[Colonial Boston]. Mason, Ralph and Anna.
Single leaf (10. Suffolk County, MA: Nov 22, 1675. Single leaf (10.25" h x 15" w), 1p., 34 lines of legible secretary hand in ink, with notes, signatures and two red wax seals beneath. Expected folds and even toning, one 3mm burn hole and four smaller chips along internal folds with slight loss of letters but not of sense. Small chip to bottom edge with loss of one letter of the phrase "her mark". § Original manuscript deed recording the sale of eight acres of Spectacle Island in Boston Harbor by one English settler to another. The sellers were almost certainly Ralph Mason (1600-1678) and his wife Anne (1600-after 1679) who came to Boston from London in the ship Abigail in 1635. Ralph trained as a carpenter in London and along with a partner, Henry Messinger, he is credited with being the first to bring fine cabinetry-making to Boston. (A chest of drawers made by them sold at auction for $20,000 in 2003.) The buyer was Thomas Bill (c.1618-1678) who emigrated to Boston colony with his parents sometime before 1635. He is recorded variously as a lighterman, an innholder, a mariner, and a planter and was a member of the Second Church during the time of Increase Mather. He bought his first acres of Spectacle Island from his brother in 1666 and increased his holding over the following years until by this purchase he had acquired about half the island. His son, Samuel, acquired the rest and for the next 80 years some or all of the island was owned by the Bill family. The island is an interesting oddity in the Boston Harbor, originally shaped like a pair of spectacles until landfill … [Click Below for Full Description]

The first national road atlas of any country in Western europe and a landmark in the mapping of England and Wales. Although titled 'volume the first', it is all that was ever published. Ogilby's work was composed of maps of seventy-three major roads and cross-roads, presented in a continuous strip-form. For the first time in England, an atlas was prepared on a uniform scale, at one inch to a mile, based on the statute mile of 1,760 yards to the mile. Ogilby claimed that 26,600 miles of roads were surveyed in the course of preparing the atlas, but only about 7,500 were actually depicted in print. "In its comprehensiveness, its incorporation of new devices of computation and delineation, and its opulence of paper, design and decoration, it immediately set a new standard for map-making in England. this volume was an attempt at a scientific study not only of the roads but also the terrain and habitations on either side of the roads" (K.S. Eerde, John Ogilby and the Taste of his Times, 1976, p.137). ESTC R483348; Chubb CI. [Attributes: First Edi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Undescribed state, without the coat of arms of Johan Honigh (1629-1692). Map of the area north of Rome, reaching to Orvieto and Orbetello, here called Lower Tuscany. Two decorative cartouches with cherubs, scale of miles and coat of arms. Published by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk, in 1700 circa, from the plate by Joannes Janssonius. Frederick de WIT (1630 - 1706)
Incisione in rame, coloritura originale a mano, in buone condizioni." Fine old color example of De Wit's chart of the southern part of South America, from his Orbis Maritimus ofte Zee Atlas. Striking example of this early Magellanica map, extending from Rio de la Plata to the Magellan Strait and Tierra del Fuego. The dramatic cartouche depicts an encounter between Tierra del Fuego natives and Dutch explorers. A naval battle unfolds in the South Atlantic. The chart is one of the most elegant and detailed charts of South America published in the 17th Century. The map was likely engraved by Romein de Hooghe. The map was re-issued by Renard and by Ottens in the early 18th Century.

ice skating scene, ijsgezicht - Simon after Nicolas Lancret
Prijs: Euro525,- (incl. lijst, BTW margeregeling)

World map - Johann Hoffmann, 1675
1675. „Mappe-Monde geo-hydrographique.“ Rare, large, decorative double hemisphere map of the world, engraved by Sigmund Gabriel Hipschmann and published by Johann Hoffmann in 1675. Hipschmann copied Hubert Jaillot’s similar smaller world map from a year earlier, which in turn is based on the map of Nicolas Sanson made in 1651. Coloured by a later hand. Size: approx. 52 x 87 cm. The corners of the map have allegorical figures representing the four continents: an Indian woman with a parrot and an alligator for the Americas, a woman holding the sun in her hands and an elephant for Asia, a black woman with a palm tree and two lions for Africa, and an armoured woman amidst weaponry for an ever belligerent Europe. Between the hemispheres at the top are two elaborate cartouches composed of cherubs riding dolphins with flowering banners. At the bottom a bold cartouche is flanked by two twin-tailed mermen. The map shows California as an island (“Isle de Californie”), a “Terre de Iesso ou Ieco” extends from Japan to California. Only the East Coast of New Zealand is shown, along with an incomplete Australia, southern coast of Van Diemen’s Land and a tentative line of “Terre Australe et Inconnue” [the unknown Southern Continent]. The map distinguishes the Great Lakes, based largely on Jesuit reports, and mentions Lac Superior, Lac des puans [“Lake of evil smells” for Lake Michigan] and Mer Doux. Price: Euro 4.950,- (incl. frame)  Â
