Author's name in pen. traces lacets.Fameux works Nifo the Italian philosopher (1473-1539) in which he celebrates the beauty of women and love, drawing on the works of ancient philosophers. Written in 1529 by a philosopher at the top of his fame, the two books are a direct confrontation with Neoplatonism then current Nifo attack that frankly using the two concepts of love and beauty, it definitely ranks in the banner of desire. The book was originally dedicated to beautiful Giovanna d'Aragona (1502-1577), godson of King Ferdinand of Naples, who Nifo saw the ideal of human beauty, able to stir all human and therefore love desires, but beyond this ideal Nifo defines what is beautiful, for what we love, revolutionary design at the time of love and beauty were deified.       apud Sebastianum Cramoisy,, Parisiis, 1641 - 3 parti (di cui la terza di appendice) in un vol. in-folio (352x225mm), pp. (24), (2), 120, 48, 34, (2), legatura coeva p. pergamena rigida con titolo manoscritto in antico su dorso a 4 nervi. Bruniture lievi. "He entered the Jesuit Order in 1610, which however he left in 1638 in order to join the Discalced Franciscans. These also he left in 1648, for the Observants. In Portugal he sided with the House of Braganza. Summoned to Rome by Alexander VII he taught theology at the College of the Propaganda, and afterwards church history at the Sapienza, and as consultor to the Inquisition. At Venice in 1667, during the week beginning 26 Sept., he held a public disputation, against all comers, on nearly every branch of human knowledge, especially the Bible, theology, patrology, history, law, literature, and poetry. He named this disputation, in his quaint and extravagant style, "Leonis Marci rugitus litterarii" (the literary roaring of the Lion of St. Mark); this obtained for him the freedom of the city of Venice and the professorship of moral philosophy at the University of Padua. He died there 1 May, 1681. Rather restless, but a man of enormous erudition, he wrote a number of books, of which over 100 appeared in print, and about thirty are still unprinted." Tulip Drawing].

Holland 18th century - Watercolour on Dutch laid paper, excellent condition, some mild browning. Dimensions: 180 by 130mm. (7 by 5 inches). From a "Tulip Book", in the manner of Anthony Claesz who produced his own "Tulip Book" in c.1641. These florilegia were commissioned to illustrate the differences between varieties of tulip bulb which at the time demanded such high prices. The beauty of these works ensured that their images would be copied for decades to come by amateur painters and gardeners alike. Claesz was a Dutch master in his own right, with several highly accomplished works to his name. However, as with most of the great Dutch masters of this period, they happily supplemented their income by illustrating such books. It also allowed them to study in detail subjects that would later be incorporated in their great flower pieces. Provenance: Private Dutch collection.

The Love of Truth and Peace. A Sermon Preached Before the Honourable House of Commons Assembled in Parliament., November. 29. 1640.

      G. M. for Andrew Crooke, London 1641 - 8vo. (vi), 46pp. Bound to style in full calf; red leather lettering piece, gilt; the boards tooled in blind. Title page remargined (no loss) else a fine copy. With the statement at the foot of the title page: "Published by order of that House." The headpiece on page one consists of repeating crowns over a Tudor rose, a fleur-de-lis, a Scottish thistle and an Irish harp. Gauden, 1605-1662, bishop of Worcester, putative author of the "Eikon Basilike." In the early days of the Civil War his sympathies were with the Parliament, and for a short time in 1643 he was a member of the Westminster Assembly. Later he changed his opinions, but was able nonetheless to retain his living throughout the Commonwealth period. At the Restoration in 1660 he was made Bishop of Exeter, and in 1662 was translated, not as he hoped, to Winchester, but to Worcester. Scarce. Wing G362; ESTC R5024.         A coppy of the prisoners judgment condemned tody [sic] from Nugate on Mundaie the 13. of Decemb: 1641. VVith the examination of the Bishop of Calcedon, and the rest of the Iesuits condemned to die: and the names of the other prisoners condemned, and the matter for which they suffer vvhereunto is added the names of those who deny the oath of supremacy. Shewed first to the officers of the prison and after to one of the iury that so the truth might be printed.

London: printed by Thomas Paine: in Gold-smiths-Alley in Red-Crosse-streete 1641 - [2], 6 p.: ill. (woodcut) ; 4to. Fine full-page woodcut showing an execution on the reverse of the title page. Upper portion of the inner margin restored, not affecting the text. First and last leaf trimmed close at the top catching the top of the letter "A" at the head of the title and with loss of page numerals on the last page. Newly rebound in quarter calf, marble boards with vellum tips. Wing C6221 LT, LG; CH, CLC, WF. None added in ESTC on-line. This is the variant in which line 15 of title has "officers or the pri-". First is a list of catholic priests condemned to be hung drawn and quartered including Edmund Cannon, referred to as the Bishop of Calcedon. Then follow the names of 24 other prisoners, convicted and condemned with short physical descriptions and details of the offences. The descriptions, in fact, are unusually personal: Charles James "a handsome gentile young man"; John Davis "a lusty stout personable man"; Francis Middle-field "a pretty Youth"; William Bennet "a handsome personable young man" etc. Offences range from horse-stealing, the murder of a shoe-maker, highway robbery, coining, prostitutes conspiring to rob a client, and picking pockets. One lad "Edward Hartford, a Cookes Boy, sometime servant at the Castle in Pye-Corner" was sentenced for "Rape and buggry". Buggary and Sodomy are used synonymously to describe an unnatural sexual act between two males. Serious discussion of sexual offences is very hard to find in this early period. Accounts of trials are often the only sources to give factual evidence of sexual practices and what was considered abnormal sexual behaviour. By 25 Hen 8, c. 6, 2 and 3 Edw. 6, c.29, revived and confirmed by 5 Eliz c. 17 (1562) sodomy was a capital offence without benefit of clergy. If the victim was under fourteen years of age, it was not a felony in him, but only in the older party. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Secrets publichs.

History of Catalonia. History of Spain.
