The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition, with Full Page Sketch of Grani

Harper Collins, London 2009 - Signed by Editor & Illustrator. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, The number 288 of 500 of the UK Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition, published by Harper Collins in 2009, the first publication of a previously unknown work by J.R.R. Tolkien. Copy number 288, edited and signed by his son, Christopher Tolkien, to the Limitation Notice, and has a full page drawing of Grani to the Half Title Page, signed and dated by the Illustrator, Bill Sanderson 5th of May, 2009. The story tells the epic story of the Norse hero Sigurd the dragon slayer, the revenge of his wife, Gudrun, and the Fall of the Niflungs. From the publisher's release statement, "Many years ago, J.R.R. Tolkien composed his own version, now published for the first time, of the great legend of Northern antiquity, in two closely related poems to which he gave the titles The New Lay of the Volsungs and The New Lay of Gudrun. In the Lay of the Volsungs is told the ancestry of the great hero Sigurd, the slayer of Fafnir most celebrated of dragons, whose treasure he took for his own; of his awakening of the Valkyrie Brynhild who slept surrounded by a wall of fire, and of their betrothal; and of his coming to the court of the great princes who were named the Niflungs (or Nibelungs), with whom he entered into blood-brotherhood. In that court there sprang great love but also great hate, brought about by the power of the enchantress, mother of the Niflungs, skilled in the arts of magic, of shape-changing and potions of forgetfulness. In scenes of dramatic intensity, of confusion of identity, thwarted passion, jealousy and bitter strife, the tragedy of Sigurd and Brynhild, of Gunnar the Niflung and Gudrun his sister, mounts to its end in the murder of Sigurd at the hands of his blood-brothers, the suicide of Brynhild, and the despair of Gudrun. In the Lay of Gudrun her fate after the death of Sigurd is told, her marriage against her will to the mighty Atli, ruler of the Huns (the Attila of history), his murder of her brothers the Niflung lords, and her hideous revenge. Deriving his version primarily from his close study of the ancient poetry of Norway and Iceland known as the Poetic Edda (and where no old poetry exists, from the later prose work the Volsunga Saga), J.R.R. Tolkien employed a verse-form of short stanzas whose lines embody in English the exacting alliterative rhythms and the concentrated energy of the poems of the Edda." -- Christopher Tolkien. Features a color frontispiece of a facsimile page from J.R.R. Tolkien's original manuscript. Fully bound in Brown Leather with matching full leather clamshell case, stamped in gold foil with a unique motif of Sigurd's horse, Grani. Printed on superior quality paper and including a silk ribbon marker sewn into the textblock. Matches the recently released UK Signed Limited Numbered Super Deluxe Edition of The Children of Hurin. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. As New / No Jacket, as Issued.         Equus [Number I of X special edition]

Catchmays Court, Llandogo, Monmouthshire: The Old Stile Press, 2009. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Hicks-Jenkins, Clive. Number I of X special edition copies (total edition 210), folio size, 124 pp., one original print, one maquette, both signed by Clive Hicks-Jenkins; laid in signature of Sir Peter Shaffer. Like a Phoenix arising from ashes, the play Equus and, as a derivative, this work, arose out of a horrible crime committed by a 17-year old in England against six horses. As brutal as the original act was, we can garner flashes of insight and, hopefully, wisdom through understanding the motivation behind the act. From the web site of The Old Stile Press: "Equus was first produced on stage in 1973 and in its first published form Peter Shaffer wrote of the dangers of 'flatly setting down on paper what was far from flat on the stage, and listing inexpressively details of the work which, in accumulation, became deeply expressive'. John Dexter directed that first production 'powerfully through suggestion', 'he charges the action of the play with electric life. He is a master of gesture and economy.' More than thirty years later those words could be written about Clive Hicks-Jenkins' imagery which now accompanies the text. He wanted to create his own universe for this new expression of Shaffer's story. 'Meditations and inventions, rather than recollections of past productions' were his aim. This is a long, dramatic text of a dreadful event committed by a highly disturbed young man. The characters endeavor to explore the mental world in which such a deed could be comprehensible but the power of the play is in the extraordinary relationship of the young man and his psychiatrist. Understanding the overwhelming nature of Alan's love of horses becomes the key and the imagery focuses on the struggle between horse and man and emergent sexuality."___DESCRIPTION: Original gray paper covered boards, upper boards with an illustration from the text, lettering to backstrip in gilt, top-edge black, blue endpapers, title page in green and black, text in dark green throughout, monochrome illustrations on almost every page; collage printed from photopolymer plates, Bodoni type, Regency Klassica paper, folio size (12.75" by 9"), [124] pp., limited edition, this number I of I-X of the special edition (there were also 200 regular edition copies), signed by artist on the colophon page and by the playwright on a laid-in slip with an illustration. The book itself is housed in a three-fold portfolio fully illustrated by the artist on both the exterior and the interior, accompanied by a numbered original print and a maquette, both of which are signed by Clive Hicks-Jenkins, also accompanied by an additional monochrome print set against a rust background, this tipped onto a larger cardboard background covered with sand-coloured laid paper, also accompanied by two sheets printed with sixteen component parts for one of the "Equus" maquettes ; all items are housed in a green cloth fall-down-back box with a gilt-stamped grey paper label inlaid to backstrip, lined in blue velvet with a removable divider to store the extra signed print, extra illustration and maquette (both housed individually in blue hand-made paper portfolios).___CONDITION: A fine copy in all aspects, like new.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.         Moby Dick Limited Edition

Folio Society, London 2009 - 2009 First Thus. Fine Hardback. No inscriptions or bookplates. Fine slipcase. Limited Edition of 1,750 numbered copies of which this is number 762. Each copy numbered by hand on a special limitation page. Bound in leather, blocked in white and silver with a design based on one of Rockwell Kent's illustrations. Set in Fournier. 768 pages with approximately 280 black & white illustrations. Size: 9¼" x 6¾" Commentary volume is bound in buckram, 312 pages, 9¼" x 6¾". Both presented in a buckram-bound solander box. Herman Melville's tale of the hunt for the white whale, Moby Dick, is one of the greatest novels of all time. It is at once an adventure story of the high seas, and an exploration of the uncharted regions of the soul. Neglected in Melville's day, Moby-Dick is now acknowledged as a sublime work of the imagination, an American Odyssey. In Ahab, Melville creates a tragic hero on the scale of King Lear or Don Quixote. His single-minded pursuit of the whale is both terrifying and awe-inspiring, as he perverts his commercial venture into one of vengeance on a seemingly invincible foe. The crew of the Pequod, drawn from all corners of the globe, are the human casualties of Ahab's quest: battling the elements and driven onwards by a madman.       Tucson, Arizona: Beta Wehr, 2009. Tucson, Arizona:: Beta Wehr,, 2009.. One-of-a-Kind. 7 x 17"; 12 pages including exterior pages. Mixed media on Polish linen. Found metal objects attached by hand sewing with thread. Gouache. Hand sewn binding. Signed and dated by the artist on the back cover page. Slipped in hand sewn Polish linen envelope with paper clip closure. Signed and dated by the artist on the envelope.. Beata Wehr: "The pages of this elongated book are made out of linen canvas. The format relates to the landscape and linen to the land (as well to my Polish background). As in my other linen books, I used a variety of found metal objects. A group of them is stitched next to each other on the first page, to cover its bottom, creating a landscape of discarded items. The number of items stitched on the following pages is gradually growing, eventually covering the whole last page. The book is a comment on the human urge of producing more and more objects that are periodically discarded to change a part of the land into a gigantic accumulation of garbage."

Some of the pages are more affected than others. Since the paper used for this book is glossy most pages have only become wavy. Some pages have slight loss of print as a result of being stuck together and than peeled apart. The last section of the book (some 20 pages) that summarises Hadid's work has moderate 'bleeding' from the clamshell case at the top. The book's acrylic cover is unaffected. The book''s rear cover shows evidence of water contact as well as the clamshell case. The content of the book is perfectly readable and the high quality pictures can be enjoyed. Nevertheless this collectable book is water damaged, hence our low price. If it was in fine condition we would not sell it for under GBP 2,000 so this is a chance to own one of only 200 copies at a considerable discount. The book  including its case weighs 9kg. Including adequate packaging the total weight will be approximately 11kg. We can ship to anywhere in the world. Please get in touch for a shipping quote to your country.
