MERCATOR, Rumold.
Beautiful large map of the world prepared by Rumold Mercator (1541-1599), who took the cartographic information from his father Gerard Mercator's great world map of 1569, but converted it from the Mercator projection, most popular for navigation, to the equatorial stereographic projection, which shows the world in two hemispheres. It first appeared in 1587, seven years before Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) died, so he probably advised his son and approved the result. The present example comes from the 1602 edition of Mercator's great atlas, published the year the VOC (Dutch East India Company) was established, and is coloured by an early hand. Mercator's 1569 map, in 21 sheets, saw a limited distribution and survives in only 3 copies, so the present map served as the standard world map and cartographers throughout Europe copied it or used its cartographic information. The still theoretical Antarctica includes a northern protrusion near the island of New Guinea, hinting at the still unknown Australia. The Arctic, depicted as four large islands, encouraged the futile search for a northwest passage (global warming may yet create it).The present copy shows two cracks in the copperplate, but they are still in an early stage. With some wear along old folds, but otherwise in very good condition.l Karrow 56/17.10; Koeman & Van der Krogt I, map 0001:1A & atlas 112, map 1; Shirley 157; Thomas Suárez, Shedding the veil 31.

If this is so, it would explain both the shape of the Malay Peninsula and also its extension into the Southern Hemisphere.' (Suarez). Die kleine mit 'Sinus Permimulicus' bezeichnete Bucht östlich der Aurea Chersone wäre demnach der Golf von Thailand. [YAIR, James and Charles STEWART].
[1], [1 blank], XXVIII, 97, [1 blank] pp.Second edition of an account of the trade relations between Scotland and the city of Veere in Zeeland, the Netherlands. The first staple contract, which set out the privileges to be enjoyed by Scottish traders, was drawn up in 1541. The introduction of the work is an historical account of the staple written by Charles Stewart, who was at that time the deputy conservator at London. The main text is written by James Yair, a minister of the Scottish Church in Veere (Campvere). Veere was Scotland's staple port from 1541 until 1799. Scottish merchants could export certain goods such as wool, coal, tiles, arms and ammunition to Veere without paying customs. Veere was a prosperous trading city during the 17th and 18th centuries. With the armorial book plate John Whitefoord Mackenzie (1794-1884), whose library was auctioned in 1886. Also with a small faint library stamp of the Solicitors Supreme Court on the foot of the title-page. With a few spots, otherwise in very good condition. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, sides somewhat rubbed.l Cat. Goldsmith 11426; ESTC T085936; Hanson 6258; Kress 7278.

LIVIUS, Titus.
[14], 567 ll.First Dutch edition of Livius's classic history of Rome, beautifully illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts, many measuring about 12×14 cm. Written about 10 AD, it is the most extensive work to survive from classical antiquity, and the present translation for the first time acquainted a wider audience in the Low Countries with the "knightly, manly deeds" (as the title puts it) of classical heroes. The woodcuts provide a fascinating view of clothing, architecture, military and other equipment, boats and sometimes trades and other human activities. The view they provide is not of classical Rome, however, but of the early sixteenth-century, for the artists made very little attempt at historical accuracy. A few showing battles, sieges, councils, visitations, etc. are used many times to illustrate different events, but others more specifically reflect the subjects of the text. So we see a hundred-and-twenty-foot dragon, the death of Archimedes, the use of elephants in battle, the burning of books (very topical in 1541!) and many other lively scenes.Owner's entry on title-page, partly erased. Leaves *2-5 misbound, title-page and leaf 207 detached, water stains, affecting the text in the first and last few quires. Front hinge and head and foot of spine damaged. Overall in good condition. An influential and beautifully illustrated edition of a great classic.l Belg. Typ. 1958; BMC STC Dutch, p. 123; Funck, p. 401; Machiels L404; USTC 403306; not in Bibl. Belg.

With Verdussen's woodcut device. 2 works in 1 volume. 8vo. 17th-century vellum. [1], [1 blank], [18], 330, [1], [1 blank]; "96" [=102], [1 blank] [1] pp. Ad 1: second edition of Goes's early and very popular work on Ethiopia, including his translation of the exposition on the principles, practices and rituals of the Ethiopian Christians by the Ethiopian emissary Zagazabo, who was sent to Portugal in 1527 to win recognition for the Ethiopian church as a member of the Western Christian community, and an exchange of letters between Manuel, Dawit, João and the Pope concerning the Ethiopians, previously published by Paolo Giovio. As an introduction, Goes added his own history of Portugal's relations with Ethiopia and the search for Prestor John. Although the great Portuguese humanist Damião de Goes (1502-1574) never visited Ethiopia himself, the present work is important because of its uncensored native sources. It contained so many references to rituals and practices considered shocking that it was banned, causing Goes to be dismissed from the Portuguese court. It also includes a reference to Columbus and his voyages.Ad 2: First and only edition of a description of Spain by the Belgian physician Ludovicus Nonnius (1553-1645), well known to today's art world … [Click Below for Full Description]

SECUNDUS, Janus (Joannes or Jan EVERAERTS).
Opera. Nunc primum in lucem edita.Utrecht, Herman van Borculo, 1541. With Van Borculos winged stag and book device on the title-page and another on the verso of the otherwise blank last leaf. Small 8vo (16 x 10.5 cm). Contemporary vellum wrapper. [324], [3 blank], [1] pp. Rare first edition, in the original Latin, of the collected poetic works of the humanist and neo-Latin poet Janus or Joannes Secundus (Jan Everaerts) (1511-1536), who "ranks among the foremost poets of the world" as "the only famous [16th-century] Dutch poet" (Guépin, p. 231): "one of the most significant and enduring poets of the Renaissance" and "the outstanding Latin love poet of the northern Renaissance" (Price, p. 1). Although not quite twenty-five when he died, he published numerous poetic works from 1532 to 1536 but left most of his work unpublished at his premature death. Much of his poetry appeared for the first time in the present posthumous edition. Janus is most famous for his "Basia" (kisses): 19 lyric love poems influenced by Catullus. Janus's three books of elegies, especially the first book, comprising 11 love poems to his (possibly fictional) first love Julia, are also masterpieces of neo-Latin poetry.Although revered internationally in his own century and influential throughout the 17th and 18th centuries (among his avid readers were Ronsard, Fleming, Huygens, Milton and Goethe), Janus's name has been eclipsed in the Netherlands by those of Cats and Vondel, in part because they wrote in Dutch.Janus Secundus was born in The Hague. LIVIUS, Titus.
Roemsche historie oft gesten, . . . nu erstmael in onser Nederlantscher spraken ghedruckt.Antwerp, (colophon: printed by Jan Grapheus and sold by Jan Gymnicus), August 1541. Folio. With the title-page and each of the 3 part-titles in a frame built up from 4 woodcuts (part 2 with different blocks than the others), well over 200 woodcuts in the text (including repeats). Late 17th-century calf, richly gold-tooled spine. [14], 567 ll. First Dutch edition of Livius's classic history of Rome, beautifully illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts, many measuring about 12×14 cm. Leaves *2-5 misbound, title-page and leaf 207 detached, water … [Click Below for Full Description]

Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus
Hieronymus Froben & Nicolaus Episcopius, 1541. [Early Printing - Basel - Froben press] [Early Greek typography] [Holy Bible - New Testament - Greek text & Latin translation] [Humanist Biblical Scholarship] Printed at Basel in Officina Frobeniana [by Hieronymus Froben & Nicolaus Episcopius], 1541-1542 [1st title-page dated 1541, second 1542; both colophons dated 1542). Text in Greek and Latin (some words and passages in Hebrew). Both parts - New Testament in Greek and two different Latin translations, and Erasmus' extensive 'Annotationes' on the N.T. (each part with its own title, colophon and collation) bound together in one massive folio (of over 1400 pages!), issued as Volume VI of the 1st Edition of Erasmus' Complete Works, edited by Beatus Rhenanus (1485 - 1547), Erasmus' friend, editor and biographer. As in the 1527 fourth edition: the NT is printed in three parallel columns, which contain the Greek text, Erasmus' own Latin version, and the Vulgate, respectively. "The Greek text follows the fifth edition (1535)" (D. & M.), although, according to Reuss, the reading of I Cor.12.2 is here given from the 1514 Complutensian rendition. Complete examples in very good condition, like the one offered here, with both parts the NT text and Erasmus' Annotations together are quite rare! First printed in 1516, Erasmus' edition of the new testament in Greek, edited with Latin translation and commentary by Erasmus, "formed the basis of the New Testament translations of both Luther and Tyndale and hence had profound influence on later Protestant versions of the Bible" (PMM). As the 1st … [Click Below for Full Description]
