MAZOT
A Paris: 1653.

1653. Emblemata Sacra, e praecipius utriusque ..... Petro vander Burgio ...... Johanne Philippi Schabaelie, anno 1653 By Hendrik Jansen Barrefelt (called Hiel). [N.pl.]: Iohanne Phlippi Schabaelie. 4to: Oblong. [25 sheets text], [100 plates] pp. Half leather in slipcase. 19th century half morocco over marbled boards. The spiritual ideas of Heil were expressed in the fine series of engravings designed by Pieter van der Borcht. The plates inspired the remonstrants and liberal protestants of the Dutch Republic like Michel Colin (i.e. Michiel Colijn) who was born in Antwerp and settled in Amsterdam as a publisher and bookseller in 1608. A smaller version of the Bible was first printed by Colin in Dutch in 1613. Colin published several verions of this work,in varying formats and plates. The verses were done by Petrus Sellius of Nijmegen. Later an edition was published by Claes Jansz. Visscher. In 1653 the van der Borcht engravings were incorporated in a print bible by Johanne Philippi Schabaelie: 'Den Grooten Emblemata Sacra', which contained over 300 engravings. But it is known that bibles were also printed to order. This specific edition contains the 100 engravings by van der Borcht, the title page and text pages. [16], 543 [1] pp., half-title, woodcut publisher's device on title, woodcut diagrams in text, historiated woodcut initials, woodcut head- and tailpieces, some mispaginations. RARE SECOND ENLARGED EDITION, of Cavalieri's principal work on the differential calculus. Cavalieri started to write it as early as 1626 which is known from a letter by him to Galilei. The book was first printed in 1635, but the present edition is much corrected and enlarged by pieces omitted in the 1635 edition. The expression "indivisibilia" is very old; it was used by Brad Wardine, but only through Cavalieri it gained significance. The book is divided into seven parts, Cavalieri's law on the figures and bodies is developed in the second part. John Brinsley
Thomas Maxey. The Mystical Brazen Serpent with the Magnetical Virtue 1653 VERY RARE ANTIQUE. This book was found with many other in an old NJ barn. For its age, the book is in a really beautiful shape. There is no evidence of foxing nor bookworms. The book is very unique for the reason being that is has an inscription on the front from Reverend John Nelson, which is actually Reverend John Nelson Darby that usually left the Darby off the end of his name because he was proud that he was named after his Godfather, Lord Nelson. Reverend Nelson was the founder of the Exclusive Brethren, and is considered to be the father of modern Dispensationalism and Futurism. When he did a 11 hour lecture tour in Geneva in 1840 he signed copies of various influential books to a few people, which this one went to Amos Wheeler of New Hampshire that went to see the Reverend. In common practice, signed the book on the last page to show he had finished reading the entire book. This a is a beautiful book and rare signed that would be a proud addition to any collectors library.

La Boullaye-Le-Gouz, Francois de.
Paris, Francois Clousier, 1653. 4to. (16), 540, (10), (2 blank) pp. With a woodcut and an engraved author's portrait, 34 woodcut illustrations in text, including several full-page, and some woodcut initals, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine. Rare first edition of a travelogue by the French explorer, merchant and diplomat François de la Boullaye-Le Gouz (ca.1610-1669). The largest part of the book deals with his travels through the Midde East and India, while a smaller parts treats Le Gouz's travels through Europe. In 1643 he travelled the Middle East under the name Ibrahim Beg, visiting Syria, Palestine, Persia, Egypt, Anatolia and Armenia."Like so many European travellers in the east he adopted oriental clothes and an oriental name . Unlike most European travellers to the east, however, La Boullaye-Le Gouz continued to wear his Persian clothes in his return to France and was consequently regarded as something of a curio" (Hamilton). A few years later he was send by the French king with an embassy to the Mogul emperor Shah Jahan, where he met and became great friends with the Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes (1591-1660). La Boullaye-Le Gouz describes the routes he takes, the cities he visits and the people he meets along the way, with frequent observations on religion, natural history and commerce. The illustrations show various Indian deities, some city views or buildings, Indian and Eastern costumes, plants and trees. Pages 243-255 deal with plants, fruits and trees in India, including several palm trees, a fig tree, a jack tree and a melon tree. "The w …

Printed by T. N for R. Clavell at the Stags Head in St Pauls Churchyard by St Gregories Church AND May 13. 1653 Imprimatur, Edm. Calamy. London, Printed by Tho. Warren 1653 and 1659, London. Small 4to. 7 x 5.5 inches. Unhappy Marksman: 32 pp. (A-D4), some early ink underlining. Bloody Husband: Title and 14 pp. (A-B4), old ink underlining. Light soiling to last leaf engraved bookplate of John Lethieullier Esqr. Remembrancer of the City of London to front pastedown. 18th century half red morocco gilt, slightly rubbed. Binding slightly rubbed but a very good example. Two exceptionally rare examples of Gallows Literature. These pamphlets were published in small quantities for just a matter of days around the times of the trial they related to, and therefore are extremely rare, with few surviving to this day. We can see that Smith pg 312 describes a pamphlet also dated 1653 which probably records the same events but has a different title, but this version is unrecorded. ESTC record states 6 copies are located in the UK and 4 in USA. The second work, according to an old pencil note to a leaf preceding the title, is 'Part of the Stourhead Heir Looms', above which is written in ink 'The original rare Edition'. An additional clipped catalogue entry for this volume is attached to the rear pastedown, indicating that this volume was lot 3800 in the Prideaux sale of February 1917, where it fetched £4 10s.

Stefano della BELLA (Firenze 1610 - 1664)
1653. Acquaforte, monogrammata in lastra in basso.

L'or obtenu résista à toutes les épreuves.

BACON, Francis
Amstelodami: L. Elzevirium, 1653. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly." ― Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. A rare collection of various Latin works and fragments of Francis Bacon published here for the first time by Isaac Gruter. According to Willems, this work follows the example that is common by other Elzevier printings. However according to Goldsmid, "It appears that Louis Elzevier only printed the sheet bearing the signature x, and the six preliminary leaves. The printer of the remainder was probably J. de Jonge." The following works are included in this printing: · "De Fluxu et Refluxu Maris" ('Of the Ebb and Flow of the Sea') · "Thema Coeli" ('Theory of the Heavens) · "Descriptio Globi Intellectualis" ('A Description of the Intellectual Globe') · "Cogitata et Visa de Interpretatione Naturae" ('Thoughts and Conclusions on the Interpretation of Nature · "Filium Labyrinthi sive Formula Inquisitionis" · "Topica Inquisitionis de Luce et Lumine" ('Topical Inquisitions into Light and Luminosity'.
