ranges from only a few letters to full words along each page but the meaning is still conceivable). The extensive annotations reflect not only on Descartes supposition on Epicurus "what colour of evidence have we of the various Configurations of his Atomes", but also the chapter in which Hale is "Touching the Excellency of the Humane Nature in general" is commented in sections in which the sense of Vegetables is elaborated on as is on the senses: Touching, Smelling, Tasting, Hearing, Seeing. All annotations wonderfully speculative and in a very readable hand. Name of preowner written in ink on titlepage: "Jon. Falkner" [Jonathan Falkner or John Falkner]. Excellent condition after this work was recently beautifully restored by an english master-bookbindery. Joachim von SANDRART (Francoforte 1606 - Norimberga 1688)
Rara. Great city plan printed on two royal sheets, copy of the plan realized by Giovan Battista Falda in 1667 for the Pope Alessandro VII. Sandrart's plan faithfully copies the one realized by Falda; the main changes are in the cartouches, with a German text, and in the dedication to Pope Innocezo XI. T he cartouche on the right depicts the coat-of-arm of the Rioni, while on lower centre there are small views of the seven Jubilee Churche. Sandrart carved this plan together with Johannes Meyer; the result is a far more refained work compared to that of Falda, carved by Lhuiler. Etching, with margins, in excellent condition. Rare. Huelsen p. 9172. A; A. P. Frutaz, "Le piante di Roma", CLVI ; TIB p. 317, 281 C1. C. Marigliani, "Le Piante di Roma delle collezioni private", tav. 126.

Peter Heylin, aka Heylin
London: P. Chetwind, & A. Seile, 1677. Rebound skilfully with new spine, but retaining original heavy leather front and back boards, and the endpapers. The boards are worn, scored and marked as seen in the photos, but well worth retaining with original blind tooling visible. Old (1760 & 1895) name inscriptions on front free endpaper. The text I believe to be complete, although the pagination is a little unreliable (see full description). All pages browned and a little foxed as one would expect, but generally in a good condition. Occasional old annotations in ink (see photo). Small repairs to early pages, using Japanese tissue, but only as support. Page 393 in Book II has a tear, otherwise pages in a good condition. The maps are generally in a good condition. Europe with possibly a little loss at the very bottom, the other 3 all with small fold-downs at the bottom but all present (most with old backing repairs). All in all, a good copy, complete and holding together very well in its rebound state. "Cosmographiy in Four Books. 1677. Carta nautica dell'Europa occidentale, con le coste dell'oceano Atlantico. Seconda edizione con data 1677. Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva dei contorni, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Very handsome chart by a famous 18th century cartographer, Pierre Du Val (1618-1683) shows the North Atlantic Ocean and the coast of western Europe from Scandinavia and Great Britain down to North Africa. The chart depicts all harbors around the coastlines with no inland detail. The chart includes a rare reference to the Kimmen Line, which indicates a depth of 100 fathoms from Denmark to just west of the Shetland Isles, north of Scotland. Two compass roses with radiating rhumb lines fill the ocean and the Mediterranean. The decorative title cartouche is ornamented with two fighting ships and is topped with a figurehead and scrolls. Copperplate with original outline colour, very good condition.

"Map taken from ""Mercurio Geografico, a collection of maps published in Rome between 1660 and 1730 from the printing de Rossi. Over the years, the atlas was enriched by a growing number of cards. Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi's map of North America is based on the work of French cartographer, Guillaume Sanson, and his map of 1669. De Rossi also includes a dominant island California as Sanson had done. The map was published in De Rossi's ""Mercurio Geografico"" - this example is the first state of the map dated 1677 (later states appeared in 1687 and c.1715). As well as the island form given to California, De Rossi also shows an interesting delineation of five Great Lakes with the western parts still undefined in this state. Florida is shown in a rather ""squat"" form yet coastal detail further north, including the Chesapeake, Cape Cod and so on, is very much recognisable. Descartes, Rene; Louis de la Forge
Michel Bobin & Nicolas Le Gras, 1677. Second French edition, revised and corrected; first appeared in French in 1664, the Latin edition in 1662. 4to, contemporary calf, gilt spine, (64) 511 (10) pp., illustrated with over 80 in-text woodcuts. Contain's 'L'Homme' by Descartes including his work on the formation of the foetus, long remarks by de la Forge, and Descartes' treatise on light, here much revised. Apparently Descartes decided against the publication of 'L'Homme' as too heretical, in light of the recent arrest of Galileo, and it lay among his papers until its posthumous publication in 1662, but the original Latin edition is considered markedly inferior to the French. Very good, light wear to edges and corners of boards, 1707 armorial bookplate of Bidault, text bright and clean. Garrison Morton 574 for the Latin edition: "Descartes considred the human body a material machine, directed by a rational soul located in the pineal body. This book was the irst attempt to cover the whole field of 'animal physiology.' The work is really a physiological appendix to his Discourse on Method, 1637." Very Good.

MALEBRANCHE, Nicolas
Paris: André Pralard, 1677. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive." - Nicolas Malebranche A rare edition of Malebranche's principal and most important work - "Concerning the Search after Truth". This book would lay the foundation for all of Malebranche's philosophical ideas and reputation. He primarily focused on human error and the existence of God within human nature. This edition also includes his "Laws of Communication" and his responses to Regis. This work was written with the sole purpose of generalizing, clarifying, and commenting on God's miracles and actions toward man. The book was eventually placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1690 after disputes over its contents couldn't be settled. John Locke is known to have described Malebranche as "an acute and ingenious author" but obviously, not everyone saw his work in such light.

Pierre DUVAL (1618 - 1683)
