SELDEN, John
E. Tyler, and R. Holt, for John Leigh. 1672 John Selden Titles of Honor Heraldry Genealogy Persia Greek Rome Islam RARE Most men s learning is nothing but History duly taken up. If I quote Tho. Aquinas for some Tenet, & believe it, because the school-men say so, that s but History: few men make themselves masters of the things they write or speak. John Selden, Table-Talk John Selden is generally considered England s first legal historian. He questioned all his contemporaries and their definition of history. He spent time trying to discover history by researching the past, more so than that of his colleagues. He claimed, as seen in the quote above, that men of knowledge did not learn from the past, nor did they seek to discover the past. Selden sought to change this. His book Titles of Honor is a history of world kingdoms and the rise and fall of their rulers, kings, and emperors. Published in 1684, this edition includes impressive in-text engravings of these royal figures along with descriptions of popes, kings of Islamic empires, European gothic counts, and English dukes and kings.
[Attributes: Hard Cover]

[WALDENSIANS].
Bibliografia Valdese 1672; STCN (1 copy); Tiele, Pamfletten 5035; WorldCat (3 copies); not in Knuttel. Rare copy of a pamphlet on the massacre of the Waldensians in Piedmont in 1655. It is probably a second edition as the title-pages mentions: "Jouxte la copie impriméé à Haerlem 1663", though no copies from this previous Haarlem edition are known. The Waldensians are a Christian movement with its origins in the later Middle Ages in France and they were persecuted as heretics from the 12th century onwards. From the early 17th century they were considered as early forerunners of the Reformation. In 1655 the Duke of Savoy commanded the Waldensians of Piedmont to attend Mass or leave in 20 days. The remaining Waldensians were massacred, causing indignation throughout Europe. Some waterstains in the upper margins; wrappers with slightly rubbed edges and spine restored with cello tape. Otherwise a good copy of this rare pamphlet on the Piedmont massacre.

Charles Wolseley was a 17th-century English politician who notably published apologetic literature defending Scripture. This treatise, 'The Reasonableness of Scripture Belief', includes Wolseley's attack on Thomas Hobbes' 'Leviathan'. This fine first edition is bound with Wolseley's attack on atheism, noting its fallacies and scripture references to help his defense. [Attributes: First Edition]

Leeuwekaart - Wilhelm Serlin, 1672
In 1662 Pufendorf was appointed to the first modern professorship in natural law (at the University of Heidelberg). In 1670 he became professor of natural law at the University of Lund in Sweden. An instant classic, De Jure Naturae et Gentium is his principal work and a landmark in the history of natural and international law. It proposed a thorough system of private, public, and international law based on natural law. Beginning with a consideration of fundamental legal ideas and their various divisions, Pufendorf proceeded to a discussion of the validity of customs, the doctrines of necessity and innate human reason. The work is significant in part because it developed principles introduced by Grotius and Hobbes. Unlike Hobbes, Pufendorf argued that peace, not war, was the st … [Click Below for Full Description]

Penn, William
[Andrew Sowle]: [London], 1672. First edition of William Penn's reply to Faldo and defense of his first work of Quaker theology: The Spirit of Truth Vindicated. Octavo, bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments, elaborate gilt tooling to the front and rear panels, rebacked. In near fine condition. Scarce. Penn wrote The Spirit of Truth Vindicated in 1671 in response to Henry Hedworth's attack on Fox, the founder of the Quaker Religious Society of Friends. In it, Penn defended Fox against Hedworth's charges of misquoting the scripture and concisely explained the Quaker's reliance upon the scriptures as an expression of the "True Spirit which guided humans through the Christ within". The work was swiftly attacked, in turn, by Faldo and he and Penn issued multiple replies to one another, this being Penn's first response to Faldo's initial attack. [Attributes: First Edition]

Edward Wettenhall
England: 1672. Overall fair, but pages clean and binding tight. A rare copy of Enter Into Thy Closet or A Method and Order for Private Devotion by Edward Wettenhall, 4th edition 1672. Since this copy is missing its title page and begins with the dedication, to Seth, Lord Bishop of Sarum, we consulted Cornell Library's website for information to identify the edition. We were able to conclude that this is the fourth, 1672 edition, the only edition with 447 pages (followed by an un-numbered Addendum), and a documented pagination error, whereby the page numbers skip from 408 to 431, while the text continues without any omission. (The last photo shows the title page of the 1666 first edition simply for reference.) Although the condition of the cover is rough, and the title page is missing, the inside pages are clean and the binding itself is tight, and most importantly there's no whiff of mustiness or mildew. Enter Into Thy Closet is a treatise on the necessity for privacy in prayer and meditation, as well as exhortations on fasting and other spiritual practices. It is a good example of 17th century Church of England devotional writing, and a difficult book to find outside of library rare book collections. I'm open to offers.

PUFENDORF, Samuel von
Cambridge: Joann. Hayes, 1672. 2nd Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (147 x 92 mm). [16], 350, [26] pp. Signatures: *8 A-Z8 2A4. Title printed in red and black, two woodcut initials and one woodcut illustration in text, general index at end. Contemporary blind ruled and blind stamped calf, hand-lettered red paper spine label (joints partly split, boards rubbed, upper board with small hole in leather, extremities worn, corners scuffed and bumped). Light mostly marginal browning and dust-soiling, very minor occasional spotting. Provenance: James Ellis (inscription on title and rear flyleaf). Very good copy. ---- Stintzing/Landsberg III/1. VERY RARE SECOND AND ENLARGED EDITION of the first of Pufendorf's three natural-legal works, a program study that already contains the author's entire doctrine. The importance of this work was rapidly realised. Both this Cambridge reprint and the The Hague first edition of 1660 were, for example, in John Locke's library. - Visit our website for additional images and information. Very Good.
