        To Bee

Milwaukee, WI. 2008. Artist&#39;s book, one of 25 copies, all on one-ply Strathmore paper, each signed and numbered by the artist, author, binder, JoAnna Poehlmann. Page size: 5 x 5 inches; 36pp. Bound: accordion style with covers of hand-made Japanese paper (flowers and ferns in the paper) wrappers and matching slipcase, yellow satin ribbon and gold seal with bee stamp fastener. The text is taken from various sources all concerning bees, for example: "The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others. St. Chrysostom" and "A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers in one collection trip. Joanne l. Hayes" and "So work the honey bees; Creatures that by a rule in nature teach the art of order to a peopled kingdom. Shakespeare." The images are colored copied and collaged onto each page, sometimes around the text, and include Hiroshige&#39;s "Japanese Chrysanthemums," various postage stamps, a page from "Insectorium Surinamesium," Garzoni&#39;s lovely painting "Three Lemons and a Bumblebee", "Cupid Stung by a Bee" by Albrecht Durer, among others. In each image, there is, of course, the insect that is the subject of the book. At the rear of each book, set into a white box with Mylar cut out which serves as a frame, is a specimen "bombus fervidus" laid into white cotton. & From Mongolia with a bee stamp to a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson to an Avedon photograph, we see the bee&#39;s presence in human intercourse. Declining bee populations is now a world problem as plant life depends on the bee&#39;s activities. Physically an integral part of our world, this little book also shows just how emotionally and aesthetically the bee is to our planet. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

Ani-San, samukaro? Omae samukaro? (Signed Limited Edition)

New York: Zucker Art Books, 2008. First Edition. First Edition. One of 19 numbered copies (this being No. 8), of which only 15 were offered for sale. & & The text is excerpted from "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan" by Lafcadio Hearn (1894), and retells the poignant story of a brother and sister who, unable to pay rent after the death of their parents, are thrown out of their house in the middle of winter without even a blanket. Wrapped in their only remaining belongings, blue kimonos, they huddle together behind their house and become buried in the snow. The spirits of the children haunt the blanket that their landlord stole from them before turning them out of their home. Anyone sleeping under the blanket can still hear the children&#39;s voices calling to each other: "Ani-San, Samukaro?" ("Elder Brother, are you cold?") "Omae Samukaro" ("No, are you cold?"). & & Bound using traditional Japanese techniques and printed on white gampi paper. Nineteen photomicrographs of snow crystals taken by the Starns during several snowstorms illustrate the story. The verso of each image is painted with white acrylic and the front is hand-coated with a stroke of varnish. Material from an antique blue patterned kimono wrappers around the book and fastens together with a red and white ribbon. Each ribbon end has a small paper flag printed with the questions that form the title. Appropriately, the lining of the kimono is threadbare. A unique snowflake photograph accompanies the book, printed on gampi paper, coated in encaustic, and signed by both artists. Each book in this edition features a different photograph. A colophon printed on a single sheet of paper, also signed by both artists, rests beneath the kimono. The book, kimono, colophon, and print are housed together in a hand-crafted bass wood Japanese box measuring 11.75 x 11.75 inches. & & Doug and Mike Starn are identical twins born in New Jersey in 1961. These widely acclaimed artists began collaboratively experimenting with photography at age thirteen and have since expanded into sculpture, installation, video, and painting. The main themes explored in their work involve the relationships between light and dark, past and present, and technology and nature. Images of snowflakes, decaying foliage, ancient statues, old Master paintings, and nocturnal insects haunt many of their pieces. They are represented in museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea, and many others. Their varying interests have led them to collaborate artistically with Russian author Victor Pelevin, American actor Dennis Hopper, NASA scientists and others. In 2008, they created a permanent art installation for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority at the South Ferry Station and have most recently exhibited alongside Diana Kingsley and Richard Pettibon at the Leo Castelli Gallery.

        Mothers and Children

[Sacramento, CA]. 2008. Artist's book, one of 4 copies only, each containing a suite of 10 silver gelatin prints, the prints on doubleweight fiber base Bergger developing out paper, as well as a commentary of about 1000 words, printed on Mohawk Superfine paper, both the photographs and commentary by William T. Vollmann. Each print is signed and numbered in pencil on the reverse by the artist / author. The original text written by the author / artist for this portfolio, is printed letterpress, and signed by him on the Colophon. Page size: 16 x 20-1/8 inches (matted photographs) and 8-1/2 x 11 inches (text and captions) totalling 17pp.which includes the titlepage, 10 gelatin prints, colophon, and five pages of captions housed in envelope on inside back over of clamshell box. The titlepage is hand-lettered by Mr. Vollmann. The colophon / artist's statement plus 5 pages of captions, one for each image, are printed letterpress by David Ward of The Applecart Press, Brunswick, Maine. Bound: loose as issued in custom-made grey cloth clamshell box, with hand painted and lettered label by William Vollmann on the front panel and another label on the spine with the title only in Mr. Vollmann's hand. The box is lined with light and a darker mauve paper, the darker mauve paper forming the envelope on the inside back cover holding the Colophon and Captions. Each of the ten 11 x 14 inch silver gelatin prints is matted to a size of 16 x 20-1/8 inches. The original 35 mm negatives were shot by Mr. Vollmann but commercially developed at various labs in and out of the United States. Mr. Vollmann used Contax T2 cameras to capture the images and made these prints on his Leitz Focomat IC enlarger. The artist / author has provided some cross-references as to images other appearances, if they exist, in his captions. He notes that it never occurred to him to assemble a portfolio on the topic of MOTHERS AND CHILDREN. He adds that when the earliest of these images was taken (2005) the topic would have struck him as "suspect and sentimental. But the gazes of the mothers and children in these images had already haunted me for themselves, and once I finally noticed their commonality, they became something more to me than they already were." Indeed, these images of women and children, representing disparate nationalities and ethnic groups, seem more potent because of the cross-section of humanity represented. They are not sentimental in the least; rather, they are full of dignity. Some appear gentle, some proud and fierce. All have the power to touch the viewer. See an Image.

        Flora and Fauna

Boston. 2008. Deck of cards, one of 20 copies all on magnani pescia paper, each signed and numbered by the artist in the plate.. Size: 3-3/8 x 2-3/8 inches; 54 cards (deck of 52 plus 2 "jokers"); housed in hand-made mahogany box with colophon that is hand-colored dry-point etching by the artist and ornamented with water colored green-leaf vine and 23 caret gold gilt crown, signed and dated and numbered in the plate. The "Jokers" are each a rabbit - and the artist tells us that anyone who has had a vegetable garden will understand this choice. Ms. Davidson tells us her "jumping off point" was the rich history of Transformation Cards, wherein "each of the pip cards has been changed (transformed) by the addition of drawings that include each of the pips as part of the picture. The result can be artistic or humorous." (International Playing Card Society) In this case, Ms. Davidson has achieved both. The pip images are hand-colored dry point etchings with lino cuts in tan and white on the reverse. All images are of the natural world: flowers, insects, birds, weeds, trees and all incorporate the correct number of pips in the correct suit for each card. The Queen of Clubs, for example, is a picture of a queen bee followed by worker bee with a 23c. gold gilt crown at the top of the card. The King of Clubs is a Monarch Butterfly, again with a 23c. gold gilt crown at the top of the card. The Ace of Hearts is a coconut palm with the single heart shown as the coconut nestled in the palm&#39;s green branches. The Eight of Spades is a Dutchman&#39;s Britches stalk with the eight spades as the flowers. The Six of Diamonds shows a hummingbird taking nectar from a flower made of diamonds (5) with the 6th diamond forming the hummingbird&#39;s throat. The "Queen of Hearts" is an apple tree with a red "heart" apple hanging from one of the green branches just above an apple barrel full of red heart apples. All suits of Kings and Queens have 23c. gold gilt crowns at the top; all suits of Jacks have silver colored crowns at the top (aluminum). The delights of the natural world made visible - flowers, trees, birds and insects in colorful and beautifully designed images! <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

APHRODISIAS City & Sculpture in Roman Asia

Book Description: Ertug & Kocabiyik, 2008. Hardcover. Book Condition: Brand New. Dust Jacket Condition: Brand New. 1st Edition. APHRODISIAS City & Sculpture in Roman Asia text by Prof. R.R.R.Smith Julia Lenagham Photographs by Ahmet Ertug. Aphrodisias was a free and autonomous city within the Roman province of Asia, in Western Turkey. It was best known for the sanctuary of its patron goddess, Aphrodite, and for its marble sculptors. The community prospered under the early and middle Roman empire (first-second centuries AD), when it built a complete set of marble buildings that made the town a proper city in ancient eyes. Aphrodisias sheds valuable light on interaction between Greek and Roman identity, the functioning of empire, religious conflict and accommodation, and transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Aphrodisian sculptors are known to have worked abroad on prestigious commissions, for example, at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli. The surviving body of sculpture is rich and varied. There are statues of gods, heroes, emperors, benefactors, philosophers and athletes, as well as mythological groups, decorative figures and ornamental and figured relief sculptures. Many of the key pieces occupy key positions in the history of Roman art. The sculpture of the city is a legacy of unrivalled importance in this field. The archaeology of Aphrodisias gives a fuller, more vivid picture of later classical art in its ancient context than is possible at any other site. The book which is 47.8 by 35 cm. is 240 pages. 175 full-colour plates and plans with drawings give an amazing panorama of the marble city and its sculptures. Printed and hand-bound with exquisite Japanese cloth in Switzerland. Presented in a slipcase.       (PRINCE, RICHARD). Frey, James. RICHARD PRINCE: CANAL ZONE. New York: Gagosian Gallery, 2008. First Edition. Oblong 4to. Illustrated Boards. Artist Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. 91pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Graphic Thought Process. Published in conjunction with a 2008 Gagosian Gallery New York exhibition, this elegant hardbound catalogue featuring a textual contribution by James Frey reproduced the first showing of Richard Prince&#39;s "Canal Zone" body of work. "Following his burlesque dialogues with the art of De Kooning, Picasso, and Naughty Nurse pulp fiction, Prince has turned to his own biographical roots for inspiration. The Panama Canal Zone, where he was born, was, until 1979, a political exclave of the U.S., part-colonial company enclave and part-socialist government, purportedly dominated by virulent separatist racism. In his characteristic manner, Prince has transformed the former reality of his birthplace into a fictive space: providing an anarchic tropical scenario in which extreme emanations of the (white American male) id, fleshy female pin-ups, Rastafarians with massive dreadlocks, electric guitars, and virile black bodies run riot". A most handsome copy of this significant publication that was subsequently withdrawn from publication due to legal issues.       Urbino: La Stamperia d&#39;arte Ca&#39; Virginio, printed by Carla Luminati, 2008. Edition limited to 100 copies, of which this is number 12.. Soft cover. New/Urbino, the small city in Central Italy that once nourished Raphael, is a global center for the art and technique of engraving. Enrico Ricci (b.1925) studied engraving under masters at Urbino&#39;s National School of Art and Design. He joined the faculty not long after graduating and taught there throughout his career. Among his achievements, he invented a technique of impressing gold or copper leaf into the printed image as an integral part of the design. The portfolio offered here includes fresh prints from three unpublished traditional plates Ricci made in 1948, as well as two plates from 2000 incorporating the metallic leaf process. All plates were printed in 2008 by Ricci in the Ca&#39; Virginio print shop in Urbino. A biographical sketch and a poem in prose by Mario Luzi in appreciation of Ricci round out the portfolio. English translations accompany the texts. . 36 cm; [16] text pages, and 5 original aquatints with tissue guards, signed and dated by the artist.         The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

London: MacLehose Press, 2008. Book. The uncorrected proof of Stieg Larsson&#146;s bestselling novel, preceding the first edition in English. Unlike the advance reading copy (which was for wider distribution among reviewers, booksellers etc, and bound in wrappers closely resembling the finished jacket artwork) our uncorrected proof is in plain blue wrappers with white lettering. The difference between an advanced reading copy and an uncorrected proof has become somewhat blurred, but our copy in plain wrappers resembles old-style galley proofs, used in-house for editing and proof reading. It&#146;s unlikely that more than a couple of hundred would have been printed. Near fine.

        Rio Cidade Maravilhosa

Sao Paulo: Vintage Denin, 2008. First Edition. Hardcover.. Near Fine/Near Fine. Folio, Unpaginated (ca 250pp). Green boards in ptotographic dustwrapper. Minor bumps to corners. More images available on request. Very Scarce. Apparently from an edition of 1000 private copies but very rarely offered for sale Terry Richardson&#39;s travelogue and ode to Rio and one of his nicer pieces of work. A documentary feel but it&#39;s pretty obvious who&#39;s behind (and often infront) of the camera. Alot of his trademark sex, nudity (he seems to have an amazing knack for getting rooms full of people to take their clothes off), people having fun and doing daft stuff plus lots of landscape, parties and all that. Very much sums up his style of work, but has an extra twist of realism due to the subjects and locations. Brilliant. A sumptuously produced book.

Let It Go. Poem by E. E. Cummings. Lettered and Interpreted by Elizabeth McKee

2008. Unique artist&#39;s book, on Arches Text Wove paper, signed and dated by the artist, Elizabeth McKee. Page size closed: 8.5 x 11.75 inches; 22pp. including one fold-out. Bound by the artist: hand-sewn into black recycled daphne paper from Bhaktapur, Nepal, with envelope and ivory gros-grain ribbon tie of same paper, collage of various papers on lower right front panel. The colophon (double-page spread) is a collage with the printed text of Cummings&#39; verse, the copyright notice, Acknowledgements, and Artist&#39;s Statement (Colophon) on painted sheets. As with all other pages in the book, these two are irregularly shaped. Ms. McKee notes that this book was the result of a workshop she lead for the Calligraphy Society of Ottawa in October of 2008. Each of the participants in the workshop transferred a text from Writing Systems of the World by Akira Nakanishi to their own piece of Arches. Ms. McKee selected the Vai script, a syllabary from Liberia. Parts of this script are incorporated into the background design. Each sheet was then passed to a neighbor who altered it with sumi or walnut inks and an assortment of tools until the sheet of paper was transformed. Only then was each participant given the task of making that transformed sheet into a book. E. E. Cummings&#39; poem, LET IT GO, is a particularly appropriate selection for these altered sheets. The poet urges the reader "let all go" which, of course, the artist had to do when giving her paper to neighbors to alter. The text is lettered in bold black on collaged and painted pages in tan, black and white with gold gilt and glitter threads. Some of the words are quite legible; others are barely so. The maelstrom created by the background painting and collages, the letters swirling in funnel clouds or other turbulence, combined with the irregularly-shaped pages and the torn bits of paper collages combine to alert the reader / viewer know that something powerful is happening. Letting go, according to Ms. McKee and E. E. Cummings is not easy, but ever so worthwhile.& The text reads: let it go-the smashed word broken open vow or the oath cracked length wise-let it go it was sworn to go let them go-the truthful liars and the false fair friends and the boths and neithers-you must let them go they were born to go let all go-the big small middling tall bigger really the biggest and all things-let all go dear so comes love. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

        For Now

[New York. 2008]. Artist&#39;s book, one of 15 copies, all on Fabriano Tiepolo paper, each copy signed and numbered by the poet / artist / printer, Sarah Plimpton. Page size: 8-3/4 x 11-3/4 inches; 20pp. Bound: loose as issued, in cinnamon- colored wrappers, black label title printed in gold on spine housed in brick-colored cloth custom-made clamshell box, black leather label with title and author in gold gilt on spine, made by Claudia Cohen. Ms. Plimpton&#39;s poem reads, "one eye / drawing circles / with fingers tightened / round like an hour / left / on the paper / for now". The text is set in Dante and printed with the help of Brad Ewing at The Grenfell Press in New York. Each page is an original aquatint on an ochre colored ground with the exception of the middle double page spread with is on a pale moss green ground with deeper green forms. Extremely organic, each page of images surround the word / words, almost devouring them (think Pac-man). The textures achieved in the aquatints belie their two-dimensionality. The plates were made and proofed by the artist at the Manhattan Graphics Center and editioned by Peter Pettengill. Ms. Plimpton&#39;s personal journey with forms and words is captivating. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

Artist's book, one of 6 deluxe copies from a total issue of 106 (100 regular and 6 deluxe), all on Mohawk Options 65 cover made from 100% post consumer content with renewable wind power, each signed and numbered on the colophon by the artist / author, Dorothy Simpson Krause. Page size: 12 x 12 inches; 40pp. Bound by Harcourt Bindery in aubergine Nigerian goatskin with onlay of copper inset 7-7/8 x 7-7/8 inches that has been manipulated by the artist (acid washed with "wrinkles") title blind- stamped in center of copper, gold endpapers, housed in matching gold cloth over boards custom-made clamshell box. Printed on an HP Indigo 5500 Press by Acme Bookbinding that have been manipulated by Ms. Krause with graphite, metallic pigments, gold and silver leaf. The text is mainly taken from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, although a notable page spread is text taken from the Holy Bible, Malachi, Chapter 4, Verses 1-6, "behold the day commeth that shall burn as an oven...". The images themselves are, for the most part, in the hot shades of orange and red as if the earth were in the midst of some ghastly chemical fire. An image of clock superimposed on the female head of a piece of classical statuary, dotted line through the blank eyes, with a backdrop of an aerial map of agricultural fields, makes the message clear without one word. Time is running out for a green earth. The artist's plea for awareness of our role as stewards of the environment is eloquent. Using traditional processes with print-on-demand technology, she has created a beautiful book. See an Image.

Franco Cosimo Panini Modena: Franco Cosimo Panini. 2008. folio, red velvet binding (silver ferrules, clasp strips and coat of arms), clamshell case. 64 pages, 6 plates.. Facsimile with accompanying hardcover commentary. One of 550 copies. The majestic liturgical book known as the Lezionario Farnese, produced in Rome shortly after the mid-sixteenth century for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, represents a high point for the art of illumination. Given its size the work is of monumental proportions and the wealth of embellishments, we may consider the Lectionary a codex of exceptional merit. Splendid embellishments By commissioning this truly sumptuous work, Alessandro Farnese brought into being a codex which, for hundreds of years, served as one of the Missals used by the Popes and princes of the Church during the solemnities held at the Sistine Chapel. In its splendid full-page illuminations and wonderful gilded frames adorned with putti, masks and floral motifs we note the influences of the grand art of the Renaissance and, in particular, the work of Michelangelo and Raphael. A widely acclaimed illuminator With its impressive embellishments, the Lezionario Farnese represents one of the masterpieces of Giulio Clovio (1498-1578), the most widely acclaimed illuminator of the late sixteenth century. Clovio was praised by the Florentine historian, Giorgio Vasari, in the second edition of his Lives of the Artists, as the Michelangelo in little. Vasari cites the Farnese Book of Hours and the Lectionary as the most important of the works of Clovio, who, after leaving his native Croatia in 1516, achieved great renown as an illuminator. The Neo-Gothic binding The original binding went missing with the arrival of Napoleons troops. The codex was then re-bound in 1809-1810 in a red velvet Neo-Gothic cover of considerable beauty and refinement (the work of the London binders, Benjamin II and James Smith). We may note the wrought and gilded silver ferrules and clasps and, on the front cover, the polychrome porcelain coats of arms of the Towneley family, the last owners of this work. Patronage The Lectionary was a commission from Alessandro Farnese (1520-1589), the grandson of Pope Paul III Farnese (who ordained Alessandro as cardinal at the age of fourteen). In the early 1540s, Clovio entered the service of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, considered by historians the most important patron and connoisseur of the arts of mid-sixteenth century Rome. Clovio served the cardinal for the rest of his life, and bequeathed his fine collection of codices and artworks to his patron. The Commentary: The work is accompanied by a book with commentary, edited by Jonathan J. Alexander, with writings by Jonathan J. Alexander, Nicholas Barker, Elena Calvillo and Clive Wainwright. Facsimile with accompanying commentary with clamshell box. .

Ebru Paper with Drawing of Beyazit Tower

Ebristan (Istanbul): Ebristan, 2008. Original marbled paper art by Turkey's premier paper marbler, with dusky swirls of pale peach, green, blue, and mauve. Signed and dated by the artist. Emerging from the center of the marbling is a small, detailed drawing in brown ink of the entrance archway to Istanbul University and Beyazit Tower. The tower is located on the university's campus and was originally built in 1824 as a fire watch-tower. Birds fly overhead and disappear amidst the soft clouds of a marbled sky. Paper marbling, or Ebru, is one of the oldest arts in Turkey. In addition to being employed in book binding and decoration, it was often used as a background for calligraphy and is considered high art. Ever since its fifteenth-century beginnings, artists in Turkey (and around the world) have experimented with marbling in order to create increasingly complex designs, which are works of art in their own right. Measuring 28 by 20 inches. One corner slightly bumped, else a fine example of this traditional art form.
