1674 Gottfried Historical Chronica Creation Persia ROME Merian Illustrated War

Franckfurt am Main : Matth. Merianum, 1674. - 1674 Gottfried Historical Chronica Creation Persia ROME Merian Illustrated War Johann Ludwig Gottfried was an early 17th-century German theologian and author. He is most remembered for his monumental work ‘Historical Chronical.’ While he also edited and paraphrased important works such as Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses,’ ‘Chronicle’ was by far his most extensive and time consuming piece. In fact, each portion was so popular at release that the work was continued beyond Gottfried’s death by Abelin. ‘Chronica’ was the most comprehensive book of world events which included human history fused with ancient myths which were encompassed within the timeline of the Bible. Gottfried sought to combine pagan histories with holy and divine histories and did so beginning with Creation, touching on important kingdoms – Assyria, Persia, Macedonia, and Rome. The introduction by Gottfried himself states how his intention was to distinguish history from stories: “Because in all histories, sacred and secular, the accurate and specific listing of dates and years is very important, without which histories are as if lifeless and become like fables thus I have sought to do my best in this matter so that readers may know properly in which year each story took place.” (Varwig 2) This work is beautifully illustrated with incredible plates by Merian, which the Gentleman’s Magazine refers to as ‘the most remarkable transactions in the world.’ Illustrations include Adam and Even in the Garden of Eden, battle scenes with self-mutilation and suicide, a city view of Ostend, varieties of birds from around the world, and a map of the known world.       Theatro Sheldoniano, 1674. "Edizione originale". Receipt issued in the name of 'madam Ellen Gwin' by her steward Thomas Groundes.

9th March /5 1674 - manuscript in ink on paper, approx.110 x 190 mm, cut from a larger sheet, 7 lines, top outer and lower inner corners torn but without loss of text, a little browned, laid down on paper and tipped onto an album leaf . 'The few letters by Nell in existence, though signed by herself E. G., were all written by others and undoubtedly she could barely write' (ODNB). This receipt then, made out in her name (or conceivably her mother's) is about as close to her as an autograph collector is likely to get. It reads: 'Recd. then of madam Ellen Gwin at ye hands of Tho. Groundes the sum of seven pounds eight shillings and six pence in full for 10. thousands of Beere Billes this day delivered at mads Gwins house for ye use of my father Christopher Trusse, I say recd. by me Samuel Horwood.' In the bottom left hand corner there is a calculation, which seems to show a discount. 'Thomas Groundes, [Nel's] faithful steward, took care of the household routine and saw to it that the larder and cellar were stocked [the latter well stocked to judge by this receipt], the horses groomed, and the house kept in repair. He scrutinized all bills for services and supplies, objecting to excessive charges, and sometimes refusing to pay until a bill was reduced. He was careful to have every tradesman sign a receipt according to a conventional formula [as per our document] .' (J.H. Wilson, Nel Gwyn, Royal Mistress). In 1674 Nell's pension was £4,000. Much more was lavished on her in revenues and property. (plus VAT in the EU)

Paradise Lost. A Poem in Twelve Books.

      S. Simmons, London 1674 - Rare Second edition of Milton's masterpiece. Octavo, with portrait frontispiece, contemporary calf, rebacked, original marbled edges. In very good condition with some toning to the text, contemporary name. First published in 1667, "Paradise Lost is generally conceded to be one of the greatest poems in the English language; and there is no religious epic in English which measures up to Milton's masterpiece. Milton performed an artist's service to his God" (Magill, 511, 515). The writer and critic Samuel Johnson wrote that Paradise Lost shows off "[Milton's] peculiar power to astonish" and that "[Milton] seems to have been well acquainted with his own genius, and to know what it was that Nature had bestowed upon him more bountifully than upon others: the power of displaying the vast, illuminating the splendid, enforcing the awful, darkening the gloomy, and aggravating the dreadful."          ARTICULI PACIS & AMICITIAE, INTER...CAROLUM II...ET CELSOS AC PRAEPOTENTES DOMINOS ORDINES GENERALES FOEDERATARUM BELGII PROVINCIARUM...

London, 1674. [2],12pp. Small quarto. Modern three quarter calf and cloth, spine gilt. About fine. The First British printing of the Treaty of Westminster, ending the Third Dutch War. The Dutch, beset by enemies on all sides, were forced to make trading concessions throughout the world, and to again surrender New York, which they had retaken. This is the final passage of New York into British hands. The treaty effectively eliminated the Dutch threat to British colonization of the mid-Atlantic states, and meant that in the future the French would be the main challenger to British hegemony in North America. The fifth article provides for the removal of British settlers from Surinam. This is the official Latin text, apparently preceding an English- language printing of the treaty and is quite scarce, with EUROPEAN AMERICANA locating only four copies. DAVENPORT 69.          Natural History of the Passions.

[London]: In the Savoy, Printed by T. N. for James Magnes in Russell-Street, 1674. First edition.. Homemade repair of a calf patch at the head of the spine in the style of an earlier repair, with a recent red morocco label to the spine; some occasional damp-staining and some rubbing and wear; a very good to good copy.. 8vo, contemporary sheep, [48], 188 pages. From the royalist physician and neo-Epicurean Walter Charleton (1619-1707), an important work engaging in part with Descartes and Hobbes, on the relationship between emotions and healthóor as Charleton has it here, ìthough it be undoubtedly true, that the Reasonable Soul hath her intellectual Delights and Disquiets apart, such as are proper to her simple and spiritual nature: yet is it no less true, that those other Delights and Disquiets that are common to her with the Body, depend upon the affections.î Once thought to be based on J.F. Senaultís De líusage des passions (1641), this is instead an original English work; see R. A. Hunter and E. Cuttler, ìWalter Charletonís Natural History of the Passions (1674) and J. F. Senaultís The Use of the Passions (1649): A case of mistaken identity,î Journal of the History of Medicine and the Allied Sciences, vol. 13, 1958, and Emily Booth, ìA Subtle and Mysterious Machineî: The Medical World of Walter Charleton (1619-1707), Dordrecht: Springer, 2005. Wing C-3684A. The two terminal blanks appear here possibly to be employed as the rear paste-down and free endpaper. Contemporary signature of James Twigg, ìhis Bookî across the head of the title page.

In 16mo; pp.12n.nn., 633, 3n.nn. Lo Cunto de li Cunte ebbe grande influenza in tutta Europa su scrittori come C. Brentano, i fratelli Grimm, Perrault, Carlo Gozzi, Wieland. Pironti, Editori francesi in Napoli, pag.87.
