Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
"This interesting map presents the regions of the earth that were known in classic times within a large oval projection showing the relative size of the now-known world. The map extends into Asia as far east as Sumatra and south to Madagascar and the Mountains of the Moon in Africa. The climate zones are shown as Zona frigida, temperata, and torrida, with the Zona frigida noted as being uninhabitable. An ornate border surrounds the map and incorporates four small insets: Europe, Asia, Africa and America representing the ""modern"" world. From the 1602 German edition of the Parergon. Copperplate, with fine colouring, good conditions." Anversa Antwerpen Shirley #176; Van den Broecke #186. 450 320

This map of Ulterior Abruzzi, occures for the first time in 1590 Additamentum of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Ortelius. It's based on the work by Natale Bonifacio (1538-1592) , on a single sheet, published in Rome in 1587 (Meurer p. 118). This example was part of 1592 Latin edition of Theatrum. Copper engraving, originals colors, in very good condition. Latin text on verso. Koeman: The unique position held by Ortelius' Theatrum in the history of cartography is to be attributed primarily to its qualification as 'the world's first regularly produced atlas.' Its great commercial success 'enabled it to make so great a contribution to geographical culture throughout Europe in the later 16th century.' Jacob MATHAM (Haarlem 1571 - 1631)
1590. "Bulino, 1590 circa, inscritto nel margine inferiore ""Cum privil. Sa. Cæ. Mtis. / HGoltzius Inuentor Jac.Matham excud "". Sa. Cæ. Mtis. / HGoltzius Inuentor Jac.Matham excud "". After a subject by H. Goltzius. The oval plate represents Mars, seen from behind, wearing a helmet decorated with a dragon and with a sword; he stands with his legs astride accompanied by a wolf in the clouds; a fortification at left; after a subject by Hendrick Goltzius. This is a companion piece to the print of Venus and Cupid attributed to Jacob Matham (New Hollstein 340), see 1887,0722.208. They are dated around 1590, although they were only published around 1601. Strong impression, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to the borderline, a perfectly repired area of about 8 mm at the left edge, otherwise in excellent condition." Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)

He had a notarized agreement with two others, Jacob Lootsman and Hendrick Doncker, to publish pilot books for navigation along the Mediterranean coast, also covering easterly and westerly navigational routes. These were called the Dutch pilot books and remained valid for the period from 1643 to 1680. Goos was also instrumental in publishing the first pilot book for coastlines outside Europe.A further improvement over the pilot books in Dutch cartography was the publication of sea atlases covering the whole world. Braun, Georg
Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "lily in the circle with bird" watermark, with full margins, in perfect condition. [China - Beijing: Khanbaliq]. Flemish / Dutch school.
1590. Woodcut ovoid roundel (60 x 75 mm), contemporarily trimmed to just outside neatline and contemporarily mounted to a larger sheet of paper (in excellent condition). One of the earliest printed views of what is today Beijing: an unrecorded bird's eye prospect over 'Cambalu', or Khanbaliq (on the site of modern Beijing), the capital of China during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). The Yuan Dynasty was founded by the legendary Mongol warrior Kublai Khan, who after conquering China proclaimed his new capital at Khanbaliq, although the city would not be completed until 1293. During the succeeding Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Khanbaliq was transformed into what is known as Beijing. Interestingly, as seen in the view, the walled rectangular form of the old city of Beijing is already evident in the design of Khanbaliq. Marco Polo visited Khanbaliq, but his description of its location was vague. For over two centuries thereafter Europeans were confused as to not only the location of "Cambaluc", but they even sometimes confused its identify with "Cathay" (China), thinking that it was the name for the entire country. This confusion was cleared up by the Jesuit Matteo Ricci during his first visit to Beijing in 1598, when he definitively identified Khanbaliq as the precursor to the modern Chinese capital. The present work is one of a series of 26 woodcut roundels of views and maps that were found together as collection. Charming, mysterious and apparently unique, in the absence of any accompanying documentation we are left to make educated guesses about their genesis. By all appearances … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

GOOS, Abraham and Claes Jansz. VISSCHER.
Hollstein XXXVIII (states 1 and 2 not distinguished); Koeman Vis 1 A [no. 17]- Vis 3; Schilder, MNC VI, 67.2 (4 copies); Vredenburg-Alink, Kaarten van Gelderland 32. Rare second state of a hand-coloured map of the Duchy of Guelders and County of Zutphen (more or less the modern province of Gelderland), with the map engraved by Abraham Goos (1590-1643) and the illustrated borders engraved by Claes Jansz. Visscher (1587-1652). The map, shows Gelderland and beyond, with parts of Brabant, Overijssel, Utrecht, Limburg and Germany. GROOT (GROTIUS), Hugo.
Letter by Hugo de Groot supporting the impoldering of the Wijckermeer, a lake situated between Beverwijk and Assendelft, north of the IJ: now a polder of ca. 700 hectares. Grotius writes in his capacity as public prosecutor of Holland, on behalf of Gerrit (VIII) van Assendelft. Gerrit's father Cornelis van Assendeft begun constructing the "Assendelftse dijk" ca. 1590 to secure the alluvial lands that had recently silted up. The city of Haarlem and others had protested and the Court had pronounced judgment on 6 April 1591. A later annotation suggests the Supreme Court on 15 December 1609 dismissed the appeal and put off judgement until the future. The original double-leaf separated into two leaves, a bit browned and marginal waterstains. Reasonable condition.
