Enkele wormgaatjes in bovenmarge.

Slight to moderate staining, rubbing and edgewear to covers, especially at tips. Cracking to front exterior hinge, but all holds quite firmly. Abrasion to lower half of front pastedown, perhaps by removal of a bookplate. Slight staining to title page, with scattered light staining and minimal foxing to the contents. Otherwise, a a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this rare early illustrated edition of the Corneille verse translation of the devotional classic, The Imitation of Christ. ~KM5~ A 1673 Parisian imprint - illustrated with more than 100 engravings - of dramatist Pierre Corneille's renowned French poetic translation of one of Christendom's most beloved devotion works, The Imitation of Christ. The Imitation, first written in Latin by Catholic monk Thomas a Kempis between 1420 and 1427, has been translated and produced in more distinct editions than any book apart from the Bible. This pocket-sized edition, produced by seventeenth century Parisian publisher Guillaume de Luyne, employs some 114 illustrative engravings - one for each chapter - much like the 'emblem books' which were enormously popular during this era (some produced by this printer). The text of The Imitation of Christ in this edition is the French verse translation by Pierre Corneille (1606-1684), generally considered one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Moliere and Jean Racine. In 1652, Corneille's play 'Pertharite' met with poor critical reviews and he decided to quit the theatre. He began to focus on this influential verse translation of The Imitation, which he completed in 1656. It is still widely considered the best of the several poetical translations of a Kempis' devotional classic attempted over the years. This edition is quite rare - not in COPAC, and OCLC (No. 902325178) locates only one copy at institutions worldwide, held at the University of Antwerp. . Good. 1673. First Edition.

For raising the rents of lands. In order whereunto, it is proved necessary, I. That a stop be put to further buildings in and about London. II.       London printed in the year 1673 - 4to., (2) + 92 (i.e. 62) + (2)pp., including the final blank I4 but without the initial blank (A1), very light dampstain on a leaf or two at beginning and end, but a very good crisp copy now well bound in old-style quarter calf over marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands and label. Very scarce. Wing G.1491. Goldsmiths 2026. Kress 1338. Massie 905. A veritable manifesto touching on most of the social and economic issues of the day, some of the author's proposals being controversial to say the least, others close to revolutionary. Although the author's purpose was revenue-raising for the crown, the amount of detail contained in this set of proposals makes this perhaps one of the best published portraits of life just after the Restoration, particularly in respect of wages, prices, living and travel costs and so forth.         Guiana siue Amazonum Regio

John Ogilby, London 1673 - Map. Uncolored Copper plate engraving. Image measures 11.5" x 14" This beautiful 1673 map of the Amazon River and its surrounding areas was issued by John Ogilby. The map includes the regions of Guyana and notes the legendary Lake Parima (Parime Lacus) and the fabled kingdom of El Dorado or the city of Manoa along its banks. Following Sir Walter Raleigh's 1595 publication of "The Discoverie of the Large, Rich, and Bewtiful Empyre of Guiana", in which he connected the city of Manoa with El Dorado, European interest in the regain grew considerably in the 17th century and various explorers set out in search of gold in Guiana. The city and the lake would continue to appear on maps until the early 1800s. Title and scale cartouches animated with indigenous and mythological figures, including Poseidon and Hermes. The map is in good condition with original plate mark visible and minor foxing. John Ogilby (1600--1676) is often noted in the literature for his wide ranging pursuits--dancer, actor, translator, tutor, among others--that, more often than not, ended in failure. But rather than thinking of these pursuits as unsuccessful, they might be better considered as steps toward his ultimate destiny: cartography. Ogilby got his first taste of the trade in 1666--himself at the age of 66--by surveying and mapping London after the Great Fire. The project inspired him to pursue and publish geographical descriptions of the wider world, including China, Japan, and Africa. In 1675, a year after he was appointed "Kings Cosmographer and Geographic Painter," he published the defining work of his career: a road atlas of England entitled "Britannia." The original volume was the first road atlas to include physical features from the landscape and was notable for its scale of one inch to a standard mile. This impressive and innovative volume finally secured Ogilby's place in the history books one of the most memorable and important figures of 17th-century cartography. This is a wonderful example of his work.

Stammbaum der Familie de Giez von Bern.

Please notify before visiting to see a book. Almquist, Bibliografisk förteckning över stridskrifter, A 1a. Första upplagan. Ett rättat nytryck utkom samma år. ?Index? Sina egna polemiska svar samlade Pufendorf i ?Eris Scandica?.

Decimus Junius Juvenalis, and Aulus Persius Flaccus translated and illustrated, as well with sculpture as notes By Barten Holyday

Oxford: W. Downing for F. Oxlad Senior, J. Adams, and F. Oxlad Junior, 1673. Hardcover. First Barten Holyday translation of Juvenal. Folio. pp. [12], 341, [3]. Including 49 engraved illustrations with the notes and 4 fold out plates. The first title page is printed in red and black. The “Satyres of Flaccus” contains a separate title [Oo3]. Oddly, the notes or “illustrations to the first satyre” appear on p. 82 following the fifth satire and its accompanying notes. The pages in signatures P and Q are bound out of order, but all is accounted for. No vertical half-title is present on the last leaf. Bound in full period calf (showing rubbing and wear) with blind stamped panels on the front and rear covers. Spine head and tail caps are neatly restored. An armorial bookplate (dated 1810) is pasted on the inside front cover. Interior pages are generally clean with occasional light marginal spotting. Barten Holyday’s English translation of Persius Flaccus was first published in 1616. However, his translation of Juvenal was only published posthumously (1673) by his step-son William Dewey along with a reissue of the Persius translation. Holyday produced an almost literal translation of Juvenal’s works. The English poet John Dryden praised Holyday (in a backhanded way) for the accuracy of his work while at the same time criticizing him for his inability to capture Juvenal’s poetic voice. The extensive commentaries, however, contain much scholarly information. The engraved illustrations depict various classical scenes, artifacts and architecture. Decimus Junius Juvenalis was a Roman poet and satirist writing at the dawn of the second century c.e. His 16 satires mock the corruption, licentiousness, crime and greed of Roman society in his day. Aulus Persius Flaccus was a Stoic satirist of the first century c.e. who’s satires are known to have contained veiled and unflattering references to the Roman emperor Nero. [ESTC R12290; Moss II, p 170; Schweiger II, p. 515].

Paris: Michel Bobin & Nicolas Le Gras, 1673. Hardcover. Third French Edition, revised and corrected. 4to. pp. [38], 754. Decorative initials and ornamental head pieces at the beginning of each chapter. Contemporary calf boards (rubbed, corners neatly restored) re-backed including new hand sewn headbands. Original end papers are preserved but worn at the edges. Two names are written in a contemporary hand at the top of the title page (1 name is crossed out). Another name (also crossed out) is inscribed beneath the imprint; a small shelf number is written in the upper right corner. Pages are generally clean with occasional minor soiling and spotting. A narrow piece is missing from the upper margins of pp. 311-320 (4 cm. long x 5-7 mm. deep) - either from rough opening or from a manufacturing error; brown ink spot on fore-edge of text block; leaf T2 marked S2. Leaves remain untrimmed after last re-sewing. Descartes's "Meditations metaphysiques" was first published in Latin as "Meditationes de prima philosophia" (1641). The first French edition (printed in 1647) was produced by the Duc de Luynes under Decartes supervision. De Luynes translated the first part and Claude Clerselier the second. The "Meditations" offer the most detailed presentation of Descartes metaphysical system. [Tchemerzine IV, p.201-202; Brunet I, 609; Querard 758].

Theatrum Machinarum Novum, das ist, Neu-vermehrter Schauplatz der Mechanischen Künsten

Nuremberg: Paulus Fürsten, 1673. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. (Frontispiece dated 1661). Folio [33 x 21.5 cm], (6) ff., 44 pp., 154 numbered engraved plates. Bound in original blindstamped vellum over wooden boards, raised bands on spine, with title written in ink in an old hand, clasps and ties present. Some tiny wormholes in blank margin of engraved title and a few leaves; some minor handsoiling; small and light waterstain in upper margin of title and following leaves; typical toning and light browning seen in this volume, but rather less than usual; a few impressions of plates on the light side, or shaved with no loss to image. Generally a fresh copy with good strikes in a handsome original binding. Scarce second German edition and unusually fine copy, in its original blindstamped binding, of this supra-illustrated machinery book devoted to pumps, presses and milling machinery by the Nuremberg architect and engineer Böckler. The work contains a total of 154 full-page engraved plates, depicting a wide variety of mills, waterwheels, and grinding machines, including designs for water-driven perpetual-motion machines. The work is also unusual among Baroque machine books for primarily containing devices that had actually been realized-not simply the fantasies of inventors who could find a willing engraver.Machines described and pictured include paper mills; gunpowder mills; a fulling mill; a smithy with water-powered bellows; pipe boring mills; grinding apparatus for sharpening tools, knives and weapons; and windmills. The majority are grist mills and water-raising devices powered by water, animals, and humans, though other noteworthy examples include a roasting spit, a fire-engine, a pumping system for an outdoor fountain, a man-powered mill which is also a sort of circular stair-stepper, and a famous attempt at designing a perpetual motion machine. Many of the engravings are familiar because they were plagiarized in technology publications for the next hundred years. The work was first published in German in 1661, with a Latin translation following the next year. Several reprints of both followed, always with the same plates. Like most German books of the period, Böckler's books tend to brown, and this is one of the cleanest and freshest copies of his books we have ever encountered. * Graesse I.459; Hoover 142 (Latin); Singer, History of Technology III.16-17.

        Guiana siue Amazonum Regio

London: John Ogilby, 1673. unbound. Map. The map is in good condition with original plate mark visible and minor foxing.John Ogilby (1600--1676) is often noted in the literature for his wide ranging pursuits--dancer, actor, translator, tutor, among others--that, more often than not, ended in failure.

Fint exemplar. Collijn sp. 671, 164 resp. 826 (nämner ej planschen). Fant 5:2, 34 resp. 39 (med felaktig titel). Schweiger II, s. 701. Första upplagan utkom i Stockholm 1651.

A scroll on thin rice paper (3400 x 190 mm.) containing 28 finely drawn and hand-colored images in red, ochre, and black, depicting the objects used in wedding ceremonies and as dowries in the tradition of the "Ogasawara-ryu" (Ogasawara school) of etiquette. Label on scroll stating "Wedding style and ceremony" in Japanese

N.p. [but Japan]: dated "1673" but probably early 18th century The Ogasawara school, founded in the 12th century, laid the foundations for etiquette for the samurai class throughout Japan. These rules and practices covered bowing (the school's teachings describe nine different ways of performing a bow), eating, marriage, and other aspects of everyday life, down to the minutiae of correctly opening or closing a door. The scroll depicts a number of objects, in vivid color, used at weddings. They include ornate boxes (the creator of the scroll provides measurements, details of the materials, and ornamentation), an incense burner and its tool box, special letter boxes for containing poetry sheets, a box to store cloaks, an eye-brow making kit, pillow boxes, low tables, large letter paper storage boxes, more incense tools, a lacquer-ware wash basin, a mirror-holding vanity table, etc. At the end of the manuscript is an inscription which we have roughly translated: "Ogasawara Nagatoki, Hoshino Kamonnosuke, Katsuto Hachitayu [these are the names of the three providers of details regarding the wedding ceremony] this is a secret scroll, Kawasaki, Kurosaka, Koike [again, three more providers of details], 1673."

*-------*. In-4. Collation : 12 pp. En feuilles.

First edition of the most important source to our knowledge of the Faroe Islands, printed in 750 copies only. Debes was appointed chaplain in Thorshavn in 1651, minister in 1652 and headmaster at the grammar school. In 1670 he became rural dean and complained about the royal commission agent. Debes travelled to Copenhagen to defend the islands and during his visit he acquired a bachelor degree and published the Danish edition in 1673. The book attracted lot of attention when it was published, and it is translated into English and German. It is still a major source on the knowledge of the Faroe Islands.
