LEU, Thomas de.
Paris, 1602.Etching and copper engraving, mounted on a larger piece of contemporary paper, text panels contemporarily separated from print and mounted on verso. Ca. 43 x 56 cm. Framed.Bird’s eye view of a battle fought in Hungary between forces loyal to the Habsburgs under the Duke of Mercœur and the Ottomans. » This commemorates the victorie of Philippe Emmanuel, the Duke of Mercœur, in a battle against the Turks, fought in Hungary in 1601. Published in Paris, likely shortly after Mercœur’s death in 1602. It was created by Thomas de Leu (1560-1612), a Flemish engraver who lived in Paris. Philippe Emmanuel de Lorraine, Duke of Mercœur was born in 1558 in Nomeny France. In 1589-90, he led the Catholic League in Brittany, in opposition to the ascension of the Protestant Henri IV to the French throne. After the league was defeated, Mercœur was persona not grata in France. Meanwhile, the Habsburg Empire was in the midst of the ‘Long War’ against the Ottomans. The Austrians felt a need to shore up their position in Lower Hungary. Rudolf’s brother, Archduke Matthias, was charged with leading the campaign. Mercœur was eager to redeem himself, fighting for a new cause. In 1597, he travelled to Hungary at the head of an army of 3,000 men composed of French recruits. He distinguished himself as one of the leading Habsburg commanders of the war and won important battles at Nagykanizsa and Györ. He besieged Nagykanizsa at … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oliviero GATTI (Piacenza 1579 circa - Bologna verso il 1650)
Bulino, 1602, datato e firmato in lastra in basso a destra "Olivier Gatti f". Engraving, 1602, dated and signed in right lower margin '1602 Olivier Gatti f". Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, thin margins, just faded in the lower right corner with the date and the signature, occasional foxing, otherwise in good condition. The scene shows St. Jerome clasping a crucifix, half-length with a skull. Bartsch records a tradition that the design was given to Gatti by Agostino Carracci. Bartsch XI … [Click Below for Full Description]

1602. Rome: Hendrik van Schoel, c.1607. 340 x 455mm, with wide margins. Original publication lines erased. A recording of the bizarre carnival games held on the Mount Testaccio in Rome, probably the exceptional one of 1545. In a central arena knights are slaughtering bulls, while carts are rolled down the hill to the right to add to the confusion. In each cart is a pig, which were prizes for the first man to catch them. The plate was cut by an engraver known only by his initials, I.T.F. (active in Rome c. 1550), and first published by Vincenzo Luchino in 1558. In 1602 it was republished by Giovanni Orlandi with his imprint lower right. This example, published only a few years later, has both earlier imprints erased. Giovanni Battista de' CAVALIERI o CAVALLERIS (1525-1601)
1602. Bulino, firmato in lastra in basso a sinistra. Engraving, signed at lower left. After Luca Penni. Example of the third state, with the address o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Pierio Valeriano; [Pierio Valeriano]; Celio Agostino Curione
1602. ont> Gio Battista Combi : Venetia Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. An uncommon Italian language edition of this famed early study on Egyptian hieroglyphs. This study looks at hieroglyphics and their use in allegory. With the signatures: A-G4, H2, A-Z8, Aa-Zz8, Aaa-Ccc8, Ddd6. An early edition of this work, and an unusual imprint. Most early editions of this work on the market are in Latin, whereas this work is in Italian. This is not the first Italian translation, which appeared in 1602, however surviving Italian language translations from this period appear to be of a higher scarcity. Valeriano took inspiration from the culturally important and contemporaneous rediscovery of Horapollo's Hieroglyphics. His tutor, Giorgio Valla produced writings on Horapollo and some consider this work to be a sort of continuation. This work formed the most concise Renaissance dictionary of symbols, which was an area of study that was gathering much interest during that period. Each entry to this work is dedicated to noted Renaissance figures who assisted or inspired Valeriano in his writings. Valeriano mostly discusses natural history through the emblem images with information he procured from Medieval bestiaries and the 'Physiologus'. This work became a useful source for many emblem publications in addition to art and general literature works. Adorned with hundreds of beautiful woodcuts throughout, which each have a textual entry explaining the 'hieroglyph'. Collation unavailable for this uncommon edition, appears complete according to signatures, pagination and catch-word … [Click Below for Full Description]

New Testament Bible
Heidelberg: Commeliniana. Marcus, 1602. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Benito Arias Montano was a 16th-century Spanish scholar who is best known for his polyglot edition of the New Testament. Also known as the Plantin Polyglot, this Bible first appeared in 1572 under the direction of Pope Gregory XIII. His commentary and translation are considered very important even today, mostly because he was accused by the Spanish Inquisition of altering the scriptural text from the original Hebrew. To further prove his innocence, this 1602 polyglot edition is printed with Greek and Latin in 'word-for-word' translations on top of each other.

London: 1602. See photos and description for general condition of this book. Up for your consideration is the first English translation of The Works of Josephus Flavius by Thomas Lodge, published in London in 1602. I am selling this book for a gentleman whose parents owned the book. Based on a written receipt, the book was purchased in October of 1986. Based on another note, the book was also rebound. The book is in nice condition for a 400 year old book but there is some damage to the lower corners of the last several pages of the book plus there is some staining to the upper third of the last 200+ pages. There is also writing in pencil on the first inside page. And it looks like someone added their touch to the title page in the 1800s and there maybe occasional notes inside. Please see photos for general condition. Please contact me if you have any questions. Book will be mailed via UPS with signature required upon delivery.

Anastasii, S.R.E. Bibliothecarii; [Anastasius Bibliothecarius; Johannes Busaeus, ed.]
Ioannis Albini [Iohannem Albinum], 1602. [xxxvi], 352, [14] pp.; small 4to, early brown calf, six raised bands, gilt decoration in compartments. Title page printed in red and black, with the large engraved device of the Jesuits ("IHS") and the motto "LAUDABILE NOMEN DOMINI" from Psalm 113:3 ("the name of the Lord is to be praised"); printer's device on colophon. The first printed edition of this compilation of biographies on the lives of the popes, beginning with Saint Peter. Manuscript versions, known as the Liber Pontificalis, were first produced in the fifth or sixth century and some have been attributed to the papal librarian Anastasius bibliothecarius (though there are differing views that ascribe parts of the work to, i.a., Saint Jerome, and from there the author attribution trail gets rather complicated). This edition rare, with only one copy recorded in WorldCat (at the BSB in Munich). A good copy, with some early notations on front flyleaf and title page (with a few small remnants of paper tape covering ink notations); pages partially browned but in otherwise clean, very good condition; covers worn; front board detached; loss of about an inch at the top of backstrip. Robert Barker, Printer to the Queenes most excellent Majesty, London, 1602. Early 17th century versions of the English Book of Common Prayer and The Old and New Testaments printed by Robert Barker. Octavo, elaborate gilt tooling to the front and rear panels, raised bands, marbled endpapers, hand tooling to the page edges. Title page of the Booke of Common Prayer printed with elaborate red and black woodcut frames. Title pages of the Old and New Testament printed with elaborate black and white woodcut frames with portraits of the holy saints. In very good condition with some professional restoration to a few pages. An exceptional example. Most notably the printer of the King James Bible, one of the most influential books ever printed in the English language, Robert Barker was a printer to James I of England and the son of Christopher Barker, printer to Queen Elizabeth I. Barker inherited his father's printing house in London in 1599 upon his father's death and printed mostly works of an official nature including books of prayer and scripture. In 1631, Barker collaborated with fellow royal printer Martin Lucas on a word-for-word reprint of the King James Bible which would later become known as The Wicked Bible due to the accidental omittance of the word "not" in the sentence: "Thou shalt not commit adultery." The majority of copies of the Wicked Bible were immediately cancelled and burned; Barker was fined the equivalence of over 33,000 pounds and was deprived of his printer's license. THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF BRAHE S MOST IMPORTANT WORK AND THE FOUNDATION ON WHICH KEPLER, AND LATER NEWTON, BUILT THEIR ASTRONOMICAL SYSTEMS (Sparrow). The bulk was printed at Brahe s observatory on the island of Hven but left unfinished; it was completed by Kepler in Prague. This work, a consequence of the new star of 1572, established the observational and theoretical techniques which initiated the era of modern scientific astronomy. The number and accuracy of Brahe s observations provided the evidence for verifying the heliocentric theory and for Kepler s deduction of his three laws of planetary motion. The star of 1572 and the comets observed at Hven had cleared the way for the restoration of astronomy by helping to destroy old prejudices; and Tycho therefore resolved to write a great work on these recent phenomena which should embody all results of his observations in any way bearing on them. The first volume he devoted to the new star, but as corrected star p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cardinal Mazarini ». Jean-Jacques Barillon (1601-1645) était un magistrat françai … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAZARIN Jules (1602-1660).
