        Traite de Physique.

1672 - Traité de Physique. Not after 1672, not before 1671. BOUND MANUSCRIPT of the Standard work of the time in physics, created not more than one year after publication of the first book edition. 546 numbered text pages plus 6 pages of content list. The text ist not a word-by-word copy of Rohault's Traité. Devided in 4 chapters, it contains about 70% of the text of the print edition. Since Rohault's textbook was widely used by students of the time, it is likely that the manuscript was created as a teaching aid. It is written in black ink in a neat and accurate hand and contains several illustrations which are also found in the printed version. Bound in contemporary calf, spine with gilt-lettered label, marbled endpapers, old (18th century?) rebacking and leather reinforcement of corners, some rubbing of boards and extremities, single wormhole in upper board. A torn portion of the second leaf of contents is repaired with little loss of text. The text pages are lightly browned with occasional minor spotting and faint dampstaining to first leaves only. The final text leaf is stained and somewhat frayed at fore-margin. Provenance: D. A. Lemaigre (signed and dated 1672 on last page of contents), another (illegible) signature to the final page. Very good condition. ---- The French physicist Rohault was born in Amiens in 1620 and died in Paris in 1675. "In 1671, Jacques Rohault published his Traité de physique, a textbook on physics relying on his weekly conferences held in Paris. A good mathematician and at the same time a curious experimenter, Rohault was one of the main Cartesian figures of his time. Connected to Parisian philosophical circles, Rohault was deeply concerned with the reception of Descartes' philosophical views. He was associated with Claude Clerselier and he encouraged Pierre-Sylvain Régis to spread Cartesianism in Toulouse. Performing experiments and using instruments in his observations, allowed for a very good reception of Rohault's natural philosophy in the late seventeenth century. Thus, his textbook on physics was quickly translated and disseminated across Europe." (M.Dobre, Cartesian Empiricisms, pp. 203-226. In: Studies in History and Philosophy of Science book series, AUST, vol. 31). Rohault strongly recommended the use of experiments, discussing them in detail in his textbook. It deals with every part of physics known in his time and he elaborates on optics, mathematical astronomy, the tides, the air, minerals and metals and one of the most important sections is devoted to electric and magnetic phenomena. In 1672 Samuel Clarke translated Rohault's work as System of Natural Philosophy, which was used as a university textbook for more than half a century. With numerous editions, it gained an independent status through its annotations that purported to correct it with reference to the theories of Isaac Newton. - Visit our website for additional images and information.

London, William Wells and Robert Scott, 1672 - 4to (202 x 150 mm), pp [lvi, including longitudinal half-title, and errata leaf] 16; 33-565 [recte 563] [11], with eight engraved plates, five of which are folding; a fine copy in contemporary Frech speckled calf, spine elaborately panelled in gilt, speckled edges. First edition, London issue (see below), a fine copy of Willis’s foundation work of neurology (a term coined by him). Willis believed that besides his immortal soul, man had a mortal ‘animal’ soul or spirit that was responsible for physiological and neurological activity and pathology. ‘The corporeal, or “brutish,” soul consists of two parts: one lodged in the blood is responsible for vital functions, the other located in the nervous system is responsible for functions of actions and sensation. In explaining the functions of the sensitive soul, he recapitulated many of the neurophysiological concepts first introduced in Cerebri anatome, especially those of localization, and extended these to invertebrates with some of the first detailed dissections of the earthworm, oyster, and lobster. ‘As with previous books, Willis was not satisfied with anatomical investigation and speculative interpretation. He goes on to argue, with the aid of extensive case histories and numerous postmortems how a broad range of disorders are due to derangement of the neural portion of the corporeal soul. Sleeping and waking, headache, lethargy, narcolepsy, coma, nightmare, vertigo, apoplexy, delirium, frenzy, and paralysis – all are of neurological, rather than supernatural or humoral, origins. Willis, a member of Robert Boyle’s Oxford circle of scientists, was a follower of William Harvey. Along with Thomas Lower he began in 1661 a series of dissections of the brain and conducted a programme of investigative anatomy, far in advance of anything done before. His resulting works, Cerebri anatome (1664) and De anima brutorum (1672), were the ‘the first comprehensive books on the brain and nervous system to be published in Europe. The first edition of De anima brutorum was simultaneously issued in quarto format with two different imprints, one being the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford for Richard Davis, and the second being, as here, London, published by William Wells and Robert Scott. There is no priority to either issue. The titles are, apart from imprint, identical in setting. Neither is a cancel. The Oxford issue contains (usually), on a separate unsigned leaf, an Imprimatur dated December 1, 1671, for the college; this of course did not apply outside Oxford and was therefore not required for the London issue. Further variations between the two issues also occur in the presence or absence of ‘A catalogue of some Books Printed for, and to be sold by Richard Davis in Oxford’ comprising five pages of catalogue and one blank at the end of the book. This is usually but not always present in the Oxford issue and, oddly, in a few copies of the London, but is generally absent from the latter. So far I have identified five variants of the two issues; the work deserves further bibliographical scrutiny. To add to the bibliographical confusion, the work was reprinted in octavo format the same year, with different pagination, and issued also both in Oxford and London by both Davis and Wells and Scott. This octavo edition is sometimes erroneously described as an ‘octavo issue’, but is in fact a second edition. Provenance:Jean Bailly M.D., with ownership inscription on p 1 dated 1674 and extensive marginal commentary in his hand, referring to his clinical experience, in the chapter dealing with encephalitis; signature ‘[?Jean-Baptiste] Bouthier de Rochefort’ on title and imprimatur leaf Wing W2827; Garrison and Morton (online) 1544, 4513, 4730, 4793, 4919, 4966; Hunter and Macalpine pp 187-192; Krivatsy 13015; Norman 2245 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Med Gustaf Elgenstiernas guldpressade pärmexlibris. Warmholtz Bibliotheca historica Sueo-Gothica 9470.

With a total of 54 etched illustrations and folding plates, numbered 1-53, skipping no. 28 as issued, with plate 1b included, plus one unnumbered plate. Decorative initials and tail-pieces, device to title-page. Side notes, extended index. Hardcover, bound in contemporary full cat's paw calf, spine with 6 compartments between raised bands, gilt decorated and lettered, red sprinkled edges; worn dried-out leather on spine neatly restored, gilt rubbed-off, extensive contemporary annotations in old hand to paste-downs. In a very good condition. Strong binding, fine and clean interior, all plates in excellent state of preservation. ~ The present Amsterdam 1672 edition, based on the Paris 1666 edition, was the last one to appear. In this famous work de Ville (1596-1656, possibly 1657 or 1658) concentrates on basic designs as starting point for detailed examination of practical questions, showing how established principles have to be adapted to the practical exigencies of any actual site. He discusses in detail matters such as length of line defense, length of flanks, casemates, size of the bastions, etc. Doing this, he quotes continually from existing practice, acknowledging this as a a matter of fact. Noteworthy, de Ville himself produced the fine, clear illustrations for the book.

Londini Scanorum (Lund), Adami Junghaus - Vitus Haberegger, 1672. 4to. Contemporary full calf with double blindstamped borders to boards. Spine restored and hinges weak. Otherwise very nice. Title-page dusty and with a little weakness in the paper, presumably from a removed book-plate on the blank part of verso. Last secion of leaves with some light worming to upper blank margin, far from affecting text. All in all a very nice and clean copy. Old owner's name to top of title-page. Title-page printed in red/black. (20), 1227,(9) pp. ¶ Scarce first edition of Pufendorf's magnum opus, one of the fundamental works of natural law. In this milestone work of political and legal thought, Pufendorf presents his system of universal law, which profoundly revised the natural law theories of Hobbes and Grotius. In his teaching, that the will of the state is but the sum of the individual wills that constitute it, he shows himself a precursor of Rousseau and of the "Social Contract"."It is a complete system of public, private and international law. Against Hobbes's view he contended that the state of nature was one of peace, not war, and heurged the view that international law... existed between all nations... [a work] of great importance" (David Walker, The Oxford Companion to Law)."In the 'De jure naturae et gentium' Pufendorf took up in great measure the theories of Grotius and sought to complete them by means of the doctrines of Hobbes and of his own ideas. His first important point was that natural law does not extend beyond the limits of this life and that it confines itself to regulating external acts. He disputed Hobbes's conception of the state of nature and concluded that the state of nature is not one of war but of peace. But this peace is feeble and insecure, and if something else does not come to its aid it can do very little for the preservation of mankind. As regards public law Pufendorf, while recognizing in the state (civitas) a moral person (persona moralis), teaches that the will of the state is but the sum of the individual wills that constitute it, and that this association explains the state. In this a priori conception, in which he scarcely gives proof of historical insight, he shows himself as one of the precursors of Rousseau and of the Contrat social. Pufendorf powerfully defends the idea that international law is not restricted to Christendom, but constitutes a common bond between all nations because all nations form part of humanity." He was impressed with the idea that life was a slow-burning flame, and he often pointed out the analogy between living processes and the burning of a candle. It was in the present tract, however that he gave special attention to the theme, insisting upon the term flamma vitalis (pp.105 et seq). In many places he approached the modern theory of oxidation" [Fulton]. While the book was in the press Boyle as an afterthought decided to add more material. This was to be be inserted in middle of sheets already printed and this has resulted in an interrupted sequence of gatherings with almost 200 pages introduced between leaves K1 and K2 and with the gathering x (the last of the of extra material) coming long before gathering P, the last gathering of the book proper. The book was reissued in 1673 with a cancelled title page dated for that year.
