He was then called to the bar, and returned to his native Douai, where he married and maintained a legal practice. He died young, leaving the incomplete manuscript. . MAROLOIS, Samuel.
Engraved title-page + 111, [1 blank] pp. + a folding table; engraved title-page + 187, [1 blank] pp.First German edition of the first systematic manual of Dutch fortification, with the accompanying second German edition of a manual of geometry, both by Samuel Marolois (ca. 1572-1626/27), a Dutch military engineer who taught practical mathematics in The Hague, first published in French in 1615 and 1616 but here translated from the French editions of 1627, where Albert Girard for the first time greatly revised and expanded the Fortification. The plates of the Fortification show fortification plans, sections, elevations, perspective (including bird's-eye) views, profiles, etc., as well as building equipment and materials, cannons, and the layout of camps and barracks. Some of the fortification plans are based on real cities, including Coevorden and Oostende. The Geometria covers plane and solid geometry, surveying, mensuration, the making of maps and ground-plans, and fortification. Its plates include surveying instruments, fortification plans and a stunning and detailed view of a town on a waterway in a hilly landscape. A graphic curiosity is the use of a picture of an eye to indicate sighting lines. With an old owner's name. With a couple creases and a marginal tear in the first engraved title-page, the letterpress leaves of the first work somewhat browned and occasional mostly marginal water stains (slightly affecting the last three lines of text or the foot of an engraved figure in a few leaves), but still in good condition, most of the plates very good, and with generous m … [Click Below for Full Description]

The general title printed letterpress on a slip of paper pasted over the 1638 engraved title-page of the French edition, 7 letterpress part-titles, with all together 271 double-page engraved plates, partly by Henricus Hondius. Contemporary blind-tooled calf, new endpapers.
[4], 51, [1 blank]; 39, [1 blank]; 40; [20]; [2], 50; [2], 24 pp.Complete works of Samuel Marolois (1572-1627), including the works of his predecessor Jan Vredeman de Vries (1527-ca. 1606/08) that were edited with numerous additions by Marolois. Marolois was a French mathematician, who published in the Low Countries and taught Henricus Hondius. Here all the works are edited, corrected and revised by Albert Girard, who also revised the mathematical works of Simon Stevin. Marolois's Geometria presents a thorough pictorial course of all aspects of geometry and its application to measurement, proportion, surveying, perspective, etc. His Fortificationis, first published at The Hague in 1615, represents the most outstanding text book, richly illustrated, on the Dutch art of fortification at the beginning of the 17th century. Vredeman de Vries's Architectura, originally the third volume of his Perspectiva, gives a pictorial course in the basic rules of architectural design, with plates by De Vries and his most gifted pupil and successor, Hendrik Hondius (1573-1650). The text consists mainly of the explanations of the plates. In good condition, with the lower outside corner of the first part of the second volume frayed, without affecting the text; some minor water stains and foxing. Bindings worn but skillfully repaired. Rare early editions of Marolois's works, issued with a general title-page and in a contemporary binding.l STCN (4 copies); WorldCat (4 copies); ad 1: cf. HOLLANDUS, Johannes Isaac.
[16], 431, [1 blank] pp.The first edition of any work by the mysterious Johannes Isaac Hollandus, a Latin translation of a German manuscript of his treatises on mineralogy, alchemy and the philosopher's stone, and especially on the use of metal oxides to colour stones and crystals to make fake gems and precious stones. The charming little woodcuts show distilling and other equipment.Little is known about Johannes Isaac Hollandus (active 1572-1610?), but the Görlitz astronomer Bartholomeus Scultetus had a German manuscript of some of his treatises on mineralogy that survives in the form of a copy made in Prague in 1572 and Ben Jonson's 1610 play The Alchemists refers to him apparently as still living. His name suggests he was a Dutchman living abroad, but if his father was called Isaac Hollandus, as has been claimed, he may have been born abroad in a Dutch family. With the red morocco bookplate of Robert Honeyman IV. In very good condition, with only a minor transparent stain at the head of the last few leaves and a small marginal rust hole in 1 leaf.l Duveen, p. 300; Honeyman 1761 (this copy); Partington II, pp. 203-208 & item 1; STCN (5 copies).

Plutarch / Plutarque, trans. Jacques Aymot
Paris: Michel de Vascosan, 1572. Very Good. 7 folio volumes in all, each measuring 14.75 inches tall (37.5 cm), bound in early 18th century acid-bitten calfskin, heavily gilt decorated spines, with the old gilt stamp of Les Mis d'Estampes on each cover, and also the more recent gilt stamp of the Chateau Vertcoeur (a castle built in 1902, 22 km south of Paris now under the dominion of the De Gaulle family). Very good, light general wear to bindings, a few outer joints with subtle strengthening; inner hinges likewise strengthened with ultra-thin pH-neutral tissue. "Les Vies" with printed title page in the first of the three volumes and manuscript titles for the second and third volumes, so exquisitely done that they appear at first glance to have been printed. (8) 734 [ie 1468] (49: index) pp. "Les Oeuvres Morales" in 4 volumes also has a printed title page in the first volume and manuscript title pages of the same quality as the ones in "Les Vies." (12) 668 [i.e. 1336] (90: index) pp. Editio Princeps of both sets, one of the masterpieces of French Renaissance translation. It was from the Aymot translation that North made his English translation of Plutarch, thereafter known as "Shakespeare's Plutarch" for his heavy usage of it for his historical plays. Montaigne called Aymot's edition "Nostre Breviare," and it became an enormously influential set. Another pair of these sets sold separately at a Romantic Agony auction in 2012 for over 8,000 Euros including buyer's premium -- and they had no remarkable provenance or bindings. Braun-- Georg
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Plutarch / Plutarque, trans. Jacques Aymot
Michel de Vascosan, 1572. 7 folio volumes in all, each measuring 14.75 inches tall (37.5 cm), bound in early 18th century acid-bitten calfskin, heavily gilt decorated spines, with the old gilt stamp of Les Mis d'Estampes on each cover, and also the more recent gilt stamp of the Chateau Vertcoeur (a castle built in 1902, 22 km south of Paris now under the dominion of the De Gaulle family). Very good condition, with occasional small waterstain or mark, the va … [Click Below for Full Description]

IBN AL-HAYTHAM, Abu ‘Ali al-Hasan (Alhazen)
Eusebius Episcopius & heirs of Nicolaus Episcopius, Basel 1572. First edition of Alhazen's fundamental work on optics and vision “the most important work of its kind in Arabic literature” (Poggendorf), which influenced Galileo and Kepler and paved the way for the modern science of physical optics. A superior example of this significant work, rare and desirable in contemporary vellum. Al-Hasan Ibn al-Haytham (965–c. 1040), known as Alhazen in the Latin tradition, has been hailed as “the greatest Muslim physicist and one of the greatest students of optics of all times”, building on Ptolemy and Euclid, Arab astronomer and physicist Ibn al-Haytham made significant contributions to the principles of optics and visual perception, his most influential work being his Kitab al-Manazir (Book of Optics), written during 1011-1021, which only survived in the present Latin edition. Translated from Arabic into Latin by Gerard of Cremona. Ibn al-Haytham was the first to explain that vision occurs when light reflects from an object and then passes to one's eyes and the first to deduce that vision occurs in the brain, rather than in the eyes. Friedrich Risner, a protege of Pierre Ramus, prepared the first edition of Alhazen's work from two Latin manuscripts discovered by Ramus. This edition also includes Al-Jayyani's treatise on twilight which is frequently found in manuscripts with Alhazen's Optics. Witelo's Perspectiva was previously published twice before its inclusion in this work (Nuremberg 1535, 1551). “This combined edition served as the standard reference work on optics well into the … [Click Below for Full Description]

… [Click Below for Full Description]
