Poisonous Plants at Table, and Prudence, The Cautionary Tale of a Picky Eater

Chicago: Sherwin Beach Press, 2006. Limited Edition. Stitched Binding. Fine. Niffenegger, Audrey. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall Signed by Artist and Bookmakers. No. 5 of 75 copies. A wonderfully unusual book, from its subject matter to its selections and composition. This work is really three books in one, with the first being a serious field guide to the plants by George Henslow, taken mostly from Bentham's "Handbook of British Flora", which used blocks by Walter Hood Fitch. The second is a set of four tongue-in-cheek party menus with each menu including a poisonous plant referenced in Henslow, by Dr. E. Coffin, "irregular practitioner". The third is an original short story about Prudence. Audrey Niffenegger both wrote the story and illustrated it with both ink drawings and watercolours; there are four watercolours each on 3-panel foldouts.***DESCRIPTION: Artist's book with four Giclee color prints; black-and-white letterpress prints and letterpress-printed text on Twinrocker handmade paper and Thieberge & Comar Chromatica; and Kozo Momi paper. Designed and conceived by Trisha Hammer, the three books are enclosed in a Japanese fabric-covered case which drops away to expose the sewing and non-adhesive binding, with a plant collection sleeve containing pressed Colchicum blossoms. Octavo size (approximately 9.25" tall), limited edition of 75 copies, this no. 5, SIGNED by the artist and bookmakers.***CONDITION: Fine.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Black Swan Green

London: Sceptre, 2006. First Edition. Cloth. As New/As New. Book Description: (London) Sceptre (2006)., 2006. The first British edition of the author's highly praised fourth book, a semi-autobiographical novel of a year in the life of a 13 year-old boy. Mitchell has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize twice, and his prior books had been praised for the complex structures and elaborate style. This book, a more straightforward narrative, was a notable departure for such a highly praised author, and earned excellent critical reviews and something of a cult following. A signed limited edition was later produced by Waterstone's, but this is the true first. Signed by the author, with the promotional diary. Also together with a proof dust jacket, which omits a photo credit and mention of one of the author's two children. All elements fine. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
