[Click Below for Full Description]

FALCO, Jacobus (Jaime Juan FALCÓ y SEGURA).
Hanc circuli quadraturam invenit.Antwerp, Petrus Bellerus (Peter Belaert), 1591. Small 4to (19.5 x 14 cm). With a woodcut of Euclid (or possibly Archimedes) with an enormous pair of dividers in his right hand and a book in his left, and between the two legs of the dividers a sceptre passing through a crown, and 29 woodcut diagrams. 20th-century half calf. 29, [1] pp. Second edition of an early treatise claiming to have squared the circle (geometrically constructed a square matching the surface area of a given circle, shown to be impossible in 1882). Falco (Valencia 1522-Madrid 1594), a humanistic poet and mathematician, and a Knight of the Order of Montesa, seems to have been a better poet than mathematician. His treatise has been called "more than commonly worthless" (De Morgan, A budget of paradoxes, 1872, p. 36), but it ends with a charming poem. In the first verse, the disappointed squared circle wonders who robbed it of its former noble form, and in the second Falco replies. With the direction line (containing the quire signature and/or catchword) shaved on 4 pages, but still in very good condition, binding fine. An ill-fated attempt to solve an impossible problem, here by someone who thought he had succeeded. Anet 12863042; Netherlandish books 12099, 12097 (misdated) and probably 12098 & 12100 ; USTC 406886, 402179 (misdated) and probably 407081 & 441190; not in STCV.

Filippo Pigafetta, a relative of Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan's companion on his first circumnavigation of the world, based his work on the information he collected from the Portuguese traveller Duarte Lopez, who sailed to the Congo in 1578 and stayed in Loanda until 1587. Pigafetta's important and beautifully illustrated account deals with the geography of the country, its animals, the inhabitants and their customs, the Portuguese trade, missionary activities, etc. Of special interest are his history and descriptions of Congolese tribes and their kings. Half calf (French, ca. 1750), gold-tooled spine. [8], 124, [2 blank]; [8], 196 pp. First edition, second issue, of a dialogue set in Aleppo on the use of barley infusions (often together with other medicines) for the treatment of various illnesses and ailments, written by the personal physician of the Venetian counsul to Syria and later professor of practical medicine at the University of Padova and published during his brief return to Italy between two long stays in Aleppo. The dialogue is set at the bedside of a Venetian merchant in Aleppo who is suffering from pleurisy. Philodicus and Phioliatrus debate the proper treatment, particularly whether to administer a barley infusion before or after purging. Minadoi proposes that they continue the discussion at his house, where they can consult his extensive library. Lettere del Giapone, et della Cina de gl'anni M.D.LXXXIX & M.D.XC. Scritte al R.P. Generale della Compagnia di Giesu.Rome, [Giacomo Tornieri for?] Luigi Zannetti, 1591. 8vo. 17th-century limp vellum. "114" [= 214] pp. First edition of one long and eight short letters written from 1588 to 1590 by Jesuit missionaries in Japan, reporting on the extremely confusing political and religious situation there and elsewhere in Asia. Six of the letters primarily concern Japan, two China and one the East Indies. The kampaku (imperial regent) Toyotomi Hideyoshi (ca. 1536-1598), the de facto ruler of Japan, officially banished Christianity from Japan in 1587, but active persecutions were just beginning in the first few years and the anti-Christian legislation was not yet generally enforced, giving the Jesuits a fairly free hand to continue their activities. The present reports were written from Arima (Kobe), Omura, Firando/Hirado and Goto (Nagasaki), Amakusa (Kumamoto), Bungo/Hoshu (Kyushu) , Meaco/Kyoto, and Yamaguchi. The Portuguese Jesuit missionary Gaspar Coelho (1531-1590) wrote the longest and one of the shorter letters. Though one of the most astute observers of political activities in Japan, he proved naïve in his interpretation of them. Other writers and sources cited for information include Luis Fróis, Antonio d'Almeyda, Duarte de Sande, Egidio della Matta and Franciscus Pires. With a few repairs in the gutter margin, minor foxing and occasional, mostly marginal, stains, but otherwise in good condition. PORTA, Giambattista della.
Phytognomonica ... Octo libris contenta; in quibus nova, facillimaque affertur methodus, qua plantarum, animalium, metallorum; rerum denique omnium ex prima extimae faciei inspectione quivis abditas vires assequatur. Frankfurt, Johann Wechel and Peter Fischer, 1591. 8vo. With title-page printed in red and black, woodcut printer's device, woodcut author's portrait on the back of the title-page and 32 woodcuts in text illustrating plants and their similarity to the various parts of the body. Later vellum. [16], 552 pp. Second edition of Porta's work on the doctrine of signatures and it is sometimes held that he was the real originator of this doctrine. Giambattista della Porta (1535-1615) believed that the external form of man indicates his internal qualities. Expanding this theory to plants, he maintained that the external form of plants reveals their internal healing powers. The plants that resemble particular parts of the body should be considered as suitable medication for illnesses in those particular body parts. "The back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the Maidenhair Fern, which is an ancient specific for baldness; a Pomegranate with its seeds exposed, and a plant of "Toothwort," with its hard, white scale-leaves, are represented in the same figure as a set of human teeth" (Arber, p. 209). Porta also discusses the resemblance of plants and animal parts. A study of the character of the animal would provide clues to the medical qualities of the resembling plant. Phytognomonica was first published in Naples in 1588.In very … [Click Below for Full Description]

1591. Small 4to. 1 p. "Uti cantos gubernatores decet, dum tranquillitas arridet, ad defendendam tempestatem instrumenta expedire: sic par est virum prudentem afflante fortuna, reflantis praesidia comparare." - The astronomer Limnaeus built the first observatory at Jena. "Kepler sent some copies of his 'Mysterium cosmographicum' to Galileo Galilei, Tycho Brahe, Reimar Ursus and also to Limnaeus in Jena from the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1597. Limnaeus gave him - apart from the words expressing praise but which actually were meaningless concerning Kepler's ideas - the information about Brahe Kepler had asked for and which may have promoted his move to Prague" (Schielicke, cf. below). - Trimmed closely and mounted at left edge. Gallonio's only work among his hagiographic collections to explicitly address female martyrdoms, the Historia delle sante vergini romane was published shortly before his more common Trattato de gli intrumenti di martirio. While the Trattato was widely disseminated, both in Italian and in the Latin translation of 1594, the Historia delle sante vergini was never reprinted, despite its equally extensive and assiduous research and arguably more accomplished engravings. The beautiful, though often disturbing, engravings, depicting scenes of martyrdom and torture of various early Christian female saints, are attributed to Antonio Tempesta (1555–1630). Gallonio's book, which was commissioned by (saint) Philip Neri, founder of the Congregation of the Oratory (the religious order of which Gallonio was a member), was prima … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

SPENSER, Edmund
London: for William Ponsonbie, 1591, 1591. FIRST EDITION. 1 vol., 170mm x 121mm, A-Z3, lacking final blank endleaf Z4 otherwise complete, descriptive title-pages each with woodcut borders, expert skillful paper repairs to the blank foredge of the title-page and pages E1, L1, & T1 and lower corner of A2 not affecting text, with the Kent designed book plate of Robert J. Hamershlag. Bound in full brown morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, covers ruled and paneled in an elaborate floral design, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, by Riviere & Son, housed in a fleece lined chemise and an open ended slipcase. Once accepted as being the earliest reference to Shakespeare. The following lines, published in Shakespeare's 28th year, form a part of a lamentation over perversions of public taste: "All these, and all that els the Comick Stage, Are now despized and made a laughing game. And he the man whom nature self had made To mock herself, and truth to imitate With kindly counter under mimick shade, Our pleasant Willy, ah, is dead of late, With whom all joy and jolly merriment Is also dreaded and in dolour drent." "The Teares of the Muses" p.8 The reference was once accepted to be the earliest notice by name of the immortal bard. It is now believed that "Willy" is Spenser's friend Sidney. According to Charles Wisner Barrell "New Milestone in Shakespeare Research" - "Nicholas Rowe states that John Dryden held that Spenser had Shakespeare in mind in describing "Pleasant Willy. - So while Dryden (as well as Edmund Malone) was unquestionably correct in believing that Spenser's "'pl … [Click Below for Full Description]
