PORTRAITS: One hundred and sixty-one portraits of friends, family, artists, architects, writers, poets, and composers engraved on wood & Resingrave by Barry Moser from 1970 to 2006 and collected here for the first time

Pennyroyal Press, North Hatfield, Massachusetts 2006 - Portraits have been a staple of Barry Moser's work since his first book, The Red Rag, was published in 1970. Most of the portraits were commissioned by trade publishers, university presses, other private presses, and organizations such as the Dickens Society. For this collection Moser reprinted many of his engraved portraits, some for the second or third time, and engraved twenty-five new ones especially for this portfolio, including portraits of Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austen, and Whitman. Each portait is printed on a sheet that measures 9.5 x 12.5 inches. Every print is signed by the artist. An index is also included with numerical and alphabetical keys to the portraits. The text is printed on 80 pound Mohawk Superfine, a domestic, archival sheet. The individual portraits are printed on 70 pound natural Classic Crest, another domestic, archival paper. The sheets are gathered and laid into a simple gold-stamped, black chemise, which is then laid into a handsome, carefully tailored, fall-back case made of the same black fabric that is also stamped in gold. Ann Patchett, the acclaimed novelist, contributed an essay, "Learning to Look Again," about Moser's portraits and the issue of portraiture in general. Moser also contributed an essay about portraiture that appears as an afterword entitled "Shreds and Patches." The typography was designed by Vance Studley, who set the type and printed the text and the portraits at his letterpress studio in Pasadena, California. The printing took place over a period of four years. Of the sixty copies of this portfolio printed, only twenty copies are for sale. This copy is numbered 52 and is signed by Moser, Patchett, and Studley on the colophon. The prospectus is laid in. A fine example, offered at the original list price.          The View From Castle Rock

Toronto, Canada: McClelland & Stewart(2006). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 360 pages. The author's twelfth collection of short stories. One of Alice Munro's greatest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Alice Munro's "The View From Castle Rock". Her twelfth collection of short stories. It is one of her most beloved books, for "sentimental" reasons, justifiably so: Twelve is a Chekhovian achievement in terms of sheer quantity and quality, which are one and the same thing in Munro's case. Its publication prompted Munro to announce, prematurely, the end of her writing career, showing how with the greatest writers, fiction is profoundly intuitive, guided by impulse and dictated by the unconscious. Even if she did not know it at the time, she had two more (great) books to go. The back DJ flap sums up Munro's career and achievement by (almost diffidently) stating that "she has been mentioned as a potential winner of the Nobel Prize". Not anymore: "A stunningly precise writer who is often able to say more in 30 pages than an ordinary novelist is capable of in 300. Munro writes about what are usually called ordinary people, but her intelligence, compassion, and astonishing power of perception enable her to give their lives a remarkable dignity, indeed redemption, since she shows how much of The Extraordinary can fit into that jam-packed emptiness called The Ordinary" (Nobel Prize Citation). An absolute "must-have" title for Alice Munro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Alice Munro. She signed on top of the page, making her signature even more prominent. Throughout her long career, Munro made very few public appearances, and is a reluctant signer at best. As such, most of her books are signed on a bookplate, which are much less desirable than copies signed on either the title page or tipped-in page. This title is a classic. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Its value will not only keep but increase over time. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ALICE MUNRO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0771065264.

20th Century Boy. Original Photographs of Marc Bolan

Brighton: [Self-published], 2006. SIGNED by the photographer. From Ian Dickson's 'Collector's Series'; a range of handmade box sets, each title containing seven hand-printed images in signed mounts; offered in Standard, Digital or DeLuxe (best) edition. '20th Century Boy' comprises six silver gelatine prints and one colour digital print of Glam-Rock legend Marc Bolan live on stage; this is the superior De Luxe edition which uses fibre-based prints (instead of resin-coated), in hinged archival mounts (instead of standard mounts). Each print is signed by the photographer on the mount. This is copy no.4 of an unspecified edition number (perhaps fewer than 10 examples), the series now having been discontinued by the publisher due to production costs and time constraints. The mounted photographs are contained in archival quality polyester sleeves with a frame dimension of 11 x 14 inches. Housed in an illustrated clamshell box, hand-made by Dickson, with a numbered certificate affixed to the underside of the lid. The highly individual cover art is by famed cartoonist/illustrator Ray Lowry and a short but entertaining biography of the photographer 'Hired Gun' (also with Lowry-designed cover) completes the attractive package. A fine copy.Chameleon songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan, like his friend and contemporary David Bowie, went through various personas and images, but is best remembered as a pioneer of the Glam-rock era of the early-mid '70s. His music career, like Bowie, began in the mid-sixties, as a troubadour folk singer under the guise 'Toby Tyler'. he then joined the cult proto-punk band 'John's Children' in early '67, who were a notorious live act but sold few records. He and their drummer Steve Peregrin Took created Tyrannosaurus Rex, a psychedelic-folk rock acoustic duo, playing Bolan's deceptively melodic songs--complete with J. R. R. Tolkien-influenced lyrics. This edition of Tyrannosaurus Rex released three albums and four singles, flirting with the charts, and getting airplay from Radio 1 DJ John Peel. A highlight of this era was playing at the first free Hyde Park concert in 1968. Mickey Finn then replaced Took after their first American tour when Bolan wanted to chnge direction- A rock'n'roller at heart (at first he played skiffle and worshipped Gene Vincent and Chuck Berry), Bolan began bringing amplified guitar lines into the duo's music, buying a vintage Gibson Les Paul guitar for an authentic sound (the same guitar later featured the 'T.Rex' LP sleeve, 1970). Suitably equipped, he let the electric influences come forward even further on 'A Beard of Stars', the final album to be credited to Tyrannosaurus Rex. It closed with a song, "Elemental Child", featuring a long electric guitar break influenced by Jimi Hendrix. Next, with producer Tony Visconti, Bolan wrote and recorded "Ride A White Swan", dominated by a rolling, backbeat and fuzzy, spiky electric guitar, the name was edited to 'T.rex' and the single became an overnight success and largely (and, in many ways, unwittingly) invented the style that would become glam rock and helped restore a brash and exciting feel, when rock bands had grown increasingly self-important. With his corkscrew hair and boyish good looks, Bolan's emergence heralded the start of a new era of British music which could be appreciated by both serious rock fans and pop-loving kids. The band grew to a quartet, with added bass and drums, and T.Rextasy took hold, with their simple, catchy, boogie- based rock producing a string of classic singles such as 'Get It On', 'Telegram Sam', 'Metal Guru', 'Children Of The Revolution', '20th Century Boy' and 'The Groover'. Ian Dickson has been photographing rock stars since 1972 and his work has appeared in Disc, Record Mirror, New Musical Express, Sounds, Vox, Mojo, Q, Rolling Stone and elsewhere. His first exhibition was in London in 1992 and several successful European shows followed.          Die Universität Heidelberg im Nationalsozialismus. Wolfgang Uwe Eckart, Volker Sellin, Eike Wolgast (Herausgeber), Mit 44 Abbildungen,

// guter Zustand // 1,1,1 ISBN 3540214429 Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 2500 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PORTRAITS: One hundred and sixty-one portraits of friends, family, artists, architects, writers, poets, and composers engraved on wood & Resingrave by Barry Moser from 1970 to 2006 and collected here for the first time

North Hatfield, Massachusetts: Pennyroyal Press, 2006. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Portraits have been a staple of Barry Moser's work since his first book, The Red Rag, was published in 1970.

A DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE: In Which the Words are Deduced From Their Originals, AND ILLUSTRATED IN THEIR DIFFERENT SIGNIFICATIONS, BY EXAMPLES FROM THE BEST WRITER. To Which are Prefixed, A History of the Language, and an English Grammar: IN TWO VOLUMES. This, the full title of the work now known as Johnson's Dictionary, exemplifies what is special about the book: no mere collection of word definitions, but a larger work, bold in aims, broad in purpose. Johnson had an appreciation for the beauties of fine language and a knowledge of literature surpassed by none. Even today, the quotations he chose read like a succinct overview of the canon of great English literature. Yet Johnson's Dictionary was also a living work; a picture of his age as well as a work of great intellectual rigour, a milestone in the development of the English language. Alongside literary language were slang terms, sudden interjections of the rough and tumble of the city amongst the measured classical lines of poetry. If language is forever changing, then a dictionary can never be finished. Nearly thirty years after its first publication, Johnson was still making revisions at the time of his death. Proof, if any were needed, of how close the Dictionary was to his heart. 'The work of a single person and composed in a period of time very inconsiderable when compared with the extent of the work' ADAM SMITH REVIEWING THE DICTIONARY IN 1755. Samuel Johnson's achievement can hardly be overstated. The great European dictionaries of societies such as the Académie Française and the Accademia della Crusca were produced by entire teams of scholars and generously funded, whereas Johnson worked practically alone. Dr Johnson's Dictionary has become part of the lexicon of Western culture. Robert Browning claimed to have read it 'in its entirety' to 'qualify' himself as a poet, while authors as diverse as Charles Darwin, Charlotte Brontë and Samuel Becket have referred to it, and indeed plundered its pages. So symbolic of authority and learning did the Dictionary become that, in Vanity Fair , Thackeray mischievously mocked the esteem in which 'The Great Lexicographer' was held, even having Becky Sharp hurl the dictionary from a carriage window. (Since the first edition weighs almost 26 pounds, Thackeray was presumably thinking of an abridged version.) Johnson's definitions are sometimes personal, revealing his prejudices and enthusiasms. His conservative politics and sincere High Church religious affiliation alongside his half-teasing, half-sincere strictures on Scotland form the basis for the famous definitions for oats, Tory and Whig. These revelations are engaging - as Johnson scholar Robert DeMaria comments, 'You get very close to the life of the mind of someone if you try to follow their reading habits.' The first edition of Johnson's Dictionary went on sale on 14 June 1755 at £4 10s. This was an impressively hefty sum. £4 was over a third of a housekeeper's salary for the year, while a maidservant was only paid £1 15s. A year. Even for a wealthy, established lawyer, the Dictionary would have represented an entire week's wages - perhaps equivalent to £3,000 in today's money. Those first editions nowadays sell at auction for around £10,000-£15,000, so perhaps the investment might eventually have seemed worthwhile. Producing Johnson's Dictionary: Copies of the original dictionary were hand-bound to order for the purchasers. Likewise, the Folio Society facsimile [Attributes: Soft Cover]
