Esemplare ben conservato. Quorum Argumenta post sequuntur

Apud Carolum Boscardum typographum iuratum, [Douai] 1602 - Nine books in five parts. [16], 469, [3]; [8], 123, [3]; [8], 96; [4], 108; [8], 174pp, [2]. Each book with a separate title-page. With an engraved portrait of the author to verso of collective title-page and an engraving of his arms to verso of A7. Contemporary sheep, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Extremities heavily rubbed, splitting to joints, lower board held (firmly) by cords only. Hinges exposed, browning to endpapers, early armorial bookplate to FEP - obscured by later book-labels of 'Guliemi O'Brien' (dated 1899) and 'Milltown Park Library', light dust-soiling and small ink-mark to title-page, short marginal tear to head of Ee6, tear to text of F5, book four, small holes to text of F2-3, book five - without loss of sense in either instance. A reprinting of the first nine books of antiquary Richard White's (1539-1611) learned and consummate effort to substantiate the British history of Geoffrey of Monmouth. Though an ultimately misguided venture, White demonstrates an impressive critical eye and, despite concluding that Monmouth is a reliable source, does assemble a impressive gathering of obscure philological and antiquarian evidence to justify his arguments. The first five books were initially printed as a single volume in 1597 at Arras, with books six through nine being issued as separate parts soon thereafter. Two final books appeared in 1606 and 1607 respectively. Size: 8vo [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Konvolut von Büchern des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts - 140 Bände].

Konvolut von 140 Büchern aus dem 17. und 18. Jahrhundert. - Autoren sind u.a.

19. Jahrhundert). Insgesamt sehr schönes Exemplar. Erste Ausgabe. Sinkankas, 184: „A rare work, this first edition being far rarer than its successors, and a pity because it is much more attractively designed and printed. A notable feature is the very abundant marginalia in very small type which in numerous instances entirely fill available margin space. While this work principally treats mineral gemstones it includes a bewildering variety of other substances, as can be divined (sic!) from the title, because at the time they were almost as rare and costly as the usual gemstones. It opens with a treatise on Biblical gemstones with a unique doublepage summary (...) Next are chapters devoted to the gemstones themselves, beginning with the giacinto (possibly zircon or garnet), citing the statements and opinions of ancient writers regarding physical properties, medicinal and magical virtues, and giving sources of information. (...) The following are treated: topaz, ruby & carbuncle, diamond, sapphire, turqoise, emerald, sardonyx, morion, sard, carnelian, onyx, beryl, chrysolite, amethyst, jasper, nephrite, plasma, and others, including some that cannot now be identified. Also treated are bezoars, both mineralic (ie, concretions) and animal, coconut from the Maldive Islands, cachalong, fish bones, serpentine, fossils of various species, animal teeth, horns, tusks, skin and blood of the rhinoceros, pearls, balsams, and closing the text, two electuary medicines using hyacinth (zircon?), and finally a note on the hyacinth."

The Bible. Translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke, and conferred with the best translations in diuers languages.

Robert Barker, London 1602 - Geneva version of the Bible, translated by William Whittingham, Anthony Gilby, Thomas Sampson. Quarto, bound in contemporary calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label. The title-page is trimmed with edge wear affecting some of the border, a few repairs; the New Testament title and likely some other leaves, several leaves with wear, a good copy. Upon Queen Mary's accession in 1553, "publication of the English Bible ceased in England. Many Protestants who fled to the Continent were attracted to Calvin's Geneva. Among these exiles were eminent English Bible scholars who began work on a new translation" (The Bible: 100 Landmarks 62). First published in 1560, the Geneva Bible--often called the "Breeches Bible" for its unique rendering of Genesis 3:7--was "more scholarly than any previous translation. [It] achieved immediate popularity and exerted an extremely powerful influence. The Geneva Version included prefaces, maps and tables; and for the first time in an English Bible the verses were divided and numbered. It has been more properly called the Elizabethan family Bible, since it was this version which was the first to enter the English home" (PMM 83). "It became the textus receptus for the Puritan element in England. It was read by Shakespeare, Bunyan and the soldiers of the Civil War, and is thus of cardinal importance for its influence on the English language, literature and thought" (Great Books and Book Collectors, 105-8).          Bibliotheca Scriptorum Societatis Jesu, opus inchoatum a R.P. Pedro Ribadeneira

Eiusdem Societatis Theologo, anno salutis 1602. Continuatum a R.P. Philippo Alegambe Ex eadem Societate, usque ad annum 1642. Recognitum, et productum ad annum Iubilæi M.DC.LXXV. [1675]. A Nathanaele Sotuello Eiusdem Societatis Presbytero. Romæ : Ex typographia Iacobi Antonij de Lazzaris Varesij, MDCLXXVI [1676]. Folio, contemporary vellum over boards; front pastedown with the ex libris of H.P. Kraus; pp xxxvi, 974 [of 982, lacking the last 4 leaves of the index]; title page with engraved printer's device incorporating Jesuit trigram; decorative initials; text in double columns; title page relaid, with loss at upper outer corner and early ownership inscription scratched out; marginal repairs to last few leaves. Pedro Ribadeneira (b. Toledo, 1527; d. Madrid, 1611) may be regarded as one of the fathers of modern bibliography. His Illustrium Scriptorum Religionis Societatis Iesu Cataloguswas first published in Antwerp in 1602. The work records Jesuit figures alphabetically, each entry including a brief biography followed by a list of writings in chronological order. The bibliography went through numerous augmented editions during the seventeenth century. The 1676 Rome edition incorporated the revisions and additions of Philippus Alegambe and Nathaniel Southwell. These editors accorded Ribadeneira himself a prominent entry, the first page of which is printed in large, bold capitals.

A Swedish guide to home remedies for all imaginable illnesses, injuries and complaints, with very brief sections on various body parts and organs, and on various ailments. There is a brief note on tobacco (pp. 230-231). Lindh was surgeon to Per Brahe the younger (1602-1680), Count of Visingsö, made use of the Count's library for the "best authorities," and honours him with a six-page dedication. The Count was also patron to Johannes Kankel, who established the first printing office in Visingsborg ca. 1667, for he calls it the Count's printing office in the imprint of the present book. The inking is inconsistent. With extensive annotations in the margins and endleaves, at least one arly owner's name, and a later armorial bookplate. Somewhat browned and with some marginal stains. Binding rubbed and dirty. A good copy of a very rare guide to household pharmacology and medicine, especially interesting as a thoroughly local production (author, patron, library and printer).

A Discourse upon the Meanes of wel governing and maintaining in good Peace, a Kingdome, or other Principalitie.

London: printed by Adam Islip,, 1602. Divided into three parts, namely, The Counsell, the Religion, and the Policie, which a Prince ought to hold and follow. Against Nicholas Machiavell the Florentine. Translated into English by Simon Patericke. Folio (269 x 182 mm). Contemporary calf, neatly rebacked to style, red morocco label to spine, raised bands and boards ruled in gilt, centrepieces stamped in blind to boards, edges speckled green, later endpapers. Bound without initial and final blanks, with two final leaves bearing "A table of the Maximes". Early inscription to title page. Extremities lightly rubbed, a few chips and marks to boards, hinges gently cracked but very firm, some infrequent dampstaining to upper margins and a small tear to lower margin of leaf G5, otherwise a very good copy. First edition in English of the work popularly known as Antimachiavel, a translation of Discours sur les moyens de bien gouverner et maintenir en bonne paix un royaume ou autre principauté (1576). Despite being widely discussed in Elizabethan and Jacobean England, Machiavelli's Il principe was not published in a complete English translation until 1640, a remarkable delay partly explained by the existence of Patericke's translation which cited enough of Machiavelli's original to serve as a substitute for it.
