(2), legatura d'amatore in marocchino scuro, titolo oro al dorso, dentelles interne. Impresa dello stampatore al titolo, a p. 229 la parola di richiamo, come nell'esemplare della Bibl. David Thurston
See listing. As my family historian, I enjoy digging deep, because the past is always present! I personally descend from a long line of Thurston's back to Immigrant John Thurston (1601-1685). After extensive research I determined this David Thurston was not in our direct line, so I am parting with it. David Thurston's (1784-1811) handwritten manuscript of "Practical Arithmetic" a practice book in original binding in overall very good condition. David Thurston was a son of Abijah Thurston (1751-1812) and Rachel Johnson (1754-1826) and lived in Franklin Massachusetts. David married Miranda Ellis Pond (1786-1870) On September 5, 1809. His father Abijah as son of Deacon Daniel Thurston and Elizabeth Whitng, Abijah was a noted tavern keeper in Franklin Mass and a farmer. David died on July 25, 1811 as a very young father at the age of 27, leaving behind an infant daughter Nancy (born Jan 1811). He was laid to rest in Union Street Cemetery in Franklin. Nancy eventually married in 1832 to Stephen Metcalf and had several children. If you search "find a grave" you'll notice I always leave a "forget me not" as Bertina Thurston's granddaughter. David Thurston's mother was a daughter of Isaac Johnson (1714-1754) and Susannah Thayer (1716-1762). Interesting to note I do share the common immigrant of John Thurston (1601-1685), but my line descends from son Daniel (1646-1683 of Dedham Mass) where this David descended from another brother; Thomas. Thurston (1633-1704). Our common ancestor John Thurston came to America to Medfield Massachusetts on the ship Mary Anne in 1637. He was a carpen … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: 1601. Please read description & Review all photos. A Harmony Upon The Three Evangelistes Matthewe, Marke and Luke w/ The Commentarie of M. John Calvine: Faithfully Translated Out Of Latine Into English. by E. P. Printed in London 1610 John Calvin (July 1509 - 27 May 1564) a French theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism, aspects of which include the doctrines of predestination and of the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation of the human soul from death and eternal damnation, in which doctrines Calvin was influenced by and elaborated upon the Augustinian and other Christian traditions. Various Congregational, Reformed and Presbyterian churches, which look to Calvin as the chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the world. Calvin's authority was practically uncontested during his final years, and he enjoyed an international reputation as a reformer distinct from Martin Luther.[74] Initially, Luther and Calvin had mutual respect for each other. A doctrinal conflict had developed between Luther and Zurich reformer Huldrych Zwingli on the interpretation of the eucharist. Calvin's opinion on the issue forced Luther to place him in Zwingli's camp. Measures: 7 1/2 X 6 X 2 1/4 Thick Features: Original General Title Page w/ Beautiful Woodcut Border. SADO ISLAND GOLD & SILVER MINING: TWO SCROLLS
1601. [Japan: late 18th cent. - early 19th cent.]. A fine, brightly colored, and complete set of scrolls concerning the famous gold and silver mines on Sado Island, illustrating all the steps from mining to refining to minting. Gold, silver, and copper mining on Sado Island, just off the coast of Niigata Prefecture, had its beginnings in ancient times. With the discovery in 1601 of the rich Aikawa gold and silver mine, Sado experienced an economic boom. The Edo shogunate assembled miners and slave laborers (mostly the homeless) from throughout Japan and sent them to Sado to exploit the Aikawa and three other nearby mines. It soon became the largest gold and silver mining site in Japan, attracting a population of well over 50,000, and it, to a very large degree, financed the Edo shogunate for several hundred years. A series of unique mining, smelting, and minting technologies developed at Sado was disseminated to other mines within Japan. Today, the Sado complex of mines is on the "Tentative List" of Unesco World Heritage Sites (and much of our description is derived from the detailed article prepared for submission to Unesco). The Aikawa mine was one of the few mines at the time to be based on kodobori (mine digging). Among the pre-modern mine management systems and mining-related technologies, ranging from mining to smelting, developed at Sado were methods for extracting gold from silver, such as the Chinese haifuki cupellation method brought in from the Iwami Ginzan silver mine (Shimane Prefecture), and the yakikin method; as well as manufacturing-based op … [Click Below for Full Description]

Menghi
This 1601 exorcism book is in Good + to Very Good condition with original vellum. Top edge has the inked name of the book (see photo), there is some expected foxing and stain marks (not extensive), the initial/front title page is actually from part 2 of the book with a jointed glue seam visible. The vellum cover is slightly separating but still solid. The book is in surprisingly bright condition considering many such manuals were actually used and handled during rites."More than a treaty of exorcism is a treaty of demonology in three books: the first dedicated to the nature and power of the devil, the second to the misdeeds of witches, and the third to remedies to prevent and cure the evil. forbidden by the Sacred Congregation in 1709." Bibliotheca lamiarum n. 53. Menghi was considered the father of exorcists during the heyday of witchcraft, possession, and the common practice of exorcisms. Most of his exorcism books were published in Latin, but this work of his "can truly be characterized as a forerunner of modern studies on demonology, although it is still marked by the influences of medieval magic that colored works from a proceeding era. He is well acquainted with demoniacal literature" based on the author he quotes. (The Devil's Scourge, Paxia, p. 17; Paxia's book has extensive commentary and notes on Menghi and his works, including this work.)"Menghi, one of the most important inquisitors and theoreticians of his time, had already dwelled on the apocalyptic urgency motivating his activity both as an exorcist and as a writer of exorcisms, in the Compendio dell'arte e … [Click Below for Full Description]

The book is in surprisingly bright condition considering many such manuals were actually used and handled during rites. "More than a treaty of exorcism is a treaty of demonology in three books: the first dedicated to the nature and power of the devil, the second to the misdeeds of witches, and the third to remedies to prevent and cure the evil. forbidden by the Sacred Congregation in 1709." Bibliotheca lamiarum n. 17; Paxia's book has extensive commentary and notes on Menghi and his works, including this work.) "Menghi, one of the most important inquisitors and theoreticians of his time, had already dwelled on the apocalyptic urgency motivating his activity both as an exorcist and as a writer of exorcisms, in the Compendio dell'arte e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Prijs: Euro2.850,- (incl. lijst) ?.

In 1655 he appointed his spymaster John Thurloe (1616-1668) to be Postmaster General, a post he held until he was accused of treason and arrested in May 1660. In 1657 he fixed the rates.

Basle, Lazarus Zetzner, 1601. 4to (220 x 160 mm), pp [viii] 227 [1, blank], with large folding letterpress table 'Canon Sexagenarius' (not present in Macclesfield copy) and several tables and woodcut diagrams in text; a fine copy in contemporary vellum with overlapping edges.First edition of Christmann's first astronomical publication, dealing with spherical geometry as applied to his solar observations over several years, executed with a sextant of his own design. Jacob Christmann was a professor of oriental languages in Heidelberg, and the second teacher of Arabic in Europe. 'On the death of [Rheticus's pupil] Valentine Otho, Christmann inherited the entire library of G. J. Rheticus, which had been in Otho's keeping. This collection contained trigonometric tables more extensive than those that Rheticus had published in the Opus Palatinum of 1596 . as well as the original manuscript of Copernicus' De revolutionibus orbium coelestium. The inclusion of instruments in the bequest stimulated Christmann to begin making astronomical observations. In 1604 he proposed to Kepler that they should exchange the results of their researches. Christmann was the first to use the telescope in conjunction with such instruments as the sextant or Jacob's staff .' (DSB). (N.B. As Valentine Otho's death is given as 1603, this doesn't square with DSB's account. Christmann must have begun his observations prior to Valentine's death). The work begins with a chapter on the construction and use of astronomical instruments, principally the sextant and triangle, a discussion of solar parallax and obser … [Click Below for Full Description]

Italic, roman, and Greek type. Woodcut printer's device on the title-page. Thirty-nine engravings, including three full-page. Woodcut decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary cardboards. A very fine, wide-margined copy. The rare first and only edition of this finely illustrated book, including fine engraved maps and plates of wind roses and compasses, among other technologies and technical schemata. The work is by Fabrizio Padovani, the 'philosophus ac medicus' from Forlì; it addresses the effects of winds and contains a full-page chart of the world, the Carta Marina, which also shows the Americas in a style that recalls the famous Nova Tabula executed by Giacomo Gastaldi for the Italian edition of Ptolemy's Geography in 1548. As announced on the title-page, the last leaves concern earthquakes, as it was traditionally believed these could be caused by subterranean winds. Padovani based his illustrations primarily on historical sources – above all Pliny – as well as contemporary accounts. He "envisioned an early warning system for earthquakes, and, also, categorized phenomena that were either concurrent with or subsequent to an earthquake, similarly to the typology of things seen before, during, and after an eruption that Vesuvius writers described three decades later. Earthquakes were more frequent than eruptions, and in this respect he was not lacking in a … [Click Below for Full Description]

1601. Condition: 100% Complete, Title Page is tattered but present, see photos. First few leaves chipping at edges and somewhat delicate, but holding and quite well.
