Giovanni MAGGI (1566-1618)
"Suite di 8 incisioni all'acquaforte, 1601, firmate e datate in lastra in basso.
First edition of the French translation of one of the earliest accounts of the famous siege of Ostend, Belgium, by the Spanish army. For more than three years (1601-1604) the Spanish Royal Army laid siege to the town and finally conquered it. The siege took so long because the town could still get its supplies by sea and because the army of the States General, under command of Maurits van Nassau, tried to distract the Spanish army by besieging surrounding cities. When Ostend surrendered, the town was no more then a ruin due to all the acts of war that had taken place. The folding engraved plates show the city's fortifications, the Dutch and Spanish fleet, the different stages of the siege, and siege engines, including "Pompee's Chariot".With bookplate and the owner's inscriptions. Slightly browned, first few leaves stained, marginal thumbing throughout and some occasional (water)stains, smudges and manuscript notations. Lacking 2 of the 14 folding plates, as noted above. Otherwise a good copy.Muller, Historieplaten 1215A; Willems 99; cf. A.E.C. Simoni, The Ostend story (2003).

Teixera, Jose; Munday, Anthony
1601. London. Printed for Frances Henson. 4to. Fine 19th century mottled calf by Lloyd, with gilt arms of the Comte de Penha Longa (motto 'Superabo') to both covers, gilt fillets to spine, faux raised bands to pine, compartments tooled in gilt, two red lettering pieces, joints slightly rubbed. Title and verso of final leaf lightly soiled, lacking final blank leaf M2, overall in excellent condition.- First English edition of this rare work, containing an account of the failed invasion lead by the young king of Portugal, Dom Sebastian, to the north of Africa, his defeat and death, and the political unrest that ensued. Sebastian, the 24 year-old King of Portugal, invaded Morocco with a considerable army of 18,000 men in 1578, at the battle of Alcacer Quibir his army was crushed and he was killed by a force of nearly 60,000 lead by Marwan Abd al-Malik I Saadi, leaving no successor and paving the way for a line of pretenders, intrigues, murders and executions, resulting in the accession to the throne of the Spanish king. Given the attempts to free Portuguese soldiers after the battle -and the return of some to Portugal-, the for many years afterwards the people of Portugal refused to believe that their king was dead and awaited his return; as one could image, imposters and pretenders arose, four in particular, each in turn captured and executed. This work narrates the intent of the fourth such impostor, a Calabrian by the name of Marco Tullio. Translated by Anthony Munday from the Spanish. Ad 1: First edition of the sequel to Clusius's Rariorum plantarum historia (1601), the first part of his collected works, containing further works not included in the former and mostly devoted to exotic plants and animals. The first six "libri" of the Exoticorum (libri I-VI) form a new unpublished botanical work written by Clusius: "an important work in exotic flora [that] includes everything [he] published on the subject" (DSB). These six libri contain specimens from the New World, Southeast Asia, Africa, etc. Balis describes Clusius as the "founder of exotic zoology". These libri followed by several shorter works written, translated, edited or annotated by Clusius, including works by Da Orta, Acosta, Monardes and Belon.Clusius's work "remains of high value even to-day, on account of his genius for detecting the essential specific features of plants ... again and again, in attempting to ascertain the correct application of names given by Linnaeus, the inquirer is led back to [Clusius's] work, which can be described as the starting point of our modern knowledge for many genera. ... Moreover, his enthusiastic cultivation of foreign plants, particularly those from Turkey and the Levant, prepared the way for the splendid gardens of seventeenth century France, Germany, Austria, Flanders and Holland" (Blunt).Ad 2: First … [Click Below for Full Description]

sehr seltene Bibel - erste und einzige Auflage! Kasseler Bibel von 1601. Folioformat 34 cm hoch. Dear customer! As I am collecting bibles for ages I am interested to give clear descriptions. If you need more photos or information on the bibles don't hesitate to ask. As a private seller I can't send an invoice beyond the eBay invoices. However, there is always the chance to give back the item within 14 days if you don't like your bible. Shipping to Austria or Germany is 7 EUR, for EU countries it is 18 Euros. Please ask me for other countries. TRIXUM: Mobil-optimierte Auktionsvorlagen und Bilder-Hosting.

DE LA PRIMAUDAYE, PIERRE [TRANSLATOR: RICHARD DOLMAN]
[Printed at Eliot's Court Press] impensis Geor. Bishop, London, 1601. The third volume, published separately, of what was eventually to become a four volume work on various branches of philosophy. The third volume is dedicated mainly to natural philosophy, beginning with a discourse on celestial bodies (including stars, planets, and comets), and then moving to sublunary topics such as plants, herbs, animals, and minerals. There is quite a bit of reference to species and minerals outside of Europe - for example, the Brazil tree is praised for its excellent wood and rich colored-dye properties; the emerald, which once was very expensive, has now "much abated their price, since were found in the new-found countries of America". The best diamonds are found near the river Goa in the East Indies, but one must beware of false diamonds which are 'in the isle of Canada, which neighboureth upon Florida.' Along with the identification of numerous animals, plants, and minerals is accompanied a discussion of their many uses - medicinal, culinary and otherwise. The first edition of the first book appeared in France in 1578; English translations were to follow - in 1586 the first book (Moral Philosophy); in 1594 the second book (Human Philosophy); in 1601 the third book (Natural Philosophy); and in 1618 the fourth and final book. The identity of the "French Academie" and the authorship of this work has been much discussed, with some surmising that Francis Bacon had a hand in the work, or at least was affiliated with the Academie in some capacity (see: The French Academy, Peter Dawkins). Jan David
1601. I am honored and excited to be able to offer this incredibly rare copy of Jan David's "Veridicus Christianus" published in 1601 which includes over 100 original woodcut illustrations. This 1st edition illustrated copy was originally written in 1599 but lacked any of the outstanding prints as this copy shows. Printed over 400 years ago this book is historically important as it is one of the earliest books on Biblical doctrine and education predating even the King James Version of the Bible which was first printed in 1611. Each original woodcut illustration has a description of the scene below written in three different languages; Latin, French and German respectively making it a trilingual print apparently which rhyme when read. What makes this book so phenomenal is the sheer amount of original Renaissance prints depicting the brutal and terrifying Biblical imagery often seen during this period. Many of the fine prints depict satan, demons, skeletons, serpents, sea monsters, horned beasts, dogs, dragons and more. In addition to these terrifying Biblical characters we see many portrayals of famous characters like Adam & Eve, Christ, God the Father and angels just to name a few. The original artwork that this book contains truly are stunning beyond words can express especially when taking into account the level of detail and quality of execution. I have attempted to show you every illustration this book contains with maybe the exception of less than 10 that I was unable to combine while editing the provided collages. Giovanni MAGGI (1566-1618)
"Suite di 8 incisioni all'acquaforte, 1601, firmate e datate in lastra in basso.
Engraving, 1601, signed and dated on plate, at the end of the dedication to Ciriaco Mattei: "Francesco Villamena 1601". Later edition by Carlo Losi. Hero of Alexandria [Erone di Alessandria Heron (Alexandrinus)]
Venice: Bertolini, 1601. SECOND ITALIAN EDITION OF HERO OF ALEXANDRIA'S AUTOMATA, AN EARLY WORK ON THE ENGINEERING DETAILS OF SELF-OPERATING MACHINES (be they mechanical or pneumatic), complete with 22 illustrations. "In the pantheon of ancient experimenters and scientists, [Hero was] an unparalleled inventor and producer of the earliest automatic and robotic devices" (Ptak). The Dictionary of Scientific Biography observed that the automata Hero writes of and illustrates here "represent a marvel of ingenuity with very scant mechanical means" (DSB VI, 313). "The accounts of these automata are interesting as [they introduce] for the first time mechanisms that formed the basis of later machines. Among them are the crank, the camshaft, and systems of rotation with counter-weights" (Singer II, 634). A Greek mathematician, engineer, and experimentalist, Heron or Hero (c.10-c.70 AD) was the most influential Hellenistic scientist of his time, to date still the best representative of the extensive Roman and Hellenistic scientific tradition. He is thought to have been Greek and appears from his writings to have taught at the Museum in Alexandria, home to the famous Library of Alexandria. Complex mechanical devices are known to have existed in Hellenistic Greece, with automata of the era largely intended as prototypes for demonstrating basic scientific principles as well as toys, tools, and religious idols. Numerous designs for automata (referred to as 'thaumata' or miracles) appear in Hero's writings. Many though not all of those included in this work are theater related. Mercuriale, Girolamo
apud Iuntas [Lucantonio Giunta], Venetiis, 1601. Fourth edition, square 8vo, pp. [16], 308; 23 full-page and 1 double page woodblock text illustration; 26-page index and flyleaves lacking, slightly later marbled paper-covered boards backed brown leather, boards worn and bowed, upper hinge starting, head and tail of spine perished, edge waterstained through first quarter of the book, mostly confined to margin, good and sound. The first book on sports medicine. "Mercuriale, professor of medicine at Bologna and Pisa, is probably best known to modern students of medical history for the present work, first published in 1569. It was the first complete text on gymnastics and stresses the importance that all forms of exercise have in maintaining good health. Relying heavily on ancient practices, this work is an excellent compendium of the physical therapy of earlier times" (Heirs of Hippocrates) "The illustrations which accompanied the second edition of the work (1573) proved incredibly fertile to the Western imagination regarding the nature of athletics in the Classical world. Modern scholarship has recognized that these illustrations were largely speculative creations of Mercuriale and his collaborators." (Wikipedia) Heirs of Hippocrates 354 for the first edition. Raleigh, Walter
1601. Nuremberg. Hulsius. 8vo, (181 x 147 mm). 2 [blank], 2 ff., 17 pp., 1 ff., folding map and 6 plates, 3 [blank]. Contemporary vellum, slightly soiled, but an entirely genuine example, likely in its first binding -normally not the case. Plates show outer margin wear as often, as they were larger than the rest of the book, people often opted for cropping them, or fold them inside, some spotting but overall fine.- Second German edition, describing the voyage of Raleigh to South America in 1595, sought after for the map that illustrates it and the attractive plates. The expedition left England in 1595 towards the Orinoco River, in search of El Dorado, legendary city made of gold, hidden according to tradition in the jungle. Although obviously of unsuccessful in the finding of El Dorado, the expeditionaries explored the Orinoco. Upon his return to England, Raleigh published his account of the voyage “The discovery of the large, rich and beautiful Empire of Guiana” (1596), a German translation appeared later in 1599, Hulsius’ was the first to be illustrated. The map shows the northern part of South America and the Antilles; the plates are very creative, and of little iconographical value, except for understanding European imagination and understanding of the Americas, amongst them, a person with his head in the chest, the Amazons, etc. “In this workRaleighgives an account of his second voyage (1595) and seems to confirm the marvellous tales concerning the Spanish city of El Dorado, which he calls by the Indian name “Manoa.” Ca … [Click Below for Full Description]

David Thurston
Massachusetts: 1601. See listing. As my family historian, I enjoy digging deep, because the past is always present! I personally descend from a long line of Thurston's back to Immigrant John Thurston (1601-1685). After extensive research I determined this David Thurston was not in our direct line, so I am parting with it. David Thurston's (1784-1811) handwritten manuscript of "Practical Arithmetic" a practice book in original binding in overall very good condition. David Thurston was a son of Abijah Thurston (1751-1812) and Rachel Johnson (1754-1826) and lived in Franklin Massachusetts. David married Miranda Ellis Pond (1786-1870) On September 5, 1809. His father Abijah as son of Deacon Daniel Thurston and Elizabeth Whitng, Abijah was a noted tavern keeper in Franklin Mass and a farmer. David died on July 25, 1811 as a very young father at the age of 27, leaving behind an infant daughter Nancy (born Jan 1811). He was laid to rest in Union Street Cemetery in Franklin. Nancy eventually married in 1832 to Stephen Metcalf and had several children. If you search "find a grave" you'll notice I always leave a "forget me not" as Bertina Thurston's granddaughter. David Thurston's mother was a daughter of Isaac Johnson (1714-1754) and Susannah Thayer (1716-1762). Interesting to note I do share the common immigrant of John Thurston (1601-1685), but my line descends from son Daniel (1646-1683 of Dedham Mass) where this David descended from another brother; Thomas. Thurston (1633-1704). Our common ancestor John Thurston came to America to Medfield Massachusetts on the ship Mary Anne in … [Click Below for Full Description]
