Karte (s. K.), aber der Schmuck ist völlig eigenständig. Mit Kalifornien als Insel. Schönes Kolorit im Stil der Zeit. Worldmap in two hemispheres, bordered by illustrations of the 4 elements at the bottom as well as the sun, moon at the top and the word "Jehova" in hebrew in the center, title bar above. The map is cartographically almost exact copied after A. Goos' engraving for J. Janssonius 1628 Atlas Minor, but the decoration is totally discrete. With California as an island.

Lyon: Jean-Antoine Huguetan the elder, 1641 Book. Fine. Hardcover. 2nd Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Systema cosmicum: in quo dialogis IV. de duobus maximis mundi systematibus, Ptolemaico et Copernicano, translated from Italian by Matthias Bernegger (1582-1640). Lyons: Jean-Antoine Huguetan the elder, 1641. 4to (228 x 173mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by C. Audran. Engraved additional title, title printed in red and black with engraved publisher's device. Woodcut illustrations and diagrams. With errata leaf 3D4. Variable spotting and browning, portrait and additional title skilfully repaired and reinserted, some leaves with repaired marginal tears and worming sometimes affecting catchwords. 17th-century English speckled calf, covers with blind-ruled borders, spine gilt in compartments with morocco lettering-piece, red edges (lightly chipped and scuffed, cracking on joints, rejointed, neat repairs to corners). Provenance: Sir William Dawes, Bt (1671-1724, chaplain in ordinary to King William III and Queen Anne, and Archbishop of York, bookplate on verso of title dated 1704). ---- Carli and Favaro 180; Cinti 109; Riccardi I, 1, 512, no. 10, 5. - Second Latin edition of the Dialogo, the summation of Galileo's astronomical work, and his celebrated advancement of the Copernican system in the form of an irrefutable hypothesis. The inconclusive debate on the subject between three participants which Pope Urban VIII had expected was hardly evident in the sure reasoning of Salviati, the pointed questioning of Sagredo, and the feeble responses of Simplicio (a figure sometimes equated with the Pope himself). While the hypothetical nature of the argument should not be forgotten, Galileo's book 'revels in the simplicity of Copernican thought and, above all, it teaches that the movement of the earth makes sense in philosophy, that is, in physics ... The Dialogo, more than any other work, made the heliocentric system a commonplace' (PMM). The Italian first edition (Florence: 1632) was banned by the Pope and withdrawn from circulation shortly after publication, leading to the author's trial and imprisonment a year later; it was followed by the first Latin edition, published in Strasbourg in 1635, which was translated by the history professor and mathematics enthusiast Matthias Bernegger at Galileo's request. Two important appendices by Kepler and Foscarini concerning the debate over the compatibility of the theory of the earth's movement with Scripture were also added to Galileo's text by Bernegger..

Of these 41 plates, nine are signed by Leoni. Three have elaborate engraved borders; the title engraving features a portrait of Pisani flanked by two putti. America Septentrionalis

Amsterdam: Jansson, [1641]. Copper-engraved map, full period hand- colouring. 22 5/8 x 25 inches. Hondius' important map of North America, here with glorious full period hand colouring. "Henricus Hondius' beautifully engraved map of North America had greater influence than any other to date in perpetuating the theory of California as an island ... Cartographically, this map is a careful composition of many different sources and illustrates well the current state of knowledge" (Burden). The mapping of the East coast of America is striking given the early date of the map. Fort Orange, the primary trading post on the Hudson (North River then), later to be Albany, is located. Further south, from the Chesapeake through the Gulf the map shows the benefits of the work of de Laet and Hessel Gerritz. In the north, the greatly mis-located Hudson's Bay includes recent discoveries by Thomas James, who explored the west coast of the Bay, in search of a westward passage in 1633. Henricus Hondius was the son of the engraver and mapmaker Jodocus Hondius. Henricus continued the family's cartographical business in partnership with Jan Jansson, his brother-in-law. Mapmaking was more often than not a family enterprise in Amsterdam and in Paris in the 17th century. The firm was active under one family member or another for nearly the entire 17th century. This was the period of Dutch supremacy at sea, when, having supplanted the Portuguese in India, central Africa and northeastern Brazil, the Dutch were the prime carriers of spices, silks, furs, tobacco, sugar and slaves. It was not in the nature of things that this predominance could last very long, if only because the Netherlands is a very small country. But until the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the 1660s and 70s, the Dutch were supreme, and the making of maps was a form of nationalistic journalism. First issued in 1636, the map appeared unchanged in various editions of the Hondius/Jansson atlas throughout much of the century. This copy an example of Burden's second state, with Jansson's imprint added. "Jansson was an extremely influential publisher and this depiction of the continent indicated the best that was known, as well as the great amount that remained unknown" (Martin & Martin). Mercury, or the Secret and Swift Messenger: Showing How a Man May With Privacy and Speed Communicate His Thoughts to a Friend at Any Distance

London: I. Norton for John Maynard and Timothy Wilkins, 1641. First edition of “the most important of early English works on cryptography” (Galland, p.201).

& & “A succinct volume, very well grounded in the classics, Mercury introduced the words cryptographia (defined by Wilkins as ‘secrecy writing’) and cryptologia (‘secrecy of speech’) into English. The author reserved the term cryptomeneses, or ‘private intimations,’ for the art of secret communication in general. In addition to summing up the knowledge of the time, Wilkins depicted three types of geometrical cipher, a mystifying system in which a message is represented by dots, lines or triangles. The letters of the alphabet, in normal or mixed order, were written out at normal spatial intervals; these served as the key. This line of letters was held at the top of a sheet of paper, and the message was spelled out by marking a dot for each plaintext letter underneath that letter in the key alphabet, each dot lower than its predecessor. The dots could then be connected by twos to form what would look like a graph – or they could be left as dots. The receiver, who had an identically proportioned key, noted the positions of the dots, the ends of the lines, or the apexes of the triangles against the alphabetical scale to read the plaintext.” (Kahn, p. 155).

& & There had been diplomatic cipher books in manuscript since Elizabethan times for envoys and military men, but this was the first printed book devoted to the subject in English. At the end Wilkins deals with modes of rapid communication, from carrier pigeons to smoke signals. He calls this ‘tachymenysis, or the art of swift information’.

& & J. S. Galland, An Historical and Analytical Bibliography of the Literature of Cryptology, 1945; D. Kahn, The Codebreakers. The Story of Secret Writing, 1996; Wing W2202. 8vo: 163 x 107 mm. The text complete with 95 leaves, but paginated pp. [xiv], 1-48, 65-80, 83-98, 81-128, 127-169, 180, without the preliminary blank [A1] and the terminal blanks [M7-8] (as usual). Title and text within ruled borders. Contemporary calf, spine with some professional leather restoration, inner hinges strengthened with Japan paper. Annotationes in Libros Evangeliorum

Amsterdam -Apud &Cornelium13 by 9; 1060[85],[36]pp., 1641 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Agood copy of this work, in a recent binding. Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) was a prodigious Dutch lawyer. He entered Universityat Leyden at 12; and was appointed Historian of the States General at 18, and Advocate Fiscal at 24. He travelled to England in a diplomatic capacity in 1613, before becoming Pensionary of Rotterdam. His Arminian theology and attempts to facilitate peace between theologically-opposed factions earned him a life sentence in 1618; although he escaped to Paris in 1621. He attempted to return to Holland in 1631, but was banished and settled in Sweden. In 1635 he returned to Paris in an ambassadorial capacity for the Kingdom of Sweden. He was killed in a shipwreck on a voyagehomein 1645. Within his 'Annotations,' he applies philological criticism to the text of the Bible whilst contemporaneouslymoderating them with the assertion that (as in law) convention plays an enormously important role in theology, such that correct interpretation of the scriptures requires respect for the Church's traditions. Condition: Half-calf binding with tailpieces; very firmly bound. Bookplate for Prof. David Arthur Pailin on front pastedown. Title-page in red and black with emblematic device, laid down, with date of publication writtenin old ink both in Arabic numerals and in words in Latin;edgesof some leaves a little worn, especially at beginning of volume; wormholes in bottom margin of pp. 1-34 and side margin of pp. 215-224; some damp staining and some of the paper is soft at theedges; edges of leaves coloured blue; tear in p. 209. Overall: VERY GOOD..
