Giovanni Battista SCULTORI (Mantova 1503 - 1575)
Bulino, monogrammato in lastra, in alto a sinistra, "IBM" e datato "1539" in alto a destra. Estremamente rara. Engraving, signed with monogram IBM in the upper left and dated 1529 in the upper right. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to platemark, in very good codition. According to Bartsch, this small engraving testifies, like most of the prints engraved by Scultori, the expressive autonomy of the artist. Albricci notes that the fluttering veil recalls Nordic influences, and indeed in 1535 more than a hundred landscapes were purchased in Flanders for the Gonzaga Gallery. Very rare work. Albricci, n. 2, p. 21; Bartsch, XV.377.1; Le Blanc II.293.2; Massari, Incisori Mantovani, n. 3

Georg PENCZ (Norimberga 1550 - 1550)
The triumph of fame; the winged figure of Fame blowing two trumpets standing on two elephants at left; the procession with Roman soldiers leading captives through ancient Roman ruins, including the pyramid of Cestius at far left and the head of Constantine and the large Capitoline foot fragment in le … [Click Below for Full Description]

Richard Taverner
London: Thomas Barthlet, 1539. THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. You may request additional images and information for any leaf. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! VESALIUS, Andreas.
Basel: [Robert Winter, 1539 (colophon)]. First edition, and a truly wonderful copy in a dated contemporary binding, of Vesalius's 'venesection letter,' one of his rarest works, embodying what may be the earliest approach to an area of medicine which may be called scientific in the modern sense. This is a fine copy, complete with the final leaf (the Cushing and Waller copies both lack it); it is almost never found in a contemporary binding as here. This copy is doubly interesting for preserving its original context - that of a 16th-century physician's compendium of texts which attempted to condense and survey the most important elements of contemporary medical knowledge in a single volume: Vesalius' work is here accompanied by two other medical works from the same press, published within a year of Vesalius' Epistola. The letter on venesection "was written for Nicolas Flourens, physician to Charles V, who had queried Vesalius regarding the notes on the azygos vein in Tabulae anatomicae sex [published by Vesalius in 1538]; Flourens wished to know what relation the vein had to the question of bloodletting in cases of pleurisy and pneumonia. Vesalius' letter advocated the new 'classical' method of letting blood near the site of the affliction, a method arousing great controversy among the medical community as it was directly opposed to the traditional 'revulsive' bleeding taught by the Arabic authorities. Although the classical method was derived from a more accurate reading of Hippocrates and Galen ... the importance of Vesalius' defense of it lies in the authority he gave to h … [Click Below for Full Description]

POLIZIANO (Angelo)
Luguduni Apud Seb Grypiaum, 1539. 12mo, 161 x 100 mms., pp. [xx], 699 [670 blank], with the engraved vignette of the printer Sebastian Gryphius on the title-page, contemporary (or near contemporary) panelled calf; front joint cracked but holding, and with a recent "Ex Libris" of Gwenc'hlan Le Scouëzec (1929-2008), Breton writer and scholar, "the fifth Grand Druid of our time" (Wikipedia). The Italian scholar and classicist Angelo Ambrogini (1454-1494), known as Poliziano, was, as Wikipedia puts it, "instrumental in the divergence of Renaissance (or Humanist) Latin from medieval norms and for developments in philology. His nickname, Poliziano, by which he is chiefly identified to the present day, was derived from the Latin name of his birthplace, Montepulciano." Anthony Grafton in Defenders of the Text: The Traditions of Scholarship in an Age of Science, 1450-1800 (1994) writes that "By treating the study of antiquity as completely irrelevant to civic life and by suggesting that in any case only a tiny elite could study the ancient world with adequate rigor, Poliziano departed from the tradition of classical studies in Florence. Earlier Florentine humanists had studied the ancient world in order to become better men and citizens. Poliziano by contrast insisted above all on the need to understand the past in the light of every possibly relevant bit of evidence and to scrap any belief about the past that did not rest on firm documentary foundations. [But] when he set ancient works back into their historical context Poliziano eliminated whatever contemporary relevance they … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOCCACE (Giovanni Boccacio, dit)
(1539) VD 16, B 5814. - Adams B 2141. - BM STC, German Books S. 110. - Fairfax Murray 78.

It was produced by Franciscus II Raphelengius, grandson of Christoffel Plantin and son of one of Europe's first great Hebrew scholars, Plantin's son-in-law Franciscus I Raphelengius (1539-1597), who helped prepare Plantin's magnificent 1572 Polyglot Bible, succeeded to the Leiden branch of Plantin's printing office and became professor of Hebrew at Leiden University. Plantin himself had produced the Dutch Republic's first Hebrew book there in 1585 and Raphelengius produced many more beginning in 1588.With occasional very minor foxing or faint discolouration but otherwise in very good condition. The spine and joints are worn, with superficial cracks, a repair at the head and a small tear at the foot, and the sewing is slightly loose. Giovanni Battista SCULTORI
The manuscript was compiled and translated from Latin in the early 13th century by Elke von Repgow (1180-1233). - The present copy is a very early printing of the book: the first and only edition written by Joannes Gigas (1514-1581), based on the critical editorial work of Benno von Heynitz (1500-1544).
