[IMAGINARY VOYAGE].
8 pp.First and only edition of a 1672 political pamphlet in the form of a spin-off from Henry Neville's very popular 1668 story of a voyage to the imaginary utopian/dystopian Isle of Pines. The present story is written as a conversation between three militia men on watch discussing the turbulent politics of 1672. One tells of his (fictitious) voyage and several years residence on a (fictitious) utopian island called Mallanbruino in the South Pacific. He says it is one degree south of the Isle of Pines. On Mallanbruino, the industrious people were oppressed by an emperor but rose up and defeated him with help from a prince, who also replaced the evil regents. They note the remarkable similarities to events in the Dutch Republic. The island then set up a new and fairer democratic representative political system, bringing peace and happiness to the island. The three men conclude that the Dutch Republic should introduce such a system. Some spots and a small restoration to the extremities of the title-page, otherwise in good condition. A fascinating but little-known pamphlet building political propaganda around a story related to the popular imaginary voyage to the Isle of Pines.l Knuttel 10600; M. Reinders, Printed pandemonium, pp. 195-199; not in Ford; Gove; Scheckter.

An illustrated and annotated carto-bibliogr … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROSS, Alexander
London: for John Williams, 1672. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Alexander Ross was an important Scottish controversialist writer who is remembered for his various attack writings on prominent figures such as Hobbes, Harvey, and Browne. He also published a series of works on astronomy and religion in which he defines aspects of world theological beliefs. The focus of 'Les Religions du Monde', 'Religions of the World', was to demonstrate that these religions were practicing heresy and idol worship. He provided context on the practices of figures such as John Huss, Michael Servetus, and Mahomet. This fine, 1672 English edition is also includes 17 impressive portrait engravings.

With a large woodcut publisher's device on the title-page, 3 large folding woodcut plates, more than 30 woodcuts in the text, nearly all full-page, and numerous woodcut decorations. 18th-century stiff plain wrappers. [27], [1 blank], 79, [1 blank], 89-331 [= 131], [1] pp. Rare last edition of one of the most popular and best illustrated 16th-century accounts of sundials and their manufacture, with a new chapter describing and illustrating a moondial. After briefly explaining the principles and the various kinds of sundials, it discusses their manufacture. Included are horizontal and wall sundials, and the affect of the location. The last chapter, apparently unique to the present edition, is devoted to the moondial, a sort of nocturnal for telling time at night, but using moonlight rather than the position of the stars. The three large folding plates (about 32 x 38 cm) and the dozens of large woodcuts provide numerous diagrams to aid the reader in both understanding and constructing sundials. Leipzig, Ritsch, 1672. 4to. Modern green morocco. [20], 144, [8] pp. First German edition, translated by Thomas Ritsch, of a comparison of what had been two Dutch colonial regions: the New Netherlands (now the eastern United States from Delaware to Rhode Island) and the Dutch parts of the Guianas (now Guyana and Surinam). "The author acknowledges that New Netherland is much preferable to the Netherlands; that one can more easily obtain large and independent possessions" but having "an interest in the colony of Guyana, to which he was attached as an officer, he attempts to show how much Guyana is superior to New Netherland," by setting forth the advantages of the climate, the soil, and general conditions of the warmer country. When Keye first published his work in Dutch in 1659, both regions were under Dutch colonial control, but in 1664 the British took New Amsterdam and renamed it New York, gaining control over what had been The New Netherlands. The 1667 Treatry of Breda formally accepted the existing situation: Dutch control of most of the Guianas and English control of the New Netherlands. Although not explicitly acknowledged, the present German translation may have been published to convince prospective German emigrants to choose the Dutch Guianas over the British colonies in North America. [6], 472; [473]-876, [36], [8], 66, [2], [8], 239 pp. Rare Dordrecht edition of the standard German pharmacopoeia (Pharmacopoeia Augustana) and the Pharmacopoeia regia, here in a single edition, providing a very sharp critique of the standard German pharmacopoeia. These works form an outstanding and influential contribution to the reform of the pharmacopoeia in the second half of the 17th century. In his commentary on the standard Augsburg pharmacopoeia, Zwelfer reveals a bellicose nature in the tradition of Paracelsus. Objections (animadversiones) are made to almost every recipe, voiced in a tone of sarcasm and invective that aroused not only the Collegium Medicum of Augsburg, but almost everyone mentioned in the book, in cities from Montpellier to Venice. In Venice, Zwelfers criticism of Otto Tacheniuss "volatile viperine salt" (a secret medicine that had helped him make a fortune) inspired Tachenius to write his Hippocrates chimicus, which gained more fame than anything Zwelfer ever wrote. In vol. 2 Zwelfer again launches an attack on Tacheniuss work (pp. 1-206), along with another on a work by Franciscus Verny (pp. 207-231). Later blue/grey paper wrappers. 8 pp. First and only edition of a 1672 political pamphlet in the form of a spin-off from Henry Neville's very popular 1668 story of a voyage to the imaginary utopian/dystopian Isle of Pines. A fascinating but little-known pamphlet building political propaganda around a story related to the popular imaginary voyage to the Isle of Pines. Knuttel 10600; M. With engraved illustration on title-page, engraved authors portrait, 103 engraved emblems by Pierre Daret after Otto Vaenius, and an engraved folding plate. 18th-century gold-tooled tree calf. XI, [5], 211, [1] pp. Attractive copy of a splendidly illustrated edition combining Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata and Le Roy Sieur de Gomberville's La doctrine des Moeurs, tiree de la philosophie des Stoiques..... Pierre Daret had made the emblems in De Gombervilles work based on Vaenius's, enlarging and slightly improving them after the latest fashion. The Brussels publisher had probably acquired Daret's plates, and used them again in the present edition, returning the authorship to Vaenius, while also retaining De Gomberville's instructive comments. In this perfect combination of Vaenius' educational emblems and Gomberville's moral doctrine based on stoic philosophers and explained for the instruction of youth, the quotations from Horace made into emblems became popular again.Slightly browned with some marginal thumbing. In very good condition. Landwehr, Romanic emblem books, 479; Praz, pp. 402-403 & 523-524.

The first (1634) and second (1635) editions were published at Munich by Nicolas Henricus. Every chapter is headed by a finely engraved emblem in an egg-shaped form, with 4 small additional views in the corners. "In this most curious of emblem books, the author takes the egg as inspiration for meditations on Easter and the Eucharist. One hundred egg-shaped emblems explore the meaning of the egg within a Catholic theological perspective" (John Carter Brown Library). The range of meanings assigned to the egg through the ages provides a veritable paradise for the ardent iconologist. Great attention is shown for detail in both the emblems and the corner views, all engraved with excellent care. Each emblem is followed by extensive edifying readings. Some of the emblems show indigenous Americans (using them as inspiration for the following meditations) or relate directly to America. With some large water stains on the first three leaves and marginal water stains throughout, some occasional foxing. Otherwise in good condition. Landwehr, German emblem books, 555; Praz, p. 504; cf. The John Carter … [Click Below for Full Description]
