1675. For sale is an excessively rare and culinarily important work indeed, this being a third edition of The Queen-like Closet or Rich Cabinet, stored with all manner of Rare Receipts for preserving, candying and cookery, very pleasent and beneficial to all ingenious persons of the female sex. Published London, Printed for Richard Lowndes at The White Lion in Duck Lane, near West-Smithfield, 1675. This copy collated as complete, aside from A2, A3 and p.337/8, lacking. Hannah Woolley, sometimes spelled Wolley, (1622 - c.1675) was an English writer who published early books on household management; she was probably the first person to earn a living doing this. Bound in contemporaneous quarter sheep, over marbled boards. The spine somewhat later, in matching sheep. Raised bands in blind. Original plain endpapers. ?Mappe-Monde geo-hydrographique.? Rare, large, decorative double hemisphere map of the world, engraved by Sigmund Gabriel Hipschmann and published by Johann Hoffmann in 1675. Hipschmann copied Hubert Jaillot?s similar smaller world map from a year earlier, which in turn is based on the map of Nicolas Sanson made in 1651. Coloured by a later hand. Size: approx. 52 x 87 cm.The corners of the map have allegorical figures representing the four continents: an Indian woman with a parrot and an alligator for the Americas, a woman holding the sun in her hands and an elephant for Asia, a black woman with a palm tree and two lions for Africa, and an armoured woman amidst weaponry for an ever belligerent Europe. Between the hemispheres at the top are two elaborate cartouches composed of cherubs riding dolphins with flowering banners. At the bottom a bold cartouche is flanked by two twin-tailed mermen. The map shows California as an island (?Isle de Californie?), a ?Terre de Iesso ou Ieco? extends from Japan to California. Only the East Coast of New Zealand is shown, along with an incomplete Australia, southern coast of Van Diemen?s Land and a tentative line of ?Terre Australe et Inconnue? [the unknown Southern Continent]. The map distinguishes the Great Lakes, based largely on Jesuit reports, and mentions Lac Superior, Lac des puans [?Lake of evil smells? for Lake Michigan] and Mer Doux.Price: Euro 4.950,- (incl. frame)??.

Nicholas Machiavel. Translated by Henry Neville.
London: Printed for John Starkey at the Miter in Fleetstreet, near Temple-Bar, 1675. 2°. [40], 177, 188-189, [5], 199-262, 265-267, [5], 267-314, 317-431, [6], 434-529, [7] pp. Translated by Henry Neville. Verso of t.p.: Licensed Febr. 2. 1674. Includes "Nicholas Machiavel’s letter to Zanobius Buondelmontius", not in fact by Machiavelli but by Henry Neville. "The history of Florence", "The prince", "The discourses of Nicolas Machiavel upon the first decade of Titus Livius", and "The art of vvar" each have separate dated title page; pagination and register are continuous. With three final advertisement leaves. In the fictitious letter claimed to be written by Niccolò Machiavelli, the English republican thinker Henry Neville warned against the dangers of priestcraft and the clerical conspiracy against mankind. The clergy, he argued, were colluding in the oppression of the people by supporting the cause of divine-right monarchy through their false interpretation of the scriptures. The “Letter” was first published as part of this first English edition of Machiavelli’s Works produced by the opposition bookseller John Starkey. Its most interesting feature is a section calling for rebellion against absolutist rulers, a section which could not be printed with the remainder of the text for its seditious content at a time when the opposition in England feared the rise of popery and arbitrary power; instead it was inserted in manuscript in individual copies supplied to trusted readers, including the Tuscan Grand Duke Cosimo III. Another trusted reader is likely to have been the then D … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary calf, richly gilt ornamented spine in 5 compartments (splits to upper joints, but firm). Scarce first edition, a reissue appeared 1712. "First edition of the first separate general work on fungi, describing edible and poisonous varieties. L'Escluse has done a study called 'Fungorum in Pannonis Observatorum Historia' which was first published as part of his 'Rariorum Plantarum Historia', 1601. However, according to Nissen, L'Escluse's original manuscript for this treatise with its eighty-seven original drawings had been lost by the publisher, so they had to use other illustrations for the 1611 edition, and these were quite inaccurate. Afterwards the lost manuscript reappeared and Sterbeeck used it as a basis for his work, adding much new material of his own" (Hunt 341)."Frans van Sterbeeck, a Flemish priest of noble extraction, was born and died in Antwerp where he lived for the greater part of his life. During the eight years following his ordination in 1655, while suffering from a chronic illness, he returned his attention to botany, with particular reference to fungi and soon became a recognized expert. He was on friendly terms with other Flemish botanists and in May 1663 was visited by John Ray who admired the rare plants in van Sterbeeck's garden. Puritas Haygica seu grammatica Armenica ...Rome, Sacrae Congretationis de Propaganda Fide, 1675. With:(2) AGOP, Joannes. Grammatica Latina Armenice' explicata: ... Rome, Propaganda Fide, 1675.(3) AGOP, Joannes. Puritas lingue Armenicae ...Rome, Propaganda Fide, 1674. 3 works in 1 volume. 4to. Contemporary sheepskin parchment. [6], 246, [4]; 215, [1 blank]; 215, [1] pp. The first and only editions of three complementary manuals concerning the Armenian language and grammar, in matching format and layout, all three by the Armenian priest Johannes Agop (1635-1691) in Venice, born in Istanbul. They were printed and published by the Propaganda Fide in Rome, established in 1623 to promote the Catholic religion, primarily outside Europe. The Propaganda Fide established its own printing office in 1626 and stocked it with a wide variety of non-Latin printing types, many newly cut for them. Like many of their publications, the present ones were intended in part for missionaries working in the Ottoman Empire, the Caucasas and Iran, but also in part for Christians who lived in these regions. For that reason Agop wrote not only an Armenian grammar with the instructive text in Latin (ad 1), but also a Latin grammar with the instructive text in Armenian (ad 2) and a work entirely in Armenian on the "purity" of the Armenian language (ad 3). These linguistic publications by Agop still are important for the history of the Armenian language, being among the few on the subject published in the 17th century. With the armorial stamp of Cardinal Albani (1649-1721), from 1700 Pope Clement XI, on the … [Click Below for Full Description]

STERBEECK, Franciscus van.
Theatrum fungorum, oft het tooneel der campernoelien waer inne vertoont wort de gedaante, ken-teeckens, natuere, crachten, voetsel, deught ende ondeught.Antwerp, Joseph Jacobs, 1675. 4to. With folding engraved portrait of the dedicatee (the Antwerp city physician Joh. van Buyten) by Arn. van Westerhout after Car. E. Biset, and 36 mostly folding engraved plates by P. van Sickeleers. Contemporary vellum. [38], 396 pp. First edition of the earliest Dutch monograph on fungi, by Franciscus van Sterbeeck (1630-1693), a Flemish clergyman, botanist and mycologist. Clusius had done research on fungi at the end of the 16th century, and published the results as part of his Rariorum plantarum historia in 1601. However, Clusius's original manuscript for this part, together with his 87 original drawings, had been lost. Accordingly, the publisher had to use other (and rather inaccurate) illustrations for the 1601 edition. Afterwards, the lost manuscript reappeared, and Sterbeeck used it as a basis for his own work, adding much new material. All species of toadstools and mushrooms are treated in detail, with descriptions of their natural history, as well as their gastronomic and medical properties. The work includes observations on wild growing fruits, nuts, roots, herbs etc. Of special interest are the remarkably fine plates, realistically illustrating a large number of fungi and wild fruits. Lacking the frontispiece and the 10 leaves of the Index at the end. Binding slightly soiled and damaged. The author presented this copy in 1682 to the Capuchin Friars of the monastery at Tervuren nea … [Click Below for Full Description]

With an etched frontispiece including a map of Formosa and view of the Dutch fortress there, and 8 etched views on 7 plates. Modern vellum. [8], 45, [1 blank]; [2], 72; 38, [2 blank] pp. First and only edition in the original Dutch of an essential primary source on the history of Formosa (Taiwan) during its occupation by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the years 1624-1662, and especially on its fall into Chinese hands in the latter year. Generally ascribed to the governor who "lost" Formosa, it defends his actions and harshly criticises the role of the VOC. The plates, well etched by Johannes van den Aveele and J. van Baden, show a temple interior, the Dutch fleet entering the bay, battle scenes on sea and land, the taking of fort Zeelandia, and two views on one plate showing Chinese atrocities against the Dutch. The last part, comprising 38 pages, provides the texts of 16 primary documents, 1646-1674.Frederic Coyett (1615-post 1675) set off for Formosa in 1645 and was appointed governor of the island in 1656. Although a large VOC fleet had come to Formosa in 1660, it departed in 1661 leaving only a small garrison behind. In 1661 the Chinese pirate Coxinga took advantage of the weakened position to attack the settlement there, which capitulated on 1 Fe … [Click Below for Full Description]

A fine example of humanistic legal scholarship, it is notable for its application of geometry-based surveying techniques, which are illustrated in the plates woodcuts. 1675. Rare antique book, REV. PATRIS LANC. ANDREWS EPISC. WINTON. PRECES PRIVATÆ. GRÆCÈ & LATINÈ. OXONII, E THEATRO SHELDONIANO. M. DC. LXXV. (1675). Lancelot Andrewes (1555 - 25 September 1626) was an English bishop and scholar, who held high positions in the Church of England during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I. During the latter's reign, Andrewes served successively as Bishop of Chichester, of Ely, and of Winchester and oversaw the translation of the King James Version of the Bible (or Authorized Version). In the Church of England he is commemorated on 25 September with a Lesser Festival. His best-known work is the Preces Privatae or Private Prayers, which has widespread appeal and has remained in print since renewed interest in Andrewes developed in the 19th century. Please look at all the photos for the best understanding of the condition and contents. The book measures 8.5cm x 13.5cm. There are some signs of age, use and wear. The leather hard cover is significantly faded and discoloured, some wear of the edges and general surface, though still bound tight. There is some occasional age/use related page discolouration/creasing dotted throughout, brown spotting/foxing etc typical with age. Overall contents binding appears strong, tight and complete. There are previous owner margin notes, text underlining, pen highlighting dotted throughout, mostly English translations of the Greek and Latin text The page edges are gold gilded, with an intricate gauffered design. även Mornay ?Een book, om then christne religionens wissheet?
