Leonhart Fuchs
Neobar, Paris, 1539.
Ad 1: Rare first edition in the original Dutch (a German translation appeared in the same year at Cologne) of one of the most important poetical works by the Dutch Renaissance poet Jan (Baptist) van der Noot (ca.1539-ca.1595) illustrated by the famous engraver and theologian, Dirck Volkertsz. Coornhert (1522-1590). The 17 finely engraved illustrations show episodes from the 12 books of the poem. Two bear the signature of the engraver Dirck Volkertsz. Coornhert, the latter, depicting Van der Noot's conversation with Theude, dated 1571. This shows that Van der Noot was already working on his Olympia epics by that time and that Coornhert, Hendrick Goltzius's master, engraved the plates while living in exile in the German Rhineland. The work was probably largely finished at that time. The woodcut with the allegorical obelisk with "hieroglyphs" (pictorial images in a wholly Western style) is one of the earliest examples of mystical interest in ancient Egypt.Ad 2: First and only edition of a poem glorifying the Duchy of Braband. Ad 3: First edition of a collection of laudatory poems in honour of Van der Noot's patrons, originally meant to serve as some kind of prologue to the Cort Begryp and Lofsang (ad 1 & 2). There are no page numbers or quire signatures, and Waterschoot notes, "For each new buyer Van der Noot arranged the leaves differently" (E Codicibis Impressisque, p. 436).Some occasional minor thumbing, a few spots and a couple small waterstains in the upper margin, otherwise in very good condition. Binding slightly rubbed … [Click Below for Full Description]

CALVIN, Jean.
[6], "464" [= 462], [16] ll.Rare first edition of the first Dutch translation of Calvin's commentaries on the Epistles of Saint Paul and the Epistle to the Hebrews. By 1539 Calvin had planned to write commentaries on all the Pauline Epistles, and he began with the book of Romans (first published in 1540). In 1551 all parts were finished and published together with the Epistle to the Hebrews as In omnes D. Pauli epistolas, atque etia in epistola ad Hebraeos commentaria luculentissima. It was translated into Dutch by Johannes Dyrkinus (ca. 1530-before 1592) and Johannes Florianus (1522-1585) and contains a new preface by Calvin addressed to Simon Grynaeus as well as a dedication to Unico Manninga. "... although Calvin was read and certainly influential in the Netherlands from an early date, surprisingly few of his works were translated into Dutch before 1572" (Pettegree, p. 230). It was printed and published in Emden by Gillis van der Erve and Willem Gailliart. "Emden printing represented possibly the most important, certainly the community's most individual contribution to the shaping of Dutch Protestantism in this period" (Pettegree, p. 87).Some insignificant water stains; rebacked; clasps missing. Although there are some small holes and (especially on the back board) small gouges and cuts in the leather covering the boards, the tooling remains extremely crisp and clear. Good copy of Calvin's commentaries on the Epistles of Saint Paul.l Erichson, p. 31; Pettegree, Emden 161; STCN (7 copies); Typ. Batava 935; USTC 401254; cf. NNBW IV, cols. 547-550 & 604-605.

ACOSTA, José de.
[7], 398, [8] ll.First Dutch edition of "the most convincing, detailed and reliable account of the riches and new things of America" (Streeter), written by the Spanish Jesuit José de Acosta (1539/40-1600) and translated by Jan Huyghen van Linschoten from the original Spanish. The "West Indies" of the title still referred at this date to the New World as a whole, and the book concentrates on the Spanish possessions in Peru and Mexico, covering the Inca and Aztec people, customs, history, botany, zoology, mineral riches, trade, products, and much more. It was this book above all others that opened the eyes of the Dutch, the English and the rest of Europe to the extraordinary wealth Spain was reaping from its possessions in the New World, and it includes practical information such as sailing instructions, accounts of diseases, etc. With a 1645 owner's inscription, library stamps and the armorial bookplate of the Marchese of Bernezzo on the back of the title-page. With some repairs in the first two quires, the title-page rather worn and two leaves somewhat browned, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is scuffed and has cracks in the vellum at the front hinge, but is still good and structurally sound. The most influential early work on America, in its first Dutch edition.l Alden & Landis 598/3; Palau 1992; Sabin 126; cf. Streeter 32 (1604 Eng. ed.).

They were organized by the chamber "De H. It was the first time that the texts of the plays were published immediately after the festival. Der alten Weisenn exempel sprüch, mit vil schönen Beyspilen und Figuren erleüchtet.(Colophon: Strasbourg, printed by Jacob Frölich, 1539). Folio. With half-page woodcut illustration on title-page, further 1 full-page and 112 smaller (ca. 9 x 14 cm) woodcut illustrations in the text (including a small number of repeats), a woodcut royal procession above and woodcut device of a swan playing a viol below the colophon, numerous woodcut pictorial and decorative strips. Modern blind-tooled calf in 16th-century style. [4], CVII ll. Rare early 16th-century German edition of the ancient Sanskrit Panchatantra fables, a classic of the genre, thought to have been assembled ca. 200 BC out of stories from an even older oral tradition. The title means "five books" and the stories became known in Europe through Hebrew translations of Arabic versions under the name Bidpai. Composed as a series of fables in a frame story (sometimes several layers of frame stories), it contains about 140 fables featuring animals as a mirror for human behaviour and was intended to educate people, especially young rulers. With a woodcut illustration on the title-page, representing a Jewish priest behind a board with the names of 12 stones which represent the 12 tribes of Israel. 17th-century gold-tooled red morocco, richly gold-tooled spinel, gold-tooled fillets and small cornerpieces on both boards, gold-tooled board edges and turn-ins. 124, [2] ll. Perhaps the best of the seven 16th-century editions of an influential treatise in verse on the virtues of precious stones, compiled by Marbode of Rennes (1035-1123), archdeacon and schoolmaster at Anjou, later bishop of Rennes. Beside the magical powers of the 60 precious stones treated in this poem, it also lists medicinal qualities, and is hence often seen as a medical treatise. The first printed edition of the text appeared in 1511, edited by the German physician Georg Pictorius (ca. 1500-1569). The present edition was edited by the Dutch humanist Alardus Amstelredamus (1491-1544), who "had a much more complete and correct manuscript than Pictorius so that this edition contains 100 more verses of the original poem" (Schuh). Alardus added extracts from various writers, including Plinius and Dioscorides, and also included Pictorius's commentaries. The preliminaries include two letters from the mysterious Arabian King Evax to Tiberius, annotated by Alardus. With the bookplate of the Prince of Liechtenstein on paste-down. The various sections are designed to teach wisdom, courtesy correct conduct for princes and other virtuous and practical traits. The fables were translated into Greek and Hebrew in the Middle Ages from Arabic versions that were derived from Persian translations of the Sanskrit. Rare writingmaster's calligraphic copper-plate model book, the principal work of the Nuremberg writing master and reckoning master, Johann Neudörffer the elder (1497-1563): one of the finest and most charming writing books of the Renaissance. The writing book shows models of alphabets and writing exercises in various hands, with model alphabets as well as calligraphic letters, deeds and documents, Biblical verses, general educational statements, and proverbs. Nearly all are in German and written in gothic hands, but leaf 46 is in Latin and written in a humanistic cursive, and a few others show some humanistic influences.Neudörffer executed his models right-reading on the prepared copper plates rather than in mirror image. Possibly unrecorded variant of one of the three scarce Antwerp editions published in the same year as the first edition by Joos Lambrecht at Ghent in 1539, of an account of a so-called "Landjuweel", a rhetoricians' festival organized in Ghent in June 1539. They were organized by the chamber "De H. Drievuldicheyt" of Ghent and the 19 participating chambers from different cities each presented a play answering the question: "What is of the most comfort for somebody who is dying?" It was the first time that the texts of the plays were published immediately after the festival. The texts breathe the spirit of the Reformation and the book was banned in 1540.The sequence of the three editions is not certain and the differences are minimal. Charles I of Spain).
[Alcalá de Henares, Juan de Brocar, 1539]. 4to. (8) pp., with full-page title woodcut, a woodcut initial, and a 16 century manuscript devoted to the trade in bread on the blank final page. Marbled wrappers. Extremely rare Spanish royal mandate establishing maximum prices for bread, bales of wheat, and bran in the Kingdoms of Castile, Leon and Toledo. Fines would be levied on those who did not comply with the established prices. This was a "pregón", a text that was publicly read aloud "in town squares and markets and other places [.] by a crier, and before a public scribe or notary" (p. A3v). Bread was a staple food, especially for the impoverished classes, and the mandate was issued in response to unrest that arose when the price of bread became the object of speculation on the part of merchants and intermediaries who artificially raised prices, provoking a rise in the cost of wheat, flour, and other ingredients used in its manufacture. - Light staining; a few old ink underlinings. Almost unobtainably rare: while OCLC records five copies of the folio edition, the present copy of the quarto issue is the only specimen known; even Alexander S. Wilkinson states that he was unable to ascertain a single exemplar in public or private collections (cf. below). The present unique copy is of further interest for the nearly full-page contemporary Spanish note about the bread trade on the blank verso of the final leaf. Palau 235.085. J. M. Abad, La Imprenta de Alcalá de Henares I, 301. Wilkinson, Iberian Books, no. 7330 ("No se conoce ejemplar en actualidad"). Cf. Gil Ayuso, Textos Lega … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tokyo, Japan: Elpis Co. Facsimile. Very good condition. See pictures. 1539 The Great Bible Facsimile with protective green cloth slipcase. Elephant Folio. Limited Edition. Published by Elpis Co & printed in Tokyo, Japan in 1991. Pulpit sized gem in fine tan Moroccan leather with quality paper. Gold gilt titling on spine. 6 raised bands on spine. Marbled end papers. Very heavy, 21 pounds. Size: 12" x 17 1/2" x 4 1/4" thick. See pictures. The Great Bible of 1539 was the first authorised edition of the Bible in English, authorised by King Henry VIII of England to be read aloud in the church services of the Church of England. The Great Bible was prepared by Myles Coverdale, working under commission of Thomas, Lord Cromwell, Secretary to Henry VIII and Vicar General. In 1538, Cromwell directed the clergy to provide "one book of the Bible of the largest volume in English, and the same set up in some convenient place within the said church that ye have care of, whereas your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same and read it." The Great Bible includes much from the Tyndale Bible, with the objectionable features revised. As the Tyndale Bible was incomplete, Coverdale translated the remaining books of the Old Testament and Apocrypha from the Latin Vulgate and German translations, rather than working from the original Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic texts. Although called the Great Bible because of its large size, it is known by several other names as well: the Cromwell Bible, since Thomas Cromwell directed its publication; Whitchurch's Bible after its first English printer; … [Click Below for Full Description]
