Paris: Chez Theodore Girard, 1677 Illustrated with intext woodcuts. Second edition. Bound in full contemporary dark brown calf, with five raised bands to the spine, lettered and decorated in gilt, board edges decorated in gilt, all edges speckled red. A good copy, with some loss to the calf on the rear board, resewn endbands, some paper reinforcement to the inner hinges, minor splitting to the front outer hinge, rubbing to the spine, light scratching to the boards, minor gouge to the rear free endpaper, ink stain to the rear pastedown, a few faint creases and spots to the otherwise clean pages. The second French edition of Descartes' seminal treaties on physiology and natural philosophy. Originally written as physiological appendix to his Discourse on Method, both the Treatise on Man and Treatise on Light were originally intended to be paired with a third segment - the Treatise on Soul - under the collected title The World. Notably, Descartes did not publish these treatises during his lifetime, lest he suffer the fate of Galileo and be persecuted for his research; the first editions were published over a decade after his death. Treatise on Man was first published in Latin as De homine in 1662 and then in French as Traité de l'homme in 1664. Treatise on Light was published in part in Latin in the textbook Principia philosophiae in 1644 and in entirety in French as Le monde de Mr. Descartes ou la Traité de la Lumière in 1664. This is the second French edition for both treatises. Both the Treatise on Light and the Treatise on Man are notable for their descriptions of natural processes as scientific, if not mechanical, functions. Treatise on Man, which focuses on the human body, is the summation of Descartes' fascination with the internal functions. An influential text in the fields of science, medicine and philosophy, it is renowned for Descartes early observations on blood circulation, muscle reflex, the pineal gland, and human cognition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Amsterdam, Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1677. 4to. With etched frontispiece and 6 etched folding plates by Romeyn de Hooghe. 19th-century boards.

      - Adelung II, pp. 359-360; Landwehr, De Hooghe Book Illustrator 46; Muller, Bibl. Neerlando-Russe 200; Tiele, Bibl. 602; Verkruijsse, Romeyn de Hooghe 1677.04. First edition of a valuable account detailing a Dutch embassy to Russia (1675-1676). The objective was to gain Russian participation in the anti-Swedish and anti-French alliance, and Koenraad Klenk, with his expert knowledge of Russian language and culture, was the ideal choice to lead the embassy. The mission was subsidized with more than 50,000 guilders, an extraordinary amount which was even exceeded during the journey. Although the embassy was well received and the Russians were showered with gifts, Klenk failed to persuade the Tsar to enter into war with Sweden. The six impressively evocative plates by Romeyn de Hooghe are typical examples of his rich allegorical imagery. Final leaves restored, with the missing text supplied in manuscrip, some soling, binding worn. An excellent source for the history of Russia and its foreign relations during the reign of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich. [Attributes: First Edition]

         Opera Posthuma.

[Jan Rieuwertsz], [Amsterdam] 1677 - 4to (205 x 160 mm). [40], 614, [32]; [2], 112, [8] pp. Roman, italic and Hebrew type, woodcut device on title, several woodcut text illustrations, content and errata leaves at end. Without the frontispiece portrait as usual. Contemporary stiff vellum, title in manuscript to spine, boards ruled in blind and with blind-stamped central arabesque (spine a bit browned, vellum partly chipped at spine, corners little bumped, tailbands loose), sprinkled edges. Internally quite fresh and clean with only minor browning. ---- Van der Linde 22; PMM 153 (note). FIRST EDITION of Spinoza's posthumous works, including his influential Ethica, more geometrico demonstrata, the work which established Spinoza's reputation as a rationalist and "atheist." It is considered the first systematic exposition of pantheism in which God is identified with the entire universe. With the 'geometric method' Spinoza sought to apply mathematical reasoning to metaphysics. This led to the identification of God with the universe, which came to be viewed as a rational philosophy proclaiming the divinity of nature. The concept was embraced by various German Enlightenment interpreters (Lessing, Jacobi, Herder and Goethe) who, however, rejected Spinoza's method. Spinoza's correspondence among the posthumous works is particularly interesting, providing easier access to his philosophy, as well as dealing with optics, the telescope, and his views on Descartes. The least controversial of his writings, a simple Hebrew grammar composed at the request of friends, may have inspired scriptural studies among a wider audience than his metaphysical readership. The work was banned in Holland in 1678 and placed on the Index in 1679.- Visit our website for more information and additional images. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1677 State of Innocence John Dryden Fall of Man John Milton Paradise Lost RARE

[London : printed by T[homas]. N[ewcomb]. for H. Herringman, at the Anchor in the lower walk of the New Exchange, 1677.] Second edition. - 1677 State of Innocence John Dryden Fall of Man John Milton Paradise Lost RARE “Kindness for man, and pity for his fate, May mix with bliss and yet not violate. Their Heavenly harps a lower strain began And in soft music, mourned the fall of man!” – John Dryden, State of Innocence, A rare second edition of John Dryden’s adaption of John Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” Dryden intended for it to be performed with music, however, only this, the libretto, was ever produced. This rare 17th-century printing is complete with scene direction and staging, presumably Dryden’s own notes and vision of the scenes. The scene direction that was required was deemed too expensive and demanding for either the King’s Company theatre or the Royal Theatre on Drury Lane, and thus never appeared on stage. This work is unique in that John Milton omitted a dedication (whether intentionally or inadvertently is unknown). The responsibility fell to John Dryden, a friend of Milton’s, whose title page reads “The State of Innocence, And Fall of Man” – the title of Dryden’s play. This book is textually complete in all regards. Collation and signatures of this printing meet that of the 1677 edition collation. (Hoe II, 106).          1677 Pierre Aubusson Siege of Rhodes Knights Hospitaller Ottoman Sultans Turkey

      S. Mabre-Cramoisy: Paris, 1677. - 1677 Pierre Aubusson Siege of Rhodes Knights Hospitaller Ottoman Sultans Turkey A history of the Knights Hospitaller, The Siege of Rhodes, and Ottoman Sultans! Many Dominique Bouhours works went through several edits and criticized editions. While a large number of the works are well respected, others are considered to be less than authoritative. This work, ‘The History of Pierre d’Aubusson,’ is one of those works. This book loosely follows the story of his youth. However, what the work does provide is an adequate portrayal of the Knights Hospitaller and the 15th-century Ottoman Empire. The majority of the work, however, focuses on the Siege of Rhodes in 1480, where the Ottoman invasion of Rhodes was thwarted by d’Aubusson, Grand Master and portions of the French army. In 1480, d’Aubusson was awarded the title ‘Defender of Christendom’ for his defeat of Mahomet II’s army. This work is a rare work on the history of Turkey, Ottoman viziers and sultans, Rhodes, and the religious battles between Islamic states and Jesuit/Catholic Europe. Illustrations by Gantrel and Cassin include: • City plan of Rhodes Item number: #655 Price: $599 BOUHOURS, Dominique Histoire de Pierre d'Aubusson, Grand-Maitre de Rhodes. S.          L'America Settentrionale

Map taken from "Mercurio Geografico, a collection of maps published in Rome between 1660 and 1730 from the printing de Rossi. Over the years, the atlas was enriched by a growing number of cards. Giovanni Giacomo De Rossi's map of North America is based on the work of French cartographer, Guillaume Sanson, and his map of 1669. De Rossi also includes a dominant island California as Sanson had done. The map was published in De Rossi's "Mercurio Geografico" - this example is the first state of the map dated 1677 (later states appeared in 1687 and c.1715). As well as the island form given to California, De Rossi also shows an interesting delineation of five Great Lakes with the western parts still undefined in this state. Florida is shown in a rather "squat" form yet coastal detail further north, including the Chesapeake, Cape Cod and so on, is very much recognisable. According to Burden, it is not known whether De Rossi's work had Sanson's permission or whether it was direct plagiarism - either way, Sanson is credited in the decorative title cartouche at upper right. A good example of Italian cartography and the Europe-wide thirst for knowledge of the New World. Copper engraving, coloring contemporary contours in excellent condition. P. D. (20), 1-184, 195-258; (2), 259- 264, 1-214, (2 blank); (6), 1-97, (1 blank), (8), 107-119, (3) pp. 2 engraved frontispieces, 21 engraved plates (of 22, lacks 1 plate), some engravings in text. Contemporary brown full leather. Bookplate of D. G. Mackenzie. First English edition, translated by John Phillips: an account of Tavernier’s travels to Turkey, Persia, India. The Persian Travels are of particular interest, as they contain an account of Tavernier’s voyage through the Arabian Gulf, mentioning Bahrain, Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Hormuz and making observations on the pearl-fishing, people and navigation of the Gulf. A separate, illustrated chapter discusses extensively the invaluable pearl in the collection of the Imam of Muscat. As a French gem merchant he visited the mines in India and amassed a large collection of diamonds and jewels, and is best known for the discovery/purchase of the 112 carat Tavernier Blue Diamond that he subsequently sold to Louis XIV of France in 1668. This Diamond later was stolen during the French Revolution and was cut down to what is now known as the Hope Diamond.          Recentis Romae Ichonographia .

Rara. Great city plan printed on two royal sheets, copy of the plan realized by Giovan Battista Falda in 1667 for the Pope Alessandro VII. Sandrart’s plan faithfully copies the one realized by Falda; the main changes are in the cartouches, with a German text, and in the dedication to Pope Innocezo XI. T he cartouche on the right depicts the coat-of-arm of the Rioni, while on lower centre there are small views of the seven Jubilee Churche. Sandrart carved this plan together with Johannes Meyer; the result is a far more refained work compared to that of Falda, carved by Lhuiler. Etching, with margins, in excellent condition. Rare.

An influential text in the fields of science, medicine and philosophy, it is renowned for Descartes early observations on blood circulation, muscle reflex, the pineal gland, and human cognition.          In Quator INSTITUTIONUM IMPERALIUM JUSTINIANI, Commentarii [Commentaries upon the Institutes (Codex) of Justinian]

Georgii Andreae Dolhopffii, Strasburg and Frankfurt 1677 - Thick 4to, Johann Schneidewein (1519-1568) was a German jurist. At the age of eleven, he entered the University of Wittenberg and became acquainted with Martin Luther, when he was a boarder at his house in 1544. At first, Scheidewein studied what we would now describe as the "liberal arts". He then turned his attention to the study of law and was granted the degree of licentiate in 1545 (some accounts say 1544). For the next four years he taught and, in 1551, was granted a professorhip in law at the university. In the years prior to his death, he was often consulted on legal matters of state, and several times took part in deputations to the imperial court at Speyer. He died in Wittenberg in 1568, and his tomb at the Castle Church in that city is close to Luther's. His main work was his Commentaries on Justinian, which were edited by Matthias Wesenbeck and first published in 1573. Our copy is a ninth edition and is bound in vellum with yapped edges and a leather spine in compartments, and bears the copperplate engraved frontispiece of Schneidewein. Pagination: [blank], [frontis.], [3], [Appendix, 8], 1-1904 (double-columned; two page numbers to a page). Index [94]. The vellum shows wear and some soiling. It appears that the joints were at some time in the past repaired, with glue residue showing on boards. Spine leather chipped, and joints beginning to crack at spine ends. Front hinge neatly repaired. Contents tight, with some marginal wear to preliminary pages, else clean with only some very light foxing. Overall, a good plus copy of an important early legal and philosophical text. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), P2585. Madan 3130. Lowndes ("An admnirable work.) 1886. ESTC Citation No. R473650. Near Fine Four issues of the first edition are known, with no priority established (In our issue the author's name is given in full and at foot of title page appears: "The price in sheets at the press, nine shillings. To subscribers, eight shillings."). It was posthumously reprinted in a revised and enlarged second edition in 1705 with a life of Plot by his stepson John Burman. Plot, English naturalist, first Professor of Chemistry at the University of Oxford, and first keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, is best known for this treatise "singular medley of natural philosophy, palaelogy, and the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms from man downward," (Madan) followed by the Natural History of Staffordshire, published in 1686. The first work was filled with descriptions and illustrations of a wide range of specimens, and had immediate and far reaching influence. Plates are of flora and fauna, rocks and minerals, and some seventy species of fossils from the Jurassic and Cretaceous, including the first known illustration of a dinosaur bone (actually, the knee-end of the thigh bone, which Plot mistakenly thought had come from an elephant taken to Britain in Roman times). Throughout, in his choices of specimens and antiquities to present, Plot seems always to stress the anomalous. Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757), whose copy this was (or perhaps that of one of his immediate descendants) built the house and lived at Orwell Park, at Nacton in Suffolk, between 1725 and 1757. Vernon was famous for sea campaigns against the French and Spanish, with George Washington's half-brother, Lawrence Washington, serving aboard Vernon's flagship as Captain of the Marines in 1741. Washington later named the town of Mount Vernon in Virginia after the Admiral. Following Vernon's death, on 30 October 1757, his cousin, Francis Vernon (1715-1783), rebuilt the house, adding an extensive deer park. He also bought the title of Viscount Orwell, as a result of which the lands became known as Orwell Deer Park, and later simply Orwell Park. N. B.
