XAVIER, Hieronymous (Jerónimo de EZPELETA Y GOÑI) and Abd al-Sattar (translators) and Ludovicus de DIEU (ed.).
Rahir 473, 486-487; Smitskamp 310-312; Willems 477, 490. First editions of three pioneering works of Persian scholarship prepared for publication by Ludovicus de Dieu (1590-1642) and printed and published by the Elzeviers in Leiden. The first and longest is a life of Christ originally written in Portuguese by an unknown author and translated into Persian by Xavier (1549-1642) and his pupil Abd al-Sattar (active 1597-1615) at the Mogul court. The second work is a life of Saint Peter from a life of the Apostles newly written by Xavier in Persian, perhaps also with the aid of his Persian-speaking students. The third work, written by De Dieu or possibly by Johann Elichmann (ca. 1600-1639?) and edited by De Dieu, is the first printed grammar of the Persian language and served as the principal source for at least two that followed in the next fifty years. At the end it gives the first two chapters of Genesis in Persian translation. With an owner's motto on the title-page. With the title-page of the first work and its conjugate somewhat browned and some slightly browned patches in the third work, but further in very good condition, with only an occasional leaf showing minor marginal blemishes. Spine label worn and tattered, but the binding is otherwise good. Three pioneering works of Persian scholarship, printed in matching style by the Leiden Elzeviers at the height of their careers.

1590. Manuscript pen and ink on paper (pot watermark) in neat secretary hand. [9], [1, blank recto with docketing on verso] ff. Folio (12-1/4 x 8 inches). Disbound, first two leaves loose, some light soiling and edgwear. Manuscript pen and ink on paper (pot watermark) in neat secretary hand. [9], [1, blank recto with docketing on verso] ff. Folio (12-1/4 x 8 inches). 16th Century Manuscript List of Lord High Admirals of the British Fleet. A late 16th-century manuscript listing of Admirals and Lord High Admirals of the British fleet from the reigns of Edward II to Elizabeth I. The manuscript comprises 115 entries, each 6-10 lines in length with transcriptions of the letters patent associated with each appointment. It was compiled during the reorganization of the admiralty office by John Hawkins, just 2 years after the English victory over the Spanish Armada. We locate three other copies of this document: two at the British Library in the Harliean collection (6843.30) and the Cottonian manuscripts collection, and a third in the National Maritime Museum (the latter two copies were extended at a later date into the early 17th century). Despite its title, the manuscript opens with the appointments of Thomas de Coleton in 1264 during the reign of Henry III and William de Leiburn in 1286 during the reign of Edward I. The final entry is for Charles Howard, appointed by Elizabeth I in 1585 and who several years later led the English to victory against the Spanish Armada. Provenance: Sir Thomas Phillipps; H.P. Kraus

MARANTA, Roberto
Venetiis: Bertanum Jo.Antonium (Bertano Giovanni Antonio), 1590. Later printing (?). Vellum. Good. Large, square octavo, 695pp., plus index (at front of text), illustrated. A good copy in contemporary vellum with leather string ties. Leather ties mostly worn, but largely present. Spine cupped and somewhat worn. Insect damage affects many pages, but it's very thin, and there is some wear to the endpapers. Still, overall a clean copy internally with hardly any foxing.
Rarissima. Etching and engraving, circa 1580/90, without signature. A fine impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with "shield with star" watermark, with small margins, perfect conditions. The engraving shows Clement VIII, born Ippolito Aldobrandini (1536-1605), portrait of three … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Viuda de Huberto Gotart 1590- 1592, Barcelona - Second Edition of the Three Parts of La Araucana, the Chilean National Poem a Narrative on Chilean Efforts to Subdue the Araucanian Indians. An?o. 1591]. 12º; 3 parts bound together; Segunda parte de La Araucana (leaves [147]-273) and Tercera parte de La Araucana (leaves [274]-328) have special title-pages which are dated 1590; one half of the first title page missing; ff 19 in 18th century manuscript facsimile; modern vellum. SECOND EDITION OF THE THREE PARTS OF THIS HISTORICAL EPIC POEM THAT NARRATES THE EVENTS OF THE SPANISH COLONIZATION OF SOUTH AMERICA, ESPECIALLY IN CHILE. This celebrated work narrates the first phase of the Chaco War between Spaniards and Mapuche Indians. According to the author, who participated in this conflict, the poem was written during his stay in Chile using tree bark and other rustic elements in lieu of paper. Ercilla had arrived in that country as part of the expedition led by the new Governor García Hurtado de Mendoza. On his return to Spain, Ercilla’s book was published in Madrid in three parts over the course of two decades. THE FIRST EDITION of ALL three parts was published in Madrid, 1590; part one only first published: Madrid, 1569, part two only first published: 1578, and part three only first published: Madrid, 1589. The book was very well received among readers and was an immediate best seller. Camillo PROCACCINI

Rara. A very rare map of the world taken from "Opusculum Geographicum Rarum". Myritius has been described as perhaps the last of the geographers to accept without question the connection of North America with Asia" -- Portraits of The World. The connection of Asia and America is most prevalent on earlier Italian Gastaldi-type world maps, and Shirley notes that the choice of place names on the Myritius also points to reliance on an Italian rather than a Dutch source. Also of significance, "in the extreme south on the map, we now see something new -- an imaginary continent stretching across the pole. Mercator believed a continent would be found there and his theory was blindingly accepted and duplicated on maps for over 100 years" - Portraits of The World. Published in Ingolstadt, Germany in 1590, this handsome oval map is surrounded by sixteen cherubic windheads inside of a heavy decorative border. Only one edition of the map is known, although a proof copy, with lower left and right panels blank, is mentioned by Shirley. Shirley, The Mapping of The World, #175; Portraits of The World, #7, … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Giuseppe ROSACCIO
