Munster, Sebastian]
Basel: Ex Officinal Henric Petrina, [1572]. Basel: Ex Officinal Henric Petrina. Good with no dust jacket. [1572]. Leather. This is the 1572 edition of Sebastian Munster's celebrated Cosmographia with hundreds of woodcuts in over 900 pages. The book is a thick folio measuring 12" x 8" bound in old leather. Boards are scuffed and worn but have been treated well with a lovely patina. Spine has been renewed with the original spine laid down. Title page is missing as are the maps with surrounding leaves also missing but approximately 1000 plus pages present. Paper is mostly clean and nice throughout. The last pages from 1273-1333 have some staining and some fraying and wear at the edges, particularly on pages 1317-1319 which have some loss of text. Some pages closely trimmed with some loss at the far edges, but otherwise good. Solidly bound. Pagination is erratic, as is common. On the last leaf is a note from an owner or book dealer with information on the condition as well as what comparable editions sold for in the 1980s. Conforms to OCLC 1042547901. The Cosmographia was one of the most successful and popular books of the 16th century. It passed through 24 editions in 100 years. This success was due to the notable woodcuts (some by Hans Holbein the Younger, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch, and David Kandel). It was most important in reviving geography in 16th-century Europe. The six books include: Book I: Astronomy, Mathematics, Physical Geography, CartographyBook II: England, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sav … [Click Below for Full Description]

MATHIEU, Abel
Veuve Richard Breton [Jeanne Wouernier], Paris, 1572. ______ Format : In-8. Collation : (4), 64 ff. Reliure : Vélin. (Reliure ancienne.). ____ Edition originale. Brunet 3, 1935. USTC 8606.
