1640. Condition: Good. Very good text block, binding need work. Scarce and desirable George Sandy(or Sandes) 1640 4th(1st being 1626) and last edition in Sandy's lifetime. This copy has the often missing double frontispiece plus the dated title page. It is complete except for two engravings at the beginning of book 1 and 9. There are 15 books(chapters), with a full page copper engraving preceding each book. Even the original blank end pages are present, which helps to make this a fairly easy rebind. The original(I believe) boards are flat and solid, though some small leather chips are present in a few places. The spine label/leather is detached but present(shown). The text block is mostly even with the gatherings uniformly bound and solidly threaded. There is one proud leaf and the first few pages are attached to the unbound front board. The rear board is detached as well. The pages are clean and undamaged for the most part. There are a couple minor smudges, but they are not foxed or stained. There is some minor uniform waviness and some very short edge wear and tear. I saw no folds or rips. All the engravings are in very nice condition. Other than a short modern pencil notation on the first blank end page, there is no writing or marks of any kind. The last page states: Imprimatur Tho. Wykes Octob.12 1640 London Printed for Andrew Hebb, at the Figne of the Bell in Saint Pauls Church Yard. 1640 The book is 13 1/2" x 9". [Attributes: Hard Cover]

FULLER, Thomas
Cambridge: R. Daniel, for Thomas Buck, and are to be sold by John Williams, 1640. 1640 History of Holy War CRUSADES Jerusalem anti-ISLAM Ottoman Map Thomas FullerThomas Fuller was a 17th-century English historian who particularly notable for his historical accounts of English worthies and the Church of England. In 1639, Fuller wrote 'History of the Holy War' - a popular book on the Crusades, taken from several notable and accurate accounts. It is curious though, Fuller wrote this work with an incredible amount of wit and humor, so much so that he included stories unrelated to the Crusades just to fill pages! According to Tyerman, "Thomas Fuller's 'History of the Holy Warre is one of the more interesting histories of the crusades written by an Englishman."While many works concerning the Crusades were written and published over the 17th- and 18th-centuries, Thomas Fuller's was the first Anglican view of the Crusades and the first in English following the Reformation. Modern Crusades scholars such as Christopher Howse describe Fuller's account as a mocking of the Crusades and the allure of Islamic pilgrimage. Fuller was even known to have said that Islam was "the scum of Judaisme and Paganisme sod together, and here and there strewed over with a spice of Christianitie"Exceptionally rare and valuable edition!Item number: #11233Price: $1500FULLER, ThomasThe historie of the holy warreCambridge: Printed by R. Josephus Flavius, (Thomas Lodge translator))
London: printed for John Waterson, 1640. Heavy wear of the cover, 811 pages plus table at back in good condition with some toning, foxing, staining, some neat underling and flaws but nothing major. Front cover split at hinge but secure. PLEASE NOTE: the first English edition was published in London in 1602. This is an edition, later printing of 1640. What makes this edition special is: "Whereunto are newly added the references of the Scriptures throughout the History and afterwards collected into a Table" Which the 1602 edition did not have and should be a valuable tool. It is at the back after the many page Table at the back (see photos). The paper this was printed on is of such good quality it has held up well. Of interest is the name "Buckingham" hand written on top of the title page. This is a large heavy book. At this time I can only offer this exclusively to U.S. buyers and addresses. I am selling this as-is but if you buy it and are very unhappy I will accept a return within ten days of your receiving the book. Meaning by ten days it must be in the mail heading back to me. I suspect you will be delighted and wish to keep it. I am set on having happy customer, please have a look at my feedback.

BREREWOOD (Edward).
Paris, Olivier de Varennes, 1640. In-8. 11ff. 338pp. (i.e. 328). L’intérêt des recherches contenues dans ce livre, que Larousse qualifie de "très-curieux et très-estimé", a notamment été mis en relief par Margaret T. Hodgen dans son étude "Early Anthropology in the 16th and 17th centuries": "The two related wings of degeneration theory – that associated with Renaissance pessimism and that tied to ethnological phenomena – were brought together in 1614 in Edward Brerewood’s perceptive little book on the geographical distribution of languages and religions (.) Brerewood was also probably the first man to apply mathematical analysis to cultural and religious phenomena, and this in conjuction with a similar treatment on the origin and diffusion of languages". Brunet, I, 1223. Graesse, I, 529. Cf. Harmensz van Rijn detto REMBRANDT
Acquaforte e puntasecca, datata e firmata in lastra in basso a destra "Rembrandt f. 1640". Etching and drypoint, signed and dated at lower left "Rembrandt f. 1640". Example of second state of two. with additional shading in thebackground, and on neck and shoulder of St. John. In-8. 11ff. 338pp. (i.e. 328). The two related wings of degeneration theory - that associated with Renaissance pessimism and that tied to ethnological phenomena - were brought together in 1614 in Edward Brerewood's perceptive little book on the geographical distribution of languages and religions (...) Brerewood was also probably the first man to apply mathematical analysis to cultural and religious phenomena, and this in conjuction with a similar treatment on the origin and diffusion of languages".Infimes traces de vers dans la marge inférieure de quelques feuillets. Bon exemplaire dans son vélin d'origine. Brunet, I, 1223. Graesse, I, 529. Cf. Hodgen, "Early Anthropology in the 16th and 17th centuries" (1998).

JONSON, Ben
London: Richard Bishop, 1640. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Jonson is regularly considered the second-most popular English playwright, only to, of course, Shakespeare. His complete works, while not as numerous as that of Shakespeare, were widely read throughout Europe. One of his more controversial works was 'Cynthia's Revels', a satirical play based on the theatrical battles between English playwrights Marston and Dekker and tells the story using Roman gods. This 1640 folio edition is from the complete works of Johnson published by Richard Bishop.

ROSCOMMON, WENTWORTH DILLON, fourth earl of, (1637-1685)]
1640. Late 19th- early 20th century full calf. Quarto (225 mm x 172 mm x 12 mm). Foliation 46, plus several blanks. Text to rectos and bordered throughout. Extensively annotated to versos. This manuscript adds interesting details to a period in Roscommon’s life about which very little is known or agreed upon by sources – namely his exile on the Continent throughout his boyhood and adolescence. Roscommon was a nobleman and poet. He was raised as a Protestant, his father having been converted from Catholicism by James Ussher, Primate of Ireland. Roscommon’s uncle Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford and Lord Deputy of Ireland, sent him to study at his own seat in Yorkshire. After Strafford’s impeachment for High Treason in 1640 (and execution the next year), he was sent to Caen in Normandy to study at a Protestant university. During his exile as a Royalist during the English Civil War he toured France and Germany and spent a significant time in Rome. He returned to England shortly after the Restoration and regained his father’s and grandfather’s properties, including several estates in Ireland, in 1660. He pursued a career in military service, gained a reputation (partly owing to his love of gambling) as a duelist, and was a member of a literary circle that included John Dryden. Indeed, it is as a poet and translator that we remember him now. This manuscript was, as the title indicates, written for use by “Monsieur Wentworth” by Jacques Louvel (c.1600–1680), Professor of Mathematics at the Collège du Bois and Professor of Writing at the Collège des Arts, both at the University … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILSON, John.
[St. Omer: English College Press], 1640. 8vo (145 × 95 mm), pp. [16], 294, [8]. Device of the Society of Jesus on title page. Some waterstaining, most noticeable on title and opening leaves. Contemporary calf, expertly repaired. Later inscription ('From H. G. [?]Cany to Father Theodore' to front free endpaper. A very good copy. Second edition (first 1608, also Saint Omer). A martyrology by the Jesuit priest John Wilson (c. 1575-1645), master of the College Press at St Omer. 'During the first half of the 17th century the English College Press at St. Omer, France, under the direction of John Wilson, SJ, was the most important source of the proscribed Catholic literature that nourished the piety and loyalty of English recusants' (Catholic Encyclopedia). Wilson's origins were in Staffordshire. He evidently converted as a young man and entered the English college at Rome in 1603, being ordained in 1605. He took over the St Omer press in 1608. 'Although described in the title as an 'English Martyrologie', the calendar's subjects are drawn from all parts of Britain and Ireland. Saints commemorated in the month of January, for example, include: 'S. Meliorus Martyr' of Cornwall, 'S. Croniacke Confessor' of Scotland, 'S. Beno Priest and Confessor of North Wales' and S. Eoglodius Monke and Confessor' of Ireland. Organized by chronology rather than geography and mingling saints of different regions on the same page, Wilson's text offers a vision of encompassing Catholicism that integrates multiple kingdoms, nations and peoples of the Atlantic archipelago' (Highley, ''The Lost British … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1502 he was sent as the Florentine envoy to the court of Cesare Borgia, duke of Valentinois. In Borgia he found an audacious and strong willed leader capable of deception and violence to achieve his ends, yet a man who appeared at all times both controlled and diplomatically prudent. Borgia provided the model for Machiavelli's ideal prince, Valentino. His book addressed the problem of the unification of a self-reliant Italy."It was Machiavelli's intense preoccupation with this problem- what a state is and how to found one in existing circumstances- which caused the many riddles of his speculative writings ... He was by no means indifferent to private virtue ... but in the realm of politics he postponed morals to political expediency" (Britannica 11th ed.)."The Prince is far more than a book of directions to any one of the many Italian princelings. ... Machiavelli founded the science of modern politics on the study of mankind. ... Politics was a science to be divorced entirely from ethics, and nothing must stand in … [Click Below for Full Description]
