        The Ludwig von Beethoven Diamond

One of only three created from locks of Beethovenís hair! From LifeGem.com: ìThe Beethoven locks of hair used for creating these LifeGems have been authenticated and provided exclusively by John Reznikoff of University Archives Ã? The Beethoven LifeGem diamond creation process was completed in 2008 and has since been added to the LifeGem ëchain of fameíÃ?î Beethovenís carbon was collected from the hair, purified into graphite, subjected to heat and pressure in a diamond press, and finally faceted into a LifeGem. The Ludwig von Beethoven LifeGem diamond is a blue .56 carat round brilliant diamond which was the first ever created from the carbon of a celebrity or historical figure. Three diamonds were created partially from 130 mg of carbon extracted from 10 strands of hair from the remains of Beethoven, and partially from added carbon. One of the three diamonds was listed for auction on with a ìBuy It Nowî price of $1 million, with the proceeds to be donated to charity. With a starting bid of $50,000, the diamond was eventually sold for $202,700 after 62 bids on . One of the other two diamonds was given to John Reznikoff, and the third diamond is being kept by LifeGem for the LifeGem "Chain of Fame.î

        RICHARD PRINCE: CANAL ZONE

(PRINCE, RICHARD). Frey, James. RICHARD PRINCE: CANAL ZONE. New York: Gagosian Gallery, 2008. First Edition. Oblong 4to. Illustrated Boards. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. 91pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Graphic Thought Process. Published in conjunction with a 2008 Gagosian Gallery New York exhibition, this elegant hardbound catalogue featuring a textual contribution by James Frey reproduced the first showing of Richard Prince's "Canal Zone" body of work. "Following his burlesque dialogues with the art of De Kooning, Picasso, and Naughty Nurse pulp fiction, Prince has turned to his own biographical roots for inspiration. The Panama Canal Zone, where he was born, was, until 1979, a political exclave of the U.S., part-colonial company enclave and part-socialist government, purportedly dominated by virulent separatist racism. In his characteristic manner, Prince has transformed the former reality of his birthplace into a fictive space: providing an anarchic tropical scenario in which extreme emanations of the (white American male) id, fleshy female pin-ups, Rastafarians with massive dreadlocks, electric guitars, and virile black bodies run riot". A pristine copy still in the publisher's shrinkwrap of this significant publication that was subsequently withdrawn from publication due to legal issues.         The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo [Advance Copy of the First English-Language Edition]

London: Maclehouse/Quercus. (2008). The advance reading copy of the first British edition, and first English language edition, of the first book in Larsson's posthumously-published bestselling Millennium Trilogy. Fine in wrappers. The U.K. edition preceded the U.S. edition and had a much smaller printing, as is usual. The advance reading copy was presumably issued in numbers that comprise a small fraction of the U.K. printing and is the scarcest and earliest English-language issue of this astonishingly well-received novel that we have seen. . First Edition. Softcover.

Lynn argues that the average population group differences in socio-economic position (education levels, earnings, welfare dependency) are due to their average differences in intelligence. Since these differences also translate into fertility patterns, with the lowest IQ populations having more children, the specter of a dysgenic future is raised. Altogether the issues are discussed separately across 13 countries or areas of the world: the United States, Africa, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Latin America, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia.Table of Contents: Africa; Australia; Brazil; Britain; Canada; The Caribbean; Hawaii; Latin America; The Netherlands; New Zealand; Southeast Asia; The United States; Conclusions; Appendix: Intelligence Tests, References, Name Index, and Subject Index."; 8.90 X 5.90 X 0.90 inches; 380 pages .

        Devil May Care

London, UK: Penguin Books in Asscoiation with Bentley Motors., 2008. Book. New. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. A pristine copy of the Bentley Edition described as follows: The special series edition is bound in Bodoniana style cases finished in 'Burnt Oak' leather - sourced from Conceria Pasubia Spa tannery in Italy, which provides the hides for Bentley. The leather casing is then stitched in the iconic Bentley diamond pattern, as found on the radiator grille and the upholstery of modern Bentleys. The stitching is hand applied by one of the best artisan binders in Italy. The Bentley 'Flying B' - the radiator cap of the Bentleys of Bond's time - adorns the front cover and spine. The inside of the casing is trimmed in deep red 'Hotspur' leather - with the striking fluting used on 1950s and 1960s Bentley interior upholstery. Inside the front cover, each edition is individually identified by its unique edition number on a black lacquer machined aluminium plate, produced by Rudd Macnamara, who supply the engine plates for Bentley. The book is printed by Graphicom in Italy - who have used a Munken Print Cream 150gsm paper stock - a high quality FSC uncoated paper appropriate for such an edition. The typography reflects exactly the styling of the Bentley owner's manuals. Each book block is then die-cut with a car-shaped silhouette. Then the pièce-de-résistance - into this die-cut hole is inserted a cast and polished 1:43 scale model of the modified R Type which Bond drove - 'the Locomotive'. The model has been crafted by hand by Bentley's current design team, and reflects all the details Fleming includes in his novels. Compulsion Gallery Ltd have produced just 300 of these models - each one is individually numbered to match each Special Series book. Finally - each book is protected by a custom-made Plexiglass slip-case, which itself will be sealed in protective and numbered wrapping to ensure that this exclusive luxury edition reaches you in perfect condition. . This is #175 of that 300. It is SIGNED by the author to the title page.[Sebastian Faulks, Trinity College Dublin, September 11th 2009]. Vollmann, the prints on Crane&#39;s rag card stock and the Titlepage, Colophon, and Introduction on BFK Rives. Page size: 19- 1/4 x 14-1/2 inches for 3 text pages; 6 platinum prints are on sheets 14 x 11 inches with images 6-1/2 x 4-3/8 inches, 3-1/8 x 4-1/2 inches, 4-5/8 x 3-5/8 inches, 9-3/8 x 7-7/16 inches, 9-7/8 x 7-1/2 inches, and 9-1/2 x 7- 1/2 inches (for images 1-6 respectively), all matted to 20 x 16 inches; 9pp. Bound: loose in custom-made buff "Cotlin" cloth with title printed in brown and original platinum-palladium print 6-3/8 x 4-1/4 inches both onlaid to cover within indents, salmon colored Bugra paper edges of box and lining trays, made by L. J. Dillon. & The Colophon tells the reader / viewer that Ms. Swisher uses an 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 Deardorff camera and mixes her platinum-palladium chemicals with which she coats the Crane&#39;s rag paper. She lays the negative onto the paper coated with this light sensitive solution and prints in the sun light. Using the ammonium system, which depends on humidity, she achieves images of a unique split tonality. The delicacy and luminosity of these platinum-palladium prints suit the subject matter - the artist&#39;s images of her daughters in the garden - perfectly. The text is set in Centaur and printed by Robert Dickover of Stalwart Press. The images are all titled in pencil and the first image - that of a tree - is labeled "Daphne&#39;s Escape." It is an image, curiously resembling the torso of a female - that leads into the images of her daughters - both clothed and nude. Almost other-worldly, they evoke a time when humans were more closely intertwined with the natural world. Mary Swisher is a well-known California photographer and has received two National Endowment of the Arts grants and a California Council for the Arts grant for the project A PHOTOGRAPHY SURVEY OF THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY 1850-1950. She was one of the featured photographers in the book, PRESIDIO GATEWAY, which documents San Francisco&#39;s 218-year-old army post before it became a national park. Her work is widely shown and is in museums and private collections in Europe, the United States and Japan. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10153.jpg >Image.</A><br>

        Damsels & Dragons

[Milwaukee, WI]. 2008. Artist&#39;s book, one of 25 copies, all on one-ply Strathmore paper, each copy hand-numbered and signed by the artist on the titlepage with copyright and date. Page size: 6-1/2 x 6-1/2 inches; 38pp; plus small book (within this larger book) on the 28th page that is 3-3/4 x 5-1/2 inches,10pp; being a laser print copy of Joris Hoefnagel&#39;s 1590 calligraphy book created by Georg Bocksay in 1575, tied with brown silk ribbon. Bound by the artist: accordion style with boards covered in black paper with overall design of damsels and dragonflies in blue and red, housed in matching paper-covered slipcase. DAMSELS & DRAGONS celebrates the nature of and the art that has been inspired by these insects. Ms. Poehlmann has handlettered in ink her text which is taken from various sources as well as identifying the images that have been inspired by these insects. For example, there are pages of a Book of Hours (French Miniaturist) from 1490-1500 at the Pierpont Morgan Library showing a dragonfly on a blue cornflower, Lalique&#39;s pendants, Emile Galle&#39;s vase decorated with a dragonfly, and, of course, Tiffany&#39;s dragonfly lamp. Artists from Picasso (his beautiful dragonfly in HISTOIRE NATURELLE) to Balthasar van der Ast are represented. The images are color copies cut out and collaged on the pages around the hand-lettered text. A very beautiful book celebrating centuries of art inspired by these beautiful creatures. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10165.jpg >Image.</A><br>

The Stones of Mani. Views of the Southern Peloponnese. Two Volumes

Sacramento, CA: Stalwart Press. 2008. Signed limited edition, one of 50 copies, text on Rives Heavyweight paper and each of the 12 platinum-palladium photograph on Crane&#39;s 90-lb. business card stock, with preceding legend for each photograph on Wyndstone vellum, each copy signed and numbered by the author / photographer, Mary Swisher, who has also signed and numbered each of her photographs. Page size: 11-3/4 x 10 inches; text volume 72pp; print volume 24 leaves. Bound by L.J. Dillon: text volume in tan linen over boards with stitched binding in natural linen thread using Greek key design; plate volume is loose as issued housed in tan linen portfolio identical in trim size to text volume, both housed in publisher&#39;s slipcase of same tan linen with blue Hahnemuhle Bugra papers on front and back, title and author in black with cross and lion motifs used also as decorations in the text; same blue Hahnemuhle paper used as endsheets in text volume and to line plate portfolio case. & Mary Swisher has created a most beautiful and enduring homage to that part of the Peloponnesos in Greece known as the Mani. It is the small eastern-most peninsula that lies between the Gulf of Messina and the Gulf of Laconia. Just south of Sparta, that ancient city that figures so predominantly in the mythic origins of western civilization, harboring the island of Kranai where Paris and Helen spent their first night of love, land where the 1829 Greek War of Independence began, the ancient lands of Mani are celebrated in word and image. & Using the technique of platinum-palladium prints, a method of printing photographs perfected in the late 19th century, she has captured the illusive Greek light which so dramatically sets off the permanence of the harsh Greek stony land. The photographs were taken with a 4 x 5 field camera; each negative was contact printed on rag paper and handcoated with platinum-palladium and then exposed to ultraviolet light. The laborious and technically difficult process was not used after World War I as the world&#39;s supply of platinum became unavailable. Re-emerging in the late 20th century, the process is prized for its ability to give a photograph of lustrous depth and archival endurance. It is a technique used to maximum effect in this beautiful book.& Ms. Swisher&#39;s text is printed letterpress in two colors by Robert Dickover of The Stalwart Press, in Garamond, Garamond Italic and Hadriano Stonecut, from handset type. Ornamented with designs in blue by Rachel Stonecipher, who assisted in the design of the book, the text pages highlight the stone carvings found in the 11th century Church of Metamorphosis. Certainly this is a stunning book - of the greatest appeal to anyone with interest in ancient or modern Greece.& Mary Swisher is a well-known California photographer and has received two National Endowment of the Arts grants and a California Council for the Arts grant for the project A PHOTOGRAPHY SURVEY OF THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY 1850-1950. She was one of the featured photographers in the book, PRESIDIO GATEWAY, which documents San Francisco&#39;s 218-year-old army post before it became a national park. Her work is widely shown and is in museums and private collections in Europe, the United States and Japan. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10166.jpg >Image.</A><br>

        Pongmalai Garland

San Francisco, CA: CoTangent Press. 2008. One of 5 copies, 4 of which are for sale, of this gum printed diptych, signed by the artist, William T. Vollmann, on the front cover. Page size: 18-3/8 x 18-1/8 inches; 4pp; including covers. Bound by the artist: paper over boards that has been painted with heavy impasto small white paper label on front right corner reading, "Pongmalai / Garland/ A Bichromate / Diptych / Bangkok 9/11/01 / William T. Vollmann / 1/5 / 2008" and another white paper label on lower right corner reading, "CoTangent" with the press&#39;s device in the artist&#39;s hand, interior heavily painted forming borders within which the two gum prints are mounted, housed in custom-made black cloth clamsh box with black morocco label on spine, stamped in gold gilt with artist&#39;s name and title. The actual images are of female genetalia covered by flower garlands so the subject matter is not immediately discernable. And, while the label dates and places this work as 2001 in Thailand, the printing was accomplished in 2008 in Sacramento. The Gum Bichromate Process ( a contact printing process) is extremely delicate, diffucult, and dangerous - due to the chemicals used in the process. Each color of a seven-color gum print is printed with a different negative and developed with a different pigment, and all must be in register on "sized" paper. Further each layer must be printed two to six times. The final print has a depth of color and shade not achieved with other print-making techniques. William Vollmann has employed the successfully employed this technique resulting in images that are at once mysterious, fragile and beautiful. His decorative painting of the portfolio housing the prints is a perfect complement. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10168.jpg >Image.</A><br>

Ebru Paper with Drawing of Beyazit Tower

(Istanbul): Ebristan, 2008. Original marbled paper art by Turkey&#39;s premier paper marbler, with dusky swirls of pale peach, green, blue, and mauve. Signed and dated by the artist. Emerging from the center of the marbling is a small, detailed drawing in brown ink of the entrance archway to Istanbul University and Beyazit Tower. The tower is located on the university&#39;s campus and was originally built in 1824 as a fire watch-tower. Birds fly overhead and disappear amidst the soft clouds of a marbled sky. Paper marbling, or Ebru, is one of the oldest arts in Turkey. In addition to being employed in book binding and decoration, it was often used as a background for calligraphy and is considered high art. Ever since its fifteenth-century beginnings, artists in Turkey (and around the world) have experimented with marbling in order to create increasingly complex designs, which are works of art in their own right. Measuring 28 by 20 inches. One corner slightly bumped, else a fine example of this traditional art form.

Christopher Wool&#39;s word images are among the most sought after pieces in contemporary art.         Fifty-to-One

Burton, Michigan, U.S.A.: Subterranean 2008 - What an amazing concept! Charles Ardai, founder of Juno, and an amazingly adept mystery writer himself, had the idea to rejuvenate and re-introduce the little pulp novelas that graced newsstand shelves and airport book racks n the 50's and '60s. The covers are noted for their usual depiction of a femme fatale, a tough guy and a weapon or some other form of peril. The artwork is always great and the stories, sometimes yes, sometimes no. Voila! Hard Case Crime was borne out of a labor of love and as an homage to the old pulps. With a combination of re-issued classics and new books written by aspiring and established authors the dream materialized. The books were originally produced and distributed by Dorchester Publishing in combination with Ardai's publishing concern, but financial hardship seemed ready to doom the enterprise after almost seventy books. Fortunately, UK Publisher Titan Books stepped into the breech and resumed cultivation and distribution of new titles. The book listed above is 297 of 500 signed and numbered copies of the Limited Edition hardcover of Fifty-To-One (issue price-$45.00). What I am selling however, is a complete set of the HCC books for $1500.00. This is a combination of the mainly paperback issues, but also the more recent hardcovers that are becoming the norm. It took me two and a half years of scouting in used book and thrift stores to assemble this collection. It can be yours in a single drop-shipping. All hardcovers are absolutely First Edition/First Printings and the paperbacks, from my research, all appear to be as well. Signed books are Fifty To One(hardcover) Twenty Year Death(hardcover)and Getting Off(hardcover). This is a very cool collection for any lovers of mystery and pulp fiction. Additional shipping charges will be required. *****Special Note-This collection does not include one of the Deluxe Limited Edition of 50 signed copies that sell for $750.00. Sorry, but that you will need to pick up on your own if you are so inclined.***** [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Americans

Germany: Steidl/ Washington DC: National Gallery of Art, 2008. First edition of the 50th Anniversary of photographer&#39;s classic work. Oblong quarto. Signed by Robert Frank on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Includes the well- known introduction by Kerouac who wrote of this book, "Robert Frank.he sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world. To Robert Frank I now give this message: You got eyes." He sure does. Jack Kerouac wrote in his preface of The Americans, "Robert Frank&#133; he sucked a sad poem out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world. To Robert Frank I now give this message. You got eyes." Frank&#39;s Américains eventually achieved legendary status as "the most renowned photobook of all&#133; It struck a chord with a whole generation of American photographers&#133; Many memorable photobooks have been derived from this mass of material. None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Frank&#39;s masterpiece" (Parr & Badger I:247). "From the more than 20,000 images that resulted, Frank eventually chose 83 of them and arranged them into four chapters&#133; &#39;With these photographs,&#39; he later wrote, &#39;I have attempted to show a cross-section of the American population. My effort was to express it simply and without confusion. The view is personal&#133;&#39; Such a simple intention for a book that would so alter the course of modern photography" (Roth, 150).
