Written in 1529 by a philosopher at the top of his fame, the two books are a direct confrontation with Neoplatonism then current Nifo attack that frankly using the two concepts of love and beauty, it definitely ranks in the banner of desire. The book was originally dedicated to beautiful Giovanna d'Aragona (1502-1577), godson of King Ferdinand of Naples, who Nifo saw the ideal of human beauty, able to stir all human and therefore love desires, but beyond this ideal Nifo defines what is beautiful, for what we love, revolutionary design at the time of love and beauty were deified. Nunc ab Lusitano Anonymo latinitate donatum. Addita Appendice de actu possidendi & iure postliminij Serenissimi Regis Ioannis IV.

"He entered the Jesuit Order in 1610, which however he left in 1638 in order to join the Discalced Franciscans. These also he left in 1648, for the Observants. In Portugal he sided with the House of Braganza. Summoned to Rome by Alexander VII he taught theology at the College of the Propaganda, and afterwards church history at the Sapienza, and as consultor to the Inquisition. At Venice in 1667, during the week beginning 26 Sept., he held a public disputation, against all comers, on nearly every branch of human knowledge, especially the Bible, theology, patrology, history, law, literature, and poetry. He named this disputation, in his quaint and extravagant style, "Leonis Marci rugitus litterarii" (the literary roaring of the Lion of St. Mark); this obtained for him the freedom of the city of Venice and the professorship of moral philosophy at the University of Padua. He died there 1 May, 1681. Rather restless, but a man of enormous erudition, he wrote a number of books, of which over 100 appeared in print, and about thirty are still unprinted." Size: 4ºmenor [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Tulip Drawing].

Holland 18th century - Watercolour on Dutch laid paper, excellent condition, some mild browning. Dimensions: 180 by 130mm. (7 by 5 inches). From a "Tulip Book", in the manner of Anthony Claesz who produced his own "Tulip Book" in c.1641. These florilegia were commissioned to illustrate the differences between varieties of tulip bulb which at the time demanded such high prices. The beauty of these works ensured that their images would be copied for decades to come by amateur painters and gardeners alike. Claesz was a Dutch master in his own right, with several highly accomplished works to his name. However, as with most of the great Dutch masters of this period, they happily supplemented their income by illustrating such books. It also allowed them to study in detail subjects that would later be incorporated in their great flower pieces. Provenance: Private Dutch collection.

First is a list of catholic priests condemned to be hung drawn and quartered including Edmund Cannon, referred to as the Bishop of Calcedon. Then follow the names of 24 other prisoners, convicted and condemned with short physical descriptions and details of the offences. The descriptions, in fact, are unusually personal: Charles James "a handsome gentile young man"; John Davis "a lusty stout personable man"; Francis Middle-field "a pretty Youth"; William Bennet "a handsome personable young man" etc. Offences range from horse-stealing, the murder of a shoe-maker, highway robbery, coining, prostitutes conspiring to rob a client, and picking pockets. One lad "Edward Hartford, a Cookes Boy, sometime servant at the Castle in Pye-Corner" was sentenced for "Rape and buggry". Buggary and Sodomy are used synonymously to describe an unnatural sexual act between two males. Serious discussion of sexual offences is very hard to find in this early period. Accounts of trials are often the only sources to give factual evidence of sexual practices and what was considered abnormal sexual behaviour. By 25 Hen 8, c. 6, 2 and 3 Edw. 6, c.29, revived and confirmed by 5 Eliz c. 17 (1562) sodomy was a capital offence without benefit of clergy. If the victim was under fourteen years of age, it was not a felony in him, but only in the older party. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

(s.l.), (Barcelona) 1641 - Folio.(16) hojas. Plena piel, nervios, gofrados en lomo y planos. Estuche. History of Catalonia. History of Spain.

Moses and Aaron. Civil and Ecclesiastical Rites, Used by the Ancient Hebrewes; observed, and at large opened, for the clearing of many obscure Texts thorowout the whole scripture

London: Printed by E.G. and are to be sold by John Williams. 1641. Sixth edition. Ownership Signature of Hester Maria Thrale. Quarto: [8], 264 [i.e. 270], [10] pp. Lacks gathering E (pp. 25-32). With four printer's blank leaves at the front and three at the back. Text interleaved throughout with printer's blank leaves. Bound in late 19th Century full black leather decorated in gilt, black suede endpapers, with modest wear at the spine ends, tidemarks visible on the first few leaves; a very good copy. With extensive manuscript annotations on many of the printer's blank leaves and marginal notes in a contemporary or 18th Century hand. Includes several owner's names (Ana Johnson, Edward [surname illegible] dated 1736, and Thomas Goodwin dated 1736, perhaps the author's son or another relation of the author), with an intriguing note in pencil on the first leaf (verso): "Pray give this Book to Mrs. Piozzi," presumably referring to Hester Lynch Thrale (later Mrs. Piozzi), the confidante of Dr. Samuel Johnson. This association is made all the more intriguing as the blank leaf following the title page is signed in ink: "H: M: Thrale, 1804," this being Hester Thrale's first born daughter Hester Maria "Queeney" Thrale, whom Johnson often addressed in his correspondence as "My sweet, dear, pretty, little Miss." ESTC no. R18455. Johnson and Queeney. Letters from Dr. Johnson to Queeney Thrale (London: Cassel & Co., 1932). .

Battista Bidelli, In Milano, 1641 - Cm. 26, pp. (16) 328.

        Dell'antico Ginnasio Napoletano. Opera posthuma.

(Giustiniani). Il Lasena (Napoli, 1590-Roma, 1636) fu celebre giurista, erudito e filologo. Vinciana, 4476: "Interessante trattato archeologico". Graesse, IV, p. 113. Lozzi, 3036 (ristampa del 1688). Santoro, 1521. Giustiniani, p. 73.
