Folio. With richly engraved title-page, 74 (of 76) engraved maps, plans and views on 54 (of 56) plates normally included the 1642 first edition (nearly all double-page) plus 1 large folding plate from the 1653 Anhang, and 67 additional engravings from the 17th and 18th century, including at least 16 by or after Merian. Altogether there are 3 general maps (1 of Germany and surroundings and 2 of Switzerland), 4 detail maps, and numerous city plans and views. Lacking the bird's eye view of Herisau and the second of two views of Neuchâtel. Tanned sheepskin (ca. 1700?), gold-tooled spine. 72, [8] pp. plus engraved plates. First edition of the famous topography of Switzerland, richly illustrated by Matthäus Merian (1593-1650). The main interest of the work is in the engravings, which are of the highest artistic standard. Nearly all the plates are double-page, with an occasional larger folding or single-page plate. They provide finely executed plans and views of the towns and regions mentioned in the text. The text is by Martin Zeiler (1589-1661). This is the first of Merian's topographical works to deal with his native country, Switzerland. The folding plate from the 1653 Anhang shows the view of Vierwaldstättersee, number 36+ in Wüthrich's list. The 67 extra engravings from various sources, all related to Switzerland, were c … [Click Below for Full Description]

[12], 349, [1], [2 blank] pp. First and only edition of Guadagnoli's Latin grammar of the Arabic language, in a luxurious folio format. He notes that they have taken special care with their Arabic setting and with the metre to suit them to the desires of native Arabic speakers, though the fact that the text was in Latin. The texts used as examples include the first printing of two poems taken from manuscripts in the oriental library collected by Pietro della Valle (1586-1652) in Rome: the "Carmen Chazregiacum" and the "Carmen de invocationibus'.With early manuscript shelf-marks. Most of the sheets have browned patches or browned spots, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. Binding very good, with only minor wear and a couple small abrasions. BLAEU, Joan.
Nova et accuratissima totius terrarum orbis tabula.[Amsterdam, Joan Blaeu, ca. 1657/64].With: BLAEU, Willem Jansz.(2) Europa recens descripta.(3) Asia noviter delineata.(4) Africa nova descriptio.(5) Americae nova tabula.[Amsterdam, Joan Blaeu, ca. 1642?].Five large engraved maps (73 x 85 cm & 66 x 81 cm as framed; plate size 41 x 55 cm) showing the world, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. Each continent map includes 19 insets relevant to the regions shown: 9 city views at the head and 10 pair of costume figures flanking the map. The map of the Americas also has an inset map of Greenland. All 5 maps hand-coloured (probably by a later hand). Each map in a passe-partout and framed, under glass, the 4 continent maps in a uniform style. Five large and beautifully decorated hand-coloured maps from the great cartographers Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) and his son Joan Blaeu (ca. 1599-1673): a map of the world in two hemispheres and four maps showing the continents, published at the height of the firm's fame. Joan Blaeu made the world map to serve as the first of the more than 600 maps in his crowning achievement, his Atlas major, but it probably made its first appearance in updated versions of his Theatrum orbis terrarum. Speaking of this world map Shirley writes: "As with all productions by the firm of Blaeu, the engraving and layout and elegance of decoration are all of the highest standard". The identity of the two men flanking the gods at the head of the map left and right has been debated, but they most likely represent Galileo and Ptolemy respectively. NAUDé, Gabriel
Paris: Guillaume Pelé, 1642. On Bibliography and Politics, by the "Best Read Man in France," with a Letter by Hugo GrotiusWritten in Italy, and first published in Latin by Francisco Baba at Venice in 1633, Gabriel Naudé's Bibliographia politica, a kind of examination of the relationship between books and power, was in some ways a natural extention and elevation of his 1627 work, Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque, an essay on the nature of libraries and library science. It is not surprising that Charles Challine's French translation of the Bibliographie was published the same year Naudé began his tenure as the director and head librarian for the Bibliothèque Mazarine. Le grand rêve de Guy Naudé fut d'être celui-là!1A most interesting feature of Naudé's work is his inclusion of what we believe to be the first French translation of Hugo Grotius's famous letter to his friend … [Click Below for Full Description]

A remarkably objective tract seeking to reconcile Parliament and Charles I, likely appearing shortly after the outbreak of Civil War in August 1642, proposing (though one senses without much hope) a kingdom "at Unitie, at Libertie, at Peace". Modern gray boards, printed paper label, repairs (principally marginal) to first and last leaves, light browning, with good margins; the Taussig copy. No publisher stated, London, 1642.

PALLAVICINO, Ferrante.]
'Cambrai' (but Venice), [no printer], 1642. 12mo (136 x 72 mm), pp. [ii], 138, [4, blank]; faint dampstain in foot of last few leaves, upper margins occasionally trimmed a little close, a few light stains, but a good, crisp copy in eighteenth-century Italian mottled sheep, spine gilt; slightly rubbed, joints cracked but holding, some minor restoration.Extremely rare first edition, fourth variant (variant 'V'), of a classic of seventeenth-century erotic literature, the masterpiece of the celebrated satirist Ferrante Pallavicino (1615–1644). Published anonymously in Venice with a fictitious Cambrai imprint, The rhetoric of whores is a ferocious anti-Jesuit work in which the 15 lessons of the standard Jesuit rhetoric textbook, Cipriano Suarez's De arte rhetorica, are turned into lessons given by an experienced old prostitute to her young disciple.'More than any of his other books, The rhetoric of whores demonstrates why Pallavicino was the only Italian author of his epoch capable of a coherent vision that integrated satire, scepticism, and naturalistic morality . . . . Although Pallavicino claims in his introduction to be writing a morality tale about the false lures of commercial sex, he fooled no one, least of all the Inquisitiors of the Holy Office. It is obvious that the "artificial lies", "deceptions" (inganni), and "wickednesses" (ribalderie) of the courtesan were also the principal ingredients in a Jesuit education . . . . By systematically pursuing the parallels between rhetorical persuasion and erotic seduction, Pallavicino demonstrates how the high art of rhetoric ha … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Potter
Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield, 1642 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy of Francis Potter's work. Potter (1594-1678) was a clergyman with a wide range of other interests. He was an early member of the Royal Society (admitted in 1663), experimenting with bees, theorising about blood transfusion and making instruments including a sundial. He developed a theory that the approximate square root of 666 - 25 - had a strong connection with catholic institutions. His first attempt to set this out in 1637 was described as a 'wonderful discovery' by Joseph Mede, whose 'judgement' is included in the work. This copy has been rebacked, relaying as much as possible of the spine, which has raised bands, red title label and the date at the base. The corners have been rebuilt. The boards are marbled with a stain on the rear board. Edges are scuffed. Internally there is the armorial bookplate of William Legge to the front pastedown endpaper. The endpaper joints have been repaired. Page edges are red. Giacomo LAURO (1561-1645/50)
City plan from the Heroico Splendore delle Città del Mondo, a very rare work published for the first time in Rome in 1639 and afterwards completed with ten new works, in 1642. Giacomo Lauro, Roman as he used to sign himself, was a very skilled cartographer, engraver and publisher who worked in Rome between 1585 and 1637, the year of his death (altough some historical sources say he worked until 1650). Copper engraving, in excellent condition.
