Provenance: Contemporary inscription, "Sarah Hoorner". First edition of the physician John French's experiments on the healing properties of spa waters, dedicated to the Swiss physician Theodore de Mayerne (1573-ca. 1655). In addition to investigating the curative chemical properties of the springs, French also considers psychosomatic cures. French finds the waters useful for treating (among others) such maladies as apoplexy, epilepsy, asthma, scurvy ("even in those whose teeth are ready to drop from their head"), "foul" venereal disease, griefs of the womb", and mental illness (madness, melancholy)."In 1606, two men from Yorkshire, a physician and a landowner, visited the famous baths at Spa, near the city of Liège in modern Belgium. When they drank the iron-rich or chalybeate water, which had attracted travelers since the fourteenth century, they realized that it tasted remarkably similar to that of a spring south of Knaresborough, in what is now Harrogate in North Yorkshire. The local landowner, William Slingsby, arranged to have the fountain properly walled and turned into a public well, and helped to publicize its virtues... HORNIUS (HORN), Georgius.
De originibus Americanis libri quatuor. The Hague, Adriaan Vlacq (colophon: printed by Philippe de Croy, Leiden), 1652. 8vo. With title-page in red and black with De Croy's(?) woodcut tree device. Late 19th-century binding made from an early music manuscript on sheepskin parchment. [20], 282 pp. The first edition of a learned essay in Latin on the origins of the American Indians. It culminated a fierce debate that began with Grotius in his 1642 Dissertatio de origine gentium Americanarum, which argued that the American Indians of North America descended from Norsemen crossed via Iceland and Greenland; those of the Yuccatan from Ethiopian Christians, also crossing the Atlantic; and the more "advanced" ones in Peru from Chinese who came by boat to the Pacific coast. Grotius based his theories partly on linguistic arguments, culture and artefacts, but also attempted to make the evidence fit the Biblical accounts of the world, and he supposed no people lived in the New World in pre-Christian times. Johannes de Laet published a sharp critique of Grotius's arguments in 1643, demolishing most of his edifice and suggesting numerous possible scenarios, particularly suggesting a much earlier (pre-Christian) migration from Scythia across a land bridge between America and Tartary. The two men continued an even more heated exchange. Grotius's death in 1645 gave the last word to De Laet, who nevertheless urged the young Hornius (1620-1670), to take the study further, leading to the present account. In very good condition. The boards are slightly bowed and the spine labels chipped, but the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Historia, vitae, doctrinae, ac rerum gestarum Davidis Georgii haeresiarchae. Conscripta ab ipsius genero Nicolao Blesdikio. Nunc primum prodit in lucem ex musaeo Iacobi Revii. Deventer, Nathanael Cost, 1642. 2 works in 1 volume. 8vo. Contemporary vellum. [9], [11], 282; [8], 189 pp. The first edition of a learned essay on the origins of the American Indians. It was a reply to Grotius who had argued in 1642 that the American Indians were descendants of Norsemen, Ethiopians and Chinese, basing his theory mainly on linguistic arguments. Hornius criticized Grotius's philological approach and placed the origins of the American peoples in Scythia, Phoenicia, Carthage and China. The work is bound with Blesdijk's famous biography of the Anabaptist leader David Joris, edited by Jacobus Revius. It remains the most important source for the life and teaching of David Joris.Fine copies. With minor surface defects in the vellum, but binding still very good. RHODES, Alexandre de.
Relation des progrez de la Foy au Royaume de la Cochinchine vers les derniers quartiers du Levant. Envoieé au R.P. General de la Compagnie de Jesus.Paris, Sebastien and Gabriel Cramoisy, 1652. Small 8vo (17 x 11 cm). Modern boards. [12], 5, [2], 6-134, [2] pp. First edition, in French, of an account of Cochin China (now southern Vietnam) and the Jesuit missionary work there, by Father Alexander de Rhodes (Avignon 1591 or 1593 - Isfahan in Persia 1660). Although Rhodes had published an account of Cochin China in Italian in 1650 (see below), the present edition is not simply a translation and appears to include material not found in the earlier work. It was prepared for the press by the Jesuit Jacques de Machault (1599-1676 or 1678) at Caen, who signed the 7-page dedication to Princess Marie Léonor de Rohan and may have written the unsigned "avant-propos". Perhaps he combined information from the Italian work with information from other sources, but the fact that the text is signed by Rhodes from Macao in 1645, while he signed the preliminaries to the 1650 publication from Rome in 1650, suggests that Machault may have worked from a manuscript. With the title-page somewhat worn, but otherwise in very good condition. A first-hand Jesuit account of Vietnam, with a somewhat mysterious origin. Cordier, Indosinica, col. 1921; De Backer & Sommervogel VI, col. 1719, no. 5.

The local landowner, William Slingsby, arranged to have the fountain properly walled and turned into a public well, and helped to publicize its virtues… The Cambridge-educated physician Timothy Bright (ca. 1551-1615) first called this fountain 'the English spa' in the 1590s and advised others to try … [Click Below for Full Description]

The well-informed merchant brings up the seven articles the English proposed to regulate the trade and also the 36 articles the States-General offered as a counter proposal. The second pamphlet is the first edition of a follow-up to the previous conversation with the same three men.

It was a reply to Grotius who had argued in 1642 that the American Indians were descendants of Norsemen, Ethiopians and Chinese, basing his theory mainly on linguistic arguments. The work is bound with Blesdijk's famous biography of the Anabaptist leader David Joris, edited by Jacobus Revius. It remains the most important source for the life and teaching of David Joris.Fine copies. With minor surface defects in the vellum, but binding still very good. Culpeper, Nicholas
London: Printed for T. Vere and Nathe, 1652. First edition. Modern paper wrappers. Internally complete, collating [6], 76 and including the diagram and engraving of the solar eclipse. Title pages shaved with loss of date at footer; paper loss to lower corner of pages 15-16 and upper corners of pages 49-54 with no loss of text. Rare in trade and at institutions, the present work does not appear in the modern auction record and ESTC records only 11 copies (5 of these in North America). It is the only copy currently on the market. The execution of Charles I in 1649 was considered by millenarian Puritans as the end of the fourth monarchy as described in the Book of Daniel. By 1652, the arrival of a total solar eclipse known as Black Monday was further viewed as the heralding of a new world order and the second coming of Christ. Herbalist and astronomer Nicholas Culpeper examines Daniel's prophecies against his own readings of the skies; and he opened his tract with Daniel 2. 21-22. "He changeth the times and the seasons, he removeth Kings, he setteth up Kings...he revealeth the deep and secret things." After explaining to readers the scientific nature of an eclipse, Culpeper draws a correspondence between the sun's role in the solar system and a monarch's role in a realm. In this sense, "an Eclipse of the Sun is a taking away of both light and vertue of the Sun from a particular people, by the interpolation of the body of the Moon," and it is a symbol of the unfolding stages of God's plan. Culpeper predicts earthquakes, pestilence, and "strange massacres, desperate tumults, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry Cogan, trans; M. de Scudery, author
Humphrey Mosely, et al, London, 1652. Folio or large quarto, about 11" tall. First English translation of the 1641 French original, and an interesting item of seventeenth-century Orientalism. Scarce on the market. Complete in four parts. Condition is a little rough: Front board detached and frontispiece as well; original calf binding showing significant wear, including wear-through at the edges. Loss at edges to title page and frontispiece. Probable 18th-century armorial bookplate of Philip Southcote on front board. Still; the book is usable, and given its scarcity and interest, it is worth the attention of a conservator. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
