BARBARO, Daniele (1513-70). -
Venezia, Borgominieri, 1568 (colophon:) 1569. Small folio. Early 19th century half calf, leather label on spine. Printer's device on title and end, and approximately 200 woodcut illustrations and diagrams in the text, some full page, many taken from editions of Vitruvius, Serlio and Dürer. 195, (13) pp.; small repair to outer blank margin of title, a few small spots and some occasional light foxing, but generally a good copy. First edition, second issue (with the colophon dated 1569), of the first systematic treatise on perspective. It was composed for practising artists and architects and is divided in nine parts; noteworthy is the discussion with accurate illustrations of polyhedra (also beautifully reproduced in their perspective as head pieces), as well as the last chapter which deals with various instruments and contains the first description of a camera obscura fitted with a lens. Cicognara 809. Riccardi I, 76. Vagnetti, Perspectiva, EIIb23. Mortimer, Harvard, 39. Fowler 36. Gernsheim, History of Photography, pp. 7 - 8.

VESALIUS, Andreas:
Venice, Franciscus Franciscis and Johann Criegher, 1568 [first Italian edition, posthumous fourth edition, third folio edition] (the date 1567 on this title page is a misprint, possibly unrecorded?). Small folio (300 x 210 mm), large printer's device on the title page, and numerous woodcut illustrations (some full-page) and initial letters. Early full polished speckled calf, with raised bands, the spine heavily gilt-decorated in compartments, with a contrasting leather title-label; expert restoration to minimal loss at the head of the rear joint, with the joints slightly cracked but very solid; later ownership signature on an early binder's blank, and details of two early owners on the title leaf (both bleeding a little through to the other side); first page (the title) and last page (blank) dusty, foxed and marked, with light stains (on the last leaf, this is a light tidemark in a blank area); tiny tears to four leaves expertly sealed; headline very lightly cropped in a few instances; occasional light scattered foxing; a few pages slightly discoloured or marked; small stains or marks to eight index pages; overall a crisp and bright copy in excellent condition. The Venetian printer 'Francesco Senense (Franciscus de Franciscis) ... in collaboration with a Pomeranian engraver Johann Criegher, whose name is generously coupled with his own as printer, ventured to print a complete text of the 1555 ^Fabrica^ in smaller format and with all of the wood-blocks recut in smaller size.... Ferrando BERTELLI (b. c. 1525, fl. 1561 - 1572).
Copper engraving, blank on verso (Very Good, strong engraving impression with full blank margins, some minor natural paper thinness from verso along parts of centerfold but with no loss), sheet size: 25 x 37 cm (10 x 14.5 inches); platemark: 20 x 29 cm. [Venice, circa 1568]. A very rare early map of Le Havre, France, by the ‘Lafreri School’ master Ferrando Bertelli. - This appealing map by the leading ‘Lafreri School’ cartographer Ferrando Bertelli is one of the earliest printed maps of Le Havre, France, a major port located at the mouth of the River Seine, in Normandy. The map focuses on the fortified Renaissance-style citadel that rises amidst the littoral marshes, with the waters of the Seine Estuary occupying the lower part of the map. The walls envelop the city, while within the various sectors are connected by bridges, while the ‘Arsenale’ (arsenal) lies surrounded by the waters of the port, whose mouth is guarded by the circular tower, labeled ‘Rocca’ (the rock). Bridges exiting the ‘portas’ connect the city to the surrounding countryside. Le Havre played an out-sized role in both French and Atlantic history during the 16th Century, even though it was a ‘new’ city. In 1517, Francois I ordered for a fortified port to be constructed upon the marshland at the mouth of the River Seine in order to variously serve as the maritime gateway for Paris, an assembly point for the Marine Royale, and as a base for fishing. Formally named Le Havre de Grace, its port opened for traffic in October 1518, and the town gradually grew, including the construction of fortifications and fin … [Click Below for Full Description]
