BUONI, Tommaso [attrib.]
Oruito: A. Colaldi e V. Aquilini, 1598. 1598 Lesina Company Dialogues Italian Political Satire Cuisine Finance OrvietoIn 16th-century Florence, there was a rise a style of literature that focused heavily on political satire. One such work was 'Company of the Lesina Dialogues'. This work of unknown authorship describes a group of travelers on the way to Lesina and their conversations. It covers a wide variety of topics including food and recipes, as well as money and finance - things the group sought upon arriving at their destination. While there are no exact connections between the two, the parallels between 'Lesina' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' are evident. Pigafetta/De Bry
1598. Filippo Pigafetta, an Italian historian and traveler first published this 2 sheet map in his Relatione del reame di Congo in 1598. Pigafetta drew on the work of Duarte Lopes, a Portuguese explorer and introduced considerable new detail. This is one of the few early maps to make meaningful alterations to the geography of Africa. It changes the Ptolemaic conception of the sources of the Nile and indicates the location of lakes Victoria and Tanganyika in this respect.Condition: good, still in original 2 margin leaves. Margins vary from 14mm to first outside neat line. Laid down on Japanese paper backing.

Sidney, Sir Philip.
1598. London: Imprinted [by Richard Field] for William Ponsonbie, 1598. Folio, [6], 576 pp. Title within elaborate woodcut frame. Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, rebacked. Title within woodcut border, with the initial blank, woodcut headpieces and initials. Preliminary blank absent, title, first, and last leaf washed and pressed, some browning and spotting throughout, pinhole worming intermittently in bottom gutter and tiny pinholes to a few leaves mid-foredge. With some damp stains and spots, overall a good copy complete without the first blank. Leather bookplate of C. A. and V. Baldwin. § An acceptable copy of the truly rare third edition of one of the most important Elizabethan literary texts. The Evelyn-Garden-Pirie copy also with some repairs and flaws was the last copy to appear at auction ($56,000 2016). William Ponsonby's edition reprinted by Sidney's sister, the Countess of Pembroke, is considered the definitive text of his works to that time, opening with Arcadia, followed by the first printing of Certaine Sonets, which Sidney probably wrote between 1577 and 1581, The Defence of Poesie, and Astrophel and Stella. William Shakespeare borrowed from Arcadia for the Gloucester subplot of King Lear; traces of the work's influence may also be found in Hamlet and The Winter's Tale. Other dramatizations also occurred: Samuel Daniel's The Queen's Arcadia, John Day's The Isle of Gulls, Beaumont and Fletcher's Cupid's Revenge, the anonymous Mucedorus, a play of the Shakespeare Apocrypha, and, most overtly, in James Shirley's The Arcadia. C. S. Lewis describes Arcadia … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
"Striking historical map of the Indian Ocean and contiguous regions of the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia, published by Ortelius in his Parergon. The map includes insets of the North Pole and ""Annonis Periplus"" and ""Ulyssis Errores"" which is centered on Greese. The cartographic sources of this map are based on Homer's Odyssee, Isaac Tzetzes, Ovidius and Ausonius. King Hanno from Carthago is supposed to be the first to sail around the continent of Africa to reach the Arabian sea, and incidentally also the first to tame a lion. Ortelius states that the inset of Hyperborei (the Pole) 'for better beautifying or proportioning of this map', and to remind the reader that in spite of the best efforts of modern explorers, a passage to the Far East via the North Pole has not yet been found by the English or the Dutch. Taken from the 1603 latin edition. Copperplate with fine original colouring, good condition."

1598. ESEMPLARE IN COLORITURA COEVA.

"A very nice map of Greece. Very decorative title cartouche centered in the upper part of the map. Three inset maps in upper left-hand corner and lower-right-hand corner, including maps of Europe, Thessaly and Bithynie. From Ortelius' ""Parergon"", the first historical atlas. The maps of the Parergon illustrate the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian worlds, as well as the mythical past, and were the result of Ortelius's own research. In extensive texts on the versos of the maps, Ortelius summarizes the events depicted and describes his sources. "Argonautica" sets forth the voyage of Jason, according to the pseudo-Orpheus account that takes the voyagers north, up the Don, to the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans and back to the Mediterranean through the Pillars of Hercules. As did the ancients, Ortelius accepts the voyage as historical fact." M. Van de … [Click Below for Full Description]

A very rare 16th Century view of the St. Angelo Castle at the entrance to the Vatican. The work was published by Zacharias Heyns in his rare Le Miroir du Monde, ou, Epitome du Theatre d'Abraham Ortelius, published in Amsterdam in 1598. Zacharias Heyns was the son of Peter Heyns, who wrote the rhyming text for Ortelius' Spieghel Der Werelt, first published in 1577. Zacharias Heyns Le Miroir du Monde . . . was likely an attempt to continue the success of his father, although the maps bear no connection to Ortelius' work. As noted by Burden, all of the maps for this work are woodcuts, making it one of the last atlases to employ this means of printing. The atlas is highly sought after among collectors, prized for its rarity and the unique appearance of its maps. The second edition of 1615 is virtually unknown, with Koeman locating only 1 example at the Bibliotheque Nationale. M. Di Paola, Castel Sant'Angelo nelle sue stampe, p. 93, 29 (descritta come anonima).

MARINELLI, Lucrezia (1571-1653)
Giovanni Battista Combi, 1598. A FEMINIST EPIC POEM 4to (205x150 mm). [12], 252 pp. Collation: a6A-P8Q6. Printer's device on title page. Contemporary flexible vellum, inked title (faded) and shelfmark "2641' on spine (back panel slightly stained, lacking the front flyleaf). Light damp stain to the lower margin of some leaves, two round wormholes in the upper inner margin of several leaves not affecting the text. A crisp and genuine copy. RARE FIRST EDITION (the 1598 edition mentioned by some scholars is presumably a ghost since not a single copy of it can be traced) of this ottava rima religious, mythological, and allegorical poem dedicated to the Duchess of Mantua, Caterina Medici Gonzaga (1593-1629), daughter of Grand Duke Ferdinando I de' Medici and wife of Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga. The poem is divided into ten cantos, each of them beginning with an "argomento" and an "allegoria" written in prose. "Ostensibly, Marinella wrote Amore innamorato, et impazzato to promote the value of the Church, through the allegory of Cupid's religious journey and his ultimate conversion to Christianity. To arrive at Cupid's conversion, Marinella follows the model of the spiritual quest of Date and Petrarch, which highlights the distinction between the carnal love the character embraces initially and the love for God he ultimately discovers. Although Marinella appears to be adopting the voice and techniques of the male writers who dominated the literary canon, she also subtly reveals their weaknesses. What enriches Marinella's approbation of the canon is a gentle but persistent agenda of her … [Click Below for Full Description]

[?England or France], 1598. Manuscript on paper, small folio (295 × 200 mm), pp. [2], 88, [6] (blank), title pasted to succeeding blank. Title with emblematic calligraphic border, text in Spanish in a neat italic hand, rectos and verso, between 30-40 lines per page. Wormed throughout, heaviest to the first 15 leaves, then becoming less concentrated, but each leaf still stable. Contemporary limp parchment, 6 exposed cords at joints, early manuscript spine title. Soiled, slight loss to upper forecorner of upper cover, but sound. A virulent attack on Philip II, King of Spain, attributed to José Teixeira, a Dominican friar exiled in France and England, confessor to Dom António, Prior of Crato, exiled king of Portugal. La Anatomia de Espanna includes accounts of Francis Drake ('Francisco Draco' or 'El Draco') and the English Armada of 1586 and the 1596 capture of Cadiz. The text and its likely author were closely associated with the circle of Elizabeth's favourite, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. It is unpublished in print and known in one other manuscript copy in Spanish and two in English (The Anatomie of Spayne). Our version, while neatly written, contains numerous corrections and additions and is clearly dated 1598, suggesting it may be the earliest of these versions, potentially even the author's original.Written in defence of the independence of Portugal, the title-page is emblematic of the contents: at its head the Spanish royal arms are secured to the twin pillars of 'Miedo' (fear) and 'Sospecha' (suspicion). Granada, 1598. Folio (32 cm, 12.5" ). [62] ff.. Juan Alvarado, citizen of La Fuente, Spain, initiated a suit in December, 1583, to be recognized as an hidalgo. The process was lengthy but economically rewarding despite the litigation and other costs; he died before being granted the status but the case was continue by his son Rodrigo, who was granted the status in 1598. This is a contemporary and certified copy of the final carta ejecutoria de hidalguia, signed by the king of arms and two other royal officials. At the end the city officials of La Fuente also acknowledge the new Alvarado status. The volume begins with a full-page miniature of the Alvarado family kneeling in a field praying, with rosaries, to the Virgin and Child above them in a gilt mandorla. The miniature is surrounded on three sides by a wide composite border, the two sides featuring feature flowers, fruits and berries, an urn, a bare-chested woman, and doves; the third element at the base of the page bears the name of the king gilt on deep blue within a baroque frame. The colors used for this page are black, gold, blue, red, green, white, rose, and brown. Opposite the miniature is another illuminated leaf with the family coat of arms below a large miniature of a battle scene in which an ancestor on horseback is slaying Saracens. The miniature and coat of arms are presented with borders on the left and right accomplished in gilt, rose, purple, white, brown, and green of flowers, birds, snails, butterflies, and ladybugs; their own colors are similarly bright and many. => This double-page painted "spread, … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINDARUS
Ludguni: Apud Ioan. Pillehotte, 1598. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1598 Pindar Ancient Greek Victory Odes Olympic Games Mythology Epinikion Greece Pindar was a 5th-century BC Ancient Greek poet who is remembered for his poetic odes. These odes were written in honor of victors and champions of athletic games and contests. He grouped these odes into four distinct groups of games - Olympian, Pythian, Nemean, and Isthmian Games. These odes praised footraces, chariot-races, wrestling matches, horse-races, and even flute-playing. Each of these odes begins with some sort of homage to a Greek god or Muse and then aligns the athletic champion with a mythological god or hero - quite the praise! This late 16th-century printing was edited by Henri Estienne and published in Lyon in 1598 by Pillehote. Henri Estienne, also known as Stephanus, was notable for his editions in Greek and Latin parallel translations - much like this printing. Armorial leather spanish binding of XVII century belonging to the Marquis of Caracena, Luis Benavides Carrillo y Toledo (1608-68)famous spanish politican and general of the armies that collected a fabulous library of rare books of all subjects. There are few copies of this edition in institutional libraries in Spain but books from the Caracena’s collection are mythical for bibliophiles and collectors. Picatoste bibliography on spanish science(1891) considered this book not the second edition after the first one published in valladolid (1572)but a different and genuine work in itseld. the reason given by the author is that he realized a lack of knowledge by his colleagues minters.the king Philip II ordered to have a meeting all the minters of the spanish crown in 1585 in order to standardize the coinage procedures. The book is divided in five parts. The parts 1 to 4 are a compilation of the differents spanish regulations on coinage and mint with scientific comments on each subject. the book nr 5 is about diamonds and precious stones. Arfe took 13 years to write this work that is considered the most accurate printed in Spain during the XVI century. Ref: Picatoste nr 42. LIPSIUS, Justus
Parisiis: Robertum Niuelle, 1598. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Justus Lipsius was an important 16th-century Flemish philosopher whose work was written to restore a form of Stoicism that would be similar to Christian values. He also wrote an important work on the greatness and history of Rome, 'Admiranda'. This work portrayed Rome in its greatest light, describing the fusion of cultural diversity including Greek, Jewish, Egyptian, Persian, and even Spanish influences on Rome. It is even thought to have been written as a guide for pilgrims and travelers who were venturing to Rome. This 1598 Paris edition was published the same year as the year as the first printing in Antwerp.
