Three Cups of Tea [Rare Advance Copy Signed by Both Authors]

(NY): (Viking). (2006). The advance reading copy of the inspirational and controversial account of Mortenson, who, in response to kindnesses bestowed on him by locals when he was lost in Pakistan after an unsuccessful ascent of K2, vowed to return to that village and build a school -- a project that led to his founding the Central Asia Institute and to an ongoing effort that resulted in the building of, reportedly, more than 170 schools (mostly for girls) in impoverished regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and to Mortenson's repeatedly being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The hardcover edition sold only 20,000 copies; the paperback sold over four million copies in more than 40 countries and stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for more than four years, until it was revealed, first by author Jon Krakauer and later 60 Minutes, that Mortenson and Relin had taken liberties with the narrative and, in Mortenson's case, possible liberties with his financial relationship to the CAI. This advance reading copy is signed by Mortenson and also by David Relin, who at one point claimed sole authorship of the book, saying it was published with Mortenson as co-author over his objections. The promotional text boasts of a planned 6-city author tour: in the four years before the controversy hit, Mortenson's itinerary included more than 500 speaking engagements. Relin committed suicide in 2012. Fine in wrappers and custom clamshell case. This is the only advance copy signed by both that we have encountered. . First Edition. Softcover.

        Richard Meier Museums

New York: Rizzoli, 2006. First Edition of this monograph that details the museum projects undertaken by Richard Meier. Folio. Original boards. Signed by Richard Meier. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Richard Meier won both the Pritzker Prize (1984) and the AIA Gold Medal (1997). He has built the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, the City Hall and Central Library, and The Hague Getty Center, Los Angeles. Meier builds onto the style of the mid-20th century architects. The early work of Le Corbusier is a particular inspiration, and most of Meier's work has been inspired by Corbusier's idea, more at least, than anyone. Of course, Meier expanded from his predecessor. Some examples are the Villa Savoye and the Swiss Pavilion.

The Near Woods. Images and Design by Charles Hobson

San Francisco, CA: Pacific Editions. 2006. One of 26 lettered copies, each lettered (a to z) and signed in pencil by the author, Barry Lopez, and the artist, Charles Hobson from a total edition of 26+ copies which includes a few artist proof copies. Page size: 10 by 7 inches; 10pp; with double-page fold out containing a montotype image with pastel on German Etching paper reproduced as a digital pigment print that has been hand-colored with pastel and acrylic paint by the artist, titled "dream bear," and another another single page image on the verso of the fold of a standing bear, the two images signed in pencil by Charles Hobson. & Bound by Charles Hobson and Alice Shaw in original paper over boards bound in, the paper a reproduction of a drawing used to establish land grants in California, "Dosino del Rancho San Miguelito," circa 1841, reproduced with the permission of The Bancroft Library, is on a tan ground with images of trees, bears, rocks, housed, water, and roads all in tans and grays with blue and red and brown criscrossing the image which extends across both panels, buff label printed in black with title and author&#39;s name, new. A small vignette from the paper, that with the bear on two legs reaching for something in a tree, is collaged on second half-title and . The text was printed letterpress by Jerry Reddan who also printed 165 copies in 2005, bound in wrappers and not signed by either the author or artist, and without the images by Charles Hobson. At that time, these 26 lettered copies were left unbound for this special edition from Pacific Editions.& Barry Lopez&#39; story was first published in "Seneca Review" in 2000. It opens, "A bear came last night. It came down through the trees into the clearing around the house, most certainly in the bright moonlight." With this, the reader / viewer enters that elusive and magic space between the wild, deep woods and the civilized space of the humans. And, we are left wondering about the nature of knowledge and man&#39;s relationship to other living creatures on this planet. The bear, as imagined by Mr. Hobson, is certainly feral; but by placing him against a page of script which he almost totally obliviates, we wonder what he knows that we don&#39;t. A haunting story well served by the design and images of Charles Hobson. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

Quarter-leather binding with leather fore-edge strip, painted edges. Leather-jointed paste-paper doublures. Vellum panels with images and lettering underneath, present the title, 'London', across the front and rear boards. The overall effect is a counterpoint to the black and white images in the book.
