Generale de L’Afrique Seconde Partie du Monde. [Bound with his:] Description Generale de L’Amerique, Troisieme Partie du Monde

Paris: chez Laurent Cottereau, 1643. Hardcover. Very Good. Parts I and II (of 4) in one volume, complete for each part of the world; folio (345 x 220mm). Two engraved folding maps of Africa and the Western Hemisphere by Petrus Bertius, both dated 1640 (second state). Title pages separately printed in red and black with engraved allegorical vignette in each, decorative woodcut initials, chapter head and tail-pieces throughout. Near contemporary mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, gilt-stamped morocco title label on spine, red sprinkled edges; (occasional small dampstains, lightly browned throughout, maps with come creases, trimmed; lightly rubbed with some small gouges). The Generale was first published in 1619 under the title Les Etats, Empires et Principautez du Monde, this edition is probably edited by Jean Baptist Rocoles (whose name appears in the 1660 edition). The Bertius maps were first published in 1624 and this copy maintains the second state (dated 1640) unique to this edition. The same title was printed by Claude Sonnius and Denys Bechet in Paris that same year 1643, although having the third state maps (dated 1646). Pierre D?'Avity was an avid explorer and undertook many historical and geographical tours which lead to several publications on worldly descriptions. This 17th-century two-part compilation is notable for keeping some of the earliest mentions of the rediscovery of the island Martinique in 1637. The work is completed in two further parts on Asia and Europe.

Cet ouvrage est un traité de philosophie morale envisagé sous l'angle théologique et psychologique. L'auteur y traite de la conscience, de la liberté, du sens moral, de la volonté, etc. Rousseurs.         A letter from Sir William Waller, a Member of the House of Commons, to the Right Honorable Robert Earl of Essex his Excellencie; of a great victory he obtained at Malmsbury, 23 Martii, in the County of Wilts: with the names of divers of the Commanders in chief that he took, with 300 foot, a troop of horse, and many peeces of ordnance. Also a true relation of Sergeant Major Burghells valour, who went into the enemies quarters at Sherston, routed them, took twenty five prisoners, one Captain, two Lieutenants, one quarter-master, billed eight, and took forty or fifty horses and arms, without the losse of one man

London, printed for Edw. Husbands, and are to be sold at his shop in the middle Temple. March 28 1643. small 4to., 8pp., title printed within a typographical border, in a fine early 20th century binding by Riviere of full polished calf, spine gilt and labelled, inner gilt dentelles. A fine copy. First edition. Wing W.542. Sir William Waller, 1598?-1668, a senior Parliamentarian army officer, is said to have been dubbed 'William the Conqueror' on account of his numerous military successes (Portsmouth, Farnham Castle, Winchester, Arundel, Chichester, &c. &c.). 'At the beginning of 1643 royalist successes in the west threatened the Severn valley and Bristol. On 11 February 1643 the earl of Essex appointed Waller major-general of the west. He reached Bristol after rapid night marches but with only 2000 men: this lack of men was to be a continuing source of friction between him and Essex. In late March, after another night march, he had a ?'great victory?' when he took Malmesbury in Wiltshire, where the enemy quickly surrendered, in part persuaded by Waller's noisy pretended preparations for an assault under cover of darkness (A Letter from Sir William Waller … to … Essex … of a Great Victory … at Malmesbury>, 23 Martii, 1643). He had suffered, however, from the half-heartedness of some of his men and a shortage of ammunition, and it was a costly victory. Nevertheless his successes continued.' [Barbara Donagan in ODNB]. The present report to his C.-in-C. is a vividly detailed account of the battle.

Il Tirolo con li Vescouati di Trento e Brixen e la Citta Imperiale di Costanza

Rome Perfect condition. Map depicts Tirol, the southern part of Austria and the northern part of Italy with the lake of Garda. The cities of Lindau, Kempten, Kufstein, Innsbruck, Bludenz, Chur, Trient, Brixen, Riva, Garda and a cartouche with an eagle. Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643 - 1695) Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643 - 1695) was an important Italian cartographer and engraver active in 17th century Italy. Hewas born in Montorsello, near Vignola Italy to a well known italian family. After his studies of literature at the University of Bologna, Cantelli took a position as secretary to the Marquis Obizzi de Ferrara. Eventually Cantelli relocated to Venice where he developed an interest in cartography. In the company of a French ambassador he traveled to Paris where met the French cartographer Guillaume Sanson as well as his contemporaries Jacques-Andre Duval and Michel-Antoin Baudrand. It was most likely the influence of these innovative French cartographers that inspired Cantelli's careful and meticulous approach, in which he based his cartography .Back in Italy, Cantelli took service Count Rinieri Marescotti, with whom he traveled extensively throughout Italy, becoming in the process acquainted with the Italian publisher Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. It is with Rossi that Cantelli began officially publishing his maps. The earliest maps to bear the Cantelli-Rossi imprint date to 1672 and detail the Holy Land, Persia, and the Ottoman Empire. Around 1680 the duo also began to publish the Mercurio Geografico, a large format atlas illustrating all parts of the world in a splendid Italian baroque detail defined by elaborate finely engraved cartouche work, high quality paper, and bold Roman lettering, and dark rich inks. Some have compared his style go that of Giovanni Antonio Magini, another Italian cartographer of the previous generation. Cantelli da Vignola in fact pioneered the Italian style of fine bold engraving that would eventually be embraced and expanded upon by Vincenzo Coronelli. Cantelli chose to work with the Due of Modena, in the service of whom he produced numerous maps and well as two large globes. He died in Modena in November of 1695., original colored, Copper print, 42 x 55.
