[MANUSCRIPT - ORDINANCE]. OLDENBARNEVELT, Johan van.
[Ordinance forbidding the planting of trees around windmills in the Land van Arkel (in the southwestern corner of the province of Holland) and requiring the removal of existing trees].The Hague, 14 December 1598. Manuscript document in Dutch in brown ink on the skin side of a single piece of sheepskin parchment (36 x 48 cm, folded to 14 x 19 cm). Original official ordinance by the knighthood, noblemen and cities of the province of Holland representing the States of Holland (signed by the great statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt), giving a detailed picture of the careful balance that had to be struck between individual rights and general good in maintaining the reclaimed Dutch polder lands in the 16th century, in this case concerning water control in the Land van Arkel, a region around the towns of Arkel and Gorinchem and some villages and polder lands to their north and east. The officials had already taken all measures they could independently, improving the existing windmills and building new ones to pump the rising water up into the rivers, but the windmills were unable to perform optimally because willows, orchards and other planted trees on private properties around the windmills were interfering with the wind. The request was granted by the present ordinance. It gave them the authority to forbid further planting within 50 roeden (about 200 metres) of a windmill and to demand the removal of trees already planted within that distance.Although the document itself explicitly refers to the attached seal, no trace of it survives except for the slit cut through the two layer … [Click Below for Full Description]

ACOSTA, José de.
Historie naturael ende morael van de Westersche Indien.Enkhuizen, Jacob Lenaertsz. Meyn (colophon: Haarlem, printed by Gillis Rooman), 1598. 8vo. With a woodcut decoration on the title-page. Vellum (ca. 1700?). [7], 398, [8] ll. First Dutch edition of "the most convincing, detailed and reliable account of the riches and new things of America" (Streeter), written by the Spanish Jesuit José de Acosta (1539/40-1600) and translated by Jan Huyghen van Linschoten from the original Spanish. The "West Indies" of the title still referred at this date to the New World as a whole, and the book concentrates on the Spanish possessions in Peru and Mexico, covering the Inca and Aztec people, customs, history, botany, zoology, mineral riches, trade, products, and much more. It was this book above all others that opened the eyes of the Dutch, the English and the rest of Europe to the extraordinary wealth Spain was reaping from its possessions in the New World, and it includes practical information such as sailing instructions, accounts of diseases, etc. With a 1645 owner's inscription, library stamps and the armorial bookplate of the Marchese of Bernezzo on the back of the title-page. With some repairs in the first two quires, the title-page rather worn and two leaves somewhat browned, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is scuffed and has cracks in the vellum at the front hinge, but is still good and structurally sound. The most influential early work on America, in its first Dutch edition.

Venice, Roberto Meietti, 1598. 4to (22 x 16.5 cm). With engraved title-page, folding woodcut plate, 3 woodcut volvelles with moving parts, and numerous woodcut illustrations in text. Including a world map in two hemispheres (incl. America and a scattering of islands at the location of Australia) on two facing pages, they reappear with volvelle attachments on both sides of leaf 149 and leaf 153. Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment. [8], 228 ll. First edition of a well-illustrated encyclopaedia of astronomical and surveying instruments available from classical times to the time of publication, by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Paolo Gallucci (1538-ca. 1621), a well-known private tutor to the Venetian nobility and founding member of the Second Venetian Academy. It gives a comprehensive summary of the knowledge of astronomy, cosmography and mathematics at the time of Galileo. "It describes instruments designed by others (Finé, Apian, Gemma Frisius, etc.) and gives credit to the original inventors. The one exception to this is the Visorio, which Gallucci claims as his own, but an identical instrument by Waldseemüller can be found illustrated in the 1512 edition of Margarita Philosophica by Gregor Reisch. Other instruments, such as the Hemispherical Uranico (a complicated device used for computations dealing with the moon, sun and stars), appear to be of Gallucci's invention. Besides the usual portable instruments, he also in … [Click Below for Full Description]

With woodcut printers device on title-page. Set in roman and italic types with long passages in Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Samaritan and Ethiopic, shorter passages in Syriac, and zodiac signs, the Arabic, Samaritan and Ethiopic specially cut for use in the present book. Vellum (ca. 1630?). [64], 752, [84] pp. Third and definitive edition, greatly revised and expanded by the author and printed by Plantin's son-in-law using a wide variety of non-Latin types, of a thorough scholarly study of classical, biblical and "oriental" chronology, by the leading linguist and linguistic scholar of his generation ("the greatest scholar of his age" PMM). Three of the non-Latin types (nashk Arabic, majuscule Samaritan and Ethiopic) were cut especially for this work. Scaliger and Raphelengius were far ahead of their time in viewing Arabic as an important field of study in its own right, and they showed sympathy for Arabic culture. Like their predecessors, they used Arabic for biblical exegesis, but they also studied the Quran, medical, mathematical and astronomical texts and other works originally written in Arabic. In the present work, Scaliger studied and compared the calendars and historical chronology of the Greeks, Romans, Persians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Jews and others, attempting to link them so that their dates could be related to those of the European calendar. Alden & Landis 598/3; Palau 1992; Sabin 126; cf. Streeter 32 (1604 Eng. ed.).

TERTULLIAN
Parisiis: Laurentium Sonnium, 1598. 1598 Tertullian Early Church Father Pagan Heresy Jewish Pamelius Latin FOLIO"Truth persuades by teaching but does not teach by persuading." ― TertullianTertullian was a 2nd-century early Christian church author and apologist. His works helped establish Western theology and early Church doctrine, especially those that spoke out against heresy. He is perhaps most famous for being the first Latin writer to use the term 'trinity' in reference to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.Tertullian emphatically defended Christianity against pagans as well as defended 'freedom of religion' as human right unable to be taken away. One of his important apologetics was an anti-Jewish treatise to counteract Gnosticism and other philosophically based doctrines. These defenses, along with other Tertullian works, are collected in this 1598 Latin edition, edited by Jacobus Pamelius. Docketed and signed on verso in a contemporary hand. 690 x 345 mm. Sixteenth-Century Kentish History. HILARIUS, Saint, Bp. of Poitiers. d. ?367
Paris: J. Drouart, 1598. Contemporary flexible gilt-ruled ivory vellum, a gilt wreath in the center, gilt-ruled flat spine with foliage in the compartments, old manuscript title, all edges gilt. EDITIONES PRINCIPES of these two dozen fragments edited by the classicist Nicolas Le Fèvre (1554-1612) from a manuscript in the library of Pierre Pithou (1539-96). The Hilarian texts clearly show Le Fèvre's editorial interpolations and supplied lacunae. Unpublished correspondence on relations between the Eastern and Western Church from the same manuscript follow, and Jos. Mercier adds a biography of Pithou. At the base of the title, Le Fèvre penned a presentation to an unidentified recipient. In excellent condition. ¶Repertorium fontium historiae medii aevi V: 483; Cioranesco 17660 & 17667.

PÉREZ, Antonio. 1539-11611
Paris: s.n., 1598. GILT-RULED FLEXIBLE IVORY VELLUM WITH THE CROWNED CIPHER OF GASTON D'ORLÉANS in a cordiform scutcheon (Olivier-Hermal-Roton 2560,5), panels and flat spine covered in lilies, later gilt-lettered spine label, green and yellow silk headbands, all edges gilt, ruled in red. BASTARD, TRAITOR, MURDERER, SPY - SECRETARY OF STATE: a most remarkable man and autobiography.  A powerful and intimate advisor of Philip II of Spain, Pérez countersigned all imperial edicts, conspired against the king's brother and killed his secretary. Pérez's fall began with accusations of embezzlement, then of treason, murder and adultery (with Philip's mistress). Torture and incarceration followed.  He escaped in 1590, fled to Paris then moved to London to gather intelligence for Henri IV of France. He survived assassination attempts by the Spanish and fomented anti-Spanish sentiment - the so-called Black Legend - through an alliance with the Earl of Essex and through this autobiography.  It was wildly popular as a political document, reviling Spain and her ruler, and as a literary work. Its over-the-top style became the fashion among young bloods in England and France. Pérez has been proposed as the model for the fantastical Spaniard, Don Adriano de Armado, in Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost.  This copy belonged to Gaston d'Orléans (1608-60), who repeatedly conspired against his brother Louis XIII and attempted to kill his chief minister, Cardinal Richelieu. A refined collector, Gaston created two libraries, one in Paris and one at Blois, where he long live … [Click Below for Full Description]

CELLIUS, Erhard. 1546-1606
Tübingen: the Author, 1598. Contemporary gilt stiff vellum, outer rules and a column-roll, inner rectangle with fleurons at the corners, central medallion of a lily among smaller flowers, evidence of four ?orange silk ties. First Edition of CELLIUS' GALLERY OF HUMANIST HEROS - PRIVATELY PRINTED BY THE AUTHOR IN HIS HOUSE. Conceived in 1594 and completed in 1598, these portraits present thirty-five Tübingen University faculty members, active between 1577 and 1597, and two noble patrons then matriculants: Duke Johann Friedrich of Württemberg (age 16) and Prince August d.J. of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (age 18).  Professor of History and Eloquence, Cellius purchased Strassburg scholar Elias Schade's types and press, engaged Johann Kaspar Sigler to oversee the printing, undertook the verse biographies himself and commissioned Züberlin and Lederlein to produce the illustrations after paintings in the faculty senate Assembly Hall. Executed between 1588 and 1593, twenty-two of the canvasses were done from life (Part I of the Imagines) and thirteen (faculty deceased by 1588, Part II) were based on earlier paintings, medals and alba amicorum.  Both Züberlin and Lederlein knew most of their subjects personally and captured their character and vitality more intimately than the original oils. In the woodcuts, the seated and richly attired astronomers, physicians, philosophers, theologians and rhetoricians wear favorite articles of clothing, jewelry and chains. Symbols or tools of their respective professions - distilling apparatus, medical simples, scales of justice and so on … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAURET, Christophe. c. 1547-c. 1615
Paris: P. Du Pré, 1598. Mid-19th-century blind-tooled calf (Hatton, rubbed), spine label and date gilt, red edges. Only Edition. This treats the general concepts of time and its units of measure, the armillary sphere and the heavens, while reconciling astronomical and historical data. It catalogs zodiacal bodies, fixed stars and the planets and records lunar and solar cycles (mentioning Copernicus). With these it demonstrates the Septuagint is more astronomically and historically accurate than the then more widely accepted Hebrew original. Lauret did his own math to establish the dates of specific events based on celestial information. P. Cayet's dedication to Pope Clement bears a few early manuscript annotations by a Protestant. I have found two complete copies in North America. In good condition (a few ink stains, two natural paper flaws affecting four words), Macclesfield stamp and bookplate. Not in Tardy's Bibliographie générale de la mesure du temps (1980). ¶Houzeau & Lancaster, Bibliographie...de l'astronomie 12830; Patrides, "Renaissance Estimates of the Year of Creation" in Huntington Library Quarterly 26 (1963) 315-22; Cioranesco 12780.
