        Tulip Drawing].

Holland 18th century - Watercolour on Dutch laid paper, excellent condition, some mild browning. Dimensions: 180 by 130mm. (7 by 5 inches). From a "Tulip Book", in the manner of Anthony Claesz who produced his own "Tulip Book" in c.1641. These florilegia were commissioned to illustrate the differences between varieties of tulip bulb which at the time demanded such high prices. The beauty of these works ensured that their images would be copied for decades to come by amateur painters and gardeners alike. Claesz was a Dutch master in his own right, with several highly accomplished works to his name. However, as with most of the great Dutch masters of this period, they happily supplemented their income by illustrating such books. It also allowed them to study in detail subjects that would later be incorporated in their great flower pieces. Provenance: Private Dutch collection.

        Cases of Treason

LONDON: Printed by the assignes of John More, and sold by Matthew Walbancke and William Coke, 1641 A good copy of this scarce work, as issued in leaflet form with the title page and reverse of the final page darkened, having acted as a binding. Published after Bacon's death, this work is of particular interest because of Bacon's involvement in the treason charge against his former patron, the Earl of Essex. He was a member of the legal team lead by the Attorney General, Lord Coke and drafted the initial account of the trial. The title page and reverse of the back page are darkened but the internal text is in good to very good condition with some light toning to edges and a small mark at the page affecting about 4 leaves. Gauden, 1605-1662, bishop of Worcester, putative author of the "Eikon Basilike." At the Restoration in 1660 he was made Bishop of Exeter, and in 1662 was translated, not as he hoped, to Winchester, but to Worcester. Scarce. Wing G362; ESTC R5024.         Secrets publichs.

History of Catalonia. History of Spain.

Moses and Aaron. Civil and Ecclesiastical Rites, Used by the Ancient Hebrewes; observed, and at large opened, for the clearing of many obscure Texts thorowout the whole scripture

London: Printed by E.G. and are to be sold by John Williams. 1641. Sixth edition. Ownership Signature of Hester Maria Thrale. Quarto: [8], 264 [i.e. 270], [10] pp. Lacks gathering E (pp. 25-32). With four printer's blank leaves at the front and three at the back. Text interleaved throughout with printer's blank leaves. Bound in late 19th Century full black leather decorated in gilt, black suede endpapers, with modest wear at the spine ends, tidemarks visible on the first few leaves; a very good copy. With extensive manuscript annotations on many of the printer's blank leaves and marginal notes in a contemporary or 18th Century hand. Includes several owner's names (Ana Johnson, Edward [surname illegible] dated 1736, and Thomas Goodwin dated 1736, perhaps the author's son or another relation of the author), with an intriguing note in pencil on the first leaf (verso): "Pray give this Book to Mrs. Piozzi," presumably referring to Hester Lynch Thrale (later Mrs. Piozzi), the confidante of Dr. Samuel Johnson. This association is made all the more intriguing as the blank leaf following the title page is signed in ink: "H: M: Thrale, 1804," this being Hester Thrale's first born daughter Hester Maria "Queeney" Thrale, whom Johnson often addressed in his correspondence as "My sweet, dear, pretty, little Miss." ESTC no. R18455. Johnson and Queeney. Letters from Dr. Johnson to Queeney Thrale (London: Cassel & Co., 1932). .

Battista Bidelli, In Milano, 1641 - Cm. 26, pp. (16) 328.

Jena, Urban Spaltholtz, 1668 [engraved title-page: 1669]. 4to. With engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, engraved title-page and 14 engraved plates (1 folding) with views from the voyage (topography, ships, people, plants, animals). Mottled vellum (ca. 1700), with the gold-tooled crowned script initials E.F.V.D. of Ernst Friedrich van Döring (1659-1726) of Schloss Börln in Saxony.

Cat. KITLV, p.474; Cat. NHSM I, p. 174; Van Gelder, Het Oost-Indisch avontuur, p. 289; Landwehr, VOC, 309; VD17, 3:307812K. First (and only early) edition of a diary of a nine-year voyage to the East Indies, the Malabar coast in India, Persia and Ceylon, made as a soldier in a merchant ship under the command of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the years 1641 to 1650. It gives detailed information about the ships, captains and others, providing an intimate account of life onboard a VOC ship as well as the peoples in the exotic lands visited, describing food, drink (including rice wine), tobacco, flora and fauna. The illustrations include a folding view of Batavia (now Jakarta, Indonesia), views of Goa, Isle St Helena and other sites, a cinnamon tree, flying fish, numerous ships and much more. They set off on 21 January 1644 and continued from Batavia under Johan Maetsuycker to Goa, then to Ceylon and Persia and back to the Netherlands in 1650. While some information appears to have been taken from published sources, much of the information is clearly an eye-witness account. Bound for Ernst Friedrich von Döring. Somewhat browned, but otherwise in very good condition and with good margins. The outside corner of 1 leaf is torn off with no loss of text. The front hinge is cracked and there is minor damage to the spine, but the binding is also good. A fascinating account, with many personal details, of a soldier's nine-year voyage with the VOC to the East Indies, India, Persia and Ceylon.

1641 - Defense of a prominent businessman of Colonial Mexico; one of two known copies; with a rare sentence by Palafox. N.d. [1641]. N.p. [Mexico]. In 8vo. Fine 19th century red calf, boards heavily gilt, with fillets and corner pieces, raised bands to spine, tooled and lettered in gilt; spine with lower portion reconstructed. Edges stained red, a little cropped by the binder, overall fine. Exceedingly rare memorial, in defense of Don Antonio Urrutia de Vergara, against Francisco de la Torre; we have only found one other copy of this rare imprint, at the Real Academia de la Historia, Madrid. Medina did not know of it, and Palau only cites the copy held by Maggs in the 1920’s (this copy). Urritia de Vergara (1598 – 1667) was a prominent Spanish businessman in Mexico, he was involved in commerce, agriculture, and real estate; in fact, Viceroy Alburquerque portrayed Urrutia as the largest merchant of the Indies “el mayor mercader de las Indias” (Cf. His relation with the colonial administration appears to have been heterogeneous; however his relation to Viceroy Cerralvo was close and fruitful, it gained Urritia his post as Maestre de Campo, in 1632. Cerralvo’s successor, Cadereita, had Urrutia imprisoned (1637), for charges of fiscal fraud. Urrutia escaped and stayed at a Monastery. In 1639, the Consejo de las Indias ordered to stop the legal action against Urrutia and appointed Palafox to solve the issue. Palafox condemned Urrutia banning him from New Spain for two years; shortly after, he would be appointed Maestre de Campo, again. The imprint contains the sentence given by Bishop Palafox “Sentencia que dio el Señor Obispo don Juan de Palafox al Maefe de Campo don Antonio de Vergara sobre su salida de la carcel”. His business relation reached across the Pacific, with strong ties to Manila. This is clearly evidenced by the writer of this eloquent defense, Juan Grau y Monfalcon, the Procurator General for the Philippines. His involvement proves irrevocably the importance of the man held under trial. Grau y Monfalcon wrote other letters and memorials to the King of Spain, such as: “Señor. Palau, 108818 –only citing Magg’s copy, this copy. Not in Medina (Mexico). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Cases of treason

London: Pr. by the Assignes of John More, 1641. 4to (20 cm, 7.9"). [4], 35, [1] pp. First edition: His Majesty's Solicitor General (served 1606 to 1613) sets forth the law on treason, including sections on felony, abjuration and exile, and heresy. The title-page bears More's "Deus providebit" publisher's device, and the text is decorated with two headpieces and one decorative capital. The work, however, was not published until the early days of the English Civil Wars, when its reasonings were most apt. Evidence of readership: The section on "Cases of Felony" is => annotated in an early and rather challenging hand, on three pages. ESTC R16590; Gibson, Bacon, 198; Pforzheimer 25.3; Wing (rev. ed.) B272. Contemporary tan calf framed in triple blind fillets, later rebacked with brown sheep, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label; sides and spine with small scuffs, edges and extremities worn. Front pastedown with London bookseller's ticket, slightly offset onto free endpaper. Title-page darkened and stained, with two early inked notations; text generally age-toned and waterstained though not weakened. Variable worming from p. 14 on, in some cases touching letters without generally obscuring sense; upper edges of several leaves ragged and chipped, some lower edges untrimmed. => A classic.

LEICESTER'S COMMON - WEALTH. Conceived, spoken and published with most earnest protestation of dutifull goodwill and affection towards this realme. Whereunto is added Leicesters - ghost.

London, no printer named, Printed anno Dom. MDCXLI. [1641]EDITION UNKNOWN 1641, small 8vo, approximately 150 x 95 mm, 6 x 3½ inches, engraved portrait frontispiece signed: W Marshall sculpsit, pages: [8], 88, 81 - 128, 137 - 183, [1]; 34, jumps in pagination as in all copies, see ESTC R12740. LACKS THE TITLE PAGE TO LEICESTER'S GHOST, A1, bound in full brown morocco, gilt lettering and decoration to spine, gilt decoration to covers and edges of covers, all edges gilt and gauffered, marbled endpapers, binder has put the wrong date at bottom of spine. Binding slighty rubbed, title page slightly dusty, pale age - browning to margins, occasional small fox spot, otherwise a very good copy in an attractive binding. Leicester's Commonwealth (originally titled The Copie of a Leter wryten by a Master of Arts of Cambrige) (1584) is a scurrilous tract that circulated in Elizabethan England and which attacked Queen Elizabeth I's favourite, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. The work functioned as Roman Catholic propaganda against the political and religious policy of Elizabeth I's regime, in particular the Puritan sympathies fostered by Leicester. In doing so it portrayed Leicester as an amoral opportunist of "almost satanic malevolence", and circulated lurid stories of his scandalous deeds and his dangerous plots. The text is presented as "a letter written by a Master of Art of Cambridge to his friend in London, concerning some talk passed of late between two worshipful and grave men about the present state and some proceedings of the Earl of Leicester and his friends in England." The title "Leicester's Commonwealth" was first used in the 1641 edition. The book highly influenced Leicester's historical reputation in the ensuing centuries (Taken from Wikipedia).
