[VOC].
47, [1 blank]; 11, [1 blank] pp.Ad 1: Compilation of all charters of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), starting with the original charter of 1602 followed by all prolongations up until 1743, which prolonged the charter until 31 December 1754. The first charter was granted on 20 March, 1602 for 20 years, and was followed by 12 extensions, the last one expiring on 31 December 1800. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) came into existence by merging various small trading companies into what was to become the world's largest trading company, building a trade empire with an extensive network of trade posts. The 1602-charter granted the VOC a monopoly on trade, warfare, minting, building fortresses, appointing officials, etc., for the entire area between Cape of Good Hope to the Strait of Magellan.Ad 2: Very rare edition of the prolongation of the charter dated 17 December 1742 and valid for 12 years.Very good copies.l Ad 1: Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 19 (3 copies of which 1 variant); STCN (7 copies); ad 2: cf. Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 17-18 (folio size copies printed on one side); not in STCN.

FALCONIA PROBA, Valeria, Francesco POLA, Bernardus BRUSCHUS (all after VIRGILIUS & OVIDIUS) and Carolus SCRIBANIUS.
82 of 98, [2] pp.Rare first edition of a collection of five works of verse (one not known before the present edition, and three more not long before) in a remarkable contemporary binding with a monogram HD surrounded by four gothic S's, the S's featuring a diagonal line from the upper right to the lower left terminal: an addition to the "S fermé" bindings known to the bookbinding historian Geoffrey Hobson, who records 2 others with an HD monogram, in 1602 and ca. 1600. Hobson's 35-page article devoted to bindings of this sort leaves many questions unanswered, but they are probably all French and he calls them "tout intéressants et précieux". Hobson also notes that this style of S can appear in watermarks and ironically (for it is almost certainly coincidence) the paper of the present edition is watermarked with a crowned double-headed eagle with a similar S on its heart-shaped breast. The first four works are "centos": patchwork texts constructed by selecting and rearranging lines or phrases from a classical work (in this case Virgil and Ovid) to produce a different narrative (in this case Christian religious works), while the last work is wholly original and concerns the opposition between worldly and divine love. The edition as a whole has several Jesuit and Counter-Reformation associations. Although Raphael Sadeler engraved illustrations for the present edition and an emblematic device for the colophon, all appear on integral leaves with the verso blank, and they have all been carefully removed from the present copy. This has no effect on the text, however, which remains … [Click Below for Full Description]

KIRCHER, Athanasius.
[32], 618, [28] pp.The third, last, best and only folio edition, much enlarged, thoroughly revised and with the engraved and many other illustrations newly made for it, of one of the major scientific works of the famous German Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), a truly encyclopedic work on magnetism. Kircher published his first major work, Ars Magnetica, in 1631. Only 63 pages in length, it extensively reports on his invention of a method for measuring magnetic power by means of a balance. The present work on magnetism was for Kircher an omnibus of scientific and also phantastic theories. He researched and measured magnetism in numerous situations and applied it to numerous fields of study, including cosmology, astronomy, geography, optics, electricity, medicine, metallurgy, animals, music, love, etc. He was the first to propose using magnetic declination to determine longitude. With the armorial bookplate of Hyacinth Theodore Baron (1706/07-1787), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Paris, and library stamps of Dr. Timoteo Riboli (1809-1895). Somewhat browned and with a small defect in the engraved title-page, but still in good condition, binding slightly stained.l De Backer & Sommervogel IV, cols. 1048-1049; Caillet 5780; DSB VII, pp. 374-378; Fletcher, Athanasius Kircher (2011), p. 565 (no. 5b) & passim; Poggendorff I, pp. 1258-1259; Wheeler Gift 116a.

KIRCHER, Athanasius.
[18], 482, [10] pp. (including 2 integral frontispieces), plus 4 inserted tables & 2 plates.First edition of a seventeenth-century attempt to organise all knowledge of the universe into a classified system with nine primary categories (represented by icons made for the present edition) and to discover an underlying universal language, the most ambitious work (and one of the most extensive) of the great eccentric Jesuit genius Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680): a bizarre mixture of philosophy, science, religion and fantasy. On 29 July 1661 Kircher contracted to have the Amsterdam bookseller Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge (1616/17-1681) publish his books including new editions of some previously published works as well as works he had not yet written. Kircher also had Van Waesberghe arrange for some copies of the books to be luxuriously bound for presentation to various luminaries. No expense was spared to produce the present binding and it bears the owner's inscription of Giovanni Paolo Oliva (1600-1681), Superior General of the Jesuit Society, who granted the privileges for both volumes. He is an obvious candidate for a presentation copy. Moreover, the binding is nearly identical, using the same tools in a nearly identical arrangement, as that of the Morgan Library's copy of the same edition. So a single binder made at least two virtually identical and extremely luxurious bindings for the same edition, strongly supporting the notion that they were made for Kircher's presentation copies. In a 1948 Sotheby's catalogue, Anthony Hobson attributes the binding of the copy now at t … [Click Below for Full Description]

1602. Guter Zustand.

With Vecchi's on the title-page, a woodcut oval portrait of Boccaccio and 110 woodcut illustrations (mostly about 6.5 x 10 cm). Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment. [20], "400" [= 488] pp. One of the most important and influential redactions of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, the greatest and most popular work of Italian literature. Boccaccio (1313-1375) began writing the Decameron soon after the plague that decimated Florence in 1348 and finished it in 1353. It was immediately recognized as a great work, and has remained a classic ever since. It is a classic example of stories within a frame story, the frame story revolving around the plague in Florence. Ten young noble Florentines (seven women and three men) decide to leave the city to avoid the plague, settling in a villa in the countryside nearby. They entertain each other for ten days by each telling a story each day, making a hundred stories in all. Although Boccaccio has the young man Dioneo tell more naughty stories than the other characters, he also has the women tell some, especially on day seven, when Dioneo sets the theme as stories of women playing tricks on their husbands. Modern scholars often accuse Salviati of butchering Boccaccio's text but in fact he showed the greatest respect for it. The Church was more concerned with its own reputation than with eroticism per se, so in many c … [Click Below for Full Description]

MERCATOR, Rumold.
Orbis terrae compediosa descriptio.Duisberg, [heirs of Rumold Mercator], "1587" [= 1602 (engraved 1587)]. Engraved map of the world (36.5 x 53.5 cm) in 2 hemispheres in an equatorial stereographic projection at a scale of about 1:80,000,000 (plate size 28.5 x 52.5 cm), with the title in a panel across the head, a lattice of strapwork decoration in the corners around the hemispheres, an armillary sphere (above) and an elaborate compass rose (below) in the lattice between the hemispheres, and a ship and sea monsters in the sea. Further with an extensive letterpress text in Latin in the large foot margin, in 4 columns. Coloured by an early hand. Framed in a passe-partout under glass (67.5 x 80 cm). Beautiful large map of the world prepared by Rumold Mercator (1541-1599), who took the cartographic information from his father Gerard Mercator's great world map of 1569, but converted it from the Mercator projection, most popular for navigation, to the equatorial stereographic projection, which shows the world in two hemispheres. It first appeared in 1587, seven years before Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) died, so he probably advised his son and approved the result. The present example comes from the 1602 edition of Mercator's great atlas, published the year the VOC (Dutch East India Company) was established, and is coloured by an early hand. Mercator's 1569 map, in 21 sheets, saw a limited distribution and survives in only 3 copies, so the present map served as the standard world map and cartographers throughout Europe copied it or used its cartographic information. Valori was added for the first time in the present second edition. Razzi's selection is interesting for including people whose power proved short-lived or who worked largely behind the scenes: all five changed the course of Florence's history with important long-term consequences, but only Cosimo de' Medici is a household name.Farinata (or Manente) degli Uberti (1212-1264) ruled Florence from 1239 to 1250, when the Guelphs exiled him, but he recaptured Florence in 1560. Tempesta, Antonio
Roma, 1602. ?Giorgio Vasari     (Precio : lote) Formato (cm): 18x14

SAUMUR: THOMAS PORTAU, 1602 IN QUARTO 12, 702 P, GUT VOLLSTÄNDIG. SAUMUR: THOMAS PORTAU, 1602 IN- QUARTO 12, 702 P, WELL COMPLETE. Rare impression of Thomas Portau in Saumur DIMENSIONS: 24 CM X 16 CM Mornay, Philippe de In a public dispute held at Fontainebleau in May 1600, Philippe de Mornay responds to Jacques de Perron's criticisms of his text On the institution, use and doctrine of the holy sacrament of the Eucharist in the old church, published in 1598. He suffered humiliation and defeat, in large part because his unwavering commitment to the Protestant cause had lost Henry IV's support to this point. This work was written in response to the Proceedings of the conference held by the Perron of the Bishop of Evreux and the Sieur du Plessis. De Mornay founded the Huguenot Academy of Saumur in 1593. Portau Thomas, Protestant printer, started in Pons, then in Niort before settling in Saumur between 1590 and 1623. He is believed to be the son of Jean Portau, a printer in La Rochelle. The typography is different from that of his Father but resembles that of the Haultins. He left for Saumur at the request of Philippe Duplessis-Mornay, Governor of this City. The same year, the Academy was created, which attracted many intellectuals to the City.He was Saumur's first printer until his death in 1623. (MEDICINE - KING'S EVIL). CLOWES, WILLIAM
London: Edward Allde, 1602. FIRST EDITION. 181 x 123 mm. (7 1/8 x 4 3/4"). 4 p.l., 68 pp., [2] leaves (last blank). FIRST EDITION. Early 20th century quarter calf over marbled paper boards, raised bands, red morocco label.Front pastedown with North Library shelf label of the Earls of Macclesfield; final blank with a series of Latin and French epigrams in a contemporary hand, and the name "Thomas." Wellcome I, 1508; STC 5446; ESTC S105025. Paper boards lightly soiled and chafed, first and last leaves a little browned and soiled, occasional printer's smudges or small marginal stains, but an excellent copy, generally clean and fresh, in a binding with few signs of wear. The last, and the rarest, work by an outstanding Elizabethan surgeon, this short treatise discusses possible cures for the disease now known as scrofula (a tubercular infection of the neck's lymph nodes). A distinguished naval surgeon and author of two earlier influential works (on syphilis and gunshot wounds), Clowes (1543/4-1604) begins here by offering three "Intentions Phisicall," or internal remedies: adjustments to diet, pills for purging, or powders and syrups. He moves on to six "Intentions Chyrurgicall," or direct treatment of the neck swellings, beginning with plasters to be applied, and moving on to lancing or outright extraction of the tumors. Finally, he offers "a most miraculous Cure"--the touch of Queen Elizabeth--and recounts the tale of a Dutchman who was cured after Her Majesty laid hands on his lesions. Unusually for his time, and for a man who was able to write in Latin, Clowes chose to comp … [Click Below for Full Description]
