ZEHENTNER, Paul.
[36], 752, [10] pp. including engraved frontispiece but not dedication plate.First and only edition of a Latin edifying text on moral and religious issues by the Jesuit Paul Zehentner (1589-1648), preacher at the Graz court of the widow of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II and teacher of grammar, the humanities and the Holy Scripture at Millestadt in Austria. It was intended to highlight the dangers of licentious behaviour and provides our first known reference to the tragedy of Leontius, a play Zehentner saw at the Jesuit University in Ingolstadt in 1615, and which was to serve as a prototype for the Don Juan legend (Keefe, Mozart studies, p. 140). Zehentner dedicated the book to Leonardus Helfridus, Count at Maggau, 26 October 1643, and received a privilege from the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III. Of special interest is the beautiful contemporary binding, probably made in Austria, but inspired by French bindings of the period. With an early owner's inscription and a 19th-century library stamp and bookplate. With occasional minor browning and in the last few pages some marginal worm holes and stains, none approaching the text. With a small chip at the head of the spine and a small hole restored in the front board, and lacking the ties, but the binding is still in good condition, with the tooling crisp and clear. A beautifully bound copy of a rare Jesuit work warning of the consequences of licentiousness.l De Backer & Sommervogel VIII, col. 1482 (Zehentner 3); VD17, 12:108154N (8 copies); WorldCat (5 copies).

VALIGNANO, Alessandro and Luís FRÓIS.
125, [3 blank] pp.First edition of an important Jesuit work, publishing for the first time the annual letters of 1589 and 1590 reporting on the situation in Japan, written by the Jesuit missionaries Alessandro Valignano in "Cansuca" (Katsusa in Kyushu) on 7 October 1589 (pp. 3-42), and Luís Fróis in Nagasaki on 12 October 1590 (pp. 43-125). They provide valuable information on the Jesuit missions in Japan and elsewhere in Asia as well as on the daily life, customs and political situation. This includes the establishment and development of Jesuit residences, churches and colleges, along with other activities, in Katsusa, Arima, Omura, Nagasaki, Bungo and many other cities and regions. Valignano wrote from the newly established Jesuit college at Katsusa, where in the following year he brought in a printing press from Macao and set up the first Jesuit printing office in Japan, publishing its first efforts in 1591.The Portuguese Jesuit missionary Luís Fróis (1532?-1597) joined the Jesuits and worked from 1548 at Goa, where he succeeded Gaspar Berse. His first attempt to reach Japan failed in 1554, but he finally succeeded in 1563 and became one of the first Europeans to gain a deep knowledge of Japan and its culture. With quires C and G slightly browned, a small marginal tear in C8 and occasional minor and mostly marginal foxing, but otherwise in very good condition. An essential source for Japan in the 1580s and especially its relations with Europe and the Jesuits: an eye-witness account by two of the best-informed Europeans on the subject of Japan.l Cordier, Japonica, col. 11 … [Click Below for Full Description]

DRAKE, Francis (subject).
[2], 29, [1 blank] pp.Second edition (the first published outside England), in the original Latin, of a news/propaganda booklet reporting on Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Norris's failed 1589 attack on Portugal, first published in London as Ephemeris expeditionis Norreysii & Draki in Lusitaniam in 1589. They had intended to destroy what was left of the Spanish Armada in northern Spain after the English and Dutch (with help from a storm) sank most of it in 1588, then invade Lisbon where King Philip I of Portugal (who was also King Philip II of Spain) was to be dethroned. They would then take the Azores. Although they succeeded in destroying some remnants of the Armada, they failed to raise a rebellion against Philip in Lisbon and returned home disgraced by the debacle. "One of the most important original sources for the history of the Drake-Norris attack ...; it has never been translated into English ... Historians of the era have generally overlooked it." (Kraus). In very good condition, with only very slight browning and an occasional minor spot. The binding shows a few minor scuff marks and a faded spine, but it is also very good. A rare news book chronicling Francis Drake and John Norris's abortive attempt to unseat the King of Spain and Portugal.l Beers Quinn, Sir Francis Drake as seen by his contemporaries, pp. 45-46 note; Sabin 10123 note; VD16, B8229; cf. BROUWER, Hendrik.
104 pp.First edition of the account of the charting voyage by Maerten Gerritsz. Vries (1589-1646) to the north of Japan, together with the popular account of a Dutch West India Company voyage to Chile under Hendrik Brouwer (1581-1643). Brouwer, one of the directors of the Dutch West India Company, acted as the commander of a fleet of six ships, specially sent to the western coast of South America to activate the trade between the Dutch and the natives. During this voyage, which resulted in the first place in a better knowledge of that coast, Brouwer died at Chiloe and was buried at Valdivia in August 1643. Appended to that journal is the very important account of a charting voyage to Japan. That same year (1643) Maerten Gerritsz. Vries, got "instructions from Governor Van Diemen ... to examine the countries to the north of Japan and to assess their economic and trading potential, particularly with regard to mineral wealth" (Howgego). He visited Hokkaido (Yezo) and Sakhalin, discovered the islands Iturup and Urup and gave his name to the strait between those islands. La Pérouse considered him one of the most eminent seafarers of his time. A couple of leaves slightly browned and a few occasional spots and smudges, otherwise a very good copy.l Cordier, Japonica, cols. 354-355; Howgego, to 1800, B169, V63; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 372; Muller, America 358 ("of the highest interest"); Sabin 8427; STCN (7 copies).

[Click Below for Full Description]

MAURITS, Prince of Orange.
[Declaration for Jan de Roo].[The Hague], 4 December 1589. 1mo (41 x 31.5). Document written in brown ink on one side of a whole sheet of paper in an upright gothic cursive hand, with the autograph signature "Maurice de Nassau" and with his armorial seal (3 x 2.5 cm) stamped on a slip of paper over red sealing wax. With (separately added) Maurits's signature clipped out of another document and mounted on a paper slip. [1] leaf, written on one side. An official declaration by Prince Maurits of Orange-Nassau, stadtholder of the Dutch Republic since 1585, for the benefit of Jan de Roo (d. 1592/1600) from Utrecht, Heer van Tempel (Lord of the estate Den Tempel in Delfland, South Holland, near Berkel, east of Delft), said to be the uncle of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, land's advocate of Holland since 1586. Under these two titles, Maurits and Oldenbarnevelt were the two most powerful figures in the Republic and were at this date on good terms, though Maurits was to have Oldenbarnevelt executed in 1619. The present document records Oldenbarnevelt's first known association with the estate that he was to take over by 1600, raising his social status. As stadtholder, Maurits held a seat in the Raad van State (Council of State) and he here announces that the Council has granted Jan de Roo permission to stay for a while ("eenighen tijt") in Antwerp, and that while he is away Oldenbarnevelt will look after the administration of his estate. Maurits himself adds his own declaration that no one is to hinder Oldenbarnevelt in that administration, apparently meaning that all must acknowledge hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary blind-tooled vellum. 283, [1 blank] pp. First Latin edition of Juan González de Mendoza's very popular work on China, "one of the most influential early books on China to be published in Europe" (Reed & Demattè). The itinerary gives curious details concerning the Canaries, St. Domingo, Jamaica, Cuba, Porto Rico, and especially Mexico.

The second part, "On the Causes of the Greatness and Magnificence of Cities" had originally been published in Rome the previous year. A radical departure from previous Renaissance literature on cities, Botero attempts to explain why some cities prosper and others decline, analysing the impact of the environment and human factors in promoting urban population growth.
