Losa, Francisco
Madrid: Bernardo Hervada / Antonio Francisco de Zafra, 1674 / 1678. 19.5 x 14.5cm, ff [6], [116]; [16], pp 121, ff [3]. Extra-illustrated by a portrait engraving of Lopez taken from another source and pasted on the verso of the title page, and lovingly, if crudely, colored at some remote time. Two volumes bound as one: note that the first volume is paginated by leaf, so there are 276 pages, all in two columns. Lopez (1542 - 96) was an interesting figure: born in Spain, rumored to be a natural (i.e. illegitimate) son of Phillip II, though he was a page in the court of this king. He was well-educated in arts and sciences, and came to Mexico at the age of 20, living intermittently as a hermit and monk. For some time no one knew what to make of him, as he did not belong to any religious order: the natives, even the unconquered Chichimecas thought he was perhaps a brujo (witch),but revered him and helped him construct a hermitage; the Inquisition suspected he was some kind of Lutheran heretic. He overcame all suspicion over time, and became a venerated personality. He was revered by F. Losa, his biographer and close friend, who left his parish to go live with Lopez as a hermit outside of Mexico City in a place called Santa Fe. Lopez ended his days there, uniforly mourned as a saint throughout Mexico. At one point in his life he became seriously ill from dysentery and entered the hospital de Huaxtepec, which had an extensive herbal garden which had existed from Aztec times, and of which he became the keeper and dispenser. His book Tesoro de la Medicina was the basic guide for … [Click Below for Full Description]

LA FONTAINE, Jean de.
[1 blank], [1], 168 pp.Very rare second issue, consisting of the first edition of 1674 with a new-title page, of a new collection of popular tales by Jean de la Fontaine (1621-695), writer of popular fables and stories. The collection of tales in this book is the fourth part of the so-called Contes & Nouvelles (first editions published between 1665-1674), a collection of tales written by Jean de la Fontaine. The printing of this series, especially of this fourth part, was not easy. However Jean de la Fontaine had already received royal privileges for the three earlier parts, he could not obtain a privilege for this fourth collection of tales. Therefore he had to publish this fourth part of Contes & Nouvelles clandestinely. The first edition of this work was published in 1674 with the imprint of Gaspard Migeon at Mons (a Walloon city in Belgium), who was a famous Jansenist printer. Although the book was published outside Paris, it was not printed at Mons. Probably the first edition of this Nouveaux contes was printed at Reims by Multeau or at Châlons by Bouchard. Unfortunately this edition was seized and on 5 April 1675 a verdict was issued: because Jean de La Fontaine lacked a privilege for publishing the book and because they suspected him from endangering the good morals and inspiring ‘libertinage', a philosophy that argued for complete individual freedom. Jean de la Fontaine no longer took the risk: to avoid further harassment, he turned to The Netherlands for publishing his fourth part of tales. Although we can not really call it ‘publishing': he re-issued his stock fro … [Click Below for Full Description]

RAMEAU, Pierre.
XXIV, 272 pp.First edition of one of the best and most influential dancing manuals of all time, by the famous French dancing master Pierre Rameau (1674-1748). It was reissued with new title-pages in 1734 and 1748 and translated into English in 1728 by the dancing master John Essex (ca. 1680-1744) under the title The dancing master: or, The art of dancing explained. Rameau, a leading dancing master in his day, is now best known for his present manual, one of the most important primary sources for of French Baroque dance and for the study and reconstruction of eighteenth-century dance technique in general. "One of the most important books in the history of dance literature" with "the clearest and most detailed descriptions ... of the structure and execution of the basic steps used in social and theatrical dance" (O'Brian Malkin quoting Fletcher and Hilton).Part one carefully describes and illustrates the appropriate manner of walking, foot positions, bows and a large vocabulary of dance steps, and for the first time clearly sets down the five basic positions of the feet. Part two covers the use of arms while dancing. The manual is also important for the study of the invention and introduction of a dance notation system in the early 18th century, one of the most fascinating aspects in the development of French Baroque dance. Rameau describes how to dance the Minuet: slow and pompous, a resplendently dressed assemblage would step and point with grace and style. It is to be performed with a staccato repetition of eight notes, for pointing of toes and for delicate movements. The … [Click Below for Full Description]

DANREITER, Franz Anton.
[1], 25; [1], 20, [1], 22; 12 engraved ll.A remarkable volume containing three rare print series on architecture, architectural ornament and garden ornament, all published by the important Augsburg engraver and print publisher Johann Andreas Pfeffel the elder (1674-1748).Ad 1: First and only edition of a very rare ornamental garden pattern book (part 2 is especially rare) by the recently appointed court gardener and inspector of the Salzburg gardens, Franz Anton Danreiter (1695-1760). In 1728 Danreiter was appointed court gardener and inspector to related buildings by the ducal bishop of Salzburg. He translated Dezallier's La theorie et la pratique du jardinage into German, helping introduce French garden design to German-speaking countries. His own designs in the present work show more than 100 ornamental and fanciful planting patterns on 42 plates, many including fountains. This was his first and rarest model book with garden plans for parterres. They show that far from endlessly repeating the strict symmetrical canon of French Baroque garden design, Danreiter developed a never-ending variety of ornamental designs which herald the German rococo.Ad 2: First edition of Johann David Steingruber's first published architectural book, showing working drawings with plans, elevations and sections of town houses and palaces, mostly with scales. It includes several designs for a garden pavilion in an aristocratic park, lavish town houses for the haute bourgeois, and finally a ducal residence. Each design is shown in as much detail as possible. The grander houses are shown including … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAMBRECHTSEN, Nicolaas Cornelis.
[6], 102, [2 blank] pp.First edition of Lambrecht's account of the Dutch colony in America up to its cession to England in 1674, as well as an account of the fate of the Dutch settlers after the British takeover. It covers the discovery and exploration of the regions around present-day New York, the Dutch relations with the English colonies in Virginia and Massachusetts Bay, and the English takeover. New York was beginning to establish itself as America's leading city in the early nineteenth century, and a growing interest in its history made the history of the Dutch colony topical. The folding map, entitled "Kaart van Nieuw-Nederland" combines an up-to-date cartographic image based on Aaron Arrowsmith's 1804 Map of America, with historical data from maps in Arent Roggeveen's 1675 sea atlas and Arnoldus Montanus's 1671 atlas of America. In 1817 Lambrechtsen (1752-1823) was made an honorary member of the New York Historical Society, which published an English translation of his book in 1841.With occasional minor foxing, but otherwise in fine condition with the final integral blank leaf and virtually untrimmed. The sprinkled paper wrappers, covering only the sides, remain in very good condition, but the spine retains only tattered parts of the original paper spine with the printed title, leaving the sewing and the folds of the quires partly visible. A fascinating Dutch history of Dutch America.l Muller, America 1086; Sabin 38745.

Palma Cayet Pierre Victor
Clement Malassis, 1674. Histoire prodigieuse et lamentable de Jean Fauste, grand Magicien, Avec son Testament, Et sa vie espouvantable. Amsterdam, Chez Clement Malassis, 1674. 222 pages et 3 ff. (table). [Click Below for Full Description]

MONLUC, Blaise, Seigneur de.
The commentaries of Messire Blaize de Montluc, Mareschal of France.London, Andrew Clark for Henry Brome, 1674. Folio. With engraved frontispiece full-length portrait of the author. Contemporary blind-tooled mottled calf. Expertly rebacked in similar blind-tooled calf. [18], "404" [= 400], [12] pp. plus engr. frontispiece. First English edition of Blaise de Monluc's own detailed account of his career, beginning as a foot-soldier and finally becoming Marshal of France, providing a military history of France from 1521 to 1576. He also provides "divers instructions" for anyone wishing to bear arms with "any eminent degree of honor" and "prudently" fight in wars. It therefore also serves as a practical handbook of military techniques and tactics. The present translation is by Charles Cotton (1630-1697), an English poet who dedicated the work to Philip, Earl of Chesterfield and Lord Stanhope, and also contributed one of the preliminary verses. Blaise de Monluc (1501-1577) began his career as an archer and foot soldier in the reign of King Francois I (1494-1547), who played a major role in bringing Renaissance culture and technical knowledge to France, inaugurating its golden age. With two engraved bookplates. With a couple small abrasions on the frontispiece, but otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor defects. The binding has been rebacked and the boards show some restorations. A colourful and insightful account of military actions, tactics and techniques in Renaissance France. ESTC R37642; Wing M2506; cf. Sloos, Warfare and the age of printing 03051.

Small folio (28.5 x 19 cm). With engraved frontispiece and 6 large engraved folding plates by Romeyn de Hooghe (plate size ca. 23 x 35 cm). Contemporary vellum. 36 pp. Rare first edition, with fine emblematic plates, illustrating the injustice and cruelty of the war waged by Louis XIV of France against the free and independent Dutch Republic. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was unquestionably the most gifted and the most prolific Dutch book illustrator of the second half of the 17th century. His work displays the political grandeur and disasters of war in the Dutch Republic, including the disastrous year 1672, depicted dramatically and with great splendour. The large plates are richly designed and full of intricate emblems and allegories, fully explained in the accompanying text; an emblematic poem is added to each plate. With manuscript annotation in ink on pastedown. Slightly browned throughout with some thumbed margins, edges of frontispiece slightly frayed, otherwise in very good condition. With engraved illustrated title-page.With: (2) SCHRÖDER, Johan (and others?). [Pharmacological recipes in manuscript].[Westfalen?, ca. 1674]. A manuscript pharmacopoeia in German, written in dark brown ink on paper, in a Latin hand with gothic influences. 2 works in 1 volume. Narrow 8vo (18 x 9.5 cm). Contemporary vellum. [12], 394 (lacking pp. 169-170), [6]; [2 blank], 189, [1 blank] pp. Very rare second edition, extensively revised, of a practical "home and field apothecary", bound with an extensive manuscript pharmacopoeia containing hundreds of medicinal recipes. The manuscript is in several hands, but one appears to match Johan Schröder's 1674 owner's inscription in the Gogler, which notes that he is a surgeon, so he is probably at least in part the author/compiler. We do not know whether the author is related to Johann Schroeder (1600-1664), born in Westfalen, author of Phamacopoeia medico-chymica sive thesarus pharmacologicus (Ulm, 1641). Little is known about Carl de Gogler. His book is arranged in nine chapters, each devoted to a different subject, plus an appendix on bloodletting. The subjects include various parts of the body (1-4, 8), women and children (5), kinds of ailments (6-7) and kinds of medicine (9). With engraved frontispiece by Melchior Küsell after J. M. Tobrias and an extra frontispiece by the same engraver bound in after page 512. Contemporary vellum with two clasps. [16], 627, [13] pp. Second German edition of the life of St Francis Xavier by Torsellini. The author brought together an enormous number of anecdotes about Xavier that had never been published before, and gives considerable detail about his travels in India, the East Indies, China and Japan from 1541 to his death in 1552, and his founding of the Society of Jesus with Loyola and the Jesuit mission in Japan.Torsellini (1544-1599), who also edited Xavier's letters, uncritically accepts the stories that had been passed on by word of mouth for the 42 years since Xavier's death, greatly expanding the number and nature of his miracles, showing him expelling devils, stilling tempests, raising four people from the dead, etc., but he was probably the last biographer to troll new sources of information until modern times. Those who followed merely repeated his stories in greatly exaggerated form, for example having him raise 14 people from the dead! Manuscript inscriptions on title-page and closing paste-down.

Contemporary vellum. 36 pp. Rare first edition, with fine emblematic plates, illustrating the injustice and cruelty of the war waged by Louis XIV of France against the free and independent Dutch Republic. MALEBRANCHE, Nicolas
Paris: André Pralard, 1674. 1674 1ed Malebranche Philosophy Search of Truth John Locke Influence Metaphysics"Just as our eyes need light in order to see, our minds need ideas in order to conceive." - Nicolas Malebranche A rare edition of Malebranche's principal and most important work - "Concerning the Search after Truth". This book would lay the foundation for all of Malebranche's philosophical ideas and reputation. He primarily focused on human error and the existence of God within human nature. This edition also includes his "Laws of Communication" and his responses to Regis. This work was written with the sole purpose of generalizing, clarifying, and commenting on God's miracles and actions toward man. The book was eventually placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1690 after disputes over its contents could not be settled. John Locke is known to have described Malebranche as "an acute and ingenious author" but obviously, not everyone saw his work in such light. BOYLE, Robert.
1674. 8vo, pp. [6], 51, [3], 6, [2], 5, [3], 11, [3] 39, [3], 5, [3], 11, [3], 27, [3], 14, without the blank A1; a little dampstained throughout in upper fore-margins (more prominent in places), with occcasional dust-soiling; First edition, second state of the title-page, dated 1674: several of the tracts have title-pages dated 1673, and the copy presented by Boyle to the Royal Society on 13 November 1673 has a variant of the main titlepage dated 1673. A work consisting of 10 tracts describing Boyle's work in thermodynamics, the desalination of sea water, and experiments with a new hygrometer. The first four tracts are sequels to his Experimental history of cold (1665); they describe experiments on the expansive force of freezing water and various freezing mixtures measured with spirit thermometers. The next tract is the one from which the volume takes its title, 'Observations and experiments about the saltness of the sea.' Boyle was very interested in the practical problems of desalination and much of this tract describes experiments to discover a practical method which could be used at sea. As a result of this piece Boyle became involved in a long correspondence, some of which was printed in Fitzgerald's Saltwater sweetened (1683). The next tract is 'Relations about the bottom of the sea,' followed by 'Of the natural and preternatural state of bodies'. The three final tracts describe experiments and observations made with Boyle's hygrometer. This used a sponge suspended from one arm of a balance, an arrangement he preferred to the more common hygrometers pioneered by the … [Click Below for Full Description]

WEMYS, Thomas
London, printed for Thomas Dring, at the Harrow, over against the Inner Temple-gate, in Fleet-street. 1674. 12mo., (24) + 164pp., complete with the initial imprimatur leaf (A1), wormtracks affect lower margins throughout, occasionally with loss of a single letter of text, small tear in margin of leaf F4 with loss of single letter on recto, contemporary sheep, unlettered, spine and corners rather worn but sound. From the 17th century library of John Rawlett with his signature> ('Jo Rawlet') on front free endpaper, and the shelf mark 'N61' on tag affixed to lower board. First and only edition. A theological essay by the vicar of Whittingham in Northumberland, dedicated to Guy Carleton, Bishop of Bristol. The provenance of this copy is of some note. John Rawlet (or Rawlett), 1642-86, was the famous Tamworth nonconformist preacher and poet. He was closely associated with Richard Baxter, with whose help he became a writer on theology, their correspondence still being extant. At his death in 1686, Rawlet bequeathed his library of 912 volumes to the town of Tamworth for the use of scholars, provided that a public library for their use could be established, and a room was set aside in an almshouse in the town, though without suitable security or care. The library 'contained mainly theology, but also classical and English literature and history, and an imperfect medieval MS Bible, illuminated. It was housed in Guy's Almshouses until 1868 and was then moved to the Grammar School. In 1932 the Trustees of Rawlet's Charity, with the consent of the Charity Commissioners, sold the librar … [Click Below for Full Description]
