Manuscript written in a gothic hand with headings in a Latin hand, in brown and red ink on paper, the author/compiler's preliminary note (quoted here as the title) opening with a large decorated gothic M. Contemporary (ca. 1660) vellum.

A very extensive and detailed manuscript book of medicinal recipes in Dutch, written by a woman who was clearly an experienced apothecary. The book has no surviving title-page, but begins with a two-page preliminary note whose opening words we quote above as the title. It continues with a note indicating that one person differs from another and that one therefore also needs different medicines for different people, followed by a page with three recipes for adjusting the flavour of beer and a brief note on wine, then a page giving the relations between various units of weight used by apothecaries. The remedies for a wide variety of ailments follow, offering remedies for everything from constipation to plague. It tells how to extract medicinal oils, prepare powders, salves, syrups and waters, and gives instructions for distilling. Several recipes involve wine, beer or other alcoholic drinks. A long section near the end covers ailments of women and children, including problems related to pregnancy. While women in the Dutch golden age enjoyed greater opportunities to work in traditionally male professions than in most countries, their work remains much less well documented than that of their male counterparts, so the present manuscript provides a remarkable window into a woman's contribution to medicine and pharmacology.Four leaves have been removed from the first text quire: A1, 2, 5 and 6. A1 and A2 preceded the preliminary note, but it is not clear that the manuscript ever had a title-page, so they may have served merely as additional endleaves. The manuscript is further complete and in very good condition, with only an occasional spot or very minor marginal defect. The binding is soiled, somewhat rubbed and wrinkled, and 3 of the 4 ties are mostly lost, but it is still good.

Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula.

1652 - Amsterdam, 1652. Original colour. 445 x 560mm. Restoration to margin and centre fold. This magnificent planisphere manages to include 30 separate illustrations in its panels. Along the top and bottom are equestrian portraits of the Twelve Cæsars of Tacitus. The four corners feature female allegorical figures of the Continents, with Europe as a shepherdess, Asia seated on a camel, Africa on a crocodile and America on an armadillo! The left border has prospects of Rome, Amsterdam, Jerusalem and Tunis, interspersed with illustrations of European, Asian and African dress. The right border is given over completely to America: the prospects of Mexico City, Havana, Pernambuco and Todos os Santos Bay are separated by vignettes of North American natives, South Americans and the giants of the Magellan Strait. Originally published in 1639, most of the cartography has been copied from Blaeu, although Arctic America has been extended, as has the St Lawrence River. This state has the date 1652, the year of Visscher's death, added. SHIRLEY: 350.

Cases and questions resolved in the civil-law. Collected by R. Zouch professor of the civil-law in Oxford.

Oxford printed by Leon. Lichfield for Tho. Robinson. A.D 1652 - 8vo., (24) + 256pp., bookplate and inkstamps of Los Angeles Board of Law library> on endpapers (not elsewhere), contemporary calf, later reback and label, minor wear, else a very good crisp copy. First edition. Wing Z 17. Madan 2210. Thomason E.1319(1). Zouche attempts here 'to popularize the Roman Civil Law, or at least to show that its study is still worth pursuing. The cases are all from the Digest, and in English, and are quite different from those in the Specimen Quaestionum> in 1653. The work falls into two parts, each with seven titles, part I concerning Rights, and part 2 (p.167) concerning Judicature.' [Madan, III, p.22]. Cases and questions resolved> (1652) 'is a casebook of problems taken from the texts of Justinian's Digest,> with full references, primarily for the use of students of the civil law. It was originally intended to be published in ‘the proper language of the civil law’, but, he explained cautiously, it appeared exceptionally in English, ‘that others also might discerne that the study of that learning conduceth to the knowledge of some things worthy of consideration’. Although the Roman fact-situations might appear ‘forraigne’, the doubts expressed and their resolution could be applied to more familiar topics.' [Peter Stein in ODNB]. [Attributes: First Edition]

"Life and Work of an Influential Spanish Jesuit Who Advised Peter Claver on His Trip to Colombia, Written by Another Jesuit, President of the College of Manila". 4to; missing 2 leaves (4pp) of index. Some copies were printed with a portrait; some without it, such as this copy. We have checked about a dozen library holdings and roughly half are missing the portrait. FIRST EDITION. The author, Francisco Colin, was a Spanish Jesuit missionary who was born in Catalonia in 1592 and died in Manila in 1660. A historian and educator, he worked for many years in the Philippines. Of all of his works three are especially noteworthy: a history of the Philippines from c. 1640; a monograph on evangelical work published in 1663; and the present biographical work from 1652. This monograph focuses on the life of Alonso Rodríguez (1532-1617), a Jesuit who was highly influential among his peers in the Society, especially for Saint Peter Claver, a missionary who carried out intensive proselytizing work in Cartagena de Indias in the Kingdom of New Granada (present-day Colombia) and became known as the Apostle of the Slaves. One of the Jesuit residences in Bogotá Colombia bears the name San Alonso Rodríguez, in his honor. This work by Colin provides an exhaustive account of the life of Saint Alonso Rodríguez, beatified in 1825 by Pope Leon XII and canonized in 1888 by Leon XIII. * WorldCat: 2 copies in US Libraries (JCB (without portrait, like ours) & IU) Medina, J.T. Horn's On American Origins "traces the supposed original sources from whence the North American Indians were derived." Horn wrote this work as a rebuttal to Grotius and in support of Joannes de Laet. In this work he surveys the different opinions of American origins. Horn proposes a diffuse settlement of the Americans and ultimately suggests a land bridge from Asia over the Bering Strait. Horn references early travels to and accounts of America. He also discusses of the Huron and Iroquois tribes of Canada. Sabin 33014; Palau y Dulcet 116199; Alden/Landis 652/111; Field 717. Provenance: Sign on title "James Gardiner, Eman.
