        The Book of Candles

Sacramento, CA: Co-Tangent Press. 2006. Artist&#39;s book / First Edition, one of 10 copies, each signed by the author / artist, William T. Vollmann on a page of the text as well as in the box housing the book. Page size: 19 inches x 16 inches; 75pp; (2pp. per folio sheet, 32 sheets in all + 2 unnumbered double-page spreads). The text is a suite of eight religious and blasphemous love-poems to prostitutes and was composed in the Philippines in 1995 and relief-printed on Rives de Lin paper by the author over a period of years (1997-2003). The text is previously unpublished and there are no immediate plans to publish the poems in any other edition. The text blocks were photo-etched magnesium plates as were some of the illustrations. Other illustrations were woodcuts done in Thailand and Cambodia on Chinese ulo wood. These were colored a la poupee and further hand colored with watercolors and acrylics. Housed in a sailcloth-covered basswood clamshell box which the artist / author has painted, collaged with hand-painted woodblock prints, and suitably adorned with gewgaws. The outside dimensions of the box are 31 inches high x 24 inches wide x 2.5 inches deep. The woodcut image on the underside of each box is different. Four Japanese "doughnut hole" coins have been screwed in to the underside of the box to comprise protective feet. Inside each box, a narrow channel, collaged with painted paper, runs around three edges, leaving the spine side open. Within this are set two wooden corner blocks mounted with selenium-splotched flower- engraved brass plates, a strip of painted walnut engraved with a print of a female nude, two engraved beeswax candles on engraved brass supports wrapped round with brass wire. Even the brass screws of these assemblies are engraved and rubbed with oil-based ink. On the inside of the spine are one engraved and inked aluminum plate and one engraved and inked brass plate which is signed and numbered. This is certainly the most labor- intensive project undertaken so far by William T. Vollmann&#39;s Co-Tangent Press but it is also the most beautiful. & William T. Vollmann, awarded the National Book Award in 2005 for his novel, EUROPE CENTRAL, has created a book unlike anything else we&#39;ve seen. The box and the woodcuts are hand- painted as well as printed making each copy of the book unique. The naive aspect of the art of this "journal" brings to mind Gauguin&#39;s NOA NOA, which was a book for the 19th century. This is most definitely a book for the 21st century. Using the sexual metaphor of male subjugation of women for the West&#39;s exploitation of the more "primitive" East, Vollmann creates imagery that we ignore at our peril. The beauty of the prints, which includes the vibrant colors, lead the reader / viewer to understand that a less sophisticated life has a beauty that cannot be extinguished. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/9851.jpg >Image.</A><br>

Luzern, Faksimile-Vlg., 2003, 2006 - 4° (24 x 17 cm), 448 S., 172 Miniaturen und dem goldschimmernden Rankenwerk; Kommentarbd.: 220 S. Transkriptionsbd.: 321 S., Brauner Saffianleder-Einband (aus dem 17. Jahrhundert); Kommentarbd. HLdr., beides in Acrylglasschuber. Transkriptionsbd: OLwd in Schuber, Tadellos.

        The Surinam Album

Folio Society. Near Fine. 2006. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall Leather-bound, facsimile edition with Commentary, housed in custom made, clamshell box. Numbered copy 250 of edition limited to 1000. 91 watercolour facsimiles from the Maria Sibylla Merian Collection in the British Museum, reproduced by digital photography and printed at Cambridge University Press on Furioso paper. Unfortunately, the 3 full-size prints designed for framing are missing. The album has been hand-bound by Smith Settle, Yeadon, Yorkshire, using Merian Wove tone rag-content paper for the leaves, Nigerian goat-skin green leather for the spine, and light brown cloth sides foil-blocked with a design by David Eccles based on plate 38, the hawkmoth. Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries&#146; great painters of plants and animals. The book is near fine: clean and unmarked without bumps or other defects but it has been enjoyed and is therefore not as tight as when new. The commentary in fine condition; and the clamshell box is near fine with some rubbing to edges as shown in photos. Overall, a very presentable example of this scarce and long out-of-print, limited edition from the Folio Society. Heavy/oversize book that will incur additional shipping costs. .

Red Thread Two Women. Images & Design by Charles Hobson

San Francisco, CA: Pacific Editions. 2006. One of 38 copies, all on BFK Rives and Strathmore papers incorporating hand-colored cotton and jute twine, each signed and numbered by the two poets and artist / designer, Charles Hobson, who assembled the edition with the assistance of Alice Shaw. Page size: 7-1/2 x 8 inches; 48pp. Bound: two signatures sewn in an accordion structure, fabric and paper over boards, red printed label on spine; housed in fabric-covered slipcase with red jute twine ties. The design of the book incorporates twine which actually weaves through the text. Inspired by the poem and evoking the experience explored in the text, the string / thread acts like a drawn line and can be moved around by the reader to change the "drawing" and the experience. The reverse folds of the book contain images of beets to accentuate characteristics of the poem. The string-like roots and the fullness and ripeness of the vegetable shapes recall and emphasize the individual words from the poem that the artist has chosen to reprint with the images: voice, awaken, heart, distance, breath, birth. &#11;The poets, Paula Sager and Lizbeth Hamlin, are practioners and teachers of Authentic Movement, a practice that is concerned with the exploration of relationship. In its simplest form there is a mover and a witness. The mover, with eyes closed, waits for an impulse to move. The witness follows or tracks his or her own experience while being present and attentive to the mover. Their poem is rhythmic and flowing, an exploration of insight, discovery and personal revelation which is aimed at showing how we as human beings long to relate.&#11;Charles Hobson created the images and reproduced them in hand-colored high resolution digital prints. The text was set by Mr. Hobson in Cantoria MT Light following the authors&#39; original spacing and printed offset. Each page is a visual delight with the text weaving, swooping and dipping around the red cotton and jute twine, sometimes under the threads with the ensuing shadows, but always carrying forward the theme of connectedness. The reader is propelled forward, following the motion of the words with the implicit motion of the "thread" of the book. Once again, Charles Hobson has taken text and conceived of, and created, a structure that embodies that text. The reader / viewer is the richer for it. We are presented with a concept, and it is explored in the text and then again in the book&#39;s structure. And the beets / beats ... ! They are the organic imagery that not only move the eye forward but hold the eye with pleasure for at least a beat or two. One could dance to this book, and I suspect that was the intent of authors and artist. See an Image.
