Damsels & Dragons

[Milwaukee, WI]. 2008. Artist's book, one of 25 copies, all on one-ply Strathmore paper, each copy hand-numbered and signed by the artist on the titlepage with copyright and date. Page size: 6-1/2 x 6-1/2 inches; 38pp; plus small book (within this larger book) on the 28th page that is 3-3/4 x 5-1/2 inches,10pp; being a laser print copy of Joris Hoefnagel's 1590 calligraphy book created by Georg Bocksay in 1575, tied with brown silk ribbon. Bound by the artist: accordion style with boards covered in black paper with overall design of damsels and dragonflies in blue and red, housed in matching paper-covered slipcase. DAMSELS & DRAGONS celebrates the nature of and the art that has been inspired by these insects. Ms. Poehlmann has handlettered in ink her text which is taken from various sources as well as identifying the images that have been inspired by these insects. For example, there are pages of a Book of Hours (French Miniaturist) from 1490-1500 at the Pierpont Morgan Library showing a dragonfly on a blue cornflower, Lalique's pendants, Emile Galle's vase decorated with a dragonfly, and, of course, Tiffany's dragonfly lamp. Artists from Picasso (his beautiful dragonfly in HISTOIRE NATURELLE) to Balthasar van der Ast are represented. The images are color copies cut out and collaged on the pages around the hand-lettered text. A very beautiful book celebrating centuries of art inspired by these beautiful creatures.
See an Image.
The Stones of Mani. Views of the Southern Peloponnese. Two Volumes

Sacramento, CA: Stalwart Press. 2008. Signed limited edition, one of 50 copies, text on Rives Heavyweight paper and each of the 12 platinum-palladium photograph on Crane's 90-lb. business card stock, with preceding legend for each photograph on Wyndstone vellum, each copy signed and numbered by the author / photographer, Mary Swisher, who has also signed and numbered each of her photographs. Page size: 11-3/4 x 10 inches; text volume 72pp; print volume 24 leaves. Bound by L.J. Dillon: text volume in tan linen over boards with stitched binding in natural linen thread using Greek key design; plate volume is loose as issued housed in tan linen portfolio identical in trim size to text volume, both housed in publisher's slipcase of same tan linen with blue Hahnemuhle Bugra papers on front and back, title and author in black with cross and lion motifs used also as decorations in the text; same blue Hahnemuhle paper used as endsheets in text volume and to line plate portfolio case. & Mary Swisher has created a most beautiful and enduring homage to that part of the Peloponnesos in Greece known as the Mani. It is the small eastern-most peninsula that lies between the Gulf of Messina and the Gulf of Laconia. Just south of Sparta, that ancient city that figures so predominantly in the mythic origins of western civilization, harboring the island of Kranai where Paris and Helen spent their first night of love, land where the 1829 Greek War of Independence began, the ancient lands of Mani are celebrated in word and image. & Using the technique of platinum-palladium prints, a method of printing photographs perfected in the late 19th century, she has captured the illusive Greek light which so dramatically sets off the permanence of the harsh Greek stony land. The photographs were taken with a 4 x 5 field camera; each negative was contact printed on rag paper and handcoated with platinum-palladium and then exposed to ultraviolet light. The laborious and technically difficult process was not used after World War I as the world's supply of platinum became unavailable. Re-emerging in the late 20th century, the process is prized for its ability to give a photograph of lustrous depth and archival endurance. It is a technique used to maximum effect in this beautiful book.& Ms. Swisher's text is printed letterpress in two colors by Robert Dickover of The Stalwart Press, in Garamond, Garamond Italic and Hadriano Stonecut, from handset type. Ornamented with designs in blue by Rachel Stonecipher, who assisted in the design of the book, the text pages highlight the stone carvings found in the 11th century Church of Metamorphosis. Certainly this is a stunning book - of the greatest appeal to anyone with interest in ancient or modern Greece.& Mary Swisher is a well-known California photographer and has received two National Endowment of the Arts grants and a California Council for the Arts grant for the project A PHOTOGRAPHY SURVEY OF THE SACRAMENTO VALLEY 1850-1950. She was one of the featured photographers in the book, PRESIDIO GATEWAY, which documents San Francisco's 218-year-old army post before it became a national park. Her work is widely shown and is in museums and private collections in Europe, the United States and Japan.
See an Image.
Pongmalai Garland

San Francisco, CA: CoTangent Press. 2008. One of 5 copies, 4 of which are for sale, of this gum printed diptych, signed by the artist, William T. Vollmann, on the front cover. Page size: 18-3/8 x 18-1/8 inches; 4pp; including covers. Bound by the artist: paper over boards that has been painted with heavy impasto small white paper label on front right corner reading, "Pongmalai / Garland/ A Bichromate / Diptych / Bangkok 9/11/01 / William T. Vollmann / 1/5 / 2008" and another white paper label on lower right corner reading, "CoTangent" with the press's device in the artist's hand, interior heavily painted forming borders within which the two gum prints are mounted, housed in custom-made black cloth clamsh box with black morocco label on spine, stamped in gold gilt with artist's name and title. The actual images are of female genetalia covered by flower garlands so the subject matter is not immediately discernable. And, while the label dates and places this work as 2001 in Thailand, the printing was accomplished in 2008 in Sacramento. The Gum Bichromate Process ( a contact printing process) is extremely delicate, diffucult, and dangerous - due to the chemicals used in the process. Each color of a seven-color gum print is printed with a different negative and developed with a different pigment, and all must be in register on "sized" paper. Further each layer must be printed two to six times. The final print has a depth of color and shade not achieved with other print-making techniques. William Vollmann has employed the successfully employed this technique resulting in images that are at once mysterious, fragile and beautiful. His decorative painting of the portfolio housing the prints is a perfect complement.
See an Image.
Ebru Paper with Drawing of Beyazit Tower

(Istanbul): Ebristan, 2008. Original marbled paper art by Turkey's premier paper marbler, with dusky swirls of pale peach, green, blue, and mauve. Signed and dated by the artist. Emerging from the center of the marbling is a small, detailed drawing in brown ink of the entrance archway to Istanbul University and Beyazit Tower. The tower is located on the university's campus and was originally built in 1824 as a fire watch-tower. Birds fly overhead and disappear amidst the soft clouds of a marbled sky. Paper marbling, or Ebru, is one of the oldest arts in Turkey. In addition to being employed in book binding and decoration, it was often used as a background for calligraphy and is considered high art. Ever since its fifteenth-century beginnings, artists in Turkey (and around the world) have experimented with marbling in order to create increasingly complex designs, which are works of art in their own right. Measuring 28 by 20 inches. One corner slightly bumped, else a fine example of this traditional art form.

Letter D of 26 lettered copies, SIGNED by Christopher Wool and Richard Hell. Christopher Wool's word images are among the most sought after pieces in contemporary art. This collaboration with Richard Hell, one of the originators of punk music, explores the fusion of conceptual poetry and art by pairing words like incest and nicest, slave and salve, anus and stuns, perils and penis, etc. The eye is not quite sure what it sees, which is the point, sport.

Burton, Michigan, U.S.A.: Subterranean 2008 - What an amazing concept! Charles Ardai, founder of Juno, and an amazingly adept mystery writer himself, had the idea to rejuvenate and re-introduce the little pulp novelas that graced newsstand shelves and airport book racks n the 50's and '60s. The covers are noted for their usual depiction of a femme fatale, a tough guy and a weapon or some other form of peril. The artwork is always great and the stories, sometimes yes, sometimes no. Voila! Hard Case Crime was borne out of a labor of love and as an homage to the old pulps. With a combination of re-issued classics and new books written by aspiring and established authors the dream materialized. The books were originally produced and distributed by Dorchester Publishing in combination with Ardai's publishing concern, but financial hardship seemed ready to doom the enterprise after almost seventy books. Fortunately, UK Publisher Titan Books stepped into the breech and resumed cultivation and distribution of new titles. The book listed above is 297 of 500 signed and numbered copies of the Limited Edition hardcover of Fifty-To-One (issue price-$45.00). What I am selling however, is a complete set of the HCC books for $1500.00. This is a combination of the mainly paperback issues, but also the more recent hardcovers that are becoming the norm. It took me two and a half years of scouting in used book and thrift stores to assemble this collection. It can be yours in a single drop-shipping. All hardcovers are absolutely First Edition/First Printings and the paperbacks, from my research, all appear to be as well. Signed books are Fifty To One(hardcover) Twenty Year Death(hardcover)and Getting Off(hardcover). This is a very cool collection for any lovers of mystery and pulp fiction. Additional shipping charges will be required. *****Special Note-This collection does not include one of the Deluxe Limited Edition of 50 signed copies that sell for $750.00. Sorry, but that you will need to pick up on your own if you are so inclined.***** [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Americans

Germany: Steidl/ Washington DC: National Gallery of Art, 2008. First edition of the 50th Anniversary of photographer's classic work. Oblong quarto. Signed by Robert Frank on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Includes the well- known introduction by Kerouac who wrote of this book, "Robert Frank.he sucked a sad poem right out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world. To Robert Frank I now give this message: You got eyes." He sure does. Jack Kerouac wrote in his preface of The Americans, "Robert Frank… he sucked a sad poem out of America onto film, taking rank among the tragic poets of the world. To Robert Frank I now give this message. You got eyes." Frank's Américains eventually achieved legendary status as "the most renowned photobook of all… It struck a chord with a whole generation of American photographers… Many memorable photobooks have been derived from this mass of material. None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Frank's masterpiece" (Parr & Badger I:247). "From the more than 20,000 images that resulted, Frank eventually chose 83 of them and arranged them into four chapters… 'With these photographs,' he later wrote, 'I have attempted to show a cross-section of the American population. My effort was to express it simply and without confusion. The view is personal…' Such a simple intention for a book that would so alter the course of modern photography" (Roth, 150).

Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2008. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2008. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 180 pages. 50th-Anniversary Edition of the photographer's classic. One of the greatest books of the 20th century. While Robert Frank's masterpiece is on every list of the greatest photography books, it transcends the medium and must ultimately be seen as the visual equivalent of Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy In America". The Steidl "Robert Frank Project" First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. An austerely elegant production by Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl: Regular-sized volume format. Black cloth boards with gray titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Robert Frank. Introductory Essay by Jack Kerouac, one of the iconic writer's finest pieces. Original red bellyband wrapped around the DJ. The bellyband is missing in subsequent printings. Printed in tritone on thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to absolutely the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Re-presents Robert Frank's monumental achievement. Working closely with the publisher, Robert Frank chose to retain both the size and format of the 1959 First American Edition (full-page photograph on the right-hand side; caption on the left) prefaced by Kerouac's essay. The book is a labor of love: All of the images have been re-scanned and re-cropped by Frank, and two of them completely changed, an alteration not found in any of the book's previous editions. The resulting images have a freshness, crispness, warmth, and beauty that are superior to previous editions. With very little money (courtesy of the Guggenheim Foundation) and an insatiable visual appetite, Robert Frank travelled throughout the United States between 1955 and 1956. From the thousands of photographs that he took, the eighty-three that he chose for the book are among the greatest photographs anyone has ever taken. The most quoted line from Kerouac's essay is, "After seeing these pictures, you end up finally not knowing anymore whether a jukebox is sadder than a coffin". But his most insightful point is really, "With the agility, mystery, genius, sadness, and strange secrecy of a shadow, Robert Frank photographed scenes that have never been seen before on film" (Jack Kerouac). No, they weren't. And they will never be surpassed. A "must-have" title for Robert Frank completists. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in pen on the title page by Robert Frank. The photographer is notoriously averse to any kind of signing, but he made a very rare public appearance at the National Gallery Washington DC and signed a few books. This title is an instant collectible. This is the only signed copy from that appearance available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Note that the red bellyband is intact (it was issued only with the First Printing). Among the signed copies of "The Americans" available online, not a single one is in fine condition yet command as much as $20, 000. A pristine signed copy of the 1959 First Edition turned up in 2010 and sold at auction for $64, 000. A very rare signed copy thus. 83 tritone plates. Three of Robert Frank's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. Also on verso, label with photographer's data, title and edition number. Product Description: It was no more than eight years after the surrender of the Nazi government when Josef Heinrich Darchinger set out on his photographic journey through the West of a divided Germany. The bombs of World War II had reduced the country's major cities to deserts of rubble. Yet his pictures show scarcely any signs of the downfall of a civilization. Not that the photographer was manipulating the evidence: he simply recorded what he saw. Darchinger's pictures, in color and black-and-white, show a country in a fever of reconstruction. The economic boom was so incredible that the whole world spoke of an economic miracle. The photographs portray a country caught between the opposite poles of technological modernism and cultural restoration, between affluence and penury, between 'German Gemütlichkeit' and the constant threat of the Cold War. They show the winners and losers of the economic miracle, people from all social classes, at home, at work, in their very limited free time and as consumers. But they also show a country that looks, in retrospect, like a film from the middle of the last century. Rare color photographs of the German 'economic miracle.' Limited to 1,000 copies, each numbered and signed by J. H. Darchinger and containing the signed color photograph Reichstag, Berlin, 1958

        Other Lives

Leonia, NJ. 2008. Artist's Book, one of 25 copies, each on marbleized paper over Bristol boards, signed and numbered by the artist / author, Lois Morrison. Page size: 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches; 14pp. Bound: accordion-style with vintage ribbons holding the book together. Three ribbons in multi-stripe - including blue which is the background color of the colophon pages - are inserted between the paper and Bristol boards. The cover is marbleized printed paper over board with title printed in blue; the text reads front to back and then in the reverse. It is printed with a Gocco printer in Garamond Italics in brown at the bottom of each page. The board of each page is cut out to frame a collage (actually 2 collages with board inserted btween them so they appear to "float") on blue paper, the collages of plastic and board colored with pigma micron pens. The drawings of the insects and garments are interpretations of a variety of photographs from multiple sources, altered to fit the spaces. The backgrounds are imaginary landscapes. The text reads, "When we see clothing / shown in natural settings, do we ever think, / or are we even aware of the myriads of insects / that share that setting? / They are living out their short lives / clicking, chewing and whirring; spinning, building or digging. / We hear the loud ones, of course / the crickets, cicadas and locusts, / but the dull, low hum that the others / produce in unison, we miss. / Still, they are invisibly there - / all the time." Another beautiful and provocative book from Lois Morrison celebrating the natural world. See an Image.

        To Bee

Milwaukee, WI. 2008. Artist's book, one of 25 copies, all on one-ply Strathmore paper, each signed and numbered by the artist, author, binder, JoAnna Poehlmann. Page size: 5 x 5 inches; 36pp. Bound: accordion style with covers of hand-made Japanese paper (flowers and ferns in the paper) wrappers and matching slipcase, yellow satin ribbon and gold seal with bee stamp fastener. The text is taken from various sources all concerning bees, for example: "The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others. St. Chrysostom" and "A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers in one collection trip. Joanne l. Hayes" and "So work the honey bees; Creatures that by a rule in nature teach the art of order to a peopled kingdom. Shakespeare." The images are colored copied and collaged onto each page, sometimes around the text, and include Hiroshige's "Japanese Chrysanthemums," various postage stamps, a page from "Insectorium Surinamesium," Garzoni's lovely painting "Three Lemons and a Bumblebee", "Cupid Stung by a Bee" by Albrecht Durer, among others. In each image, there is, of course, the insect that is the subject of the book. At the rear of each book, set into a white box with Mylar cut out which serves as a frame, is a specimen "bombus fervidus" laid into white cotton. & From Mongolia with a bee stamp to a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson to an Avedon photograph, we see the bee's presence in human intercourse. Declining bee populations is now a world problem as plant life depends on the bee's activities. Physically an integral part of our world, this little book also shows just how emotionally and aesthetically the bee is to our planet.
See an Image.
Ani-San, samukaro? Omae samukaro? (Signed Limited Edition)

New York: Zucker Art Books, 2008. First Edition. First Edition. One of 19 numbered copies (this being No. 8), of which only 15 were offered for sale. & & The text is excerpted from "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan" by Lafcadio Hearn (1894), and retells the poignant story of a brother and sister who, unable to pay rent after the death of their parents, are thrown out of their house in the middle of winter without even a blanket. Wrapped in their only remaining belongings, blue kimonos, they huddle together behind their house and become buried in the snow. The spirits of the children haunt the blanket that their landlord stole from them before turning them out of their home. Anyone sleeping under the blanket can still hear the children's voices calling to each other: "Ani-San, Samukaro?" ("Elder Brother, are you cold?") "Omae Samukaro" ("No, are you cold?"). & & Bound using traditional Japanese techniques and printed on white gampi paper. Nineteen photomicrographs of snow crystals taken by the Starns during several snowstorms illustrate the story. The verso of each image is painted with white acrylic and the front is hand-coated with a stroke of varnish. Material from an antique blue patterned kimono wrappers around the book and fastens together with a red and white ribbon. Each ribbon end has a small paper flag printed with the questions that form the title. Appropriately, the lining of the kimono is threadbare. A unique snowflake photograph accompanies the book, printed on gampi paper, coated in encaustic, and signed by both artists. Each book in this edition features a different photograph. A colophon printed on a single sheet of paper, also signed by both artists, rests beneath the kimono. The book, kimono, colophon, and print are housed together in a hand-crafted bass wood Japanese box measuring 11.75 x 11.75 inches. & & Doug and Mike Starn are identical twins born in New Jersey in 1961. These widely acclaimed artists began collaboratively experimenting with photography at age thirteen and have since expanded into sculpture, installation, video, and painting. The main themes explored in their work involve the relationships between light and dark, past and present, and technology and nature. Images of snowflakes, decaying foliage, ancient statues, old Master paintings, and nocturnal insects haunt many of their pieces. They are represented in museums around the world including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in South Korea, and many others. Their varying interests have led them to collaborate artistically with Russian author Victor Pelevin, American actor Dennis Hopper, NASA scientists and others. In 2008, they created a permanent art installation for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority at the South Ferry Station and have most recently exhibited alongside Diana Kingsley and Richard Pettibon at the Leo Castelli Gallery.

[Sacramento, CA]. 2008. Artist's book, one of 4 copies only, each containing a suite of 10 silver gelatin prints, the prints on doubleweight fiber base Bergger developing out paper, as well as a commentary of about 1000 words, printed on Mohawk Superfine paper, both the photographs and commentary by William T. Vollmann. Each print is signed and numbered in pencil on the reverse by the artist / author. The original text written by the author / artist for this portfolio, is printed letterpress, and signed by him on the Colophon. Page size: 16 x 20-1/8 inches (matted photographs) and 8-1/2 x 11 inches (text and captions) totalling 17pp.which includes the titlepage, 10 gelatin prints, colophon, and five pages of captions housed in envelope on inside back over of clamshell box. The titlepage is hand-lettered by Mr. Vollmann. The colophon / artist's statement plus 5 pages of captions, one for each image, are printed letterpress by David Ward of The Applecart Press, Brunswick, Maine. Bound: loose as issued in custom-made grey cloth clamshell box, with hand painted and lettered label by William Vollmann on the front panel and another label on the spine with the title only in Mr. Vollmann's hand. The box is lined with light and a darker mauve paper, the darker mauve paper forming the envelope on the inside back cover holding the Colophon and Captions. Each of the ten 11 x 14 inch silver gelatin prints is matted to a size of 16 x 20-1/8 inches. The original 35 mm negatives were shot by Mr. Vollmann but commercially developed at various labs in and out of the United States. Mr. Vollmann used Contax T2 cameras to capture the images and made these prints on his Leitz Focomat IC enlarger. The artist / author has provided some cross-references as to images other appearances, if they exist, in his captions. He notes that it never occurred to him to assemble a portfolio on the topic of MOTHERS AND CHILDREN. He adds that when the earliest of these images was taken (2005) the topic would have struck him as "suspect and sentimental. But the gazes of the mothers and children in these images had already haunted me for themselves, and once I finally noticed their commonality, they became something more to me than they already were." Indeed, these images of women and children, representing disparate nationalities and ethnic groups, seem more potent because of the cross-section of humanity represented. They are not sentimental in the least; rather, they are full of dignity. Some appear gentle, some proud and fierce. All have the power to touch the viewer. See an Image.
