ANGELUS, Francis Mason [edit.]
Douay: The Widdow of Marke Wyon, 1644. 1644 Saint Francis Assisi Monastic Rule of Penance ENGLISH ed Angelus Douay"The deeds you do may be the only sermon some persons will hear today."― Francis of AssisiIn the 13th-century, devout followers of Saint Francis of Assisi formed the Third Order of Saint Francis. This order closely followed the preachings and examples set by Saint Francis who corresponded with these groups through letter. These letters ultimately developed into what would become the rules for penance in the Third Order. The 17th-century brought an English Franciscian friar Richard Angelus of St. Francis Mason who published a commentary and meditation on the Rule of the Third Order which was first translated into English in 1644. This commentary was written to provide guidance and clarity to these Third Order 'tertiaries'.Item number: #11331Price: $750ANGELUS, Francis Mason [edit.]The Rule of Penance of the Seraphicall Father S. Iok en ernst: dat is; Allerlei deftige hofredenen, quinkslagen, boerteryen, raadsels, spreuken, vragen, antwoorden, gelikenissen; en al wat dien gelijkvormigh met de naam van apophtegmata verstaan wordt. ... 't Eerste deel [all published].Amsterdam, Jacob Lescaille, 1644. 4to. With engraved vignette on title-page. Contemporary vellum, traces of ties. [8], 352 pp. First edition of the first and only volume of a collection of apophthegmata aptly titled Jok en ernst ("Jest and earnest"), by the cousin of Johan de Brune, the elder (1588-1658), who is now better known, but in his heyday less popular than his younger namesake. It includes 240 anecdotes all accompanied by extensive commentary. It is this combination of witticisms with a broad knowledge that gives this book its intellectual charm.Johan de Brune, the younger (1616-1649) was raised partly in England by his uncle Francicus Junius, a pioneer of Germanic philology, and partly in Amsterdam by the Dutch humanist Vossius. He was well-read at an early age, and was compared to Montaigne and Bacon by his contemporaries, but his early death prevented him from living up to these comparisons.A restored tear and some minor waterstains in the lower margins, the title-page slightly browned and some occasional spots, otherwise in very good condition. Binding somewhat soiled, but still very good. STCN (7 copies of this issue); Te Winkel IV, pp. 327-328.

The Hague, Jan Veely, 1644. 4to. With a letterpress motto in a woodcut border on the title-page, 1 woodcut decorated initial and bands of arabesque fleurons. Modern brown cloth, short-title in gold on spine, with 19th-century front wrapper bound in. [2], "51" [= 49], [1] pp. Pamphlet warning of the dangers to the Dutch Republic and its people if they do not unify the East and West India Companies under a single charter. Though in Europe the Dutch allied themselves with Portugal against Spain in the Eighty Years' War, they seized a great deal of Portuguese territory in Brazil and elsewhere in the years 1641 to 1644 and rejected Portuguese demands for its return in June 1644. Portugal, in no position to reconquer its territories, agreed to a truce with the Dutch at Goa in November 1644. Even before the truce the Dutch had reduced their garrison at Recife and recalled the highly regarded and moderate governor-general Johan Maurits of Nassau. On his return to the Netherlands in May 1644 he warned of the dangers of reducing the forces and envisioned the unification of the East and West India Companies to make a stronger force that could seize Spain's colonies in Peru and Mexico. The present pamphlet argues that the unification of the companies would secure the Dutch colonies in Brazil, help them drive Spain out of Peru and Mexico, cut off the source of wealth that was feeding the Spanish w … [Click Below for Full Description]

RIPA, Cesare.
Iconologia, of uytbeeldingen des verstands: ... ...Amsterdam, Dirck Pietsz. Pers, 1644. 4to. With engraved allegorical frontispiece and 196 emblematic woodcut illustrations (ca. 8.5 x 6 cm) in the text by Jan Christoffel Jegher. Parchment (ca. 1725?). [14], 636, [8] pp. First Dutch edition, newly and extensively illustrated, of a famous encyclopaedia of iconology, the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa (1560- 1645). It describes about 650 symbolic human or semi-human figures, illustrates nearly 200, and was intended as a guide for all kinds of artists, writers, orators and amateurs. In the present 1644 edition the Amsterdam publisher, bookseller and poet Dirck Pietersz. Pers (1581-1659) translated and edited Ripa's text and Castellini's additions and made further additions of his own. He also included 196 woodcut illustrations cut for this edition based on a selection of those in the 1630 edition. It was in this form that Ripa's work was best known to artists in the Dutch golden age and it remained in use by painters and designers for the decorative arts far into the 18th century. With water stains throughout, serious in the first few and last few leaves, and marginal tears or restorations in a few leaves, but still in good condition and with large margins. The binding is uniformly abraded but structurally sound. An important source of knowledge and inspiration for artists of the Dutch golden age. Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 683; Praz, p. 474.

Spine sunned to a pleasing honey color, a scattering of small spots to boards, but AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY, clean and crisp internally, in a lustrous binding showing virtually no wear.Beautifully preserved and with a distinguished provenance, this is a collection of letters written by "leaders and illustrious men" of both ancient times and Renaissance Italy. First printed in Venice in 1574, it is the work of the Protestant Italian physician Girolamo Donzellini (1513-87), whose Lutheran leanings eventually led to his execution at the hands of the Inquisition. The letters on virtue and leadership collected here include correspondence by Cicero and Julius Caesar, various popes, and Italian nobles, among them the doge of Venice, the king of Naples and the duke of Milan. Although it bears the name and insignia of Louis Elzevier, Willems tells us that the "quite pretty" edition is "a stranger to the Elzevier presses." Modern brown cloth, short-title in gold on spine, with 19th-century front wrapper bound in.

Stefano Della Bella (Firenze 1610 - Firenze 1664)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Tarabotti's "Anti-satire" is not only a "defense of women's fashions and a denunciation of men, their clothes, and their hair styles but also a strong condemnation of men's treatment of women and, in general, of the subordination of women in society."(Weaver) Th book is dedicated by the author to Vittoria della Rovere, Grand Duchess of Tuscany, on 30 June 1644. Avila, Francisco de (1573-1647)?
Manuscript, 1644. [vi]+450+[1 blank]+19 index] pages. Duodecimo (6" x 4 1/4") bound in period vellum with hand written title to spine. Dedicated to Beato Luis Gonzaga. Original manuscript.

The work is attributed to Francisco de Avila. He was curate or vicar in the province of Huarochiri of Peru, later curate at Huánaco, finally Canon of the Church of La Plata (now Sucre), in Bolivia. Born in Peru as a foundling (quorum parentes ignorantur he says himself); date of demise unknown. He was one of the most active investigators of Indian rites and customs of his time. In 1608 he wrote a treatise of the "Errors, False Gods, and Other Superstitions of the Indians of the Provinces of Huarochiri, Mama, and Chaclla", of which unfortunately only the first six chapters are known to exist and have been translated into English. It is, even in its incomplete form, an invaluable contribution to the knowledge of the Peruvian Indians and their primitive lore. In 1611 Avila wrote an equally important report on the Indians of Huánaco in eastern Peru, of which the unpublished manuscript. is extant. Such writings greatly mitigate the charges which the destruction of fetishes and other objects of primitive worship of the Indians have called forth against the Church.

The manuscript was probably written to teach Quechua speaking children the use of Spanish. It is divided into three chapters: I. Declination and conjugations. II. Latin and Greek declination. III. Romance. Genres and past. The teaching is rudimentary for the treatment of the way to teach to children, and very eas … [Click Below for Full Description]

Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma and Piacenza (1612-1646).
Piacenza: December 1644. - Over 60 words penned in an unidentified hand on 10-7/8 inch high by 8-5/8 inch wide creamy white watermarked paper with an attached integral address leaf. He sends Christmas greetings ("Santo Natale") to Marquess Francesco Capizucchi (1605-1678), the brother of Cardinal Raimondo Capizucchi. The letter is boldly signed by Odoardo Farnese with his abbreviated smudged signature. The letter has dispatch slits meant to accommodate ribbons and is folded. The Duke's armorial paper seal is attached with red wax on the address leaf. The text printed along the edges of the seal reads: "ODOARD. FAR. PAR. ET. PLA. DVX. V." There is some minor soiling with tiny holes at the folds. Very good. Seigneur Sabion Roncil, etc." The 6-1/4 inch high by 4-5/8 inch wide copper plate portrait, as measured from the plate marks, is engraved on 9-1/4 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide creamy white paper. Titled under the oval image, a "fleur-de-lys" decorated shield topped by a crown is depicted at top left and the number "119" is engraved within laurel branches at top right. Although the artist is unidentified, the engraving is attributed to French painter & engraver Balthasar Moncornet by Emile Socard in his "Catalogue de la Bibliotheque de la ville de Troyes". Near fine but with minor flaws. The French painter, engraver and "tapissier" Balthasar Moncornet (1600-1668) was known for his portraits of approximately 45 eminent figures of the 17th century. Although he demonstrated the machine to members of the 'Committee for the Fortifications of the City of London', when it was 'shot at about 40 paces from it, the musqueteeres ramming in powder and bullet in their musquets, with full bandeleeres of powder, yet could not the shot pierce through the said brest-worke ….. HELMONT, Johannes Baptista van
Jodocum Kalcoven. 1644 1ed van Helmont Medicine Opuscula Medica Fever Pathology Plague Paracelsus Jan Baptiste van Helmont was an early 17th-century Dutch physician and mystic who made important and lasting contributions to pneumatic chemistry and the scientific understanding of gas. One of his most important medical works was published in 1644, the year he died, ‘Opuscula Medica Inaudita’. This book was a collection of Helmont’s treatises on stones, fevers, pathology, and the plague. According to Heirs of Hippocrates, “In this work, Helmont established his name as one of the founders of biochemistry, although some authorities believe that he is perhaps overrated because of his vacillations between mysticism and science. In any event, his discovery of digestive juices in the stomach and intestine, and especially his first use of the specific gravity of urine for diagnostic purposes, mark him as a man of no insignificant importance in the history of medicine” Item number: #10351 Price: $950 HELMONT, Johannes Baptista van Joannis Baptistæ Van Helmont, Toparchæ in Royenborch, Pellines, &c. ENRIQUEZ GOMEZ, Antonio.
Rouen, Laurens Maurry, 1644. 4to, pp. [viii], 144; minute paper flaw in the gutter at the bottom of the first leaf, else a clean, crisp copy in contemporary limp vellum.Rare first edition, and the only edition to be published during the author's lifetime, of this Spanish dramatized version of the Fall.Segovia-born playwright, novelist and poet Antonio Enriquez Gomez (1601-1663), of Portuguese-Jewish descent, was originally known under the name of Enríque Enríquez de Paz. Forced into exile in France following allegations of heresy, he assumed the name of Enríquez Gómez and became secretary to Louis XIII. Gómez returned openly to profess Judaism a few years later while in Amsterdam. On returning to Spain, though, he fell into the hands of the Inquisition, was condemned, burned in effigy in 1660, eventually arrested, and died in prison.Gómez' literary affiliation was mainly with the dramatic school of Lope de Vega (to whose posthumous panegyrics he contributed a sonnet). La Culpa del primero pelegrino is dedicated to Marguerite of Lorraine, the wife of Louis XIII's brother Gaston. It is a versified dialogue recounting the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. The theme reflects the synthetic role and efforts of marrano culture: Adam is the perpetrator and victim of the original sin of Christian doctrine, but his condition is described - in the title itself – primarily as that of the archetypical exile, a man banned from his land. Whilst critics have attacked the verbosity of his style and his indulgence in catalogues (enumerations of characters, of vices, sins, professions … [Click Below for Full Description]

Petit in-4. 6ff. 202pp. 1f. (1f.blanc). Palau, 47237. Bourgeois et André 2844.
