Arnhem - Joan Blaeu, 1654
[Click Below for Full Description]

FULLER, Thomas
1654. XXXII, 302, [2 blank]; 184; 79, [1 blank]; 112 pp.One of many editions in the original Latin, some printed in England and some on the continent, of the very popular Pharmacopoeia extemporanea by the English physician and doctor Thomas Fuller (1654-1734), first published in 1702. It contains remedies for numerous ailments, from recipes for antimonial ale and stomach wine to various pills and powders. In 1710 Fuller, warned of a pirated English translation of his work, reluctantly published an English edition himself. This translation of the Pharmacopoeia extemporanea caused quite a stir by giving away medical recipes previously guarded jealously by doctors. It was subsequently translated into French and German and published in Venice, Lausanne, Louvain, Amsterdam and Paris.Included and mentioned on the title-page are the following three works, each with a separate title-page with the same imprint (Venice, Franciscus and Nicolao Pezzana, 1776), which are included in all Venice editions.Ad 2: A collection of prescriptions. The first edition of this Tabula, which Philip Fraundorffer (1663-1702) first published in 1699 together with Joh. Abr. Mercklin contained 800 prescriptions; the present edition, no longer naming Mercklin, contains 600 prescriptions.Ad 3: Venetian edition of a compendium of information based on selected works on materia medica by Daniel Ludwig (1625-1680), physician at the Gotha court, who published several works on pharmacology and related subjects. This compendium was prepared by Wolfgang Christianus (d. 1745) and first published in 1707.Ad 4: A medi … [Click Below for Full Description]

CASTELLI, Francesco.
Per la facciata del duomo do Milano. [Milan, 1654]. Folio. With 6 unnumbered engraved plates, 5 showing designs for facades for the Cathedral (4 with small plans at the foot) and 1 showing a floor plan (5 folding, including 1 with three engraved slips showing alternative designs for parts of the facade). 18th-century flexible boards covered with 2 sheets of the same gold brocade paper, with a pattern of red flowers on a gold background. [36] ll. First edition of the extensive defence by Francesco Castelli (1599-1667) of his 1648 designs for a new façade for the Milan Cathedral (plates 4-6), published as a result of the rejection of his designs. A second edition or reissue with additional material appeared in 1656. There is no full-fledged title-page, but a sort of half-title without the author's name or imprint. Although many architects, including no less a figure than Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, had endorsed Castelli's designs (all published in this work), the design of his competitor Carlo Buzzi (ca. 1585-1658) was chosen (plate 3). Buzzi had been recently and unexpectedly appointed head of the church factory of the Cathedral, succeeding Francesco Maria Richini (1584-1658), who had also designed a new façade elaborating on earlier designs by Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527-1596) (plates 1-2).Richini's design was romanesque in style and Buzzi's gothic, while Castelli's combined gothic and baroque elements. The judgments of many Italian architects on such a controversial project as the replacement of the façade of one of the most important cathedrals in Italy provides us with a high … [Click Below for Full Description]

Together they contain eight double-page plates with fortification plans (mostly showing details), profiles and perspective views, plus a large folding fortification plan. First edition of a basic manual on fortification by the Dutch officer Henrick Ruse, or Baron von Rusenstein (1624-1679). He was the first to break with the Dutch tradition in fortification and to introduce new elements based on his personal experiences serving in several armies abroad. Herewith he came into conflict not only with Gerard Melder, the head of the fortifications in the city of Utrecht but also with Freitag in Germany. Melder answered with a manual of his own, and attacked Ruse in his Korte en klare instructie from 1658. Ruse, in his turn, retorted with the Aenwijsinghe der misverstanden van G. Contemporary sheepskin parchment. [24], 214; 69, [3]; 117, [3] pp. Rare first complete Netherlands edition of three curious Latin works on women, love and marriage, by Heinrich Kornmann: Sibylla trig-Andriana, De annulo usitato and De linea amoris, published together, at least the first two first published at Frankfurt in 1610. The first discusses the rights and duties of women and their conduct in matters of sex, the second is devoted to rings, including engagement rings and the third is about the commonplace of the five stages of love (sight, conversation, physical contact, kissing and consummation). Kornmann refers to a wide variety of sources, including classical authors and church fathers. He defends women's rights to some degree, but also repeats superstitious beliefs such as that a tree is injured by a virgin's plucking its first fruit. He further discusses incubi and succubi (male and female demons that have sexual relations with humans), astrology and the colour of women's cloths (preferably blue, pink, green and white). Robert Burton refers to De linea amoris in his 1621 Anatomy of melancholy, and all three works enjoyed widespread popularity far into the 18th century. The present edition appears to be the only one with a Netherlands imprint, though a 1631 edition in the STCN, perhaps contain … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ludovico di Varthema or Barthema (ca. 1468-1517) sailed from Venice to Egypt in 1502 and travelled through Alexandria, Beirut, Tripoli, and Aleppo, arriving in Damascus in April 1503. Here he enrolled in the Mameluke garrison and proceeded overland to Khaybar, Medina and Mekka, thereby becoming the first European to enter the two holiest cities of Islam. His travels furthermore took him to South Arabia, Shiraz (Persia), India, Goa, Cochin, and supposedly the Malay isthmus, Sumatra, Banda, the Moluccas, the Spice Islands, Borneo, Java and Malacca. He finally returned to Lisbon in 1508. "Varthema's Itinerario, first published in 1510, had an enormous impact at the time, and in some respects determined the course of European expansion towards the Orient" (Howgego). His account, moreover, contains a detailed description of Mecca and the Islamic pilgrimage, and four evocative plates (including an illustration of a Sati ritual).Plates shaved, head of title-page reinforced, otherwise in good condition. [Title on spine:] Opera.Amsterdam, Johannes Janssonius (2 works: Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge), 1651-1669. 19 works (42 parts) in 4 volumes. 8vo. With 10 engraved folding plates and 7 woodcut illustrations in text (lacking 4 woodcut plates in work 5). Half vellum (ca. 1815). Collection of 19 works by Johann Rudolph Glauber (1604-1670), "the best practical chemist of his day" (DSB), including notable writings such as: Pharmacopoea spagyrica, Furni novi philosophici, Prosperitatis Germaniae, Miraculum mundi and Operis mineralis. Many are the first Latin editions, published more or less simultaneously with the first editions in the original German. In 1639 Glauber left his native Germany because of the disturbances of the Thirty Years' War and moved to Amsterdam where he "outfitted what was surely the most impressive laboratory in Europe" (DSB). He is particularly interesting because he stands between the chemists who deliberately followed alchemy and those who took a modern scientific approach. With the bookplates of Charles Finney Cox (1846-1912), anonymous bookplates dated 1857, bookplates with unidentified 19th-century coat of arms and library stamps "KB". [32], 618, [28] pp. The third, last, best and only folio edition, much enlarged, thoroughly revised and with the engraved and many other illustrations newly made for it, of one of the major scientific works of the famous German Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), a truly encyclopedic work on magnetism. Kircher published his first major work, Ars Magnetica, in 1631. Only 63 pages in length, it extensively reports on his invention of a method for measuring magnetic power by means of a balance. The present work on magnetism was for Kircher an omnibus of scientific and also phantastic theories. He researched and measured magnetism in numerous situations and applied it to numerous fields of study, including cosmology, astronomy, geography, optics, electricity, medicine, metallurgy, animals, music, love, etc. He was the first to propose using magnetic declination to determine longitude. With the armorial bookplate of Hyacinth Theodore Baron (1706/07-1787), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Paris, and librar … [Click Below for Full Description]

Engelbrecht, 1654. <i>The Kitchen as Paper Theater</i><br /><br />Box: 39cm long x 19cm wide x 12cm high. Cards: 9cm x 14cm each. Six engraved hand-colored cards displayed in a black walnut peep-show box with two lids: one with a window and made of walnut (this one can be slid back and forth), and the other of clear acrylic. <br /><br />An extremely rare hand-colored Engelbrecht peep-show depicting a kitchen scene. This is a particularly nice example as it includes its original folding envelope (with the title in manuscript) and is presented in a black walnut display box. At one end is a window through which you can view the original envelope, preserved it its own compartment. At the other end is a window for viewing the six cards lined up down the length of the box. <br />The peepshow can be viewed either with its clear acrylic top in place, which allows all cards to be illuminated simultaneously, or with the sliding walnut lid, which has a window for manipulation. With the walnut lid, the viewer can slide the top from front to back thus creating a sense of motion as one looks from one kitchen scene to the other. This movement of your gaze through a three dimensional room, from one character to another, makes evident how peepshows have a place within early cinematic history. <br />Martin Engelbrecht (1654-1758) was an engraver in Augsburg who made etchings based upon old master paintings as well as fine plates illustrating the decorative arts and children's literature. His peep-shows function as a type of "paper theater" and were made to entertain and delight both children … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tarabotti, Arcangela (1604-1652)
Leiden: Gio. Sambix [i.e. Johannes and Daniel Elzevier], 1654. FIRST EDITION. Duodecimo: Bound in 19th c. green straight-grain morocco, gilt by Simier. A nice copy with a little bit of ink to the top edge of the title. The Elzevirs marketed this book under the name of the fictitious printer "Gio. Sambix" and used an armillary sphere as the printer's device. Very rare. Six copies in the U.S.: Penn, Michigan, Chicago, UCLA, Duke, and Illinois. This is the rare first edition of this polemic against paternal authority by the Benedictine nun Arcangela Tarabotti. In this work, originally titled "Tirannia paterna", Tarabotti speaks against the injustice of the forced monachation of girls and women, arguing that "La divotion forzata/ Al signore non è grata" (Forced devotion to God is not freely given.)Arcangela Tarabotti was born in Venice to Stefano Tarabotti and Maria Cadena. At eleven she was sent to study at the Benedictine convent of Santa Anna in Castello, where eight years later, against her will, she was forced to take vows. To indulge her passion for study, Tarabotti was allowed to receive visitors and books. From about 1630 Tarbotti began to associate with members of the "Accademia degli Incogniti", a group of prominent freethinkers influential in Venetian cultural life; its founder, Giavan Francesco Loredan, would arrange for the publication of at least two of her works."In her book, Tarabotti claims that all the girls of noble or rich families, except the very youngest ones, were forced into convents in order to preserve the patrimony for the first-born male. The document states: "Att a meeting ye Sixteenth Day of ye eleventh month 1654 Captain Keayne, Mr. Duncan, Mr. Parker, and Mr. Stoddard being prsent Henry Messenger was fined ten shillings for affirming that he had corected his sonn John for playing in ye meeting house which appears to be a lye, to prvent the Commissioners of laying any punishment upon him, ye boy himself said he was corected by his mother...". It is marked at the conclusion "This is a true copy of the record". The Town Commissioners were chosen to adjudicate minor offenses; the first named is probably Robert Keayne, an English militia officer and early Boston official. Nathaniel Duncan, Richard Parker, and Anthony Stoddard are all listed as Commissioners. "Sonn John" was born in 1641; his younger brother Henry Messenger, Jr. became a joiner and a chairmaker of note. The practice of seating boys together during religious services might have contributed to, John's problem. An interesting example of colonial punishment during Boston's third decade. Mostly fine with paper tape repair to a fold separation on the verso and minor discoloration in a blank area. Pre-1670 American documents are rare.

Donne, John (1573-1631)
London:, 1654. FOURTH EDITION, third issue. A reissue, with cancel title page, of the 1650 edition.. Octavo:. A very fine copy in contemporary tanned sheep, the boards framed by a double blind rule. The spine is ruled in compartments with a red morocco label, “Dr. Donne’s poems” tooled in gold and with small ornaments. Extremely fresh, within and without, with the faintest of wear to the front hinge. Complete with the portrait of Donne –now rarely encountered- by William Marshall, apparently after a lost miniature by Hillyard, showing Donne as a rakish young man of eighteen, with long hair and an earring in his right ear. Beneath the portrait is a poem by Izaak Walton. Provenance: Richard Jennings (Sotheby's London, 28 April 1952, lot 164) — John Hayward (Sotheby's London, 14 March 1966, lot 124): Purchased at the foregoing sale through Seven Gables. “The poetry of Donne represents a sharp break with that written by his predecessors and most of his contemporaries. Much Elizabethan verse is decorative and flowery in its quality. Its images adorn; its meter is mellifluous. Image harmonizes with image, and line swells almost predictably into line. Donne’s poetry, on the other hand, is written very largely in conceits— concentrated images that involve an element of dramatic contrast, of strain, or of intellectual difficulty. Most of the traditional ‘flowers of rhetoric’ disappear completely. For instance, in his love poetry one never encounters bleeding hearts, cheeks like roses, lips like cherries, teeth like pearls, or Cupid shooting arrows of love. Hall, Thomas
London: Printed by J. G[rismond]. for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham, 1654. First edition. [viii], 125, [1] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Early 19th-century half calf and marbled boards. Rebacked, binding rubbed with loss to spine ends, some light spotting and dampstaining to text, margins trimmed just touching headlines and marginalia on a few leaves. First edition. [viii], 125, [1] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. On the Loathsomeness of Long Hair. Hall (1610-1665) was a 17th-century nonconformist of evidently strict views. This is his "attack on the fashion for wearing the hair long;" Hall himself was described by his memorialist as 'a man of middle stature, his hair blackish, which he wore very short, scarce to cover his ears; his face pale and somewhat long' (Moore, 44)" (ODNB) Hall was not the only author to decry long hair in this period, though some authors decried only the habit of wearing a single lock of hair longer than the rest.
