Blaeu Willem Janszoon ( 1571 - 1638 ) Amsterdam
Artist: Blaeu Willem Janszoon ( - 1638 ) Amsterdam; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca 1630, 1571. technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; size (in cm): 37 x 48; - description: Map shows total Swabia.Swabia also Suabia or Svebia, is a cultural, historic and linguistic region in southwestern Germany. The name is ultimately derived from the medieval Duchy of Swabia, one of the German stem duchies, representing the territory of Alemannia, whose inhabitants interchangeably were called Alemanni or Suebi.A new Swabian League (Schwäbischer Bund) was formed in 1488, opposing the expansionist Bavarian dukes from the House of Wittelsbach and the revolutionary threat from the south in the form of the Swiss. The territory of Swabia as understood today emerges in the early modern period. It corresponds to the Swabian Circle established in 1512. The Old Swiss Confederacy was de facto independent from Swabia from 1499 as a result of the Swabian War, while the Margraviate of Baden had been detached from Swabia since the twelfth century. Fearing the power of the greater princes, the cities and smaller secular rulers of Swabia joined to form the Swabian League in the fifteenth century. The League was quite successful, notably expelling the Duke of Württemberg in 1519 and putting in his place a Habsburg governor, but the league broke up a few years later over religious differences inspired by the Reformation, and the Duke of Württemberg was soon restored. The region was quite divided by the Reformation. While secular princes such as the Duke of Württemberg and the … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

BUSSCHE, Alexandre van den].
Bibl. Belg. I, p. 408 (B158: 2 copies); USTC 23491 (9 copies). Rare first (and only?) edition of a text book on the application of arithmetic to military science and its importance. It also contains valuable information on the organization of military troops in the 16th century. After numerous examples, many illustrated, it provides 34 problems, followed by a list of classical and contemporary military proverbs and sayings. Alexander van den Bussche, or Alexandre Le Sylvain, was born at Oudenaarde in Flanders and served as an officer under the French Kings Charles IX and Henri III. Although Van den Bussche's name does not appear on the title-page, he signed the dedication to the French councillor and Lieutenant General, Claude de Chastre, dated from Bourges, 12 October 1571.With a few minor and mostly marginal stains and an occasional tiny marginal wormhole, but still in very good condition and nearly untrimmed, leaving very generous margins. The front hinge is cracked, but the binding is otherwise very good. A rare work on the military applications of arithmetic. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

MASSENET, Jules 1842-1912
Paris: G. Hartmann [PN G.H. 1571.], 1885. Deluxe Limited Edition. Rare. The present copy "No. 11 Exemplaire réservé à Monsieur Léon Kerst." As Massenet's Manon was issued in a limited edition of 50 copies shortly before the publication of the present score, it seems likely that this edition of Le Cid was limited to approximately the same number of copies. First performed in Paris at the Opéra on November 30, 1885 to a libretto by Adolphe d'Ennery, Edouard Blau and Louis Gallet after Pierre Corneille's drama (1637). "The first performance of Le Cid confirmed Massenet's reputation as a successful opera composer, marking as it did his return to the Opéra for the first time since Le roi de Lahore eight years previously and coming a year after the double triumph of Manon by the Opéra Comique and the first performances in Paris of Hérodiade (Théâtre Italien). The De Reszke brothers Jean (tenor) and Edouard (bass) sang in Hérodiade and both were engaged for Le Cid... The loyalty of the De Reszke brothers and Pol Plançon (Count of Gormas) ensured considerable success for Le Cid both in France and America, and it achieved 150 performances at the Opéra by 1919." Rodney Milnes in Grove Music Online. Kerst, born in 1906, was a French music critic.. Large folio. Half patterned silk with marbled boards, decorative dark green leather title label gilt to spine. 1f. (recto decorative half-title printed in teal blue and gold, verso blank), 1f. (recto illustrated title printed in brown and black, verso blank), 1f. (recto dedication "A Mes chers Directeurs et amis E. Ritt & P. Gailhard," … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Cartari, Vincenzo (Vincentius Chartarius).
appresso Giordano Ziletti, e compagni In Venetia [Venice]: 1571. 566 p. Illustrated with Eighty-Eight (88) engraved copperplates, printed in various inks so that some have a sepia tone. Some leaves bound out of order. ** Most curious is that signature C was printed on one side of the leaves only, resulting in 8 blank pages. but no loss of text. Age and damp stain and edge wear through much of the text, but not horridly impacting on the plate images. Very worn contemporary limp full vellum binding. 4to. 21.5 cm. Old manuscript and stamped ownerships. The FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. The great illustrated Italian language edition of this famous and important source book for Renaissance artists and poets. They used its representations of the ancient gods and mythological figures as a model for their own works. The popularity and influence of Cartari's book continued through the seventeenth century. Valgrisi issued an almost identical edition at the same time. It is great sport comparing the two issues. "While Vincenzo Cartari's book Imagini delli Dei de gl'Antichi ('Images of the Gods of the Ancients') was neither the earliest nor the most erudite treatise on the Græco-Roman pantheon to be published in 16th Century Italy, in time it came to be the most popular and influential. The book focused on the iconography of the gods, explaining the guises in which they were portrayed, and detailing their several attributes and accoutrements. The book's success was bolstered by the vivid Illustrations accompanying the text. The designs are said to be by one Bolognino Zaltieri. - SURRIAVernacule SURREYbyJOHANNES BLAEUPublished Amsterdam circa 1645A fine original Blaeu copper engraved county map of Surrey. The title is displayed in a decorative cartouche featuring a stag and hound. London is shown in pictorial form and numerous coats of arms add greatly to the visual appeal. Enhanced with early hand colour which remains bright and fresh. Latin text verso.  Some mount burn to the margins can be seen where previously framed, which would of course be masked when remounting/matting. A small closed tear has been professionally repaired verso, barely discernable on the face of the map. Centre fold as issued. A crisp, dark impression. The heavy grade hand laid paper remains robust and stable.  Approx. 20" x 16" (500mm x 410mm) map area only, with good margins beyond. Please see also close up images.Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571 -1638) founded the Blaeu publishing company which dominated the mapmaking industry of 17th century Netherlands. His sons Joan (Johannes) and Cornelius continued the family business after Willem's death in 1638. Their greatest achievement was perhaps the famous atlas  "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive, Atlas Novus", which eventually ran to 12 volumes and was published in several languages from 1635 - 1662. The print shop and warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1672 and Willem's last son died the following year. A GENUINE ANTIQUE MAP GUARANTEED OVER 300 YEARS OLD FROM LINDISFARNE PRINTSD111

MOLINA, ALONSO DE
Mexico: Antonio de Spinosa, 1571. Second Edition, expanded. This is one of the first books to be published in the New World, a Spanish-Nahuatl dictionary issued 50 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. First published in 1555 with only Spanish-to-Nahuatl translations, it is here expanded to translate the Aztec words into Spanish. Alonso de Molina (ca. 1513-85) was born in Spain but immigrated to Mexico by 1523, and quickly learned the indigenous language, Nahuatl. In 1528, he entered the Franciscan convent in Mexico City, and became a friar devoted to converting Mexicans to Christianity. He put together his dictionary to assist his brothers in Christ in communicating their message to the natives, both in sermons and in the confessional, but its value went much further: it is still considered an essential resource for linguists studying Nahuatl. According to modern scholar James Lockhart, "the coverage, authenticity, and correctness of the work are astounding. . . . Molina went far beyond utilitarian basics to include a vast range of vocabulary, making many subtle semantic and grammatical distinctions." As a frequently consulted reference work that saw heavy use, extant copies of the work are found in very worn condition, and most often, as here, incomplete. Our copy lacks the first half of the "A" entries from Spanish to Nahuatl, and the entries for the last part of V, and all of X, Y and Z. In part two, the title page with its woodcut of Saint Francis has been removed, and the final leaf of text, with some X entries and the colophon, has been lost. Accordingl … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]
