         A Set of Six Peonies)

Nuremberg and Eichstatt 1640 - Six copper engraved plates with hand-colour. Plate size: 50cm x 44 cm. Magnificent plates from "Hortus Eystettensis", one of the earliest and most famous works in the field. The Hortus Eystettensis is a pictorial record of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, that of Prince Bishop of Eichstatt, Johann Conrad von Gemmingen. The garden was begun by Joachim Camerarius in 1596 and, after his death in 1598, completed by Basil Besler, a pharmacist from Nuremberg. A visitor, Philipp Hainhofer, in 1611 marvelled at the eight gardens, each containing 'flowers from a different country; they varied in the beds and flowers, especially in the beautiful roses, lilies, tulips.' The Hortus records this variety and beauty. The book is exceptional in every sense; in its variety and range of flowers, in its size, in its fine quality of engraving. It is also one of the earliest records of flowers from a specific, documented garden. Besler was asked to complete the work by Gemmingen in 1606; the huge nature of the task was clear to Besler and he enlisted the help of his younger brother Hieronymus and Ludwig Jungermann, a nephew of Camerarius. Printing the Hortus may have begun as early as 1607. Drawings were made in situ and from specimens sent by the Bishop to Nuremberg; the Bishop reported to Hainhofer that he had boxes of fresh flowers sent every week to Besler at Nuremberg for sketching. A team of at least 10 engravers were employed to translate the drawings to copperplates. The gardens, along with most of the town of Eichstatt, were destroyed by the invading Swedish troops under Herzog Bernhard von Weimar in 1633-4, although they were partially restored by later bishops. Many of the original drawings survive in the University Library, Erlangen. Nissen 158; Pritzel 745; Hunt 430; Blunt, pp 95-97; Stafleu & Cowan 497

         Mappa Aestivarum Insularum Alias Barmudas.

1640 - Amsterdam, 1662, Latin edition. Original colour. 400 x 530mm. Near mint condition A large paper copy of this fine map of the islands, based on Richard Norwood's map as published by John Speed in 1627. The plate has an interesting history: it was engraved by Jodocus Hondius II, the son of the Jodocus Hondius who engraved the Speed plates and republished the Mercator atlas. When Jodocus II died in 1629 the plate was sold to Blaeu, forcing the Hondius firm to have another plate engraved. A miniature version of the island has been inserted just under the title cartouche to show the position of the islands against the American mainland, seen across the top of the map. This led later cartographers, including Moll, Le Rouge and Zatta (in 1778!) to include the miniature as an extra island. KOEMAN: Bl 57; PALMER: p.8, plate III.

         I.Orchis Serapias secunda Dodonaei.

1640 - copper engraved plate; overall size c 53 x 43 cm; plate size c 48 x 40 cm. 2nd edition. no text on verso. recent hand colouring.- A magnificent print from the ‘Hortus Eystettensis’ [The Garden of Eichstatt], one of the most amazing botanical books of the 17th century ever produced!- Basilius Besler, an apothecary and botanist from Nurnberg, was the curator of the prince bishop, Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The bishop took great pride in the gardens of his palace, Willibaldsburg, which rivalled other magnificent gardens in Europe, and asked Besler to compile a codex of all the plants growing there which, initially, was started in 1596 and designed by Joachim Camerius the Younger (1534-1598). It took Besler 16 years to complete the task; unfortunately, the bishop died weeks before the publication of the Hortus. - The garden was sacked by Swedish troops in 1633/4 during the 30 Year War but re-opened in 1998 after reconstruction, following closely the outline of the book.- What makes the Hortus so unique is that instead of portraying medicinal or culinary plants, the emphasis was on garden flowers, herbs, vegetables and exotic plants. These were depicted almost life size with great detail, and arranged artistically and pleasing to even the modern eye, with an average of 3 plants on one sheet. This arrangement made up a total of 1084 plants on 367 copper engravings on 368 large folio sized sheets. - First published in 1613, 300 copies were printed which took over four years to sell. Two version were produced of the first edition: one with text on verso of the plant print, intended as reference books; the second without text, on quality paper and lavishly hand-coloured, used as presentation or subscriber copies. In 1640 and 1713, two further editions were published. - The luxury version sold for an exorbitant 500 florins, while the plain, uncoloured copies went for 35 florins each. Besler could finally purchase a comfortable home in a fashionable part of Nürnberg at a price of 2 500 florins – five coloured copies' worth of ‘Hortus Eystettensis'!- de Belder 23, 24, 25; Nissen 158- Paper oat meal coloured; hand written annotation in margin; margins cut down; on verso: remnants of paper tape from framing; plate darker than usual; o/w vg cond.

Nuremberg 1640 - This splendid folio botanical engraving is from Basilius Besler's rare and highly sought after work "Hortus Eystettensis, sive Diligens et accurata omnium Plantarum, Florum, Stirpium, ex variis orbis terrae partibus, singulari studio collectarum, quae in celeberrimis viridariis arcem episcopalem ibidem cingentibus, olim conspiciebantur delineatio et ad vivum". The print available is from the second edition published in 1640 in Nuremberg and Eichstatt. --- The engraving was printed on superior chain-linked, watermarked paper. This edition is often more desirable because the text is not printed on verso and thus does not bleed through to the image. --- Bishop-prince Johann Konrad von Gemmingen created a magnificent garden to praise God and celebrate the diversity of creation. In the early 1600s, the bishop-prince commissioned Basilius Besler to create a catalogue of his garden and thus "Hortus Eystettensis" was produced. --- Besler’s work, which depicted over 1100 specimens, is still widely considered one of the best botanical works ever created. Most of the plants depicted were drawn at their actual size. The first edition of the work was printed in 1613 and consisted of only about 300 copies. Hortus Eystettensis is truly a masterpiece and one of the most comprehensive and alluring botanical works ever produced. In the preface to an 1806 edition, Franz Seraph Widmann said ".by reason of.the magnificence of its engravings, [this work] deserves to rank high among the rarest works of its kind." --- Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions. The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. The work is from 1640 so minor imperfections due to age are to be expected, and most imperfections (if present) can be noted in the pictures. Early edition of the Dutch translation of a provisional agreement made between the Dutch States General and the Portuguese ambassador Francisco de Zousa Continho on the jurisdiction and territory of Fort Galle in Ceylon (Sri Lanka), one of the most important outposts both strategically and as a trading centre. The Dutch had captured it from the Portuguese in 1640 and they had been fighting in the region since that time. The treaty notes the losses and battles caused by the dispute between the two powers and the demands made by the Dutch government to secure their position in the East Indies. This includes their demand for a yearly supply of cinnamon, through which the Portuguese are to pay off their debt, and restitution by both parties for the losses they caused one another. The parties agree to honor the treaty and not trespass on each other's rights and territories. In very good condition.
