[BRABANT - TAXES].
Belg. Typogr. 2399; NCC (3 copies); Netherlandish books, 5652 (5 copies; cf. 5653 & 5654); not in Knuttel. Rare first and only edition in Dutch (two editions in French were published simultaenously) of a regulation by the States of Brabant, stating the taxation of all chimneys, ovens, hearthstones ("asten"), furnaces and forges. The taxation was 20 stuivers in the cities and 15 stuivers in the country, where even smoke holes were taxed. The fine of 3 guilders was imposed for a hidden chimney. Only the mendicant orders were exempted. The taxation formed part of a larger group of special taxations in the territory of Brabant, which included the important cities of Brussels, Antwerp, Leuven and 's-Hertogenbosch, to raise a sum of 600,000 guilders to fund the war against France. A similar taxation in the territory of Holland, which only had to raise 400,000 guilders, led to numerous problems with cities having to pay for the poorer inhabitants and the Prince of Orange and the Count of Horn even refusing to pay (cf. Wagenaar V, pp. 371-377). The heavy taxation during these years led to a growing unrest and political resistance of the Low Countries against the Spanish rule, which finally culminated in the Eighty Years War (1568-1648). With a few small spots and a small corner torn from the fifth leaf, otherwise in very good condition.

SPILBERGEN, Joris van and Jacob Le MAIRE.
Borba de Moraes, p. 826 ("This French edition is much sought after"); Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 362; Sabin 89451; Tiele, Bibl. 1030. First and only edition of the French translation of one of the bestsellers of illustrated 17th-century travel literature, describing one of the most famous early voyages around the world by Joris van Spilbergen (1568-1620), a veteran Dutch East Indies naval officer-turned-pirate, undertaken from 1614 to 1618. A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world, by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617, is added at the end (pp. 117-172) with drop-title "Navigationes Australes". It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discovery of what is still called the Strait of Le Maire, an alternative route to the Pacific. Rich in ethnographic detail, the numerous illustrations in the Miroir include oversized penguins, llamas and an Andean condor with a nine-foot wing span. Naval battles, beleaguered Spanish settlements, and newly discovered islands are also depicted in detail, making the work a valuable compendium of adventure on the high seas during the Age of Discovery. With several owner's inscriptions. With a few manuscript annotations in the margin. Lacking the world map. Washed with a brush, leaving light brown steaks on most leaves, and further with an occasional leaf foxed or smudged and an occasional minor tear. Otherwise a good copy of an extraordinary journal.

AESOP and [Henri-François d'AGUESSEAU].
Hodnett, Marcus Gheeraerts, pp. 38-41; Hollstein XXI, p. 80; Smith, Het schouwtoneel der dieren, pp. 39-41. The third French Aesop adaptation to use the 140 plates originally etched by Aegidius or Gilles Sadeler (ca. 1568/70-1629) for his Theatrum morum (Prague, 1608), here reordered and with a new prose text, probably written by Henri-François d'Aguesseau (1668-1751), Chancellor of France three times between 1717 and 1750. The etching for fable 117 shows an American buffalo (bizon), the earliest image that really looks like the animal familiar to us today. "These added designs by Sadeler are highlights in the history of book illustration" (Hodnett, p. 39).With a 20th-century bookplate and ink stamps. The copper plate for fable 90 had lost much of its detail and some others show slight degradation, but in general they remained in good condition and are also well printed. The corner of 1 leaf has been torn off, and there is an occasional small marginal tear or faint stain, but the book remains in good condition and has large margins. The binding is chipped and cracked at top of the spine and shows a few smaller defects, but is also in good condition. A late showing of 140 of the best illustrations in the Aesop tradition, etched and engraved in 1608.

Medici Lorenzo (de')
Firenze [ma Milano]. 1568 [ma 1812]. In-4 (235 x 170 mm.). cc. 40, (4).
21 x 33 cm, 933 Seiten (inkl. 242 S. Register), Einband: vegetabiles K … [Click Below for Full Description]

Petri Liechtenstein, Venice, 1568. A very rare edition, printed in red and black by one of the earliest printers, with historiated woodcut illustrations, and bound in the beautiful 16th century entrelac strapwork design. The entrelac binding has its origins in the geometric artwork of the Islamic world. The interlocking designs were found in some of the finest libraries in the 16th century and is attributed to binders in Italy and France (though mostly France). The libraries of Henry II, the Medicis, Jean Grolier and Thomas Wotton all had examples of entrelac bindings (causing this design to sometimes be labeled Grolieresque). If you examine the pictures you'll see the remnants of a darker (paint?) decorated the strapwork, though largely extinguished now. The work homed within is quite rare and provides the Offices of the Holy Week (Palm Sunday until Easter Morning). It was printed by the printing house of Petri Leichtenstein, a venerable incunabular printer, and includes his well-regarded colophon at the rear. OCLC only records two copies of this work in the world's libraries, both printings from other years. No recorded copies from this year. (OCLC #879224379 & #954787086) Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 13.5 x 8 x 2 cm, 12mo. [SORBIN.] PIERRE DES VAUX DE CERNAY.
Petit in-8 (155 x 97 mm.) [Click Below for Full Description]

It is not complete as these rarely are,the reason why it's up for sale is because I just got another one that is actually complete but missing the title page. This one offered is as I found it,it has all of the preliminaries other than the general title page and the first page The Summe of all scriptures. The Bible itself is missing page 43 in Exodus appears to have been torn out ends on the first page of the book of Jude though it does have one page of Revelation so missing all afte than including the tables at the end. So missing 14 of the last 15 pages at end, probably with some patience you might find the missing pages pop up once in a while on Ebay. Bible measures approx. 15 by 10 inches I have provided a lot of jpegs to give you a true idea as to condition the first 2 pages have sections missing but re-enforced,first page of preface missing part of page a number of pages throughout the Bible are repaired at the edges with some text loss with the worst being in the book of Isaiah 11 pages with text loss on about 5 or so. Extensive staining and damp staining throughout still a great Bible and an impressive one for display. Ferrando BERTELLI (attivo a Venezia seconda metà del XVI secolo)
Molta rara." View of the city from the very rare "Civitatum Aliquot insigniorum et locorum..." by Bertelli.

GALILEI, Vincenzo
Venice, Girolamo Scotto, 1568 [- 1569]. ______ Format : In-folio. Collation : 161, (3) pp. Reliure : Maroquin rouge, dos à nerfs. [Click Below for Full Description]

Alberti, Leone Battista.
Venedig Franceschi, 1568. (24 x 16,5 cm). (8) 426 (6) S. Mit figürlicher Holzschnitt-Titelbordüre, Holzschnitt-Porträt des Verfassers verso Titel, einigen Textholzschnitten und zahlreichen figürlichen Holzschnitt-Initialen. Halblederband des 18. Jahrhunderts. "According to the dedication by Bartoli to B. Ammannati (p. 289), this is the first printing of 'Della Statua'" (Fowler). - "One of the most brilliant dilettantes that has ever lived, Leon Battista Alberti had a great visual capacity, a strong sense of beauty, and passionately believed that human dignity resides entirely in work. His books on painting and statuary, 'De pictura' and 'De statua', are among the most important documents of the early Renaissance. In 'De pictura' Alberti makes several fundamental contributions. He distinguishes between tangible and apparent, that is, optical or perceptible form. He offers a theory of visual rays, a discussion of color, and an account of experiments with the optical box. For the discussion of the visual pyramid, the modern definition of the pictorial representation of perspective, Alberti is entirely dependent on his Florentine background. The novelty of his idea is that he offers a mathematical demonstration of the construction of pictorial space" (Millard Bd. 4, S. 18). [Click Below for Full Description]
