Baruch Spinoza
Amsterdam: 1677. Anniroc Rare Books ________ Engraved Portrait of Spinoza, bound with Opera Posthuma Amsterdam, circa 1677 Quarto. (40), 614, (34), 112, (8) pp. Bound with the original free end-papers in well-executed 20th century quarter calf and marbled boards, with four raised bands, gilt title-label and gilt ornaments to spine. Textblock edges a bit browned. Copper engraved portrait of Spinoza(after leaf 20). Overall Near Fine. The portrait is somewhat browned and has a tiny repair to the lower outer corner of the blank margin, and a small tape repair on the verso of the upper right corner - neither affecting the plate. A dynamic image of the iconic philosopher and a tremendous scarcity. Provenance: Ownership inscription on title page of Samuel Parr(1747-1825), an influential English literary figure who was widely involved in intellectual and political life. According to a handwritten note to front paste down, the book was bound by A.N.L. Munby(1913-1974). He worked in the rare book trade at Quaritch and Sotheby's before becoming Librarian at King's College, Cambridge in 1947. Opera Posthuma(1677) features the first printing of Ethics - Spinoza's critique of the traditional philosophical conceptions of God, humanity and the universe, and of the religions and the theological and moral beliefs grounded thereupon - the first systematic exposition of Pantheism. The book received venomous reviews: "A book which...surpasses all others in godlessness and which endeavors to do away with all religion and set godlessness on the throne." The portrait displays the dates of Spinoza' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peter I, the Great, Czar of Russia (1672-1725).
No place or date, 1677. 4to. 1 page (18 lines). Curious list of planetary and astrological (zodiac) symbols, all annotated in Russian and signed by Czar Peter the Great, who may have been introduced to astrology and alchemy by his chief physician, the state councillor Robert Erskine (1677-1718), known for his Paracelsian leanings. "The extent of Erskine’s absorption in alchemical questions is demonstrated in a flurry of letters he received in August and September 1717 from Johannes de Wilde, a self-styled 'Philochimicus' in Amsterdam. De Wilde provides plentiful evidence of Erskine’s embrace of iatrochemistry. On August 10, 1717, for example, de Wilde wrote that 'I have received by report that Your Excellency regards Arcana Medico-Chimica as of great value.' The 'philochimicus' then seeks to promote his alchemical adeptness by providing Erskine with a recipe for potable gold ('aurum potabile'). Rather than dismiss de Wilde as a charlatan, Erskine actually proposed to take him into service in St. Petersburg. According to de Wilde, the only reason he did not accept the offer was due to his suffering from 'fluxum haemorrhoidum'. Interestingly, de Wilde promoted his alchemical services in a variety of ways, ranging from offering to produce Johannes Baptista van Helmont’s 'aurum horizontale', to bolstering the Tsar’s treasury with gold and silver and to providing a 'delightful scent' of an 'aqua rosa' for Catherine, Peter’s wife" (R. Collis, Introduction to: A Curious Tsar. Peter the Great and Discovering Nature’s Secrets in Amsterdam. Exhibition catalogue, 2013). - A few paper … [Click Below for Full Description]

OUGHTRED, William
Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, 1677. First edition, very rare, of Oughtred's 'Opuscula', a collection of nine treatises gathered together and published poathumously his pupil Sir Charles Scarburgh. Oughtred (1574-1660) was one of the most important and influential mathematicians of the first half of the seventeenth century and was much admired by Newton, who described him as "a man whose judgment (if any man's) may be safely relied upon" (Correspondence III, 364). "Oughtred exercised a formative influence on a host of young men with a mathematical bent, alike at the university level and at the instrument maker's bench" (Taylor, Practitioners, p. 192), notably including Christopher Wren, John Wallis, Seth Ward, Jonas Moore and Charles Scarburgh. The tracts included are: Institutiones mechanicae; De variis corporum generibus gravitate et magnitudine comparatis; Automata; Questiones Diophanti Alexandrini, libri tres; De triangulis planis rectangulis; De divisione superficierum; Musicae elementa; De propugnaculorum munitionibus; and Sectiones angulares. Oughtred's 'Opuscula' is here bound with the third edition of his 'Clavis mathematicae' (Oxford: Lichfield, 1652), the first to be edited by Wallis, and by the second edition of his 'Circles of proportion' (Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, 1677). The 'Clavis' was first published as 'Arithmeticae in numeris' in 1631 and contained all that was then known in arithmetic and algebra. It was there that Oughtred introduced the signs x for multiplication and :: for proportion. The second part, 'De aequationum affectarum resolution in numeris,' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vechtstreek antieke kaart - Petrus Schenk, c. 1720

PLOT, ROBERT.
Printed at the Theatre,Oxford.1677,Folio,old diced panelled calf gilt, rebacked, with engraved title, folding engraved map, and 16 engraved plates. First Edition, born in Borden, Kent, England, 1640 and died December 13 - Borden, 1696 April 30,Plot was a British naturalist, Professor of Chemistry at Oxford University and the first keeper of the Ashmolean Museum. He is known for looking for natural curiosities in several English counties, writing Natural History of Oxfordshire in which he described the fossilised femur of a giant (now known to be from the dinosaur Megalosaurus) and Natural History of Staffordshire, in which he describes a double sunset. In 1677 he became a fellow of the Royal Society due to his exhibit of minerals, and in 1682 became the society's Secretary and joint editor of the Philosophical Transactions. In the field of chemistry he searched for a universal solvent that could be obtained from wine spirits, and believed alchemy was necessary for medicine. After 1686 Robert Plot focused more on archaeology, but misinterpreted Roman remains as Saxon. He stressed the unusual, studied echoes to learn about air, mineral waters, and recognised types of earth in layers, but believed fossil shellfish were coincidental mineral crystallisations, and that some spring water must originate from the sea flowing through underground channels. His account is an important source for the events leading to the peace. A Swedish translation "En engelsk diplomat om politiken i Norden under åren 1658-1659" was published by A. Hjelmerus in 1899. The appendix "A view of the Suedish and other affairs ..." (p.153-178) has a separate titlepage. DATE: 1677 DESCRIPTION: [12], 340 pages [This work only. There are two works in one volume] CONDITION NOTES: VERY GOOD. Inscribed titles on spine, also "Tom K" possibly indicating a user's library set. . Tractatum Succinctum de Braxandi concerns the European laws of brewing beer, compiled by Theodore Schoepffer, a busy compiler of legal texts with many works to his credit. Of interest to beer historians, Tractatum Succinctum de Braxandi predates unified Germany's Reinheitsgebot by nearly two centuries [it's discussed in Shoepffer as a significant Bavarian regulation, but many other principalities had their own laws in 1670s]. Shoepffer's Tractum surveys a variegated patchwork of official recipes, edicts, and guild restrictions illuminating local beer production customs throughout Central Europe. This edition of Heylyn's Cosmographie is noted for its final section which pokes fun at the satirical voyages and discoveries described in other similar works but is in itself an early reference to Australia and the Great Southern Continent. The separate title to this section reads: "An Appendix to the Former Work, Endeavouring a Discovery of the Unknown Parts of the World. Especially of Terra Australis Incognita, or the Southern Continent." First published in 1652, eight editions of the work appeared before 1700 attesting to its influence and importance. This copy stated on the engraved title as the fifth edition. Wing H1698A; Sabin 31655; ESTC R177978.

*** [English translation available upon request. Baruch Spinoza
Jan Rieuwertsz, 1677. Quarto. ** The portrait is somewhat browned and has a tiny repair to the lower outer corner of the blank margin, and a small tape repair on the verso of the upper right corner – neither affecting the plate. A dynamic image of the iconic philosopher and a tremendous scarcity. ** Provenance: Ownership inscription on title page of Samuel Parr(1747-1825), an influential English literary figure who was widely involved in intellectual and political life. ** According to a handwritten note to front paste down, the book was bound by A.N.L. Munby(1913-1974). He worked in the rare book trade at Quaritch and Sotheby's before becoming Librarian at King's College, Cambridge in 1947. ***** Opera Posthuma(1677) features the first printing of Ethics - Spinoza’s critique of the traditional philosophical conceptions of God, humanity and the universe, and of the religions and the theological and moral beliefs grounded thereupon – the first systematic exposition of Pantheism. The book received venomous reviews: “A book which surpasses all others in godlessness and which endeavors to do away with all religion and set godlessness on the throne.” ** The portrait displays the dates of Spinoza's birth and death(born:11/24/1632, Amsterdam - died: 2/21/1677, The Hague). Robert Thoroton
London: Henry Mortlock, 1677. A beautiful original example of this first edition, superb patina and almost certainly the best currently available for sale anywhere and at under 50% of the cost of some inferior copies advertised on the internet. You can Google 'Robert Thoroton, Antiquities of Nottinghamshire' to get the full details about the book and so I won't list them here. I bought this copy around 25 years ago at an auction at a fine art sale at Neales of Nottingham (formerly on Mansfield Road but no longer in existence). It could well have been in the Nottingham area since first published in 1677, during the reign of Charles II. The contents of this copy are in excellent condition and I suspect have never been read as all of the pages and plates are fresh, free from stains, repairs or any other damage. There is the odd very tiny occasional rust spot but this doesn't affect more than one letter in any single place. The spine was replaced shortly after I bought the book as it was badly cracked; a professional bookbinder (name available to the buyer) carried out the restoration and retained as much as possible of the original boards.
