The University was involved with several printers in Oxford over the next century, although there was no formal university press. In 1586 the University of Oxford's right to print books was recognized in a decree from the Star Chamber. This was enhanced in the Great Charter secured by Archbishop Laud from King Charles I, which entitled the University to print 'all manner of books'.Delegates were first appointed by the University to oversee this process in 1633. Minutes of their deliberations are recorded dating back to 1668. The structure of Oxford University Press (OUP) as it exists today began to develop in a recognizable form from that time. The University also established its right to print the King James Authorized Version of the Bible in the seventeenth century. This Bible Privilege formed the basis of OUP's publishing activities throughout the next two centuries. From the late 1800s OUP began to expand significantly, opening the first overseas OUP office in New York in 1896. Other international branches followed, including Canada (1904), Australia (1908), India (1912), Southern Africa (1914).Today OUP has offices in 50 countries, and is the largest university press in the world. ****************************************************************************COLLATION AND CONDITIONTHE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER TITLE ENGRAVING, 1 page, a beautifully detailed engraving of a grand interior scene with forward facing people, a nice, strong and vivid impression, slight loss to lower left of image (see pic) verso is blank and clean, usually found missing, Rare! , COMPLETE.THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER TITLE PAGE, 1 page, letterpress title, Dated Oxford at the Theater 1675, owner's inscription "James Edward's Book" in an ancient hand with quill and some misc. doodlings in the blank spaces, Very Nice !, COMPLETE.THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS,AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES, OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND; WITH THE PSALTER OR PSALMS OF DAVID, unpaginated, signed A1- F8, printed in Roman type font, features a table of the moveable feasts calculated for 40 years, the calendar, proper lessons to be read, lessons proper for the holy dayes, the order for morning and evening prayer, the letany, the collects, the communion, public and private baptism, of matrimony, visitation and communion of the sick, burial of the dead, churching of women, child birth, the gun powder treason, King Charles Martyr. , King Charles birth and return, the psalter and more, NO loose, torn or missing pages, paper is strong, supple and clean, excellent wide margins all around, Very Good !, COMPLETE.GENERAL TITLE ENGRAVING, 1 page, an amazing engraving that represents the Transfiguration above a mountain inscribed Mt. Gilt borders and dentelles, a.e.g., marbled endpapers with reinforced cloth hinges. A few tiny scrapes to boards, very good copies overall. His place in the annals of historical scholarship is an honourable one. His speciality was the retrieval of factual information relating to the great institutions of the middle ages: the monasteries, the legal system, and the aristocracy. The scale of his operations was greater than any previous endeavour, and its achievements were astonishing, especially in view of the disorder of the records from which he worked. " (ODNB).

Institutiones Dialecticae juxta veridica(m) Aristotelis et Divi Thomae Doctrina(m).

Manuscript: 17th century. 8vo (19,5 x 13,6 cm). 323 pp + 121 blanks. Contemporary brick-red morocco binding, covers with gilt double-frame and corners with gilt flower-ornaments, spine with 4 raised bands, 4 compartments decorated with gilt fleurons and one with gilt-lettered title "Logica", gilt-decorated board-edges, all paper-edges gilt, marbled endpapers. The text is illustrated with 5 text-drawings in ink and 14 full-page religious copper engravings that have been bound in. As frontispiece a copper-engraved cartouche in baroque style in which the author's name, his place of origin and date (1675) is drawn. A neatly written/calligraphed 17th-century manuscript, containing a methodical/scholastic compendium of classical logic, that exquisitely illustrates the religious-philosophical-political conflicts of those times. The treatise is divided into several chapters, each with a number of dubia. Each dubium is followed by its Conclusio and several Respondio's. A dubium was in those times in France an erudite expression of doubt in the fight for the true faith. The author of this manuscript defended the well-known Catholic religion that offered him certainty, but nevertheless, the manuscript provides a nice demonstration of the religious conflicts of those times. Spine & corners bit bumped, leather of covers with a few scratches and the calligraphed ink of the swelling-stroked letters on some places visible on reverse leaf-side, but altogether a very well-kept and well-bound interesting manuscript. The book also contains the first distinction between diabetes mellitus, characterized by glycosuria, from diabetes insipidus, in which sugar is not present in the urine.          LAWS AND ORDERS OF WARR TO KEEPE INIQUITY OUT OF THE CAMP [manuscript title]

[Massachusetts, 1675. [2]pp., on a bifolium. Previously folded. Light wear at edges. Lower quarter of sheet dampstained. Tanned and lightly foxed. Good. A scarce and important manuscript detailing military regulations written for Massachusetts militia raised to fight in King Phillip's War. The rules were likely drafted by an officer of a company of Massachusetts militia as promulgated by the Massachusetts General Court, and correspond to those printed in the history of Massachusetts by Thomas Hutchinson. The regulations begin with a distinct nod to the fervent religiosity of the colony: "Lett no man presume to blasphame the holy & Blessed Trinity, God the father God the Son; and God the holy Ghost: upon payn of having his tongue bored w[i]th a hot Iron." Other articles offer similar strictures on irreligious behavior (with more mild punishments). For instance, "unlawfull oaths & Execrations, & Scandalous Acts In derogation of Gods Honour," would be punished by a loss of pay. Those who did not attend divine services would also be subject to punishment at the captain's discretion. Other regulations concerned largely military matters, offering prohibitions against mutiny, disobedience to orders, desertion, gambling, murder, stealing ammunition-many of which were punishable "upon payn of death." Similarly, "Raypes Ravishments unnatural abuses and Adultery shall by punished with death." (This was also the punishment for "Fornication & other desolute Lasciviousness".) Interestingly, the author of this version neglected to add the General Court's definition of arbitrary punishment, or discretionary punishment, which they defined as "meant not to extend to life or limb," perhaps wishing to keep the men guessing, lest they lose their discipline. A significant manuscript document pertaining to the history of King Philip's War and Massachusetts colonial history.
