Paolo FARINATI (Verona 1524 - 1606)
1569. Acquaforte e bulino, firmato in basso a sinistra PAUL' FARINAT F. Esempalre nel terzo stato finale. Bellissima prova, impressa su carta vergata coeva, rifilata al rame, in buono stato di conservazione. Etching and engraving, signed at bottom left PAUL' FARINAT F. Example in the third state of three. A good impresison, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the paltemark, in good condition. Mary Magdalene in the desert seated before a cross at the left holding a book with her left hand, right on her breast. The artist himself referred to this etching in his Diary. It had been considered as the iconographical model for a small painting in reverse, commissioned from the artist by Niccolo Troian in 1581, today in Narodní Galerie, Prague, inv. no. 814. According to Albricci 1980, the painting derives from a drawing, today lost, that was transformed into this etching at around the time of the painting's commission. Giorgio Marini argued that Farinati must have based his painting on a preparatory drawing rather than the print. The composition is close to Battista del Moro's painting of the same subject, included originally in the cicle of the Manuta cathedral, today in its sacristy. Bartsch XVI.164.2; Albricci 19.2; Marini in Verona 2006, no. 193.

Nicolo Nelli
Venice: Nicolo Nelli, 1569. The first known catalogue of agricultural brands. The brands cataloged here were applied to horses of the rich and royal, mainly in Italy. This work includes a well-known 16th century engraving showing the names of various ailments of parts of the horse body. About this Edition - This copy has 72 brands. At first I thought my copy was incomplete, but when I came across the Austrian copy scanned online (can be seen in Google Books) I realized that my text was a different variant (different type, different initial capital, etc.); the text in my copy does not match the 2nd edition of 1588's type. Although it's likely my copy is missing a few brands, it is a different variant. There are two variants in the bibliographies, one with 76 plates and one with 87 plates. The Austrian Library copy would be of the larger variant, due to the number of plates. I have not been able to review a copy of 76 plates to see if the type matches. I produced a facsimile gathering of the fourteen plates the Austrian copy has, which mine does not. This gathering was printed on acid free paper, with a similar weave. I sewed the gathering and trimmed it to fit within the box (see pictures). With those fourteen plates added, I believe all the brands of the 1st edition are demonstrated (86 brands, and one horse plate, totaling 87 plates). The added gathering is not for sale, but will be provided (free-of-charge) to the purchaser of my book. Watermark Verification - In my copy are several examples of an anchor within a ring, and a countermark over three rings. As recorded in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

AMBROSE, Saint Bishop of Milan
Paris: Gulielmum Merlin and others, 1569. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Enormous folio printing of the works of Saint Ambrose "No one heals himself by wounding another." ― Ambrose of Milan Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, is the most important ecclesiastical father of the 4th-century and has continually been an influence both in Milan and throughout the Western world even though he has been associated with persecutions of non-Christians. Most of surviving writings are exegetical in nature; letters and essays in which he writes on faith, offices of the church, the Holy Ghost, mysteries of God, commentary of the Gospels and Old Testament, as well as funeral orations. This 1569 edition of the works of Ambrose is an enormous folio printing - five volumes printed in one huge tome.

A second part contains proverbial expressions derived from Roman comic writers, as well as selected Sententiae from Pyblius Syrus, with annotations by Erasmus. These sort of compilations were very popular in their day, and Henri Estienne may have issued them as ?bread-and-butter? publications, in order to raise the capital ? necessary to meet the printing and publicatin costs of his magnum opus, now nearing completion: the Thesaurus Graecae Linguae. This would explain why he began issuing such collections in 1568, the year he lost Fugger?s financial backing.? (Schreiber 175) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

NIKETAS CHONIATES & Nicephorus GREGO.
Vinetia, aperesso Gabriel Giolito di Ferrarii, 1569.3 volumes in 1. 19th century vellum, spine gilt (1 hinge broken but holding). With engraved printer's device on title-pages, woodcut initials and headpieces. (20),127,(1); (20),254,(2); (24),302,(2) pp.The Byzantine historian Niketas Choniates (c.1155-1216), was born in Chonai (Phrygia, Asia Minor, and present day Khonas), hence his name Choniates. He joined his older brother Michael in Constantinople, where he embarked upon a political career, and became an important civil servant. As governor of Thrace he was personally involved in the events relating to Frederick Barbarossa's passage through Thrace during the Third Cusade in 1189, when he lost his province to the Germans.A major work with an eyewitness account of the disastrous capture and sack of Constantinople by soldiers of the Fourth Crusade in 1204.It was written probably between 1204 and 1210 and it is to this work that his fame as an historian of medieval Constantinople rests. Covering the period from 1180 to 1206, it is practically an account of the fateful reigns of the last of the Comneni especially the vicissitudes of the royal city during the Fourth Crusade (1204); its siege, capture, and pillage by the Latin Christians. In spite of its florid and bombastic style, it is of considerable value as a record and for its time, on the whole impartial, of events of which he was either eyewitness or had heard of first hand. Its most interesting portion is the description of the capture of Constantinople.Nicephorus Gregoras (c.1295-1360), Byzantine historian, man of l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pour une édition plus tardive de 1577, voir Heirs of Hippocrates 220.2 : "This is an uncommon posthumous edition of Fernel's landmark work that served as a medical textbook for many decades. Fernel is generally considered to be the person who established physiology, pathology, and therapeutics as standard and discrete categories of medical inquiry. According to PMM [sic], "Both physiology and pathology had, of course, existed in rudimentary form before Fernel; but he was the pioneer who gave these subjects their names and established them as separate systems." The second work in this volume is his treatise on therapeutics and treatments, including those for fevers, syphilis, and epilepsy... Fernel was physician to Catherine de Medici, whose infertility he was credited with curing, and subsequently to Henri II, to his wife, and to his famous mistress, Diane de Poitiers. Dodonaeus, R. [R. Dodoens]
Antverpiae, Christophori Pantini, 1569. Two works in one. Small 8vo (16.9 x 11.1 cm). Title pages with engraved vignettes; 619 pp. [309, (viii); 293, (ix)]; 330 [109; 221] woodcuts in the text, often covering entire pages. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum. Spine with five raised bands; title added in an old hand. The first work exclusively on plants with beautiful flowers and/or pleasant scents, in the second, revised edition, published within a year after the first, and including several additional illustrations. As more often combined with Dodoens's first work, second edition, on vegetables, and marsh and water plants. The first edition of the latter was published in 1566. The fine woodcuts are mostly by Pieter van der Borcht. The vellum over the boards has nice stamp-rolled figurines and Latin text ('spes', 'fides', etc.), as well as two larger centre-pieces apparently of Emperor Charles V on the front board, and another person on the rear board. Boards a bit rubbed and smudged; some minimal worming in the top margin of the first few leaves, and fore margin of the last few leaves. Neat inscription in an old hand on the front free endpaper. Otherwise a very good, clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 514 (Florum); 513 (Historia frumentorum); Stafleu and Cowan, 1486 (Florum), 1485 (Historia). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Somewhat modern quarter calf, and endleaves. Very good. RARE. Very early edition [Another edition of 1561 printed in Lyon by Roullius [283 pages], making this 1569 issue the second printed in Lyons, as determined via WorldCat.]. Porta's work was first issued in four books, 1558, and expanded up to XX books (1589), written first at the age of fifteen. Dedicated to Philip II of Spain. "From 1574 to 1580 Della Porta was repeatedly interrogated by inquisitors, and the publication of his writings was prohibited. Jean Bodin, in his Demonomanie des sorciers (1580), accuses Della Porta of being a 'poisonous sorcerer' and goes on to attack Agrippa. Among the various followers of Paracelsus, Jacques Gohory, denounced Della Porta. As Massimo L. Bianchi has recently demonstrated, Della Porta was up to date on Paracelsus' ideas, although perhaps only through his followers. As if this were not enough, Thomas Erastus, a Protestant critic of Paracelsism, spoke out against Della Porta as well - which leads one to believe that the last two accusations were also reactions against his chemical experiments. This onslaught forced Della Porta, at the height of his fame, to cease published for several years." - Zambelli, p. 28. "Natural Magic was revised and considerably expanded throughout the author's lifetime." The text contents include: I: natural phenomena; II: medicinal preparations; III: alchemy, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alcala de Henares: Andrés de Angulo, 1569. Antique old book. Please see all the photos.

Venice: Nicolo Nelli, 1569. See pictures. A little shelf wear and a few marks to the protective clamshell. Either 4, or 14 leaves missing; the 14 plates provided in facsimile on similar weave paper (acid free), bound into a gathering (8vo) and hand sewn. Still, one ex libris, and several bookseller notes. Title page plate cutout and remounted on matching paper. Some repairs to pages edges (fills). Horse plate still has edge wear, right side (see photos). Occasional mark and/or spot. Bookseller writing on rear pastedown. The first known catalogue of brands (agriculture). The brands cataloged here are applied to horses, mainly in Italy, and mostly of the rich and/or royal. This work includes a recognizable 16th century plate showing the names of various ailments of parts of the horse body, corresponding to an index. This book seldom reaches the market. Princeton's Rare Books and Special Collections refers to their copy as a "highlight". In an article entitled "Brand Books in the Princeton Collections of Western Americana" (William S. Reese), the author writes: "The earliest example known is the Libro de marchi de caualli . . . (Venice, 1569), a copy of which is in the Princeton collection. Although the plates are elegant examples of Venetian engraving, the format of the book anticipates later developments in its duodecimo size, intended for pocketsized portability in the field, and its clear presentation of the branded patt … [Click Below for Full Description]

1569. This is a extremely rare 2nd issue of the Geneva Bible. Contains all five maps which is rare as well as all preliminaries and psalms. This is an extremely rare copy as it was printed on yellow paper which permitted the reader to view it more readily and without danger in the evenings when little light was available. Collates complete and museum quality. This Bible was originally owned by Thomas Randolph who was Master and Comptroller General to all her Majesties postes as well as Knighted and Chancellor of the Exchequer. He later married Anne Walsingham the sister of the famous Sir Francis Walsingham who is best known as the Spymaster of Queen Elizabeth. The second quarto edition of the Geneva Bible albeit a smaller book than the Bible of 1560. Some copies are dated 1568 and others 1569 or 1570 on the title page. In addition to both Testaments and Aporcypha it contains a unique Historic Calendar including "A Supputation of the Yeares World From the Creacion" which as counted by D. M. Luther states the world's age as 5536 in the year 1569. It is printed in Roman type in double columns with all the arguments, notes, etc also the illustrations and five maps as in the 1560 edition.
