Nieremberg, Juan Eusebio
1644. Madrid. Maria de Quiñones. Folio, (298 x 200). 6 ff., 808 pp. Contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered in ink, a little wrinkled. Intermittent foxing and browning, sometimes uniform, generally a good copy, with the usual flaws to the paper; title page with two ownership inscriptions.- First edition. A rare work, no copy has appeared for sale in over 50 years at auction, which includes relevant information of the Jesuit missionary activities in the West and mainly East Indies; the Firmamento is part of a series of works by the Jesuit scholar and historian of the Order, Juan Eusebio Nieremberg. The work comprises a series of biographies of important Jesuit missionaries, with their deeds and relevant accomplishments during their evangelization. The complete set of biographies is virtually impossible to obtain. “This work having been published at different periods during the space of almost a century, complete sets are excessively rate. The interest of the work, excluding some “jesuitical chaff,” is not inferior to its rarity, as it contains accounts of many early voyages to the Indias, not elsewhere to be found.” (Sabin, on the Vidas exemplares) Provenance: contemporary ownership inscription to title page “Soi de los descalzos Trinitarios de Herbas(?)”, and “Soi de los Descalcos Trinitarios de Herbas”, evidently a volume preserved in the same library for a considerable time. Sabin, 55270.

Barclay, John.
Amsterdam, Johann Jansson, 1644. [Click Below for Full Description]

The book, written in English, was published in 1644 with the subtitle "The Law and the Prince". Published in response to Bishop john Maxwell's "Sacro-Sancta Regum Majestas", it was intended to be a comprehensive defence of the Scottish Presbyterian ideal in politics. The book defends the rule of law and the lawfulness of defensive wars (including Pre-emptive wars) and advocates limited goverment and constitutional law in politics and the "Two Kingdoms" theory of Church-State relations (which advocated distinct realms of church and state but opposed religious toleration). Rutherford's Lex, Rex utilizes arguments from Scripture, Natural Law and Scottish law, and along with the sixteenth century Vindiciae contra tyrannos, it attacked royal absolutism and emphasized the importance of the covenant and the rule of law (by which Rutherford included Divine Law and Natural Law as well as positive law). After the Restoration, the authorities cited Rutherford for high treason, but his death intervened before the char … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pietro TESTA detto "Il Lucchesino" (Lucca 1611 - Roma 1650)
Etching, 1644, signed on lower centre plate. Example in the third state of four, published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi. Excellent work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "double circle and fleur-de-lis" watermark, small margins, small tears perfectly repaired on upper part, in very good condition. Testa realized this work to pay homage to the brand-new pope Innocenzo X Pamphili, who was succeeding Urbano VIII in 1644. The composition has been realized around the bust of the new pope, surrounded by putti celebrating Peace; one of them offers a laurel wreath to the god Tiber, who's sitting on the right side, in the foreground. Belmonte, Moses (translation by)
1644. Amsterdam: Yshak de Cordova, 5466. Fifth printing. Hardcover. poor to g-. 16mo. 3.5x6". 167pp. (missing final page). Original brown calf boards. The book is a complete Spanish-language translation of the biblical book Song of Songs (Song of Solomon), and Perkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers), the famed collection Jewish ethical sayings taken from the Talmud. Both of these works feature Moses Belmonte's translations, which had been printed in Amsterdam since 1644. The translations are interlinear with each passage printed in Hebrew, followed by the Spanish, and in the case of Song of Songs the translation is followed by Spanish-language commentary. These works are related in their connection to the Jewish observance of Passover. Song of Songs is read on the Sabbath during Passover, and chapters from Perkei Avot are traditionally read one each week between Passover and Shavuot. Pages 1-91 contain Song of Songs and 92-167 contain the text of Perkei Avot. As stated in the preface, this is the "Quinta Imprension" (Fifith printing) of the work, based on Belmonte's translation and that it was printed for the congregation of Rabbi Jacob de Mesa, in Amsterdam. Title page bordered with a decorative woodblock motif. Decorative head and endpeices at the beginning and end of sections. Some of the translated text of Perkei Avot contains numerous in-text hand-corrections and Hebrew marginal notes in ink, from the period. Text in Spanish, with passages in Hebrew and some Ladino. Obrecht, Georg
Straßburg, L. Zetzners Erben, 1644. Small 4to; pp. (2), (10) Vorrede by G. Obrecht s son Joannes Thomas Obrecht (the publisher) , 59, (1), (6) index; pp. 1-160, 181-351 (thus complete), (1), (8) register; contemporary stiff vellum, binding a bit soiled, handwritten title on spine faded, red edges, last page with a small private stamp, a few quires browned, a good to very good copy. Second edition (Titelauflage). This copy lacks the main title. Erroneously the binder placed the title of discursus bellico-politicus at the beginning of the book and forgot the main title (a fault which can be found in other copies too). All parts including the preface are dated 1617. The difference between the 1617 and the 1644 edition is a new title page dated 1644 with indication of the editor/printer L. Zatzners Erben, a 6 pages index after discursus bellico-politicus and an 8 pages register at the end of the book. Georg Obrecht (1547-1612) was a law professor in Straßburg strongly influenced by Jean Bodin. His work consists of a series of essays on good government and first and foremost on the means to provide the state with an abundance of money to pay for the high costs of the wars with the Turks and for other purposes of state interest. The author pleads for the use of population statistics for a righteous fiscal policy, an honest monetary policy, the introduction of a system of savings by parents for their children etc. All parts are with own title pages, and were privately printed by the author s son Johann Thomas Obrecht in 1617. The discursus bellico-politicus is in Latin, all other … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Avila, Francisco de (1573–1647)?
Manuscript, Cuzco, 1644. [vi]+450+[1 blank]+19 index] pages. Duodecimo (6" x 4 1/4") bound in period vellum with hand written title to spine. Dedicated to Beato Luis Gonzaga. Original manuscript. The work is attributed to Francisco de Avila. He was curate or vicar in the province of Huarochiri of Peru, later curate at Huánaco, finally Canon of the Church of La Plata (now Sucre), in Bolivia. Born in Peru as a foundling (quorum parentes ignorantur he says himself); date of demise unknown. He was one of the most active investigators of Indian rites and customs of his time. In 1608 he wrote a treatise of the "Errors, False Gods, and Other Superstitions of the Indians of the Provinces of Huarochiri, Mama, and Chaclla", of which unfortunately only the first six chapters are known to exist and have been translated into English. It is, even in its incomplete form, an invaluable contribution to the knowledge of the Peruvian Indians and their primitive lore. In 1611 Avila wrote an equally important report on the Indians of Huánaco in eastern Peru, of which the unpublished manuscript. is extant. Such writings greatly mitigate the charges which the destruction of fetishes and other objects of primitive worship of the Indians have called forth against the Church. The manuscript was probably written to teach Quechua speaking children the use of Spanish. It is divided into three chapters: I. Declination and conjugations. II. Latin and Greek declination. III. Romance. Genres and past. The teaching is rudimentary for the treatment of the way to teach to children, and very easy for the instr … [Click Below for Full Description]

DIGBY, Sir Kenelm.
FIRST EDITION, presentation copy to a close relative (the book is dedicated to Digby's son) on large paper, in contemporary red morocco. This introduction by Digby of Gassendian and Cartesian atomism into England provided Boyle and Newton with the foundations for their achievements in chemistry and physics. "Digby's Two Treatises is a landmark work in several fields of early science. It is the first fully developed expression of atomism or corpuscular theory; the first important defence of Harvey on the circulation in English; a modern presentation of the nervous system predating Descartes; and a ground-breaking work in embryology. It also contains the first recorded patch-test for allergy; the fullest early account in English of teaching lip-reading; and material on conditioning anticipating Pavlov" (Rubin). Of the 38 chapters, Digby devotes six to light and colours, three to magnetism and three to generation and physiology. Wing D1448. Duveen pp. 171-172. Thorndike VII, pp. 498-502. CURABELLE (Jacques)
"It contains literal quotations of [Desargues]’s lost "Brouillon [Brouillon project d'une atteinte aux événements des rencontres d'un cône avec un plan]", the beginning of the New geometry. Moreover here we find the first printed mentioning of "La Pascale", the mystic hexagram, published in 1640 by the sixteen years old Pascal in a broadside, known only by one copy which survived." (Weill). [Click Below for Full Description]

This book is bound in whole light brown calf with a fully decorate back with the monogram I.A.G. in each panel, and with the sides perfectly plain excepting for the coat of arms of de Thou in the centre of each side. It included Fanfare bindings of the late period in which the spirals were profuse and the foliage elaborate and delicate; the dotted work of Le Gascon in his early days; fawn-colored calf, ornamented with plain gold lines; white vellum stamped with arms; and, most numerous of all, books covered in moroccos, red, olive, and citron, perfectly plain except for his fine cost of arms.
