Antonio TEMPESTA (Firenze 1555 - Roma 1630)
1596. "Acquaforte e bulino, 1596. Opera molto rara. Ex collezione Bernfeld, Akim Gregorowitsch (Lugt 127)." "Etching and engraving, 1596. From the set of Twelve Caesars which was made after Tempesta in 1596, published by Tommaso Moneta in Rome. A fine impression, printed on laid paper with ""double encircled fleur - de - lys "" watermark, with margins, trace of horizontal central fold, otherwise in very good conditions. The plates are signed and dated: ""Antonius temp figurauit 1596"". So could be possible that Moneta published the set on behalf of Antonio Tempesta. Complete sets are held in Hamburg, Dresden and the Farnesina, Rome. The Raphael Schiaminossi set of Twelve Caesars (Bartsch XVII.235.98 - 110), which was published by Vaccari under papal privilege in Rome in 1606, is in fact a copy of the Tempesta published ten years earlier in 1596 by Tommaso Moneta. CROCE (Giovanni Andrea Della)

This is one of the most striking and decorative maps of South America and is an important early record of the continent. The map is oriented with north to the right and includes Florida and the Gulf Coast (over 20 place names shown), and the Caribbean. QUAD MATTHIAS
1596. Incisione in rame, mm 227x290. 216 Copper engraving, mm 227x290. Latin text on verso. This map is a reduced version of Ortelius's image of Iceland, reproducing the decorative and fantastic embellishments of animals and sea creatures. Iceland is depicted as an inhospitable land of mountains, volcanos and geysers. Quad, the most prominent of a group of mapmakers active in Cologne and competing with the Low Country atlas publishers, has generally included a vignette portrait of Christian IV, King of Denmark & Norway. A very decorative example of a scarce and sought - after map. From the last edition of "Europae, totius orbis terrarum partis praestantissimae universalis et particularis descripti … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

SIRIGATTI, LORENZO. - [FUNDAMENTAL WORK ON PERSPECTIVE]
Venice, Girolamo Franceschi, 1596. Folio (400x260 mm). Two parts bound in one later (presumably 19th century) sprinkled full calf with blindstamped geometrical ornamentations to boards. Leather on back board renewed. Engraved title-page neatly restored at inner margin, far from affecting imprint; old owner's inscription (""Ex libris Ludovici A. la..."), crossed-out previous owner's name, and traces after a stamp to title-page. With Medici arms at the top and those of Sirigatti at foot of title-page, repeated on title-page of part two. As with all other copies we have been able to locate, the title-page is trimmed, affecting approximately 1 cm of the allegorical depictions in margin. Large woodcut printer's device at the end of the volume. Light occassional discolouring, but overall in very fine condition. 1 ff. (allegorical frontispiece), 3 ff. (of dedication and index), 43 plates numbered with parallel text, 1 f. (large woodcut printer's device), 22 copper engraved plates (including the title-page of the second part) numbered 44-65. i.e. 65 plates in total - fully complete. ¶ The rare first edition of this most important work on the art of perspective: "Questa e la più elegante delle edizioni di libri prospettici per i tipi, pei caratteri, per la carta" (Cicognara 860). Sirigatti's work is famous for being one of the very earliest thorough works solely dedicated to the art of perspective. Combining the visual language of the German book tradition of Lencker and Jamnitzer with the Italian tradition of linear perspective treated previously by Serlio and Barbaro and earlier t …

Wagehenaer, 1596. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 33 x 51 cm.This chart shows the Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland coastlines from Robin Hood's Bay to Coquet Island. North is oriented to the right of the page. Part II of the "Spieghel ..." was first published in 1585 in Leiden by the Plantijn Press and this example of the map would appear to be a first edition - the title text is only in Dutch and text on the verso is also Dutch. The signature of the engraver, Doetecum, appears at lower right. The North Sea is decorated with sailing ships, sea monsters and an elaborate compass rose, while a scale of miles is also given at lower right. The " Spieghel der Zeevaardt " is unique among printed rutters of the sixteenth century, as it was the first to contain maps. Furthermore, it outranks any other rutter of the period with its splendid presentation of charts and text. As such, it stood out as a model for the folio pilot guides of the seventeenth century. Koeman writes; "Thanks to the unparalleled skill of the engravers Baptist and Ioannes Van Deutecom, the original manuscript maps were transformed into the most beautiful maps of the period. The composition and adornment have greatly contributed to the splendour of what originally were simple sketch charts; the typography of the Plantijn printing house further added to the quality of the book". [manuscript; album; original artwork]; Capriolo, Aliprando
1596. Very Good+. Album of 21 pen-and-ink portraits on laid paper after illustrations to Aliprando Capriolo's 1596 Ritratti di Cento Capitani Illustri. Approximately 185 x 143 mm each, tipped to larger sheets of wove paper. Small folio, [Italy: n.d., ca, 18th century]. Cased in full 18th-century Italian (Neapolitan?) brown calf over pasteboard, tooled in gold all-over, covers with two outer border rolls surrounding three double-ruled panels filled with rolls and solid tools decorated with silver paint (now mostly oxidized), inner panel with tulip tools at corner surrounding cartouche of gouges with center lozenge of floral tools, spine with raised bands in seven compartments with cherub tool, rebacked preserving original spine, later endpapers and edge gilding. For binding, cf. BL c154g12/Davis 859; BL c27e18; Davis III, 380. An 18th-century Italian album of 21 pen-and-ink portraits based on Aliprando Capriolo's Ritratti di Cento Capitani Illustri, 1596. These copies were probably made from Pompillio Totti’s edition of Capriolo, Ritratti et Elogil di Capitani Illustri, 1636. Totti altered Capriolo’s engravings, adding the coats of arms seen in many of the portraits here. Portraits include Tamerlane, Gattamelata, Roberto Sanseverino, and the condottieri Vitelli brothers. The binding is in a style common to the Salvioni workshop. Davis Gift III, 380, which Foot suggests was bound in an unknown Neapolitan workshop, shows the same wide outer roll on the covers.

BODIN, IO. (JEAN). - [THE FINAL EXPRESSION OF BODIN'S PHILOSOPHY]
Lyon, Jacob Roussin, 1596. 8vo. Contemporary limp vellum. Title-page printed in red and black. A fine copy. (16), 633 pp. ¶ The rare first edition of Bodin's great final work, his main contribution to the field of natural philosophy, "The Theatre of Nature", which was written in 1590, but published for the first time in the year of his death, 1596. In spite of the fact that the "Theatrum" has been somewhat neglected by modern scholars and has for instance never translated into English in 1997, it is in fact one of his most important works. It constitutes the most systematic exposition of Bodin's vision of the world and is the culmination point of his systematic examination of things, revealing to us the full extent of his entire philosophy. In this Bodin's magnum opus of natural history, a completely new type of natural philosophy is constructed, one which attempts to combine religion with philosophy. By combining philosophical research concerning causes with a pious recognition of divine providence and the greatness of God, Bodin constantly reminds us of the importance of reason and reasoning at the same time that he refers to the Holy Scripture. Jean Bodin (1529/30 - 1596), "one of the towering figures in the history of French thought" (Scott), was a lawyer, economist, natural philosopher, historian, and one of the major political theorists of the sixteenth century. His main work, the "Six livres de la république" is one of the most important works of modern political thought. Here Bodin gave the first systematic statement of sovereignty and coined the term "political scie … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

The second English edition of one of the most important early chronicles of the Spanish conquest of the New World, and one of the two chief accounts of Cortes' conquest of Mexico, the other being provided by Bernal Diaz. This is a reissue of the first English edition of 1578, and one of the handful of English works about the New World to appear in the 16th century. Lopez de Gomara was Cortes' secretary for a number of years, and made use of his unparalleled opportunity to gather information from the primary source relating to the extraordinary exploits surrounding the overthrow of the Aztec empire. "Contains the first printed accounts of the Cortes expeditions to California, the expeditions of Francisco Ulloa, Marcos de Niza, Coronado, the subsidiary expeditions resulting from the last, and the voyage of Cabrillo" - Wagner. The work was first published in Zaragosa in 1552, and quickly went through a number of editions in Spain, Italy, and the Low Countries. ( ) Two other traditions, which account between them for about three hundred published dictionaries, are too important not to consider. ( ) The first is that of small, thematically ordered dictionaries, characteristically in oblong duo-decimo format, with different languages in parallel columns across an opening, many of which had the word Vocabulista in their title. These ultimately derived from an Italian-German dictionary of 1477. (Ximenez de Bagües, Pedro).
This patent of nobility ("Real Provision Executoria de Infanzonía") outlines the history of the Ximenez de Bagües family and the meaning of their assigned coat of arms. Three pages contain an "Arbol Genealogico" starting in 1596 with Don Miguel Ximenez de Bagües; two of these pages are => hand-colored with black and green ink to form leafy branches connecting members of the family tree.Printed patents of nobility are unusual as the documents were normally created as an ornate manuscript using multiple colors. Searches of the CCPB show 16 examples of printed patents of nobility and the Spanish National Library claims only one; WorldCat lists only one example held in the United States. => None of these examples describe the Ximenez de Bagües family. The final leaf is a => full-page copperplate engraving of the Don Pedro Ximenez de Bagües coat of arms in sepia ink, surmounted by a helm and banners, supported by putti, and surrounded with military impedimenta including spears, a club, a bugle, a shield, a drum, cannonballs, and a cuirass. The plate is signed "Js. Dordal" for José Dordal (1780-1808), a Zaragosan engraver known for his portraits, including one of Ramon Pignatelli.

Raleigh's voyage to find El Dorado Sir Walter Raleigh, famous Elizabethean courtier and adventurer, was involved in numerous schemes for establishing English colonies in the New World and in raiding the Spanish empire in the Americas. In the 1580s he was a major figure in the English court and in naval and military ventures. But in 1592 Raleigh fell from grace for marrying one of the Queen's ladies-in-waiting without her approval, and was thrown in the Tower. When released, he had lost much of his power and influence. He sought to regain it, and make a fortune, by a voyage to northern South America to seek the legendary city of El Dorado, where he believed he would find the streets paved in gold. Raleigh's voyage, usually called his second (after his voyage to found the first Virginia colony in 1585) took place under a cloud. He was strictly enjoined from attacking the Spanish, but on arrival in the Caribbean he attacked Trinidad, siezing the Spanish governor, and raiding the coast on Venezuela. He then pressed up the Orinoco River, going more than four hundred miles upstream, where he turned back after obtaining samples of what appeared to be gold.
