Zero: Cypher of Infinity. Texts by Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Rainer Maria Rilke, Wassily Kandinsky, Gregory Orr, Isaac Newton, Charles Seife, Victoria Finlay, and Lucretius

Vashon Island, WA. 2014. Artist&#39;s book, one of a series of 50, each copy with variations, all on Arches Text Wove and BFK papers, with occasional Japanese paper interleaves, signed and dated by the artist, Suzanne Moore. In addition, there is projected a deluxe edition limited to the first 5 with additional hand-lettered pages, to be priced at. Page size: 11-1/4 x 15- 1/4 inches; 35pp. Bound by the artist: custom-dyed black Cave Paper, tooled in gold and silver gilt arabesques, almost forming circles with lines and circles radiating out from center, housed in custom-made black cloth over boards, felt-lined clamshell box with grey paper label printed in black with the title and artist&#39;s name, highlighted with red and gold gilt circles by the artist. & The book is accomplished is a variety of mediums: original painting and drawing as well as silkscreen prints, with texts in wood and metal types (from the types of the Springtide Press) and polymer plate letterpress printing, embossing, and gold foil and 23k gold leaf, all by noted artist and calligrapher, Suzanne Moore. Ms. Moore collaborated on the letterpress printing with Jessica Spring of Springtide Press. While the book is an edition, the amount of hand work makes each copy slightly different. The reader / viewer is taken on a heady ride of visual images and words that are in the traditional linear format of a book: turn the page and move forward. However, the repetition of circles on each page, either as "zero" in various shapes and sizes printed in black, or as they appear in the painted images as giant circular swirls in a myriad of colors, or multiple combinations of text and image forming intriguing and provocative images, leads the reader / viewer around to zero, subverting or enhancing or furthering the linear concept of the book (reader&#39;s choice!). As an example of the complexity of this intriguing book, the opening text page spread is a series of zeros and printed text (by Moore and Denis Guedj) on a white ground. Ten pages later, the same design of zeros and text blocks (text now by Gregory Orr and Moore) is on a black ground. Of course, it looks completely different than the same art and printed text on the white ground - or does it? Coming full circle indeed!& Suzanne Moore started investigating the complex history of the simple digit, "0" in two earlier commissioned artist&#39;s books, ZERO, FACES OF THE VOID (2007), and ZERO: CYPHER OF INFINITY (2009). In this edition book, she investigates concepts and controversy around Zero. She has incorporated texts by Denis Guedj, Charles Seife, the A. E. Stallings translation of Lucretius, Sir Isaac Newton, Victoria Finlay, Gregory Orr, Wassily Kandinsky, Rainer Maria Rilke, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Emily Dickinson. She ties this seemingly disparate group of authors / scientists together with her own words, pointing out the alarmingly limitless possibilities of Zero. These texts present questions that explore the complex history and eternal mystery of the void taken from science, philosophy, calculation, and symbology all interpreted through art and text. A most beautiful book! <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10101.jpg >Image.</A><br>

Hermann Hesse Bibliographie. 5 Bände., Sekundärliteratur 1899-2007. Geleitwort Volker Michels.

London/Wales (Signed by Robert Frank)

Gottingen : Steidl, , 2007. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is a rare signed edition of Robert Frank\'s \"London/Wales\" published by Steidl, Gottingen in 2007 as part of The Robert Frank Project. From the publisher: \"\'War is over; the heroic French population reaffirms superiority. Love, Paris, and Flowers but London was black, white, and gray, the elegance, the style, all present in front of always changing fog. Then I met a man from Wales talking about the Miners and I had read How Green Was My Valley. This became my only try to make a \'Story\'.\' -Robert Frank. This magnificent new edition of London/Wales, which features never-before-seen photographs, juxtaposes Frank\'s images of the elegant world of London money with the grimy working-class world of postwar Wales-bankers opposite coal miners. It brings together two distinct bodies of work, and reveals a significant documentary precedent for The Americans. It also offers an important view of Frank\'s development, demonstrating an early interest in social commentary, in the narrative potential of photographic sequencing, and innovative use of the expressionistic qualities of the medium.\" Containing 70 tritone photographs and measuring approximately 9.75 x 8 inches, the book is a hardcover with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The condition of the book is FINE in a FINE- dust jacket with a very minor tear near the top right and minor soiling. The book has been signed by Robert Frank on the half title page with an inscription. As mentioned earlier, a Letter of Provenance provided by the person to whom the book was inscribed will accompany the book.

A Closer Look. Original Manuscript and Art

[Boston, MA]. 2007. Complete archive of original art, each board is hand collaged of various papers, including Moriki red and grey papers and pastepapers for the hummingbird&#39;s wings and tail feathers, Kozo papers which have been dyed in diluted red acrylic baths and then collaged as flower petals, among other papers; 16 story boards, each signed and numbered by the artist / author, Mary McCarthy, which served as manuscript for her children&#39;s book, A CLOSER LOOK published by Greenwillow Books / HarperCollins Publishers (2007). This title was awarded the Baker&#39;s Dozen Award from the Pennsylvania Center for the Book (Penn State) as well as being cited in 2007 by the New York Public Library in their 100 Books for Children exhibition. One of these original pieces of art was exhibited in the show at the New York Public Library and another in the Illustration Museum in New York. Page size: 21 x 12 inches; 16 pieces of original art, all but one mounted on board, which the publisher photographed for the pages of this charming children&#39;s book. The text reads, "Look! / What do you... / see? / A bug. / Look / What do you... / see? / A flower. / Look... / What do you... / see?" with a final page describing ladybugs, cardinal flowers, and hummingbirds, images of which are featured in the previous pages of the book. The text Is supplied - with the line breaks and type size. Housed in red cloth fall-back box with tie-button closures. The artist / author has used three simple elements - ladybugs, cardinal flowers, and hummingbirds - to introduce pre-schoolers to the first step in the scientific method: observation. By magnifying the back of a ladybug and then increasing the distance from the viewer a simple abstraction of a black circle on a red ground becomes a living creature. Original manuscript art for a noted children&#39;s book (still in print) is uncommon, and this is also very beautiful. Together with a copy of the trade book.

        Cook, the Discoverer (deluxe edition)

Sydney: Hordern House and the Australian National Maritime Museum, 2007. Quarto (248 x 212 mm), 276 pages, two illustrations, numbered and signed by Dr Nigel Erskine; bound in tan kangaroo leather and housed in a specially designed cloth slipcase by Wayne Stock. The deluxe issue. Deluxe issue of the first English edition of one of the earliest and best biographies of Captain James Cook, limited to just fifty copies. This work includes a 106-page exact facsimile of the rare original German printing of 1787, followed by a newly-commissioned 116-page English translation. Although the relationship between the Forsters and the British establishment soured on their return in 1775, Georg continued to show the utmost admiration for his former captain&#39;s resolve and skill as an explorer. Over the following decade he published many books on voyages and the Pacific, and was already considered an expert when he was commissioned by the Berlin publishers Haude & Spener to translate the official third voyage account into German, to be accompanied by a new introduction and memoir of Cook (see catalogue no. XXX). Richly detailed, the essay combines personal memoir with a carefully argued appraisal of Cook&#39;s unique contribution to scientific discovery on all three voyages: Forster always believed that the essay finally did justice to the memory of the great discoverer, drawing from his personal experience of sailing on the great second voyage. With an introductory essay by Dr Nigel Erskine, Curator of Discovery at the Australian National Maritime Museum.

Page size: 11-1/4 x 15- 1/4 inches; 35pp. Bound by the artist: custom-dyed black Cave Paper, tooled in gold and silver gilt arabesques, almost forming circles with lines and circles radiating out from center, housed in custom-made black cloth over boards, felt-lined clamshell box with grey paper label printed in black with the title and artist's name, highlighted with red and gold gilt circles by the artist. &#11;The book is accomplished is a variety of mediums: original painting and drawing as well as silkscreen prints, with texts in wood and metal types (from the types of the Springtide Press) and polymer plate letterpress printing, embossing, and gold foil and 23k gold leaf, all by noted artist and calligrapher, Suzanne Moore. However, the repetition of circles on each page, either as "zero" in various shapes and sizes printed in black, or as they appear in the painted images as giant circular swirls in a myriad of colors, or multiple combinations of text and image forming intriguing and provocative images, leads the reader / viewer around to zero, subverting or enhancing or furthering the linear concept of the book (reader's choice!).         GOD IS NOT GREAT: HOW RELIGION POISONS EVERYTHING

New York City, NY: Twelve Press, 2007. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Twelve Press, 2007. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 307 pages. The author&#39;s account on subject. One of the greatest books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a regular first print run that sold out immediately after publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Christopher Hitchens&#39; sustained and erudite attack on religion. While it has inevitably been compared to much narrower accounts by Richard Dawkins ("The God Delusion", which is grounded in science) and Sam Harris ("Letter To A Christian Nation", which is grounded in the Founding Fathers&#39; vision of a secular state), Hitchens&#39; polemic is the fullest argument against religion on the basis of reason. Its greatest strength is that it is not written in coldly analytical language (of which Hitchens is a master), but in palpable outrage and anger. The book is an eloquent plea for critical thinking, "Public Enemy Number One" of all religions. At the same time, Hitchens&#39; ultimate goal is the liberation of the human soul. As strange as it may sound, Hitchens believes in the soul, and in holiness, just not in the institutional, monotheistic kind. This is something that he shares with (and owes to) Continental philosophy rather than to the Anglo-American empiricist tradition to which he belongs. The transcendent greatness of a thinker like the Jewish-French Emmanuel Levinas lies precisely in his serious exploration of an "ethics beyond ethics" and a "holiness beyond The Holy Land". There is no God in Levinas&#39; phenomenological (and profoundly spiritual) philosophy either any more than there is in Hitchens&#39; empirical atheism. "God did not make us. We made God" (Christopher Hitchens). Christopher Hitchens died of esophageal cancer on December 15, 2011, an irreplaceable loss to contemporary culture. An absolute "must-have" title for Christopher Hitchens collectors. <b><i> This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Christopher Hitchens. He also crossed out his printed name. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a great book. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. It is, quite simply, the single most beautiful signed copy we have ever seen. Almost all other copies available online are subsequent printings or have major flaws. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> One of the greatest writer/intellectuals of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0446579807.

        An Indian Train Journey.

Higginbothams Press, Sydney, Australia 2007 - Artist's book, one of 6 copies only, each hand numbered and signed by the author / artist, Peter Kingston, all prints on Japanese Iwaki Mulberry Paper which are mounted on French RBK Rives paper. Page size: 13-7/8 x 14 inches; 28pp; including title page and colophon. Bound: loose as issued in original wrappers that are an original linoleum cut by the artist showing the Indian train steaming around a bend, the train outlined in white on a deep red ground, housed in artist-made pine box with original linoleum print of the title page on the lid of the box. Each of the 28 pages is an original linoleum cut, printed in color by Peter Kingston who has signed and numbered each print. The text is part of the lino cut. Each lino cut is mounted on the Rives paper. The text begins, "This is the story of a pilgrimage to South India to ride on the legendary Nilgiri Mountain Steam Railway to witness how its survived for over a century in a progress mad world." And, with that sentence, we are swept away with Mr. Kingston's fabulous images, in a palette of lime green and pink, mauve and blue, Van Gogh yellow and bottle green - night blacks and blues - all bringing a sense of luxurious immediacy to the reader / viewer. By the time the train reaches Runnymede Station (page 16) and a "mob of monkeys invaded our carriage," we are treated to a lino cut of monkeys and passengers in the small wooden coach. The reader is as astonished as the passengers and monkeys! There are many images of locomotives, front and side views, with puffs of steam. A herd of elephants awaits the travelers and the reader at the next stop - resulting in a wonderful image of an elephant on the train tracks next to the small blue wood train. The Pondicherry Station Master's mirror, in which he sees himself, with the legends "Be Alert / Am I Smart," produces another stunning image. It is followed by a small, smiling blue locomotive with the text, "Time is an artist and as long as people continue to seek out the romantic, the wee train will continue to enchant generations of travellers." Peter Kingston, well-known Australian artist, has created a most beautiful book. He takes us on a remarkable journey, sweeping us up in his text and stunning lino cuts, seducing us with color and wit. This is a journey full of romance and humor, an appreciation of a vanishing world, that we can all take with Mr. Kingston and we are the better for it. Every detail of the book - from the paper to the pine box, from the colors of the lino cuts to the composition of the cuts themselves - serves the artist's concept as stated in the opening lines. Take this journey - it is a splendid one! See an Image. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Mont-Saint-Michel (Unique Portfolio of 14 Signed Free Standing Platinum Prints)

South Dennis, Massachusetts: 21st Editions , 2007. No Binding. As New. In 2007, renowned fine press photography book publisher 21ST Editions released Mont-Saint-Michel by Michael Kenna. This oversized handmade book, in an edition of only 60 copies worldwide, featured 14 bound original platinum prints and one free standing platinum print by Michael Kenna. Each of these bound platinum prints were signed in pencil by Michael Kenna. For the publication, Lance Speer, 21ST Editions Contributing Editor and Director of Marketing, wrote an original essay entitled \"Memory as Muse: Michael Kenna at Mont-Saint-Michel\" that appeared in all copies of 21ST Editions\' Mont-Saint-Michel. The book went on to win the prestigious Independent Publisher (IPPY) Book Award Silver Medal in 2008 for \"Best Book Arts Craftsmanship\". In December of 2010, 21st Editions publisher Steven Albahari gave Lance Speer, then the Director of Marketing and a senior member of the 21ST Editions staff, a portfolio of 14 free-standing platinum prints from the Mont-Saint Michel book project. Each unmounted flush-trimmed platinum print measures 9 x 9 inches, is signed by Michael Kenna in pencil on print verso, and is inscribed (verso) with \"21ST Editions reference print for author, Lance Speer, 2007\" by Steven Albahari (21ST Editions publisher). Each unmounted platinum print is housed in a presentation folder with backing and archival interleaving tissue and is housed in a 21ST Editions embossed clamshell portfolio case. This platinum print portfolio was not part of any version of the Mont-Saint-Michel book, as it was created and was reserved for \"in-house\" use by publisher Steven Albahari. To Speer\'s knowledge, there are only 2 such sets in existence - Speer\'s set and one currently owned by Steven Albahari. All 14 of the original signed platinum prints are in perfect, unused and unmounted condition as is the accompanying 21ST Editions portfolio case. A Letter of Provenance from Lance Speer will accompany the portfolio.

Aux Etats-Unis d'Amerique. Gravure en maniere noire de Judith Rothchild

[Octon France]: Verdigris Press. 2007. One of 40 copies, from a total edition of 45, all on Rives BFK for the text and Hahnemuhle for the double page fold-out mezzotint, each signed and numbered by the artist, Judith Rothchild. Page size: 7-7/8 x 4-5/8 inches; 14pp. Bound by the printer, Mark Lintott, leporello style with brown marbled paper over boards and black clot showing at spine and edges, title and author in black on spine and front panel, interior guards with tan marbled paper over boards, opening with the French text on the left and the English translation on the right, the double page mezzotint unfolds across the middle, housed in publisher's slipcase. This is Victor Hugo's impassioned plea to the American public to rescind the condemnation to death by hanging of John Brown on December 16, 1859. It is addressed to the Editor of the "London News," but is clearly directed to the American people. He refers to the American Republic as the sister of the French Republic and urges her to follow universal moral law and save John Brown. The mezzotint is of a man's feet, obviously from a hanging body, in chains. See an Image.

ZUCKERMAN BOUND: THE GHOST WRITER, ZUCKERMAN UNBOUND, THE ANATOMY LESSON, THE PRAGUE ORGY

New York City, NY: The Library Of America, 2007. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: The Library Of America, 2007. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 645 pages. Volume Four of The Library of America&#39;s definitive Collected Works of Philip Roth. The First Slipcased Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a Slipcased Edition for distribution to libraries and LOA subscribers only. None of the copies were sold to the public. The Slipcased Edition has the same ISBN as the regular trade edition. The Slipcased Edition is now rare. Philip Roth is only the third living American writer to be so honored by The Library of America. Published in chronological order, the entire oeuvre consists of nine volumes in all and will surely be regarded as one of the "high spots" in The Library of America Series. Printed to absolutely the highest standards on acid-free paper, utilizing sewn binding, closely woven rayon cloth boards, satin bound-in ribbon marker, and a page layout that is both readable and elegant, each volume is guaranteed to last for several generations of readers and collectors (despite frequent and regular use, the estimated life span of Library of America Editions is 1000 years; un-used, they will last forever) . Without DJ, as issued. The fourth volume presents "the trilogy and epilogue that constitute Roth&#39;s wholly original investigation into the unforeseen consequences of art, mainly in libertarian America, and then, by contrast, in Soviet-suppressed Eastern Europe, during the latter half of the twentieth century" (Publisher&#39;s blurb) . The present volume marks the inclusion and very first publication of his adaptation of "The Prague Orgy" for American television, which features characters and scenes that are not found in the novella. Nathan Zuckerman appears (as a wry writer/observer rather than omniscient genius/conscience) in three more major novels. "Exit Ghost" was published in the same month as the present volume, echoes the first novel, "The Ghost Writer", and is Zuckerman&#39;s eighth, and final, appearance in the Roth-ian universe. Zuckerman takes center stage for the last time, in one of the most important literary novels of the year 2007. "One knows when one is reading something that will permanently enter the culture" (Cynthia Ozick) . "Our foremost novelist since Faulkner" (Harold Bloom) . Philip Roth famously announced in 2012 that he has permanently stopped writing. Volume Eight and Volume Nine appeared in late-February 2013 and complete the Series. An absolute "must-have" edition for Philip Roth collectors. <B><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Philip Roth. The First Slipcased Edition was distributed to libraries and LOA subscribers only. None of the copies were sold to the public. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First "Library of America" Slipcased Edition/First Printing available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Roth has not made public appearances or done signings in a very long time so signed copies of The Collected Works are now highly collectible. A very rare signed copy thus. </b></i> Six of Philip Roth&#39;s novels were selected as among the Top 20 works of American fiction of the last 25 years: "American Pastoral", "The Counterlife", "Operation Shylock", "Sabbath&#39;s Theater", "The Human Stain", and "The Plot Against America". One of the greatest living writers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PHILIP ROTH TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1931082960.

One of 124 bound thus, of 140 copies; this is copy "100, Henry Morris' Copy," It cotains three leaves rather than one including the ornamental original title page and normal title page from the 1589 book. The original leaves included are taken from the 1589 Paris edition of the Alciato emblem book. From the prospectus: "During the late Renaissance, the most famous professor of law in all of Europe was Andrea Alciato (1492-1550) of Milan. .Almost accidentally, he was responsible for creating a whole new genre of publication consisting of text and image, known as the emblem book. Alciato's emblems were built upon the Latin epigrams he liked to write as a learned pastime. .Surprisingly, however, there are few books in English devoted to Alciato or to his emblems. No separate overview of Alciato's life and writing is known. In addition to the history of the emblem books, the author provides much personal information that illuminates the character and personality of Alciato. Alvan Bergman has written an illustrated text on the subject usually directed to scholarly specialist, but he has done so in a way that is engaging and informative to the non-specialist reader. " The eight contemporary emblems are illustrated by Wesley Bates's wood engravings are included as an Appendix. quarter morocco, Japanese cloth sides, cloth slipcase, leather spine label, paper label bearing emblem on top board [Attributes: Hard Cover]
