BLOUIN DE LA PIQUETIÈRRE, Michel. 1622-1697
Amsterdam: s.n., 1674. Contemporary marbled wrappers (defective), manuscript paper spine label, uncut. Signature of the colorful collector Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun (1655-1716). I quote Ian Jackson (in part): "The book chronicles the separation of the Kingdom of Portugal from the Spanish monarchy.... After the failure of Monmouth's Rebellion, 1685, Fletcher had escaped to Spain, through which (after a brief imprisonment) he had traveled, collecting books as he went...[this] would have provided obvious source material for Fletcher's Machiavellian Discorso delle cose di Spagna ('Napoli', i.e. Edinburgh, 1698).... So ardent a patriot, however, could hardly have written of Portugal, Spain and Naples without having previously made a mental transposition of those places to Scotland, England and Edinburgh". J Evelyn
ont> T R for Benj Tooke : London, 1674 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. An excellent copy of the first edition of this history of the Dutch and the English conflict over the sovereignty of the seas. Evelyn discusses labour and industry in this work, and how humans cannot live alone on natural endowments. It gives an account of the discovery of America by Columbus, and the Venetian Zeno. Following from this there are explorations of subsequent voyages by Amerigo, Vespucci and John Cabot. In addition to the exploits of Drake, Raleigh, Hawkins, Cavendish and Frobisher. Of industry, Evelyn explores the American plantations, fishery, whale fisheries and many more. Contemporary ownership inscription in a stylised Gothic hand to the front pastedown of Charles du Bois the English botanist and treasurer of the East India Company (bap. 1658-1740). With the signatures: A4, B-I8, K4. From the estate of John Lawson (1932-2019) a British antiquarian bookseller whose collection was vast. With the scarce errata and advertisement leaves. ESTC R8611; Keynes 92; Kress 1358; Sabin 23028; Wing E3504. Charles II commanded Evelyn to write a history of the Dutch War, which he eventually abandoned. However, from the ashes emerged this important work, which scholar Clapham credits, alongside Temple's work of the same year, as marking the beginning of economic history. Upon its publication the Dutch were offended by this work and demanded its suppression. The King agreed, though congratulated Evelyn in private. A very bright copy of this work. (Oxford): Theatro Sheldoniano, 1674. (Oxford) Theatro Sheldoniano, 1674. "Edizione originale". Così Moncada Lo Giudice “Una biblioteca siciliana”, 259. Cfr. anche Mira,I, p. 111: “Raro” - Nissen,179 - Pritzel,859 - Brunet,I,1021, “Paolo Boccone (in religione frate Silvio) nacque a Palermo nel 1633 da famiglia originaria di Savona; dopo aver fatto i suoi studi letterari si diede a quelli della storia naturale pei quali aveva somma tendenza. Rose of Leith inside front cover; early inscription in Greek in upper margin of title. FIRST EDITION. Read at a meeting of the Royal Society, this remarkable and far-seeing little book is a cry for the scientific use of mathematics and the application of mathematics to human affairs, written 'in a way which the meanest Member of adult Mankind is capable of understanding' (p. viii). Actually two works in one, the first is concerned with the quadratic relationship which was proposed by Galileo to determine the flexure of a beam such that flexural resistance is proportional to the width of the section, to the square of its depth and inversely to its length. He also gives a discussion of models and modelling theory and its application to the size of ships and their sails, which again owes its allegiance to Galileo who discussed model theory in the first day of the Discorsi. Blaise de Montluc was a 16th-century Marshal of France whose fame comes solely from his 'Commentaries'. In this book, Montluc describes his life-long service to the French military - a book that was called the 'soldier's Bible' by King Henry IV. Historically speaking, this book is one of the best references to the development of the French infantry firearm, even though Montluc himself was displeased at how it changed over time. This first English edition of 'Commentaries of Messire Blaize de Montluc' was translated out of French into English by Charles Cotton. [Attributes: First Edition]

London, Printed by T.R. and N.T. for Moses Pitt at the Angell in St Pauls Church-yard, 1674. FIRST EDITION. 4to, pp. [iv], 30. [1] errata, [1] blank; with woodcut headpieces; some browning and light dustsoiling; in recent marbled wrappers. Inspired by Lucas Jansse's La Messe trouve dans l'Escriture (1652), this satire reflects the efforts made by certain Catholic theologians in the seventeenth century to prove a biblical basis for the celebration of Mass. The Pope, when asked by the Cardinal to explain his good spirits, replies that 'Pope Alexander the 6th: was over-joyed to see that in his days such a noted and an excellent part of the World as is America, was found out; I have far more reason to rejoyce because that in my days things of greater concernment that relate to Heaven and Happiness have been searcht out, and happily discovered; the Holy Mass is found to be hid in a corner of holy Scripture. The Mass in holy Scripture! quoth the Cardinall full of admiration, how can that be?' And so we are told the story of Father Patrick, a Burgundian priest ministering among the 'English Hereticks', who found, in a Louvain translation into French in 1664, that Acts 13, verse 2 speaks of the Apostles 'saying Mass to the Lord; Although this Translation be in French, it is no less useful to England, for that Nation naturally loves, admires, and embraces whatsoever appears to them in a French garb and countenance let it be never so rediculous'. Patrick is initially feted for this discovery, but ends the book in disgrace. The final sentence is a warning to the reader to 'take hee … [Click Below for Full Description]
