COUNTER-REFORMATION LITERATURE). (BINDINGS - CENTRE-PIECE). DU PRÉAU, GABRIEL
[Paris]: Michel de Roigny, 1567. FIRST EDITION. This attractively bound and rare work by French scholar and zealous opponent of the Reformation Gabriel Du Préau sets forth the essential doctrines of the Catholic Church in the form of a vernacular dialogue that would be easily accessible to the layperson. Du Préau (1511-88), also known by the Latin name Prateolus, was the author of a number of theological works supporting Catholic teachings, most notably a widely-read classification of heretics, "De Vitis Lectis et Dogmatibus Omnium Hereticorum." The binding here is a style popular in the late 16th century, distinguished by the presence of a medallion with a design inspired by Islamic art. We have not been able to identify the "Ferry" whose motto and name appear on the covers, but a late 19th century dictionary of French heraldry mentions the motto appearing on a book that bore the date 1572. The 1901 Book Prices Current records the auction of such a book, a French guide to civil law for non-lawyers. Perhaps the person for whom they were bound was a prosperous bourgeois, educated enough to have a personal library, but not scholarly enough to read Latin. This is one of the rarer works by Du Préau, with USTC and OCLC finding just four copies (two in France, two in the Netherlands), and none at auction since at least 1975. The book seems to be absent from the market: we could find no record of any auction sale on either RBH or ABPC.. 170 x 107 mm. (6 3/4 x 4 1/4"). 16 p.l. (last blank), 456 [i.e., 453], [1] pp. FIRST EDITION. Original dark brown calf "cen … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Bertelli Ferrando inc.
Molto rara, ottima conservazione.

ARGARIA, Casparo.
Rome: Antonio Lafreri, 1567. 425 x 565mm. A few tiny nicks to edges. An extremely rare map-view of Messina from the mainland (although the strait is depicted as a very narrow channel), with a 167-point key. The dedication is to the Duke of Bibona (Bivona?). Little is known of Argaria other than the fact he produced two maps: the environs of Naples (1538) and this plan. The publisher, Frenchman Antonio Lafreri (or Antoine Lafréry, c.1512-77), became a major figure in Italian cartography with his 'assembled-to-order' books of maps which had the figure of the Titan Atlas holding up the globe.

Lyon: Huchin for Frellon, 1567. See pictures. Spine/joints/hinge renewed; a nice job, well matched with original boards. Some shelf wear, age to original boards. Bottom of 1st blank endpaper (flyleaf) has been removed, same page has writing at top. Small corner loss of 1st printed page "Chronologia" and 1st map (next page). No title page. Marginal annotations, occasional textual marks including strikethroughs, intermittent water mark (more present near ends). Ink dot top margin pages 315 to 340. Map at 457 missing its bottom that would have folded out. Missing colophon. Although the title page, and colophon have been withdrawn, I've went through the other pages and (despite a few printer's numbering errors) the Bible is complete. Although 450 years old, still entirely readable and the re-spine eliminated any structural problems; strong book that will last hundreds of years more with care. The most interesting 16th century bible I've had. I love the faded gauffered edges, in an early style. In addition, there are a number of engravings, maps, charts, prologues, indices, etc.. Rare, the OCLC records only two copies; one at the Universitatsbibliothek Heidelberg (OCLC #315584645), and a second copy at Columbia University (#83326666). after Wierix, Johannes (1549-c. 1618)
"Allegory of the political situation in the Netherlands in the year 1567. All the different factions are depicted as animals. While the Dutch Lion sleeps (bottom right), the fox and the wolf take the goose out of a cage. In the background, to the right, several men are enjoying some free time drinking and sleeping under the trees, while their cattle are being stolen. The present state is updated to the situation of 1619, with inscriptions identifying each animal. On the bottom a legend and other text in Dutch, French, German and Latin by Richard Lubbaeus. Mirror image copy to Wierix's original. Signed at bottom: ""Francisco Antonij excudebat / Cor. I ex."". The left margin presents traces of former binding; 1619. "."Etching on paper with margins; plate mark: 205 x 310 mm, total: 274 x 274 mm; state III/3; rather cooked paper, traces of previous passe-partout; the most external margins are a bit damaged; small stain on the bottom center; rather sharp impression. FORLANI PAOLO

This Latin edition comes from the famous Johann Hentenius Louvain translation. This edition was printed in two column format along and features the Apocrypha. It is bound in decorative, blind-stamped boards with one functioning original clasp. According to Darlow and Moule, "In 1559 appeared the first edition of the Latin Bible published by Christopher Plantin, the eminent Antwerp printer. It was a reprint in octavo of the Louvain Bible." Paolo FORLANI
Venezia, 1567.
Rara. Beautiful map of Brabanti, modeled on the prototype made in Antwerp by Jacob van Deventer,1536. The Deventer can be considered as the father of Dutch cartography, and its maps, made between 1536 and 1545, were printed at home only between 1558 and 1560. His maps were instead printed in Rome in 1556 (then 2 years before Antwerp) by Michele Tramezzino, and engraved by the Dutchman Jacob Bos. In Venice the maps of Deventer were first engraved by Paolo Forlani, for the publisher Camocio (1563-66). This map, engraved by Girolamo Olgiato for the publisher Bolognino Zaltieri in 1567, is a faithful copy of the map by Forlani / Camocio of 1566 (Tooley 144). Magnificent example, with margins, in excellent condition. Rare. Karrow 25, 1.5; Novacco 4F 152; Tooley, 145

Llull, Ramon; Raymond Lull; Tarrega, Raymund de
Cologne: J. Birckmann, 1567. Cologne: J. Birckmann. Good with no dust jacket. 1567. Vellum. [8], 376, [2] pp. Printer's device on the title page, a woodcut of an alchemy furnace -- an athanor -- on the verso of the title. In contemporary limp vellum. This is a central collection of the alchemical works once attributed to Catalan philosopher and mystic, Ramon Lull. The new thought is that the texts were written by Ramon de Tarrega (c1295-1371), a converted Catalan Jew who was devoted to the occult sciences. The author of this work used large sections of an earlier work by John of Rupescissa (1310-1362) in a treatise linking alchemy and medicine, here specifically focusing on the the production of the "5th Essence," an elusive material which could keep a body from aging, cause living things to be incorruptible and immutable, change dross into precious stones, and change nature such that it reached total glorification! Along the way, the alchemist conveys much information on treating various fevers, administering laxatives, how to practice chirurgy, how to administer various drugs and poisons, etc. The book is a small octavo measuring 6" x 4", old limp vellum with yapp edges which have been repaired in a few spots, vellum is dark with some stains, nice old patina, remains of ties. Verso of first blank has old odd bookplate and it and the title have sold old owner inscriptions inked out. Pages are thumbed and corners are aged, occasionally foxing and old small spots, minor occasional underlining, flat spine with title in ink and old spine label. A third copy is available with another vendor at a higher cost. Although the title page, preface, and colophon have been withdrawn, I've collated the rest of the work and the Bible is complete. Paolo FORLANI (Attivo a Venezia seconda metà del XVI secolo)
Opera molto rara." "Map of the port of Mal … [Click Below for Full Description]

Domenico ZENOI
[Click Below for Full Description]
