GREW, Nehemias.
[2 blank], [1], [1 blank], [4], 310; [1], [1 blank], [4], 108 pp.Second French translation of the first English edition of 1672, which was entitled The anatomy of vegetables begun by the English botanist, physician and microscopist Nehemiah Grew (1641-1712). The present edition is sometimes erroneously said to have been translated from that edition. Grew, together with Malphigi, is regarded as one of the founders of the science of plant anatomy. The Anatomie is especially notable for its descriptions of plant structure, but Grew also went further. He described the differences between stem and root and correctly hypothesized that the stamen, with its pollen, is the male sex organ and that the pistil corresponds to the sex organ of the female. Although this volume contains two texts on plants and their processes, it also contains the Recueil, written by Nehemias Grew, Robert Boyle and some other doctors and physicians. This text describes their reflections on the human body. All texts are printed at the same time: the quire signatures and page numbers are continuous. In good condition, only slightly rubbed on the back and with a tear of 5 cm in the engraved folding plate.l BMC (NH) II, p. 734 ("Wanting"); Pritzel 3554.

London: Printed by A. Maxwell, for Sa: Gellibrand..., 1672. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo, 140 x 70 mms., pp. [xx], 158 [159 blank 160 docket title, 161 - 166 blank (with loss of corners), including imprimatur leaf, with three blank leaves before imprimatur leaf, contemporary panelled shepskin; top and base of spine chipped, joints rubbed; no paste-down end-papers, but a good to very good copy, with two later 18th century owners' names on recto of imprimatur leaf, and some brief notes in a contemporary hand on the verso of the last leaf. The Presbyterian minister John Howe (1630 - 1705) came under the influence of the Cambridge Platonists as a student at Christ's College, Cambridge, but hewas not himself a Platonist. Later, Howe was admitted as a Bible clerk at Brasenose College, Oxford, where he graduated BA on 18 January 1650 and attained an MA in 1652. and was ordained as a Presbyterian in 1652. This is just one of more than 30 works that Howe published. "Howe was an extremely prolific writer, publishing, in addition to those mentioned above, some twenty-eight other works. Almost 200 further lectures and sermons were published posthumously and, after Calamy's edition of his collected works of 1724, several more multi-volume editions were published in the nineteenth century. Howe's writings have a consistent seriousness of tone; there are passages of sustained irony in his polemic but he is never frivolous. At once capable of relentless logic and deep feeling, he reveals an other-worldly fervour, and the abstraction of his writings is only rarely relieved by the me … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Cat Ouvaroff n°635.

SUETONIUS, Caius Tranquillus
London: for John Starkey, 1672. 1672 ENGLISH Suetonius Twelve Caesars Julius Caesar Caligula Nero ROME Portraits"Nothing is more unpredictable than the mob, nothing more obscure than public opinion, nothing more deceptive than the whole political system." ― Suetonius, 'The Twelve Caesars' Suetonius was a 1st-century Roman historian who is most remembered by his important set of biographies of twelve successive Roman rulers from Julius Caesar to Domitian. "The Lives of Twelve Caesars" or "De Vita Caesarum" is still considered one of the primary sources on Roman history and discusses important facets of the end of the Roman Republic."Twelve Caesars" covers the lives of Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellus, Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian, and is the first work to offer insights to some of the lesser-known aspects of these important Roman figures - such as Julius Caesar's struggle with epilepsy. The extent of what is culturally known about Caligula comes almost exclusively from Suetonius - little else was written about the sadistic ruler. Suetonius says of Caligula's reign:"So much for the Emperor; the rest of this history must deal with the Monster."This incredibly rare and valuable 1672 English edition of 'Twelve Caesars' includes 6 full-page portrait engravings by William Dolle.Item number: #10827Price: $950SUETONIUS, Caius TranquillusThe history of the twelve Cæsars, emperors of RomeLondon: Printed for John Starkey, 1672.Details: · Collation:o [28], 500o 6 engraved plates · References: Wing S 6147; ESTC R 28860; · … [Click Below for Full Description]

GALLEMART, Jean
Coloniae Agrippinae: viduam Joannis Busaei, 1672. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. The Council of Trent has long been one of the most important and foundational ecumenical councils of the Catholic Church and has been described by scholars as the epitome of the Counter-Reformation. It was prompted out of issues concerning heresy committed by Protestant doctrine based on justification, salvation, and most famously the Biblical canon. Jean Gallemart's account of the council provides details concerning liturgical and theological discussions, the reformation, the sacraments, the progression of sessions, and notable orations given. It is also paired with the Prohibited Books Index The 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum' or Prohibited Books Index is the complete list of books that have been banned for heresy or morality by the Catholic Church. First established in 1557, this book was recognized as an official list and no Catholics were permitted to possess or even read books from this list.

Coloniae Agrippinae: viduam Joannis Busaei, 1672. 1672 Prohibited Book Index & Catholic Council Trent Index Librorum ProhibitorumThe Council of Trent has long been one of the most important and foundational ecumenical councils of the Catholic Church and has been described by scholars as the epitome of the Counter-Reformation. It is also paired with the Prohibited Books IndexThe 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum' or Prohibited Books Index is the complete list of books that have been banned for heresy or morality by the Catholic Church. First established in 1557, this book was recognized as an official list and no Catholics were permitted to possess or even read books from this list.Item number: #10140Price: $599GALLEMART, JeanSacrosanctum concilium Tridentinum Additis declarationibuscardinalium, ex ultima recognitione Joannis Gallemart et citationibusColoniae Agrippinae, Apud viduam Joannis Busaei, 1672.Details: · Collation: Complete with all pageso [40], 651, [131]· Language: Latin· Binding: Vellum; tight & secure· Size: ~7in X 4.5in (18cm x 12cm)· Rare and desirableOur Guarantee:Very Fast. Dorso a 4 nervi. Qualche lieve difetto. [Click Below for Full Description]

MENGOLI, Pietro
Bologna: per l herede del Benacci, 1672. First edition, very rare, of this continuation of Mengoli's most important work, 'Geometriae Speciosae Elementa' (1659), in which Mengoli "set up the basic rules of the calculus thirty years before Newton and Leibniz" (MacTutor). In the present work, Mengoli uses the techniques he developed in the 'Geometriae' to solve the problem of the quadrature of the circle. Mengoli explains that he had found the quadrature of the circle in 1660, but had not published it because he only wanted to publish the mathematics he needed "to explain natural events." "It has been known since the 1920s that Leibniz in April 1676 finally had the opportunity to study Mengoli's book 'Circolo' (1672) and that he made extensive excerpts from this work . . . In 'Arithmetica infinitorum et interpolationum figuris applicata', Leibniz essentially discusses the triangulat tables of Mengoli (3-10), and tries to find a method for the computation of the partial sums of the harmonic series . . . he was able to recognize that Mengoli had already been in possession of the harmonic triangle, used by Leibniz . . . since the end of 1672" (Goethe et al, G.W. Leibniz, Interrelations between Mathematics and Philosophy (2015), 127-130). The most original student of Bonaventura Cavalieri, Mengoli (1625-86) was familiar with his master's theory of indivisibles but wished to develop a method of solving problems of quadratures in an algebraic way. "In his work 'Geometriae,' algebra and geometry are used in complementary ways in the investigation of quadrature problems. At the begin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Varenius, Bernardus (Isaac Newton Ed.)
Joann Hayes, Cantabrigia (Cambridge), 1672. A very good copy of the first edition of Isaac Newton's first published work. A sound copy, bound in contemporary calf, blind stamped, re-spined in matched calf by Blair Jeary, Stamford, with black leather title labels. Title page printed in two colour with engraved device. 511pp + 1p binder's instruction + 5 folding plates as called for. A very nice copy of this scarce edition, some browning to paper as might be expected but overall clean and crisp. The inside of front board bears the early heraldic bookplate of Thomas Rutt. Newton published this himself, in it Varen discusses the general principles of geography as a scientific subject using the knowledge of the time. This includes mathematical facts about the dimensions and motions of the earth, as well as their practical applications in navigation and map-making. Bernhard Varens (Bernhardus Varenius -1622-1650) from German Hitzacker, studied to become a physician. The Geographia generalis. still made an important impact and was translated and printed well into the 1700s. Originally published in Amsterdam by L. Elzevir in 1650 and 1649 respectively. The first work is his most known, here edited and improved by Isaac Newton for this Cambridge edition. 1672. [Click Below for Full Description]

Amsterdam: Apud Danielem Elsevirium [Elzevir], 1672. 3rd Edition. Very Good. Amsterdam, Apud Danielem Elsevirium [Elzevir], 1672 [third edition] ('Editio nova, libro quarto auctior, & sparsim multi in locis emendatior')/ 1641. Small octavo, [xvi], 392 pages with a woodcut printer's device on the title page, occasional head- and tail-pieces and woodcut initials, an additional engraved pictorial title page, a portrait of the author, 18 full-page engravings (numbered I-XVIII), an unnumbered full-page engraving (page 178) and an in-text engraved illustration (on page 247). The plates include various diseased organs and anatomical illustrations, spina bifida, a chimpanzee ('Homo sylvestris - Orang-outang'), a narwhal, and two different plates of siamese twins. Contemporary full vellum with the author and title inscribed neatly in ink on the spine; vellum slightly rubbed and marked, with the spine unevenly discoloured; underlining in ink on 35 pages (in many instances just a word or two, and nowhere is it offensive to our eyes); contemporary relevant annotations in ink in a neat and tiny script to 14 pages (six of which also have some underlining); some offsetting and occasional light marks and foxing; trifling signs of use and age; pastedowns no longer pasted down, and the front one has been treated as the flyleaf, on the recto of which later ownership details and a bookplate have been placed; overall an excellent copy. Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674) was a Dutch surgeon and mayor of Amsterdam. The first edition of this work was published in 1641. Garrison-Morton 3737 describes the … [Click Below for Full Description]
