Matthias Quad von Kinckelbach / Johannes Bussemacher
Johannes Bussemacher in Cologne/Germany., 1600. hand-coloured copper engraving, with decorative border, title at lower left. EXTREMELY RARE, from "Geographisch Handtbuch". A very attractive early map of South East Asia, stretching from Persia in the north west to New Guinea in the South-east The coastlines are recognisable but approximate. Part of the west coast of North America is shown at top right, showing lack of knowledge of the size of the Pacific ar the time. The map includes the mythical land of "Beach" from Marco Polo's reports and extends to California, where Quivira and two other cities are shown. Japan is in its "Kite" configuration.. Generally, there are many similarities with the larger Ortelius map of the same title. The Philippines is shown still without Luzon. Matthaus Quad was a German cartographer also based in Cologne, which, at the time was one of the centres for German cartography. Condition: minor repair in Paloan Island. verso: text 'India', a little show-through of text from verso as usual with this map due to thin paper. Reference: similar to Quirino, p. 80; P Meurer Atlantes Coloniensis Qua 71

Biblical commentaries on the book of Genesis by south German Reformer Wolfgang Musculus (1497-1563). Musculus was one of the foremost commentators on Scripture in the age of the Reformation. During his career he published ten biblical commentaries among which this extensive volume on Genesis. His exegetical writings were reprinted multiple times and translated in various languages during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The engraved title-page opens with a dedication to Michael van Ophoven (1570-1637), Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch, so the series must have been engraved after he became Bishop in June 1626 but probably before the Prince of Orange, Frederik Hendrik captured Den Bosch for the Dutch Republic in September 1629. HOLLANDUS, Johannes Isaac.
Opera mineralia, sive de lapide philosophico, omnia, duobus libris comprehensa.Middelburg, Richard Schilders, 1600. 8vo. With dozens of small woodcut illustrations in the text. Contemporary vellum. [16], 431, [1 blank] pp. The first edition of any work by the mysterious Johannes Isaac Hollandus, a Latin translation of a German manuscript of his treatises on mineralogy, alchemy and the philosopher's stone, and especially on the use of metal oxides to colour stones and crystals to make fake gems and precious stones. The charming little woodcuts show distilling and other equipment.Little is known about Johannes Isaac Hollandus (active 1572-1610?), but the Görlitz astronomer Bartholomeus Scultetus had a German manuscript of some of his treatises on mineralogy that survives in the form of a copy made in Prague in 1572 and Ben Jonson's 1610 play The Alchemists refers to him apparently as still living. His name suggests he was a Dutchman living abroad, but if his father was called Isaac Hollandus, as has been claimed, he may have been born abroad in a Dutch family. With the red morocco bookplate of Robert Honeyman IV. In very good condition, with only a minor transparent stain at the head of the last few leaves and a small marginal rust hole in 1 leaf. Andres Alciati 1492 - 1550
Lugduni (Lyon), Hæred. Gvlielmi Rovilii, 1600. Octavo ã8, e4, i8 A-Eee8, Eee*2 Fff8 Ggg4. The emblem book, which attained enormous popularity in continental Europe and Great Britain, while it is possible to trace it back before was certantly made most popular by Alciati. . Alciato's emblems were first published in Augsburg in Germany (two editions in 1531 and one in 1534); from 1534 onwards publishing shifted to France and remained there for the next thirty years. Wechel, who printed the Paris editions (from 1534), are like those in Augsburg. He can be said to have set the standard for clear presentation of emblems, with each emblem beginning on a fresh page, featuring the motto or title, the pictura below that, and then the subscription/epigram or verse text the main focus of publication for emblems shifted more firmly to Lyons from the mid 1540s, The 1550 Latin edition by Rouille is the first to have 211 emblems (the whole corpus, apart from the so-called obscene emblem 'Adversus naturam peccantes') illustrated. This edition includes biography of Andrea Alciati (leaves i1-i8). These emblems depict Alciati's concern for the eternal nature of man and its contradictions, the attentive ear to the popular speech, the unfolding of the personality, madness, the reflection on human existence, the relationship between man and the woman, the struggle between reason and passion, and to the satire of society and its rules and rulersThe ultimate reference for this book is Daly' Andres Alciatus Index Emblematicsus 1985; ; Landwehr, J.
Duveen, p. 300; Honeyman 1761 (this copy); Partington II, pp. 203-208 & item 1; STCN (5 copies).

Condition: Very Good. Excellent condition for 400 years of age. Oil On Alabaster c1600-1610 Item Details An exceptional and incredibly rare pair of Early 17th century Italian oil paintings on alabaster, dating to circa 1600-1610. They are both painted on alabaster and are each in their original gilt wood frames which also date to the 17th century. They are both depict religious saints. The first one is of Saint Mary Magdalene Penitent repenting for all her sins. The second painting is of Saint Anthony the great holding the Tau Cross and The Holy Bible. Both saints are placed beneath garlands for flowers surrounding them. The paintings have been completed by a very skilled artist featuring vibrant colours with very realistic features and details. The technique of painting on alabaster is a rare one; unlike other materials such as metal, canvas and wooden panel. This is because at the time, alabaster was a precious and expensive material to use. The surviving pieces are rare due to their fragile nature. Condition report: Overall, the paintings are in very good condition, the frames do show some signs of usage and ageing however, please expect this as these pieces are over 400 years old. Dimensions: Total size including frame: 22.5 x 19.5 cm Image size: 17 cm x 13 cm Weight for the pair: 1250 grams Please ask any questions that you may have. Items like this very rarely appear on the market and a very rare. When they do appear, they only feature in high class auction houses. ONGARO Antonio
Cesena: per Francesco Rauerij, 1600. 12mo (128x72 mm), modern paperboards, pp. 77, [7]. Excessively scarce edition of Tasso's Aminta, published in Cesena by Francesco Raverio, who printed very few editions. Aminta is a play written by Torquato Tasso in 1573, represented during a garden party at the court of Ferrara. Both the actors and the public were noble persons living at the Court, who could understand subtle allusions the poet made to that style of life, in contrast with the life of shepherds, represented in an idyllic way. The text is written in hendecasyllabic and septenary verses; it is divided into five acts. The play has a pastoral theme, and is set in the time of Alexander the Great. The characters are shepherds and nymphs. Francesco Raverio was a typographer active in Cesena from 1590, son of brother of Bartolomeo. In 1614 his press was inherited by Tommaso Faberi, his apprentice and son of his sister-in-law. Condition: Pin wormholes (restored) throughout the book. References: Not in Adams. Not in OCLC.
