SOMNER, William
London, printed by I[ohn] L[egat] for Richard Thrale, 1640. FIRST EDITION. 4to. pp.[xvi], 516, [xiv], 3 fldg. plates, one a map. Roman and Italic letter, full page woodcut arms of Canterbury on verso of title, woodcut and typographical headpieces, floriated woodcut initials, early binder’s record and price on front f. e-p. A very good copy, in handsome contemporary calf, covers bordered with a double blind rule, spine with raised bands, blind ruled in compartments, red morocco label gilt, edges gilt ruled, a.e.r. lower corners a little worn. A handsome copy of the first edition of Somner’s important description of the town of Canterbury and more particularly the Cathedral, finely illustrated with plates and a map. “The Antiquities of Canterbury, true to its title, deals with ‘antiquities’: it is concerned only with that which is the work of civilization, and, its subject being Canterbury, it is not a country description, but an urban description. . while Somner takes some basic notice of architecture, he does so in order to help determine age rather than to appreciate the impression a building might make on a visitor or resident. It is only in describing his beloved Cathedral that there is some betrayal of such sentiments . .Somner takes his readers on a veritable guided tour of Canterbury Cathedral, a … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHENK, Pieter.
A magnificent series of views of the house and gardens of "De Voorst," the country estate of Arnold Joost van Keppel, Baron of Ashford, Margrave of Bury and Count of Albemarle, built by the architect Jacob Roman (1640-ca. 1716). It is the third of six sets of similar views of estates that were also issued together in 1702.Van Keppel (1669/70-1718), a favourite in the court of the Dutch Stadtholder Willem III, inherited the estate west of Zutphen in 1686. After the Stadtholder ascended to the English throne as William III in 1688, he bestowed numerous honours and titles on Van Keppel. Around 1700, largely at the King's expense, Van Keppel replaced the modest buildings and grounds with the lavish palace and gardens that came to be known as the Versailles of the Achterhoek. After the death of Van Keppel's widow the estate declined, parts were torn down in the nineteenth century, and the lavish interior was destroyed by fire in 1943. The estate still survives as restored in the 1950s and 1990s, but the present set of views gives a detailed view of the buildings, gardens and fountains when they were new.The plates in later impression, but otherwise in very good condition. Wrappers restored with adhesive tape.l The Anglo-Dutch Garden 74; Hollstein XXV, p. 295, nos. 1667-1682; Springer, Bibl. overzicht, pp. 43-44.

1640. Condition: Good. Very good text block, binding need work. Scarce and desirable George Sandy(or Sandes) 1640 4th(1st being 1626) and last edition in Sandy's lifetime. This copy has the often missing double frontispiece plus the dated title page. It is complete except for two engravings at the beginning of book 1 and 9. There are 15 books(chapters), with a full page copper engraving preceding each book. Even the original blank end pages are present, which helps to make this a fairly easy rebind. The original(I believe) boards are flat and solid, though some small leather chips are present in a few places. The spine label/leather is detached but present(shown). The text block is mostly even with the gatherings uniformly bound and solidly threaded. There is one proud leaf and the first few pages are attached to the unbound front board. The rear board is detached as well. The pages are clean and undamaged for the most part. There are a couple minor smudges, but they are not foxed or stained. There is some minor uniform waviness and some very short edge wear and tear. I saw no folds or rips. All the engravings are in very nice condition. Other than a short modern pencil notation on the first blank end page, there is no writing or marks of any kind. The last page states: Imprimatur Tho. Wykes Octob.12 1640 London Printed for Andrew Hebb, at the Figne of the Bell in Saint Pauls Church Yard. 1640 The book is 13 1/2" x 9". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[LE PAUTRE, Jean and Pierre, and others].
[498] engr. ll., numbered in about 50 series.Magnificent collection of about 50 complete series of engravings of all kinds of ornaments and architectural details, mostly by Jean and Pierre Le Pautre. In the late seventeenth century, the enterprising Parisian print publisher Nicolas Langlois I (1640-1703) assembled numerous print series displaying designs for ornament, furniture, metalwork, interior decoration, architecture and gardens. He published them together under a general title, bound in one, two or more volumes with no table of contents and with a varying collection of print series from ca. 1655 to the time of publication. While several print publishers in Rome had issued collections of previously published and new print series already in the 16th-century, Langlois took the idea a step further by giving his collections a general title-page. In this respect his publication can be called the first French encyclopedia of ornament, decorative arts and architecture. With the 2 general title-page slightly browned and worn, and the last few leaves of volume 2 with minor water stains, but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional spot, small marginal tear or other minor blemish. Rebacked. An extensive collection of French architectural ornamentation by some of the greatest masters of the age of Louis XIV.l BAL 2712; Fuhring, Ornament prints 1, 889-996 passim, etc.; cf. REYNING, Jan Erasmus (as told to David van der STERRE).
[6], “134” [= 136], [6] pp.Rare first and only edition of the heroic exploits of the famous Dutch pirate, privateer and naval officer Jan Erasmus Reyning (1640-1697). His close friend, a Curaçao doctor, wrote down his stories and published them. Reyning's adventurous career began at age ten when he went to sea with his father, who was killed in battle when they served on a privateering ship a couple years later. Jan Erasmus was taken prisoner during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667), and went into the service of a French plantation on the island of Hispaniola. Around 1667 he became a buccaneer in the jungles around Santo Domingo, and between 1669 and 1672 he appears to have fought as a privateer captain with French or English letters of marque. He and his partner Jelle Lecat worked with such notorious pirates as Roche Braziliano and Henry Morgan. In 1672, with the Netherlands at war with England and France, he left Spanish service to protect the Dutch colony of Curaçao, earning him a reputation as a sort of Robin Hood and the gratitude of the Dutch West India Company. After returning to the Netherlands he served as an officer in the Dutch marine, dying in a storm in the Bay of Biscay in 1697.An object apparently once placed between C1 and C2 left some rust-coloured stains in the text near the gutter margin and there are occasional marginal stains or chips, but the book is still in good condition and only slightly trimmed. A vivid picture of the pleasures and violence of life among pirates of the Caribbean: it would make a good movie.l Klaversma & Hannema 1381; Sabin 69 … [Click Below for Full Description]

FOUILLOUX, Jacques du.
[4], 124, [4] ll.The 1640 Paris edition of Fouilloux's classic and beautifully illustrated work on hunting, first published ca. 1560, here with the numerous additions first included in the Paris editions of 1573 and 1585, but lacking the second part on hawking (noted on the title-page) that was also added in the 1585 Paris edition. It discusses and illustrates numerous hunting dogs, the hunting of stags, wild boars, hares, foxes and badgers, tools (illustrated both separately and in use) and other equipment, and the medication of dogs. In addition to the main work, it includes the two poems also included in nearly all editions ("l'Adolescence de Jacques du Fouiloux, ..." and "Complaint du cerf, a Monsieur du Fouilloux", the latter by Guillaume Boucher) as well as further material added in 1573 and 1585 (a 1573 letter to the princes of France, Gaston de Foix's poem for lovers of the hunt, Jaques du Fouilloux's "Du rangier ou ranglier ...", the "Adjonctions à la Venerie" and more). With an early owner's name blotted out on the title-page, leaving a small stain on the next 3 leaves. Lacking the much shorter part 2 on hawking, but with the main part on hunting complete. With the title-page somewhat worn, but otherwise in good condition, with only a minor defects. Binding with minor wear and a few stains, but also good. An extensively and beautifully illustrated edition of a classic hunting book.l Bibl. Mun. LAIRESSE, Gerard de.
[16], 115, [1 blank]; [4], 16 pp.Second edition of a popular practical manual teaching the art of drawing by the famous Dutch painter Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711). The book is divided into two parts, the first part teaching young children in 12 lessons the principles of drawing based on geometry, and in the second part a more advanced course is given in 10 so-called "propositions" for professional art students, including a detailed plan for the installation of an Art Academy. Gerard de Lairesse, sometimes called the Dutch Poussin, devoted himself to teaching after he became blind in 1690. Being a classicist, his theories were mainly based on Junius's De pictura Veterum, and on Charles Dufresnoy's De arte graphica, but the practical side of his teaching, based on his own lifelong experience, gives his text books their special interest and importance. The treatise by Segner teaches how to construct lamps which were economic and efficient and also spared the artist's eye-sight. The plates extensively show how to construct such lamps as well as their oil-reservoirs. Slightly browned, with some faint, marginal foxing on only a few pages. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities with some restorations to the spine. A very good copy in attractive binding.l Bierens de Haan 2609; Kunst op schrift 137.

HERMANN, Paul.
[20], 699, [1] pp.First edition of a botanical catalogue of about 3300 plants in the botanical garden of Leiden University (106 illustrated), compiled and apparently drawn by Paul Hermann (1640-1695). Hermann had only recently introduced many to Europe from the East Indies, Ceylon, the Cape and America. Most entries give the Latin name of the plant with references to the literature; some give more detailed descriptions. Hermann, born in Halle an der Saale, sailed with the VOC (Dutch East India Company) to Ceylon in 1672 and collected many plants there. As a professor of botany and medicine at Leiden University, he directed the University botanical garden from 1679 to his death in 1695. He made it the richest garden in Europe during the Dutch golden age, always looking over his shoulder at his leading competitor, Jan Commelin at the Amsterdam botanical garden. “He did excellent, vigorous work in depicting his plants” (Hunt Lib.). His premature death prevented publication of a planned second part.Since the frontispiece and all botanical illustrations are on integral leaves, references to copies with 107 “plates” apparently include the frontispiece in the count. It is not certain who engraved the botanical plates, but the frontispiece is signed by A. de Blois and is made after W. van Mieris. With some marginal annotations, mostly in the lower margin of the plates. Some minor foxing, 2 leaves are quite loose, but otherwise in good condition.l Hunt 378; Kuijlen & Wijnands 78; Nissen, ZBI, 859; South African bibl., p. 345; Stafleu & Cowan 2684; STCN 832521558; Landwehr, VOC 599; n … [Click Below for Full Description]

[CHÈVREMONT, Jean Baptiste de].
286 pp.First edition of the first European rendition of a Middle Eastern story. The author, the abbot of Chèvremont (1640-1702), was a lover of Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, especially Georgia. He first wrote another travel book about this region titled La connaissance du monde, voyages orientaux (Paris, 1695). The present Histoire et les avantures de Kemiski Georgienne is the sequel to that first story. In 1702 he published his L'etat actuel de la Pologne, a lengthy description of Poland.Maria Kemiski was a Georgian woman who first appeared in the writings of Mehemet Reis Effendi "one of the greatest minds of Asia". Kemiski was a great beauty, who travelled with the son of the Cherif of Mecca, Alekes, throughout the Middle East. They visited Messina, Morea, Mecca, Turkey and other Arabian lands. With the bookplate of Antoine M. Bélard by R. Thiolloère on paste-down and his name stamped on title-page. [THE GREAT TURKISH WAR].
[2], 7, [1] pp.Very rare pamphlet published during the European wars against Turkey, with a frontispiece portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Léopold I (1640-1705), Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary. He succeeded his father Ferdinand III in 1657 and immediately had to fight against the Turks in the Great Turkish War, also known as the War of the Holy League (1683-1699). This war finally led to the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699.This work gives directions and arrangements for ritual processions that the Turkish Sultan Suleiman III ordered after his victories during the so-called Holy Wars against the Christians. It is of great importance for our understanding of the problematic Turkish-European relations during the 17th century, especially as an interesting example of counter-propaganda. One of Suleiman III's directions presented in the book, for example, ordered that one Christian slave or one Jew was to be killed every fifteen minutes as part of the procession. One can imagine the reaction of a Christian reading this text: although the crusades were over, this could provoke war and violence between the parties.Wrappers worn and somewhat frayed, a few worm holes, but still in good condition.l Bibliotheca bibliographica Aureliana CX, XVIIe siècle, XIV (Bordeaux), 2176 (not mentioning the portrait); cf. GOETEERIS, Anthonis.
[1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [2], 157 [1 blank] pp., including the engraved title-page, but not the 4 double-page plates.Last and rarest (1640) issue of the first (and only early) edition of a richly illustrated and extremely interesting and important account of a Dutch embassy to Russia in the years 1615 to 1616: an essential primary source for any study of 17th-century Russia (and Scandinavia). The 23 etched views are among the earliest of northwest Russia and its border areas. It was first published in 1619 by Aert Meuris and both the text and the illustrations are here still in the 1619 printing, with only the two title-pages newly printed (in spite of the title-page's "second printing, enlarged and improved"!), so that the beautifully drawn and finely etched illustrations remain crisp and clear. The embassy travelled first by ship to Reval (now Tallin, Estonia) then overland via Narva (Estonia) to the regions around Pskov, Novgorod and Staraja Russa. On their return Goeteeris wrote the present account of the voyage and embassy, one of the most accurate accounts of 17th-century Russia, with not only historical and statistical information, but also descriptions of the Russian cities, villages and countryside, as well as the customs and habits of the people. He illustrated the whole with the drawings he made during the voyage and embassy. With a small tear into the text of 1 leaf (repaired), a small stain in the margin of the engraved title-page and an occasional faint water stain, but still in good condition. The hinges are cracked, the head of the spine chipped and som … [Click Below for Full Description]

1640. This is an excellent example of cartography, from the premier lineage of map makers. Janson was an articulate engraver and cartographer with a fine aesthetic appeal. Looking at the manner in which mountains and forests were portrayed, we see the hand of a master. Here we see fine crisp lines, as well as softer curving detail. This map shows a northern section of France, giving us towns, rivers, as well as topography. An attractive and rare map 14.75 x 19.5

Blaeu-- Joan
MAP OF ASIA"Asia Noviter Delineata." Carte-a-figures by Willem Blaeu depicting the native manners of dress, and nine city plans and views at the top.?Copper engraving printed in 1640, coloured by a later hand. Size 41 x 55,2 cm.A fine example of Willem Blaeu's famous map of Asia. Like the Blaeu Africa map, this is a map that appeals both to a sense of cartographic history and to an aesthetic sense of beauty. This is a cornerstone, folio-size map of Asia and is one of the better known, more decorative maps of Asia of the 17th century. This map is basically a reduction of Blaeu's wallmap of Asia of 1608. The map contains extensive details on what was known of Asia in the early 17th century. Korea is still an enlonged island. Japan has a predominantly east to west direction. In China, the Great Wall is shown along with the in-land lakes.Willem Janszoon, or Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) as he is more commonly known, was one of the most noted Dutch cartographers and map publisher of the 17th century. Blaeu's maps are "esteemed by collectors for their decorative quality, historical importance, and as the highest expression of Dutch cartographic art during the period of its supremacy" (Tooley, p 28).After preparation as a pupil of the great Danish astronomer,Tycho Brahe, Blaeu initially concentrated on globe making and separately published maps, including wall maps of the continents. From 1608, he dominated the market for sea atlases and in 1630 produced his terrestrial atlas. These atlases were continued by his sons, culminating in the great Atlas Maior of 1662 in 11 volumes with … [Click Below for Full Description]
