Paris: François Gryphe, 1540. A BELGIAN HUMANIST TRAVELS THROUGH ITALY4to (217x157 mm). [8] leaves. Collation: A-B4. Printer's device on title page. Early 20th-century half cloth, some light browning, a fine copy from the library of Abel Lefranc.VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of this speech held on October 25, 1540 in the Collège de Sainte- Barbe in Paris. In it the Belgian humanist gives an account of his travel to Italy. In autumn 1539 Latomus was granted leave to visit Italy at the king's expenses. Over Lyons and the Mont Cenis he attained Turin and continued to Milan, Brescia, Padua (where he listened to the lectures of Alessandro Sozzini and met the scholar Lazzaro Buonamici), Verona, Venice (where he attended the lectures of Giovanni Battista Egnazio), Ferrara (where he was welcomed by Renée de France and where he met Celio Calcagnini), Bologna, Florence, Siena and Rome. CYRIL of Alexandria.
24, 454, [25], [1 blank] pp.First edition of Agelli's translation (and first separate edition of any version) of Cyril's "the adoration and worship of God in spirit and in truth", a commentary on the Old Testament concerning Mosaic law, written in the form of a dialogue between Cyril and Palladius. It is the first commentary by the patriarch of Alexandria, Cyril of Alexandria (ca. 376-444), whose "precision, accuracy, and skill ... as a theologian has often been remarked" (The Oxford Dictionary of Saints). "St. Cyril uncovers this mysterious, allegorical, and immutable sense of Mosaic Law and adds a coherent sketch of Old Testament foundations of spiritual preparation. In particular he dwells on the Old Testament prototypes of the Church" (Florovsky). It is published by the female printer Sybille de la Porte (1540-1608), widow of the printer Henry de Gabiano. With 17th-century owner's inscription on title-page. [24], “573” [=604], [15], [1 blank] pp.First complete edition of an important study of emblems, combining theory with (illustrated) examples, by Scipione Bargagli (1540-1612), "one of the chief authorities on devices" (Praz). The first part was first published in 1578 and republished in 1589, while the second and third parts appear here for the first time. It is presented as a dialogue between Scipione himself, Belisario Bulgarini and Ippolito Agostino, who engage with other theorists such as Girolamo Ruscelli and Paolo Giovio. Of special interest is the lengthy treatment of emblems composed or commissioned by women.Preliminaries browned, a few leaves slightly foxed, a tiny whole in the foot margin of one leaf (affecting part of the catchword) and a smudge obscuring several letters in the main text, otherwise in very good condition. SCALIGER, Joseph Justus.
[1], [1 blank], [1], [1 blank], [9], [1 blank], LII, [4], 784, [46], [2 blank], 59, [1 blank] pp.Fourth edition, one of two simultaneous issues, of a thorough scholarly study of classical, biblical and "oriental" chronology, by the leading linguist and linguistic scholar of his generation ("the greatest scholar of his age" PMM), the French orientalist Joseph Justus Scaliger (1540-1609). As a devout Christian, Scaliger was certainly no friend to Islam, yet he was far ahead of his time in viewing Arabic as an important field of study in its own right, not just a tool for converting Islamic peoples to Christianity, and he showed sympathy for Arabic culture. Like his predecessors, he used Arabic for biblical exegesis, but also studied the Quran, medical, mathematical and astronomical texts and other works originally written in Arabic. In the present work, Scaliger studied and compared the calendars and historical chronology of the Greeks, Romans, Persians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Jews and others, attempting to link them so that their dates could be related to those of the European calendar, which had itself just been reformed under Pope Gregory. Scaliger's work in this area "towers above that of his contemporaries" (PMM) and served as an essential key to modern historical scholarship.Internally in very good condition, only occasionally a small stain. Binding slightly stained, spine discoloured, but otherwise good.l Alan Crown, Samaritan scribes and manuscripts, pp. 276-277; Smitskamp, Philologia Orientalis 65.

1540. Condition: Buone condizioni. Scopri la nostra libreria > #88625 Dante Historiato da Federigo Zuccaro. Federico Zúccari (Sant'Angelo in Vado 1540 - Ancona 1609) visse e operò in Italia centro-settentrionale e in alcuni paesi europei: Spagna, Olanda, Francia e Inghilterra. Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus
Hieronymus Froben & Nicolaus Episcopius, 1540. Very Good antiquarian condition. Complete. [Early Printing - Basel - Froben press] [Holy Bible - New Testament - Exegesis] [Humanist Biblical Scholarship] [Church History - Reformation] Printed at Basel in Officina Frobeniana [by Hieronymus Froben & Nicolaus Episcopius], 1540. Text in Latin. Embellished with numerous fine historiated woodcut initials. Rare collected edition of Erasmus' entire New Testament Paraphrases, issued as Volume VII of the 1st Edition of Erasmus' Complete Works, edited by Beatus Rhenanus (1485 - 1547), Erasmus' friend, editor and biographer. Initially composed between 1517 and 1524, the Paraphrases were occasionally revised by Erasmus until his death in 1536. Originally, Desiderius Erasmus only intended to paraphrase the epistles of Paul and Peter. Urged by the Bishop of Sion, Matthäus Schiner, Erasmus eventually paraphrased all the canonical epistles, the Gospels, and Acts. The influence of Erasmus's work extended to England, and in 1547, Edward VI of England ordered an English-language version to be displayed in all parish churches. Erasmus yearned to make the New Testament an effective instrument of reform in society, church, and everyday life, and to this end he composed the Paraphrases, in which the words of Holy Scripture provide the core of a text that was vastly expanded to embrace the reforming "philosophy of Christ." "Erasmus was not content with the simple, more or less factual annotation of the New Testament, but went on to paraphrase, which enabled him to soar high and dig deeper. It covers not only units from cities in the Italian states but also from Constantinople (Istanbul), Aleppo, Tripoli, Damascus, Cyprus, Corfu, Rhodes and Crete. Venice was at this time the centre of European trade with the Near and Middle East and the present work is invaluable as a record of the panoply of commodities traded in the Mediterranean at the beginning of the 16th century, including pearls, silks, wool, saffron, chestnuts, figs, galangal, vegetable oils, gold and silver. On leaves 3, 11, and 12, Pasi records the tariffs on pearls in Damascus, Aleppo, Cairo, Alexandria, Constantinople and Venice. With a few contemporary manuscript annotations. DORSTEN, Theodor.
Botanicon, continens herbarum, aliorumque simplicium, quorum usus in medicinis est, descriptiones, & iconas ad vivum effigiatas: ...Frankfurt am Main, Christian Egenolff, (colophon: March 1540). Folio. With about 320 mostly botanical woodcuts in the text, about 70 woodcut decorated initials plus a few repeats, many cut by Sebald Beham. 16th-century sheepskin parchment (extensively reworked). [10], 306 ll. First edition of Theodor Dorsten's Latin adaptation of Eucharius Rösslin's extensive and beautifully illustrated German herbal, Kreutterbuch, first published (also by Egenolff) in 1535. It includes about 284 botanical illustrations originally cut for the Rösslin edition, many based on the pioneering naturalistic illustrations cut by Hans Weiditz for Otto Brunfels's Herbarium vivae eicones (1530-1536). Most show complete plants including roots, some show fruits or other parts of plants, and about 36 mostly smaller woodcuts (including a few repeats) show containers for the medicines or other relevant objects. Egenolff clearly saw the importance of the new and more accurate style of illustration, and engaged the best woodblock cutters to produce his blocks. While Brunfels's Herbarium had no text beyond the names of the plants, Egenolff saw the importance of combining the images with detailed botanical medical texts, first in German by Rösslin and here in Latin by Theodor Dorsten (1492-1552), a physician and professor in Marburg, Germany. The book therefore played a considerable role in bringing botanical medical knowledge to a wider public, both in Germany and abroad. Dorsten … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elenchus harmoniae, ... (Colophon: Antwerp, Matthias Crom, 1540). 8vo. With a woodcut vignette at the foot of the title-page and the head of the first page of the main text (illustrating Luke 11), 1 full-page and 97 half-page woodcut illustrations by Levinus de Witte (including a few repeats). 17th-century limp sheepskin parchment. [164] ll. Third (first illustrated) edition of Osiander's Harmony of the Gospels. It brings the four Gospels together to make a single narrative, prefaced by a comparative synopsis of the content of the four Gospels. Having studied Hebrew and Greek in Ingolstadt, Andreas Osiander (1496-1552) became a priest in 1520. He subsequently came in contact with supporters of the Reformation and became a prominent Protestant leader. In 1548 he was appointed professor of theology in Königsberg. His last years there were, however, overshadowed by the bitter debates caused by his controversial doctrine of divine justice: the so-called "Osiandrische Streit". Osiander's writings consist for the most part of expositions of the scripture, sermons and essays on the theological controversies of the day.Osiander's present Harmony of the Gospels is his only work that was also published outside Germany. The woodcuts are ascribed to Levinus (Liévin) de Witte (ca. 1503- 1578 or soon after), a painter, designer and perhaps also a woodcutter, wo … [Click Below for Full Description]

On leaves 3, 11, and 12, Pasi records the tariffs on pearls in Damascus, Aleppo, Cairo, Alexandria, Constantinople and Venice. With a few contemporary manuscript annotations. The preliminary matter foxed and the bookblock slightly trimmed, shaving some of the manuscript annotations, otherwise in very good condition. c. 1540, Roma. Maestro desconocido. ?Giorgio Vasari       Formato (cm): 28,5x20,5 [Attributes: First Edition]

Provence jurist and celebrated macaronic poet, Antoine Arena (?1508-63) sifted royal edicts and letters patent and the acts of the Provence parlement (highest appellate court) to set out the privileges and wages of all court officers and the fees levied by them for services, including the preparation and execution of documents. In Provençale, the final five pages list the towns and fortified castles in Provence under the authority of the French crown. Portonariis, the local Aix bookseller, commissioned the book, and the Lyonese printer, Payen, struggled to cast off copy. To fit text, one medial quire has 45 lines per page at the beginning, 49 lines in the middle and 45 again at the end. In good condition (small portion of the first blank margin neatly supplied). ¶Dollieule, Antoine Arena 70-71; Reboul, "Antoine Arena, notice Bibliographique" in Revue sextienne 5 (1884) 114-15; Cioranesco 2608; Brunet Suppl.
