1599 - Tabula Asiae XII (Sri Lanka / Ceylon / India / Tabrobana) Issued Venice, [1582] 1599 by Giovanni Lorenzo D'Anania / Ruscelli & Rosaccio. Printed by heirs of Melchoir Sessa. Fourth Edition, second issue using the re-engraved 1582 plate in 1598-99. Italian text on verso. This scarce late issue used the 1561 plate (a close examination of minute details reveals this), but the plate was not used again after this 1599 printing and this this map has no further appearances or printings. With an interesting engraving of an elephant on the left margin, explanatory text below, and a sea monster and sailing ship to the south of the island. A survey of the Map Price Record reveals that Ruscelli maps from the 1598-99 printing are offered much less frequently than earlier printings (1561, 1562 & 1574), at a ratio of approximately 1 later printing for every 5 offered from earlier editions. This would appear to indicate the later edition may have been printed in smaller numbers and, due to increasing market competition, had a smaller distribution. In near VG or better condition, minor light surface age wear and toning as typical, some faint minor offsetting scarcely worthy of mention, overall the image is clean, well preserved and very attractive. Original fold line as issued. Sheet measures c. 13" x 9 1/4"Engraved area measures c. 9 3/8" x 7 1/4"Folio. [R12077]Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, v. 4., p. 87.

Siena, Toscana - Malavolti, Orlando:
Venezia, per Salvestro Marchetti libraro in Siena, 1599. 4°, circa 22,5 x 17,5 cm., 12, 68 num. ff.; 14, 198 num. ff.; 14, 166 num. ff., with 4 large portraits, 4 printer s devices, some initials and woodcut ornaments. Half-vellum around 1900 wih red label to spine Adams M 281; Edit 16, CNCE 28600; BMC, Italian 406. First edition of all three extant books of this large history of Siena written by the patrician and town representative Orlando Malavolti (1515-1596) who died before he could finish his work. The first book had come out separately in 1574. The present copy does have the first 4 leaves with an extra title and a dedication that seem to lack in many other copies (here there are altogether 4+8=12 leaves instead of only 8). Malavolti prepared also a map of the town and its surroundings that does though circulate independtly from the book. All three parts and the first four leaves with the dedication have a woodcut portrait of Malavolti in a nice border. - All three titels with a small old armorial stamp, last endpaper with two older stamps of a freemason s lodge and a crowned eagle, only little browning or spotting, mostly crisp, just slightly rubbed, else fine. Borromini, Francesco - Paolo Portoghesi
4, 447 S., zahlr., oft ganzseit. Abb., Pläne, Kart. m. OU, OU min. randknittrig, tadellos. Dt. Erstausgabe.

(6), (110), 190, 127, 121, (11) ff; (10), 91 [misnumbered 93] pp, bound without the general engraved title and wanting 10 pages of prayers at the rear. 18th century panelled calf, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered red label, early 19th inscriptions to the blank verso of the final leaf of the Old Testament, occasional older marginalia elsewhere. Joints neatly repaired and the endpapers replaced, most likely in the 20th century, two adjacent leaves of Psalmes at the front with loss to the text, one leaf (Ee5) with loss of text to the lower corner, another (Fff5) with loss of text to the upper and lower edges plus roughly a dozen leaves at intervals with smaller losses occasionally with slight loss of text. Herbert, 253. An edition of the Bible that was republished repeatedly in the early decades of the 17th century, with subtle differences to each issue but without amendment to the imprint or date. This copy is bound with 110 pages of a contemporary Book of Common Prayer including the Psalms, textually complete but for title page making it impossible to identify the edition. The separate edition of the Psalmes bound in at the rear bears no imprint on its title page, but otherwise conforms to other 1630s editions of the work that we have seen.

Pietro BERTELLI
Padova, 1599. Vargas Machuca, Bernardo
First edition; excessively rare Americana. The Milicia is by all accounts a primary source book for the history of the colonization and pacification of South American Indians in the 16th century. It is the earliest guerrilla manual and amongst the first works on the military organization in South America, aimed to conquer and pacify the tribes opposing the Spanish settlements in the New World. Vargas Machuca´s efforts in Spanish America were focused in New Granada (Colombia), Peru and Chile; in Chile he presented a project to pacify the rebellious Araucanians, and resisted the Council for the Indies in their intention of de-populating the region. Vargas Machuca (1557 - 1622) was a Spanish military and colonial officer; he spent over two decades in South America, which allowed him the working knowledge necessary for the confection of his treatise. The work is a comprehensive manual of how to conduct warfare in the New World, with notes on the medicines and prevention of diseases for the military, a description of the "Indias Occidentales" dealing with the geography and hydrographical reality of the region, fauna and flora. Unfortunately, history would judge and criticize Vargas Machuca for his ruthless position towards the natives. "The first manual of guerrilla warfare ever published... he advocated for the Americas the creation of commando groups to carry out search and destroy missions deep within enemy territory for up to two years at a time" (Parker). The illustration comprises an armillary sphere on verso of ff. 180, and a portrait of Vargas Machuca holding a com … [Click Below for Full Description]
