(Petit, successeur de Simier). Dernière édition gothique, dont la première est à la date de 1524 contenant de nombreuses lettrines à fond criblé. Il s’agit du plus important écrit de Jean Bouchet (1476-1557) qui fut un célèbre écrivain, ami notamment de Rabelais. Ces Chroniques ne se limitent d’ailleurs pas qu’à la seule Aquitaine. Divisé en quatre grande parties, l’auteur décrit de nombreuses anecdotes sur les têtes couronnées de l’Europe mais aussi personnelles, comme par exemple l’empoisonnement de son père Cette nouvelle édition puise principalement sur celle de 1537, avec quelques variantes que l’auteur lui-même semble avoir désavoué. (1540-50 circa). in-8 piccolo, ff. (60), caratt. tondo, pagina di titolo in rosso e nero, grande scena mitologica con Piramo e Pisbe in silografia sullo stesso foglio. Artistica legatura ottocentesca in piena pelle marrone scuro, decorata a secco da filetti e bordure floreali sui piatti, dorso a nervi con fregi a secco e titolo oro, tagli dor. Rara edizione della prima metà XVI secolo, arricchita della bella incisione in legno, di queste rime amorose e versi occasionali assai eleganti, che risentono dell'ispirazione petrarchesca. Alcune edizioni videro la luce a Milano e Venezia a partire dal 1525, tutte assai rare. La lingua italiana dei versi di Camilla appare in questa edizione influenzata dal dialetto veneziano. L'autore nacque a Sassoferrato nel 1486 (m. 1539), appartenne all'Ordine dei minori conventuali, e scrisse versi d'amore per "ricreare la mente offuscata dagli studi filosofici". Risulta dai suoi scritti che da più parti gli fosse rimproverata la sconvenienza delle sue poesie e della sua condotta. La sua figura, che per un lato rappresenta un caso limite nella crisi attraversata dagli Ordini religiosi nella prima metà del Cinquecento, occupa un posto di primo piano nella storia della poesia popolare; fu pure un madrigalista assai noto. Nuremberg, Johann Petreius, 1540. 4to. (148) pp. With a small floral vignette on the title-page and two woodcut initials. 18th century full vellum with gilt title label on spine. First edition under this title, and the definitive edition of the Renaissance. Al-Hasan is "often quoted in astrological works of the Christian middle ages under the name Albubather. He flourished about the middle of the third century A.H., for Ahmad b. Abi Tahir Taifur (died 280 = 893) mentions him in his Kitab Baghdad as a contemporary" (Suter). Notable is the scholar-printer responsible for the work: Johannes Petraeus was soon to cement his historical reputation by printing Copernicus's "De Revolutionibus" (1543). In the present work, Petraeus offers his own justification for printing the work of Al-Hasan alongside such luminaries, for "true majestic Astronomy is on a higher level than the things intelligible to students. However this should not dissuade them from its handmaiden, Astrology, as its fruits and rewards are adjudged to be pure, and itself offering many advantages" (preface to the reader). Astronomy was properly regarded as being essential for deriving accurate figures needed for the sciences of Astrology and Prognostication; a heavily annotated copy of this edition of Al-Hasan is known from Tycho Brahe’s library (cf. (12), CLXXII, legatura coeva in piena pergamena rigida con tre nervi passanti, tracce di legacci, titolo manoscritto al dorso e al taglio superiore, mancanza alla cuffia inferiore e al dorso nei punti in cui passano i nervi. Frontespizio in rosso e nero entro bordura con vignetta xilografica in alto e in basso due putti alati reggono stemmi con le iniziali IFZ sormontati da croce doppia, la data 1540 appare più come 1510 (probabilmente qualcuno a tentato di spacciarla per tale). Testo su due colonne in carattere gotico, capilettera ornati, una carta bianca editoriale al termine delle prime 12 non numerate, una bella vignetta xilografica alla prima carta del testo con il nome dell'autore in basso, marca tipografica al verso dell'ultima carta: due leoni sorreggono uno stemma con le iniziali IFZ appeso ad un albero con giglio tra le fronde. Eccetto una lieve gora al margine del fascicolo b, bell'esemplare in legatura coeva particolarmente nitido nell'impressione di questa terza edizione giuntina dell'importante trattato del giureconsulto veronese Bernardo Cipolla, pubblicato in princeps a Brescia nel 1490: va ricordato che in tutte le edizioni è compreso un certo numero di consigli appartenenti ad altri professori padovani, quali Angelo da Castro, Antonio Roselli, ecc. Legatura in mezza pelle ottocentesca con filettini dorati. Rara edizione originale di una delle prime opere di architettura relativa alle antichità di una città minore. Le illustrazioni sono di Giovanni Caroto, pittore veronese e raffigurano archi e antichità romane, fra l'anfiteatro ed il teatro. Esemplare nel complesso discretamente conservato e completo della grande tavola, quasi sempre mancante: l'opera è difficilmente in condizioni perfette. Presenta numerosi piccoli difetti, generalmente un po' vissuto, con alone d'umido, qualche carta un po' rifilata, alcuni piccoli restauri di vario genere, rilegato con utilizzo anche di materiale antico di provenienza liturgica al marg. int., qualche mancanza, evidente alla grande tavola ripiegata, restauro al dorso. He photographed the Hopis, Zunis, and Pueblos, among other tribes. His portraits of Native Americans humanize, rather than romanticize, his subjects. The process he used most frequently was the platinotype or platinum print, known for its non-reflective surface, rich detail, broad tonal range and permanence. The platinum process was widely used in the United States and Europe from 1880 through the 1930s, when the cost of platinum became prohibitive and the silver-based processes gained prominence. Vroman moved to Pasadena, California in 1892. He soon opened a book, stationery, and photo-supply shop there in November of 1894. He traveled through southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico on seven separate trips from 1895 to 1904 to document the area's landscape, Indians, and Indian communities. Vroman was employed as a photographer by the Bureau of American Ethnology, (a research unit of the Smithsonian Institution) for two separate trips to the Southwest, the former involving a climb to the Enchanted Mesa in central New Mexico to prove the existence of Indian habitation and the latter a documentation of Southwestern pueblos and cliff dwellings.

All leaves unnumbered. 68 (last blank),124,94 leaves. 3 large coat of arms of Markgraf von Brandenburg (on the two title-pages and on verso of the second) and one bischopric. Some large woodcut initials. The last part partly printed in red and black and many leaves with musical notes. The first part with a faint dampstain in inner lower margins, decreasing and with some headlines in old hand added in upper margins. A few contemporary underlinings and notes in the second part. Title-page to the second part with a hole in the paper in lower margin, no loss of letters. Some annotations on the title-pages. On the first title-page and on one of the last leaves a contemporary owners name: "Johannes Køppring". Internally clean and fine.On front free endpaper a printed linen-label (47 x 85 mm) "Privateigentum des Führers/ Nr.", under this is typed (after "Nr.") "556/27 - 1933 - Geschenk der Stadtbibliothek/ Lübeck dem Kanzler/ Adolf Hitler". Rare edition of this commentary on the ninth book of the treatise dedicated by ar-Razi (also known as Rhazes; 850-923 or 932) to Almansor, the Prince of Chorosan (with the text). "The manual, known as 'Nonus Almansoris', was popular among mediaeval physicians" (cf. GAL S I, p. 419). The work discusses special pathology but excluding pyrology and was one of the most popular textbooks at medical schools and faculties well into the Middle Ages (cf. Hirsch/H. I, 171). Rhazes is considered the greatest mediaeval physician next to Avicenna; he also conducted alchemical experiments. According to his biographer al-Gildaki, he was blinded for refusing to share his secrets of chemistry. - A woodcut on the final page of the preliminaries depicts ten different surgical instruments, including a tongue depressor, a forceps, and various instruments for cauterization. Un raro trattato cinquecentesco sulle antichità al di fuori di Roma, pubblicato nello stesso anno del trattato del Serlio.Nel De origine, sotto il grande ritratto al verso del frontespizio,è un'iscizione indirizzata al lettore in cui si dice che un tale Sebastiano Serlio, "quidam Sergius", nella sua opera aveva riprodotto in maniera non corretta, perché non li aveva visti, alcuni monumenti veronesi. Il volto dell'uomo di profilo potrebbe aecondo alcuni essere di Serlio stesso.

An early Tudor translation of an important early medical work on the curative properties of the American wood known as "guaiacum," a text first published in Latin in 1519 as De Guaiaci Medicina et Morbo Gallico by the German scholar, poet and reformation thinker Ulrich von Hutten (1488-1523). Hutten's treatise, which was quickly translated into several languages, popularized the use of guaiacum to treat several conditions, especially the scourge of syphilis, and accelerated the importation of this medicinal agent from the Caribbean. Indeed, the work likely convinced the Fugger banking family of Augsburg to seek a monopoly on the import of the drug from the Americas, a concession they later secured from the Spanish crown in exchange for a loan. In this work, Hutten gives a full account of the appearance of syphilis in Europe along with its various treatments. Hutten also recounts in detail his own struggle with the affliction (at one point, a friend counsels him to commit suicide) and the various therapeutic (and sometimes gruesome) regimens to which he was subjected, making the treatise one of the earliest patient narratives published. An early merchants' guide to the measurements of the Mediterranean and Near East, this pocketbook for sixteenth-century Italian traders is one of the foremost sources for the study of the metrologies of Venice and her trading partners in the early sixteenth century. It enabled conversion between Venetian currency, weights and measures and units of other Italian city-states, European neighbours and more exotic locations in the Levant, North Africa, the Near and Middle East, including Constantinople, Aleppo, Tripoli, Damascus, Cyprus, Corfu, Rhodes, and Crete. Pasi's manual is invaluable as a record of the panoply of commodities traded in the Mediterranean at the beginning of the sixteenth century, including pearls, silks, wool, saffron, chestnuts, figs, galangal, vegetable oils, gold and silver. On fols. 3, 11, and 12, Pasi recorded the tariffs on pearls in Damascus, Aleppo, Cairo, Alexandria, Constantinople and Venice. It is very likely that the famous merchant Balbi carried a copy of this classic with him on his travels. First printed in Venice in 1503, and again in 1521, this 1540 edition appears to be the third and was followed by another in 1557. -- Some brownstaining to preliminary matter; a few contemporary ink marginalia slightly trimmed in the course of the 17th-century rebinding. A very good, clean, copy in early 19th-century blue straight-grained morocco gilt, by C. Smith with his ticket on fly, covers gilt ruled to panel design, spine with gilt ruled raised bands, aeg. extremities slightly rubbed. Rare, beautifully printed and illustrated popular edition of Francois Dassi's French translation of Caviceo's 'Libro del Peregrino', first published in the author's native Parma in 1508, and remarkably popular, both in Italy and France, where it went through more than twenty editions during the following fifty years, though it has not been reprinted in its entirety since 1559, perhaps due to its robust attitude to physical love. Caviceo introduces his romance with the appearance of Boccaccio's shade who praises the book's dedicatee, Lucrezia Borgia; unsurprisingly the Peregino is full of echoes of Boccaccio's writings, and is also imbued with the atmosphere of the Ferrarese court of Ercole I d'Este which Caviceo knew well. He appears also to have used Colonna's Hyperotomachia as a model, as the Peregrino similarly contains a multiplicity of digressions on a diverse range of subjects in a Latinate prose full of classical allusions. Oltre al frontespizio decorato con il titolo inserito in una cartouche con sullo sfondo la citt... di Firenze ed al piede le armi dei cavalieri, i disegni degli stemmi, disposti in testa agli alberi geneaologici, sono oltre 550, la maggior parte colorati all?epoca. La centralit... dello stemma dei Lippi Neri tra gli scudi araldici ai piedi del titolo indica una committenza da parte di questa celebre stirpe di mercanti e notabili fiorentini. Uno Zanobi Lippi, presentato qui a c. 49r, divenne cavaliere proprio nel 1682 e le armi delle famiglie dei suoi avi per parte femminile (Lucalberti e Zati) si ritrovano in rilievo accanto allo stemma dei Lippi in calce al frontespizio. Come si evince dalla correzione apportata al frontespizio, l'autore Š uno dei primi e pi-- importanti storiografi dell'Ordine: il veronese Bartolomeo Dal Pozzo (1637-1722). Arrivabene a Giovanni Soranzo datata 15 novembre 1540. Il nome dell'autore viene citato nella dedica ed in fine al volumetto. Prima edizione, estremamente rara, di questa commedia in cinque atti in prosa, con prologo, ambientata nella città di Pisa. Rappresentata per la prima volta a Siena nel 1536, alla presenza dell'imperatore Carlo V, la commedia mette sul palcoscenico ben ventisette personaggi che parlano italiano, spagnolo, dialetto napoletano e ''uno scolare tedesco esprimentesi in un italiano barbaro con qualche mistura della sua lingua nativa'' (Sanesi pp. 334-6); la trama, assai complessa, prevede il lieto fine per i due protagonisti, Ferrante e Ginevra: la pozione che erano stati costretti a bere non era veleno, bensì bevanda innocua, così i due ''potranno godere del loro costante amore'' (Sanesi). La commedia, al pari delle altre due del Piccolomini (L'Alessandro e L'Hortensio), ebbe grande successo ed un numero straordinario di edizioni. L'autore (Siena 1508 - 1579) fu intellettuale di cultura vastissima: letterato, filosofo, astronomo; tra i fondatori della celebre Accademia senese degli Intronati, col nome di Stordito, insegnò filosofia morale a Padova e poi a Roma; nel 1574 ottenne il titolo di Arcivescovo di Patrasso. Raised bands and blindtooled compartments. Double sewn headbands. With brass clasps and catches. Handwritten title on front edge. All leaves unnumbered. 68 (last blank),124,94 leaves. 3 large coat of arms of Markgraf von Brandenburg (on the two title-pages and on verso of the second) and one bischopric. Some large woodcut initials. The last part partly printed in red and black and many leaves with musical notes. The first part with a faint dampstain in inner lower margins, decreasing and with some headlines in old hand added in upper margins. A few contemporary underlinings and notes in the second part. Title-page to the second part with a hole in the paper in lower margin, no loss of letters. Some annotations on the title-pages. On the first title-page and on one of the last leaves a contemporary owners name: "Johannes Køppring". Internally clean and fine.On front free endpaper a printed linen-label (47 x 85 mm) "Privateigentum des Führers/ Nr.", under this is typed (after "Nr.") "556/27 - 1933 - Geschenk der Stadtbibliothek/ Lübeck dem Kanzler/ Adolf Hitler". As Hitler became Reichkanzler in 1933, this could indicate that he received the book as a gift when he was installed as Chancellor. Erste Ausgabe, eine weitere erschien 1545 in Venedig. - Montius war Professor für Logik, Philosophie und Medizin in Padua und Bologna (Geburtsjahr unbekannt, gestorben 1553). In diesem Werk setzt er sich mit den Lehren Galens (Galenus von Pergamon) auseinander (Methodus medendi war eines der Hauptwerke Galens), die bis in die Neuzeit hinein die medizinische Ausbildung bestimmten. Damit ist sein Buch der zweite Galen-Kommentar innerhalb weniger Jahre, der nach Johann Agricolas "Scholia copiosa in therapeuticam methodum..." (1534) in Augsburg verlegt wurde. - Einband etwas wellig und fleckig (Spuren eines Wasserschadens), ansonsten aber fest und gut erhalten. Breitrandiges, nur am Kopf beschnittenes Exemplar. Der Titelholzschnitt ist deutlich größer als der Satzspiegel. Innen leicht gebräunt aber kaum fleckig, im ersten Teil blasser Wasserrand im oberen Eck. Durchgehend immer wieder Anmerkungen eines sachkundigen zeitgenössischen Lesers am Rand (saubere Handschrift mit Tinte).

Precede l'opera dedica a Ercole d'Este, duca di Ferrara (p. III) e proemio esplicativo ai lettori (pp. IV-V). Titolo, ad opera di Francesco Salviati, inciso da Marco Dente, raffigurante un gruppo di uomini e donne intenti a discorrere e a consultare il libro del Marcolini nel "Giardino di pensieri"; Cervolini (Marcolini, p. 20) e Mauroner (Incisione di Tiziano, 42) attribuiscono però l'ideazione del disegno del frontespizio a Tiziano. Al verso del titolo ritratto dell'autore a piena pagina racchiuso entro cornice architettonica sorretta da due cariatidi (la stessa usata dal Marcolini nei volumi del Serlio e dell'Aretino, impressi qualche anno prima). Alle pp. VI-VII elenco dei 50 quesiti che si possono rivolgere al libro (suddivisi tra uomini, donne e per uomini e donne) e rimando alle 50 tavole relative. La prima sezione del libro contiene 50 silografie poste nella parte superiore del recto di ogni foglio raffiguranti immagini simboliche, vizi e virtù, accompagnate da 90 carte da gioco che circondano l'incisione e da altre 45 carte disposte nel verso della carta a fronte disposte a forma di croce. Antiche note manoscritte e didascalie poste in calce alle illustrazioni con riferimenti a personaggi della tradizione cavalleresca. Seconda edizione del più importante trattato italiano di scherma del Cinquecento, e primo vero trattato sistematico e completo di scherma moderna, la cui fortuna è testimoniata dalle molte edizioni che si susseguirono nel corso del secolo. L'edizione veneziana del 1517, citata da alcune bibliografie come prima, è in realtà ormai riconosciuta come una ristampa del Sessa della fine del '500. Le 84 xilografie, in questa edizione "più fresche" che nella prima (Modena 1536), per il resto identica (cfr. Gelli), rappresentano schermidori nelle diverse figure e posizioni e sono state attribuite a Francesco Barattini o a Giovanni Britto (il monogramma "b" è ben visibile su alcune di esse). s.n.]. Italian translator Berni (1497/8-1535) was so good at writing serio-comic and satirical poetry with double meanings that the style took on his name. Written in terza rima, the present early "Bernesque" collection showcases his aesthetic by gathering his work with that of three of his peers. Donadoni notes Berni's "poems deal with the most futile, most cunningly indecent, or the most paradoxical themes," and these examples are no exception -- they cover a variety of topics including Pope Adriano and Aristotle (History of Italian Literature, I, 240). Court official Mauro (1490-1536), bishop Della Casa (1503-56), and apostolic abbreviator Bini (1484-1556) were all friends of Berni and here imitate his poetry, although none of them comments on a pope. The text is neatly printed in single columns and split into three different parts with a sectional title-page for each, the latter two reading "Tutte le terze rime del Mauro, nuouamente raccolte e stampate" and "Le ter'ze rime de messer Giouanni dalla casa, di messer Bino et d'altri." Though several editions were printed in a short period of time in the 16th century (1538, 1540, 1542, 1545), extant copies are few and far between.
