DESCARTES, Rene.
Ludovicus Elzevirium, Amsterdam, 1642. TP + verso of TP = Errata + [i]-[xi] = Epistola + [xii]-[xviii] = Præfatio ad Lectorem + 1-496 [as issued - bound with] Objectiones Septimæ in Meditationes de Prima Philosophia cum notis Authoris (The Seventh Set of Objections with the Author's response). Amsterdam: Ludovicus Elzevirium. 1642. TP + 3-212 + 2 blank leaves, 12 mo. [two works in one volume - as issued] Second Edition of the Meditationes, First Edition of the Objectiones Septimæ. The first edition of Descartes' Meditations was published in Paris in 1641 - presenting the most detailed explanation of his metaphysical system. The six meditations follow Descartes as he categorically doubts everything he knows and then tries to discover a method whereby he can establish what, if anything, can be known with certainty. This book - along with the earlier presentation (Discours, 1637) of roughly the same ideas - was a foundational moment in Modern Philosophy and a seismic event in the history of Western ideas. That first edition also contained the six famous objections that Descartes had received from various commentators - who had been sent the work to prior to its publication. These included the Dutch theologian Johannes Caterus, various "theologians and philosophers" gathered by Descartes' friend and principal correspondent, Friar Marin Mersenne, the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, the theologian and logician Antoine Arnauld and the philosopher, Pierre Gassendi. This second edition was issued a year later with an additional 'Seventh Set of Objections' that had been sent to De … [Click Below for Full Description]

Israel SILVESTRE (Nancy, 1621 - Parigi, 1691).
Acquaforte, 1642, firmata in lastra in basso. Molto rara. Etching, 1642, signed on lower plate. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to platemark, perfectly executed repairs at the upper right center, otherwise in very good condition. Panoramic and uncommon view of the city, from the slopes of Mount Mario. The Basilica in the foreground has been depicted in detail, as is the view of the city, where many buildings can be identified. Silvestre was drawer and engraver; he was born in Nancy in 1621. Between 1638 and 1641 Silvestre travelled along Italy and there are many evidences of his presence in the Peninsula between 1643 and 165 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Africa] Basan, Alvaro de
1642. Madrid. Juan Sanchez. Folio (280 x 206 mm). 2 ff. Unbound. Lower margin a little cropped, not affecting text, minor spotting, else very good.- First edition. Rare imprint –one of two known copies-, with news of the capture, and looting of Carte (Oran, originally taken by Spanish forces in 1509); the imprint provides details of the Muslims who inhabit the region, populated mostly by “Xarifes Morabitos”; whom, according to the writer, descend directly from Mahoma, are reputed to be braver than common, and to have troubled the forces at Oran for long enough. Near Oran –where Spanish forces settled-, the Turks fortified a city called Carte, which made the Spanish restless, for the strategic military location of it. The core of the relation details the battle and military actions as that of Salomon Zaporta “de los primeros que entro en el lugar, y mato a un Moro cuerpo a cuerpo”, and the exposition of Luis de Cervantes, who entered the place, securing it, and making sure there was no “Moor” alive. 1642. Nice & Rare 1600s First Edition Antique Bible Thesaurus Book by Richard Bernard for your collection or library. See item description and pics. First Edition Rare Book Thesaurus Biblicus Seu Promptuarium Sacrum 1644/1642 Richard Bernard, England Item Description Note: All items in our store include NO sales tax to our US customers! Here is a nice antique and rare religious related book for your buying consideration. Would make a great gift or keep for yourself! The book was written by Richard Bernard and published by Felix Kingston of London, England. The book is made up of two sections. The Thesaurus in the front of the book was published in 1644 and the Bible's Abstract and Epitomie was printed in 1642. This is a first edition book from what we have researched online. The name of a previous owner, Hannah Sharp of Halifax, England is in ink in the front of the book. The book does have the smell of pipe tobacco to it, not cigarettes. The hardboard cover and back are still attached to the pages at the spine, there certainly is looseness. Wear and tear to the finish of the covers, much of the finish is still on the covers and spine. The leather covers have a tooled design on them. The book's pages are still well bound together. There is some browning around the edges, not foxing or brown spotting. No tears to the pages (except most of first blank pages of two missing in front), no water marks. The book does not have a musty/dusty smell to it. The pages are still quite flexible, not brittle at all. First page that has Bernard's picture on it is a little loose at the bind … [Click Below for Full Description]

VESALIUS, Andreas.
A handsome edition of Vesalius' Epitome, edited by the Dutch professor of anatomy Nicolaas Fonteyn. "A new edition of the Bauman-Geminus plates with text following the Botter editions of 1600-01 and 1617. There is an elaborate engraved title border, and in Fontanus' annotations to the Epitome there are three new figures (p. 14, showing the omentum of an infant; p. 20, a full-page plate of the viscera; p. 33, uterus and adnexa); otherwise the figures are all taken from Bauman's copperplates. In the preliminary matter there is a diverting piece entitled 'Drama Cercopithecium'. It has to do with a wise but petulant monkey which put mankind to ridicule in the best Rabelasian, or better, Jan-Steenian, manner. The Vesalius-Sylvius controversy is brought in by implication and Vesalius is made out [to be] a man who, unlike Galen who created men of monkeys, made monkeys of men..." (Cushing). Cushing VI.D.-13. "Third" [recté fourth] edition of the second English translation (by the encyclopaedist Ephraim Chambers) of one of the most influential handbooks of perspective ever published: Le perspective practique (Paris, 1642) by the Jesuit mathematician Jean Dubreuil (1602-1670). "Probably the most influential [work on perspective] ever published expressly for the use of a lay audience" (Millard), it is clearly and thoroughly illustrated with 150 full-page engravings printed from the original plates of the 1672 English edition, which were copied in mirror image from the original 1642 edition, plus 2 folding plates illustrating Hodgson's essay. It was especially important in England, where Robert Pricke published a translation already in 1672 and Chambers published the present improved translation in 1726. The title-page describes it as "highly necessary for painters, engravers, architects, embroiderers, statuaries, jewellers, tapestry-workers, and others concerned in designing." The 1739 edition introduced the present 16-page essay on the theory of perspective by James Hodgson, a fellow of the Royal Society and one of England's leading mathematicians, as well as the two folding plates that accompany it. With 19th-century owners' inscriptions at the head of the title-page: "J.G. Poole Southampton 1841" (struck through) and "... Bartlett Worthing" (initial unclear). Very slightly browned, with a transparent stain in the upper right corner of the tit … [Click Below for Full Description]

Amstelodami (Amsterdam): 1642.
[S.n.], [S.l. (Madrid)], 1642. First edition. Papered spine. 15 numbered leaves. Extremely scarce report on the first 'entradas' into the Amazon area, and the expedition of Pedro Teixeira, the first European to travel up the entire length of the river, and his return journey, accompanied by Cristóbal de Acuña. A highly important, contemporary document of the rivalry between the Franciscans and the Jesuits for the Amazon Valley. Borba de Moraes in Bibliographia Brasiliana states that the present work is "the only contemporary printed document to narrate the famous journey made by the Franciscans, Diego de Brieva and André de Toledo, who sailed down the Amazon River in October 1636, and arrived in Pará [Belém] in February 1637". He describes the document as of the greatest rarity, full of valuable information and great importance. Taylor, John
[London: 1642]. First edition, small 4to, pp. [8]; title-page woodcut; bound by Mackenzie in full olive morocco decorated in gilt, spine elaborately gilt, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers; joints rubbed, else very good. John Taylor, called "The Water Poet," was a waterman, collector of the wine fees for the Lieutenant of the Tower, and keeper of a public house at Oxford and Westminster. He wrote a vast number of pamphlets numbering some 138 on a variety of subjects which were first collected in 1630. Taylor was known for his eccentric exploits, one of which was sailing on the Thames in a boat made of brown paper. In this work the title-page contains an interesting woodcut which is from the block used for Taylor's "A Reply as true as Steele" (1641), reproduced in the catalogue of the Clawson Sale 1926. In this version the devil's horns were, however, removed from the block, so as to show him transformed into a Roundhead. Wise, Ashley Library, vol. 7, p. 92. [Attributes: First Edition]
