HEYLYN, Peter
London: Printed by A.C. for P. Chetwind, and A. Seile.., 1677. Neat repair to foot of one map.. Folio, printed title in red and black, with an additional engraved title and four folding maps; contemporary dark sprinkled calf. A famous geographical work by the seventeenth-century theologian and historian, here in one of the few editions that includes Heylyn's remarkable study of notions of the southern continent. His interesting, rare, and early discussion of the subject draws on the reasonable as well as the wildly imaginary in bringing together actual discoveries and utopian fiction: as far as the reasonable part goes, this ranks as one of the earlier descriptions of an Australian geographical identity though it quickly segues into fantasy. aptly demonstrating an easy confusion between the two that characterised popular ideas of exotic geography during the period. This important section was not present in the earliest editions of this book, nor in all later versions, but is found here in this fifth edition of the work, with a separate title-page ("An Appendix to the Former Work, Endeavouring a Discovery of the unknown Parts of the World: especially of Terra Australis Incognita, or the Southern Continent"). This bizarre and surprisingly unnoticed text on the southern continent begins: 'And here we are upon a new and strange Adventure, which no Knight Errant ever undertook before...'. Heylyn continues by discussing "Terra Australis Incognita", which he deduces (on the counterpoise theory) to be as large as Europe, Asia, and Africa, and its potential: 'The country being so … [Click Below for Full Description]

WEYERMAN, Jacob Campo.
[16], 412, [6]; [4], 412, [6], [4], 446, [4].First edition of richly illustrated biographies of more than 100 Dutch painters, male and female, still of interest for the history of Dutch art. The author, Jacob Campo Weyerman (1677-1747), was one of the foremost Dutch authors of the Enlightenment and was known for his merry style. For this history of Dutch art, he leans on Houbraken's De groote schouburgh der Neder-lantsche konstschilders en schilderessen (1718-1721).The first three parts were all published in 1729; the fourth - 40 years later - is mainly devoted to the painters from the Art Academy at The Hague. All 40 plates with artists' portraits, the frontispiece, 2 other portraits and the night scene are in the first 3 volumes (the later volume 4 has no plates). The lavish vignettes throughout the volumes are worth mentioning as well, mostly executed by Picart and apparently made for the present publication. The plates seem to be from a rare early state avant la lettre: all other copies we have seen have lettering on the plates, but the present copy has the information written on the plates in ink. The title-page lettering seems to be very slightly moved compared to other copies, but positions of the quire signatures all match. Perhaps this was a first impression or proof. From the library of Belgian artist/curator Philippe Jacques van Brée (1786-1871), with his owner's inscription on the front paste-down of each volume: "P.J. van Bréé". He was curator of the Royal Museum of Fine Art in Brussels from 1831-1861.With a few neat annotations in pencil in the margins of the pl … [Click Below for Full Description]

PALACIOS, Felix.
[12], 708, [28] pp.Rare fifth(?) edition, published in the year of the author's death, of a work on pharmaceutical chemistry written by the Spanish apothecary Félix Palacios (1677-1737). When the Palestra pharmaceutica appeared in 1706, it was the first work on the subject written in the Spanish language. Even though it became widely accepted and used in Spain, Palacios met strong resistance from his colleagues because he rejected the galenic, or plant based, medicines in favour of chemical medicines. With this he rejected the ideas of Galen, Mesue and Dioscorides, which were still the standard in most parts of Europe and the Middle East. The work starts with a preliminary text, followed by a chapter on the general principles of pharmacology and chemistry in the form of questions and answers. The other four chapters deal with the ingredients and making of the medicines. It discusses distillation and calcination methods with the engraved plates showing various tools and instruments: pots, furnaces, alambics etc.First few leaves slightly damaged along the edges, water stains throughout and binding soiled, worn and recased; a fair copy.l Blake, p. 336; Palau 209403; Wellcome IV, p. 286 (incomplete); WorldCat (6 copies).

CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de (Jacob Campo WEYERMAN translator; Antoine COYPEL illustrator).
[2], XXVI, 420 pp.First and only edition of a "free and joyous" Dutch translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote by Jacob Campo Weyerman (1677-1747), one of the foremost Dutch authors of the Enlightenment, who was known for his merry style. He added to this edition a Dutch translation of the biography of Cervantes by Gregorio Mayans (1737) and explanatory texts to the plates. The book is illustrated with 31 beautiful full-page Rococo-style hand-coloured plates engraved by Dutch artists Bernard Picart (12), Jacob van der Schley (13), Pierre Tanjé (5) and Simon Fokke (1) after paintings by French artists Antoine Coypel (25), Charles-Nicolas Cochin (2), Pierre-Charles Trémolières (2), François Boucher (1), Jacques-Philippe le Bas (1). The impressions are crisp and the hand-colouring is bright and of the highest level, with subtle gradient, in a gilt frame. Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), responsible for the designs of most illustrations, was one of the most important French history painters of the early 18th century. His Don Quixote paintings are highlights in his oeuvre and are now dispersed over several museum collections. Publisher De Hondt produced this edition in several sizes: 4to, folio and "grand-paper", the latter being the present copy (42 x 27 cm). This extra large size copy has wide margins and is indeed very rare, standard folio editions (35 cm) are present in several libraries but we did not trace the grand folio anywhere in a library. Moreover, the present copy has hand-coloured plates, which is even rarer. The Van Damme bindery was the "most important Amsterdam worksho … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Thoroton
London: Henry Mortlock, 1677. A beautiful original example of this first edition, superb patina and almost certainly the best currently available for sale anywhere and at under 50% of the cost of some inferior copies advertised on the internet. You can Google 'Robert Thoroton, Antiquities of Nottinghamshire' to get the full details about the book and so I won't list them here. I bought this copy around 25 years ago at an auction at a fine art sale at Neales of Nottingham (formerly on Mansfield Road but no longer in existence). It could well have been in the Nottingham area since first published in 1677, during the reign of Charles II. The contents of this copy are in excellent condition and I suspect have never been read as all of the pages and plates are fresh, free from stains, repairs or any other damage. There is the odd very tiny occasional rust spot but this doesn't affect more than one letter in any single place. The spine was replaced shortly after I bought the book as it was badly cracked; a professional bookbinder (name available to the buyer) carried out the restoration and retained as much as possible of the original boards. Any more information or images required, please contact me. [Attributes: First Edition]

Claude-François Ménestrier was a 17th-century French Jesuit philosopher known for his wide variety of written works. During his lifetime, he was the most widely known heraldist, much in part to his book 'Methods of Heraldic Principles'. He taught lectures on the science of heraldry and how it influenced noble coats of arms, the origins of coats of arms, and the meanings of the ornamentation on the designs. This book includes dozens of illustrations of French coats of arms and heraldic banners.

BASILIUS VALENTINUS.
Hamburg, in Verlegung Johann Naumanns und Georg Wolff, 1677. 8vo. Engr. front.+ (46),+ 456,+ (24); (2),+ 400,+ (28) pp. Woodcut illustrations in the text. Scattered stains. Old ink margin markings and sometimes underlinings. Ink notations on a few pages, longer notation on p. 383 in part two. Notations on front fly leaf. Somewhat soiled contemporary vellum. Owner's notation of Johan Oliviekrans. Library bookplate of the Provincial masonic lodge of Gothenburg, and its hand written number-label on spine. VD17 3:300698R. Cf. Ferguson I. pp. 77ff, Caillet pp. 114ff and Duveen pp. 46ff for other editions. Later edition of the collected alchemical writings of Basilius Valentinus. The often missing frontispiece is present, but in a very weak print. Basilius Valentinus is said to be a Benedictine monk of the 15th century, but is likely a pseudonym used by one or more later alchemical writers. It has been believed that the actual author is Johan Thölde (1565-1614), a salt manufacturer and alchemist, but later scholarship suggests that Thölde is only the first of several authors to use the name. Thölde was the publisher of the first work ascribed to Basilus "Ein kurtz summarischer Tractat, [...] Von dem grossen Stein der Uralten" 1599 which contains his famous twelve keys to the Philosopher's stone, here illustrated with charming woodcuts. Ferguson writes: "Whether Basilius Valentinus was a real person or not, whether he was a Benedictine monk at Erfurt or at Walkenried or not, whether he was a Benedictine monk at all or not, whether he was a native of Alsace or not, whether he fl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Of interest to beer historians, Tractatum Succinctum de Braxandi predates unified Germany's Reinheitsgebot by nearly two centuries [it's discussed in Shoepffer as a significant Bavarian regulation, but many other principalities had their own laws in 1670s]. Shoepffer's Tractum surveys a variegated patchwork of official recipes, edicts, and guild restrictions illuminating local beer production customs throughout Central Europe.
Engraved map, 422 x 585 mm, with outlines in original colour. A fine example of this rare early map of discoveries in New Holland and the Indian Ocean, in the first of several states issued. This is only the second printed map to have referenced the supposed discoveries of the mysterious French explorer Gonneville who was supposed to have chanced on the south land in 1504 when, en route to the Spice Islands, his ship was blown far off course while rounding the Cape of Good Hope and the French found themselves in a fertile, inhabited land. At the centre of the southern continent Du Val notes that "some [authorities] place here the Kingdoms of Psitac, Beach, Lucac, and Maletur", the names derived from Marco Polo that subsequent mapmakers tended to place on the southern continent. To the west and approximately below the Cape of Good Hope is the "Terre de Perroquets", a rough translation of early cartographers' "Regio Psittacorum" which name leads to the corruption "Psitac". It is here that Du Val notes that "in the year 1504 approached one named Gonneville who brought back Essonier, son of King Arosca." To the east, the coastline of the southern continent meanders north, heading towards the western and southern coasts of New Holland where, in the north, is Terre d'Arnems; to the west is Terre de Wit, just south of which is Terre d'Endracht, while towards the south-western corner are Terre d'Edels and Terre de Lewin, and off the west coast are the Houtman Abrolhos an … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary marbled wrappers. [16] ll. (interleaved) Second copy located of an early edition of a popular Amsterdam almanac. In the second half of the 17th century Zaagman held the privilege for the "comptoir" or office almanac, which was very lucrative because it securely held a large market each year. The beautifully designed woodcuts at the head of each month show lovely seasonal views. The present quarto edition was the most serious with a calendar, including the times of the sun and moon, tides, dates of fairs, weather forecasts, monthly prognostications, etc. One quire is added with extra explanations of the almanac and calendar, time tables of post coaches, travel coaches, ships and barges, a table of money values, the opening times of the city gates, etc.Only one other copy is known, located in the national library in The Hague and containing two additional leaves. Sede apostolica alli regni di Siam, Cocincina, Camboia, e Tunkino.Rome, printed by the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, 1677. 4to. Modern vellum. [14], 254, [2 blank] pp. First and only Italian translation of a work on the French mission to Siam, Cochinchina, Cambodia and Tonkin, originally written in French. It contains the story of three French missionaries who left Paris around 1660 to go as missionaries to the Far East. One of them died on the journey, but the other two, Louis Chevreuil and Antoine Hainques, made it to Southeast Asia. Chevreuil arrived in 1664 in Siam, and within five months he traveled to Cochinchina, where he had to leave due to persecution of Christians, discussed in the second part of the book. Hainques arrived in Cochinchina in 1665. Chevreuil was sent to Cambodia, which is covered in the third part of the book. The book is based on their letters and reports. Each part mentions the journey the missionaries took and the places they visited, giving descriptions of Mosambique, the islands Madagascar, Réunion and Cape Verde and more. Some minor foxing throughout, the first two leaves and the last leaf slightly soiled, and a small restored tear in the second leaf, otherwise still in good condition. Historisch verhael, of beschryving van de voyagie, gedaen onder de suite van den heere Koenraad van Klenk, extraordinaris ambassadeur ... aan zijne zaarsche majesteyt van Moscovien.Amsterdam, Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1677. 4to. With etched frontispiece and 6 etched folding plates by Romeyn de Hooghe. 19th-century boards. [8], 214 [= 220] pp. First edition of a valuable account detailing a Dutch embassy to Russia (1675-1676). The objective was to gain Russian participation in the anti-Swedish and anti-French alliance, and Koenraad Klenk, with his expert knowledge of Russian language and culture, was the ideal choice to lead the embassy. The mission was subsidized with more than 50,000 guilders, an extraordinary amount which was even exceeded during the journey. Although the embassy was well received and the Russians were showered with gifts, Klenk failed to persuade the Tsar to enter into war with Sweden. The six impressively evocative plates by Romeyn de Hooghe are typical examples of his rich allegorical imagery. Final leaves restored, with the missing text supplied in manuscrip, some soling, binding worn. Gaspar Schott
J.M. Schönwetter, Bamberg (Frankfurt am Main), 1677. Filled with illustrations (fold-out, full-page and in-line), and touching on many different practical branches of mathematics, this is a wonderful example of scientific publication during The Enlightenment. Schott treats the term mathematics in its widest sense and includes the subjects of astronomy, chronology, geography, horology, hydrography, mechanics, statics, optics, surveying, fortification and music. "In 1661, Kaspar Schott published his comprehensive textbook "Cursus mathematicus" in Würzburg for the first time, his "Encyclopedia of all mathematical sciences". It was so successful that it was published again in 1674 and 1677. In its 28 books, Schott gave an introduction for beginners in 22 mathematical disciplines by means of 533 figures and numerous tables. He cited or recommended far more than hundred authors, among them Protestants like Michael Stifel and Johannes Kepler, but also Catholics like Nicolaus Copernicus." - Knobloch, Kaspar Schott's "encyclopedia of all mathematical sciences" In addition to the fields listed above, the book opens with six chapters on Euclid's Elements. Richly illustrated, there are 41 plates (two are fold-out), one frontis, and one fold-out table. The frontis is noteworthy, largely a dedication to Leopold I, but Augustus De Morgan, in his 1847 work on Arithmetical Books, points out that as a Jesuit, Schott adhered to the Ptolemaic system (Earth at the center), and his dedication shows a cart, on celestial wheels, rolling over foundational pavement which shows the Copernican system. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Peter I, the Great, Czar of Russia (1672-1725)
No, place or date, 1677. 4to. 1 page (18 lines). Curious list of planetary and astrological (zodiac) symbols, all annotated in Russian and signed by Czar Peter the Great, who may have been introduced to astrology and alchemy by his chief physician, the state councillor Robert Erskine (1677-1718), known for his Paracelsian leanings. "The extent of Erskine?s absorption in alchemical questions is demonstrated in a flurry of letters he received in August and September 1717 from Johannes de Wilde, a self-styled 'Philochimicus' in Amsterdam. De Wilde provides plentiful evidence of Erskine?s embrace of iatrochemistry. On August 10, 1717, for example, de Wilde wrote that 'I have received by report that Your Excellency regards Arcana Medico-Chimica as of great value.' The 'philochimicus' then seeks to promote his alchemical adeptness by providing Erskine with a recipe for potable gold ('aurum potabile'). Rather than dismiss de Wilde as a charlatan, Erskine actually proposed to take him into service in St. Petersburg. According to de Wilde, the only reason he did not accept the offer was due to his suffering from 'fluxum haemorrhoidum'. Interestingly, de Wilde promoted his alchemical services in a variety of ways, ranging from offering to produce Johannes Baptista van Helmont?s 'aurum horizontale', to bolstering the Tsar?s treasury with gold and silver and to providing a 'delightful scent' of an 'aqua rosa' for Catherine, Peter?s wife" (R. Collis, Introduction to: A Curious Tsar. Peter the Great and Discovering Nature?s Secrets in Amsterdam. Exhibition catalogue, 2013). - A few paper … [Click Below for Full Description]
