Zürich, Christph Froschauer 1539/(ca. 1539). 2 works in 2 volumes, (4, portrait, 46) 406, 407-599 p., (6) 93 folia. Later marbled paper bindings, Folio (The bindings are worn, mostly on the spine, the author's portrait in neat facsimile but not including the accompanying text, lacks one page of the prelims of the first work. Wormholes throughout both volumes and an ex-libris bookplate on the front paste-down of Madeleine and René Junod. Evangelical Harmony by Swiss Reformer Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531). Edited by Leo Jud and Kaspar Megander after his death, this being the first edition published in 1539 by Froschauer. The work is divided over two volumes and followed by another Froschauer edition, being Commentaries on the Book of Revelation by former Franciscan and one of the leaders of the Reform in Bern Sebastian Meyer (1465-1545). His Apocalypse commentary, here the first edition, presents a strong anti-papal message throughout that the pope is Antichrist and the papacy is the false church.) [Attributes: First Edition]

Hugues et heritiers d'Aymon de la Porte. 1539 LAW of the Concordat of Bologna Italy Pope Leo X Catholic France Rebuffi Pierre Rebuffi was a 16th-century French jurist who is best known for his commentary on the Concordat of Bologna . The famous Concordat was an agreement made between Francis I of France and Pope Leo X outlining privileges both to the Catholic Church and the French monarchy, most of which pertained to tithes and income collection. Beginning in the 1520s, Rebuffi, along with many other political scholars and churchmen, questioned whether the Concordat actually kept France a Catholic nation during the height of the French Reformation. Der Botanik Theophrasts), galten schon im Altertum - zu Unrecht - als Werk des Aristoteles... Eine nicht von Aristoteles stammende spätere Kompilation ist auch die kleine Schrift über die Tugenden und Laster..." Charles I of Spain).
[Alcalá de Henares, Juan de Brocar, 1539]. 4to. (8) pp., with full-page title woodcut, a woodcut initial, and a 16 century manuscript devoted to the trade in bread on the blank final page. Marbled wrappers. Extremely rare Spanish royal mandate establishing maximum prices for bread, bales of wheat, and bran in the Kingdoms of Castile, Leon and Toledo. Fines would be levied on those who did not comply with the established prices. This was a "pregón", a text that was publicly read aloud "in town squares and markets and other places [.] by a crier, and before a public scribe or notary" (p. A3v). Bread was a staple food, especially for the impoverished classes, and the mandate was issued in response to unrest that arose when the price of bread became the object of speculation on the part of merchants and intermediaries who artificially raised prices, provoking a rise in the cost of wheat, flour, and other ingredients used in its manufacture. - Light staining; a few old ink underlinings. Almost unobtainably rare: while OCLC records five copies of the folio edition, the present copy of the quarto issue is the only specimen known; even Alexander S. Wilkinson states that he was unable to ascertain a single exemplar in public or private collections (cf. below). The present unique copy is of further interest for the nearly full-page contemporary Spanish note about the bread trade on the blank verso of the final leaf. Palau 235.085. J. M. Published by Elpis Co & printed in Tokyo, Japan in 1991. Pulpit sized gem in fine tan Moroccan leather with quality paper. Gold gilt titling on spine. 6 raised bands on spine. Marbled end papers. Very heavy, 21 pounds. Size: 12" x 17 1/2" x 4 1/4" thick. See pictures. The Great Bible of 1539 was the first authorised edition of the Bible in English, authorised by King Henry VIII of England to be read aloud in the church services of the Church of England. The Great Bible was prepared by Myles Coverdale, working under commission of Thomas, Lord Cromwell, Secretary to Henry VIII and Vicar General. In 1538, Cromwell directed the clergy to provide "one book of the Bible of the largest volume in English, and the same set up in some convenient place within the said church that ye have care of, whereas your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same and read it." The Great Bible includes much from the Tyndale Bible, with the objectionable features revised. As the Tyndale Bible was incomplete, Coverdale translated the remaining books of the Old Testament and Apocrypha from the Latin Vulgate and German translations, rather than working from the original Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic texts. Although called the Great Bible because of its large size, it is known by several other names as well: the Cromwell Bible, since Thomas Cromwell directed its publication; Whitchurch's Bible after its first English printer; … [Click Below for Full Description]

Inspired by Euclid's Elements, Schmid seeks to simplify the geometry of Albrecht Dürer's Underweysung (1525) for a less learned and more practically oriented readership. The work is divided into four chapters and begins with a general introduction to geometry. He begins with simple demonstrations before arriving at complicated geometric bodies, ending with a figure with 20 facets. Schmid then developed his text with mo … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARTEMIDORUS Daldianus
1539. Froben's caduceus device on title page and verso of final page in first volume; printer's device on verso of final page of second work, woodcut initials throughout. 8vo (164 x 102mm). 479, [1]pp.; 258, [6]pp. (with additional contemporary woodcut portrait, mounted, of 'Wilhelmus Gratarolus' interleaved between the two works). Later vellum with yapp edges, titles in neat manuscript on spine. The extremely rare first edition of the first Latin translation of Artemidorus' authoritative, and influential treatise on the interpretation of dreams. A figure of enduring importance in the history of thought and the subconscious, second-century divine Artemidorus was deemed an authority by both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. The Latin translation is by the Saxon humanist Janus Cornarius (1500-58). 'The only dream book to survive from Antiquity' (Price), Artemidorus' work is divided into five books. The first two - augmented by the third, a supplement - 'are organized systematically by subject matter, starting with dreams of being born, continuing with the body, public occupations and the gods, to dreams of death' and are dedicated to Cassius Maximus, likely Greek philosopher Maximus of Tyre. The fourth is addressed by the author to his son and provides practical advice on successful dream interpretation, including advice on gaining the upper hand in debates with other dream interpreters; the fifth and final analyses just under 100 dreams, each numbered, said to have come true. Artemidorus engages in philosophical and theological debates about the nature of dreams and their interpr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Battista SCULTORI (Mantova 1503 - 1575)
Bulino, monogrammato in lastra, in alto a sinistra, "IBM" e datato "1539" in alto a destra. Estremamente rara. Engraving, signed with monogram IBM in the upper left and dated 1529 in the upper right. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to platemark, in very good codition. According to Bartsch, this small engraving testifies, like most of the prints engraved by Scultori, the expressive autonomy of the artist. Albricci notes that the fluttering veil recalls Nordic influences, and indeed in 1535 more than a hundred landscapes were purchased in Flanders for the Gonzaga Gallery. Very rare work. Albricci, n. 2, p. 21; Bartsch, XV.377.1; Le Blanc II.293.2; Massari, Incisori Mantovani, n. 3
