        The Halloween Tree

Gauntlet Press, 2005. Limited Lettered Edition. Full Leather. Fine/Near Fine+. A scarce beautiful Limited Lettered First Gauntlet Edition of Ray Bradbury's classic work, "The Halloween Tree," signed by Bradbury on the limitation page and lettered "EE" of only 52 Limited Edition Lettered copies created by Bradbury and Gauntlet Press. The set includes the beautiful metal laser-engraved lidded case (measuring 12 x 14") with the pop-up decorated metal Halloween Tree from the cover art of the book that lifts up from the face of the metal case complete with its dangling golden Halloween goblins. The lid of the case is lined with plexiglass and a golden metal goblin insignia fastened to the inside edge of the case is engraved with the letter of this limited edition, "EE." Also includes two beautiful 8 1/2 x 11" prints from the book's cover art each signed by Ray Bradbury in matching colored felt pen, and each is suitable for framing. Also includes the 9-page chapbook "Fragments," which contains fragments of 8 unfinished Bradbury short stories with cover art by Ray Bradbury. All of the pieces of this beautiful set are in nice condition but for small rubs on the plexiglass liner, a very small nick on the top spine of the dustjacket, all are very minor. Also the inside liner of the metal case seems slightly out of alignment in the upper left corner but the overall case sits square. . . .And given the contents? There is nothing comparable in the Bradbury world to this set -- The book is bound in beautiful black leather, without flaw, with 494 pages that include a typeset version of Bradbury's preferred text, the original manuscript (complete with handwritten corrections) Bradbury sent to Knopf publishing, a screenplay Bradbury wrote before he wrote the novel (in manuscript form) and the typeset version of his Hanna-Barbera screenplay. The front and back of the dustjacket are decorated with reproductions of oil paintings of Halloween trees done by Ray Bradbury. A handsome set, the first Gauntlet metal lidded box and tree, and one of its best productions, to say nothing of being the most elaborate production the Ray Bradbury -Gauntlet Press partnership could create to celebrate this classic book.

The General Solution of Maxwell's Electromagnetic Equations in a Homogeneous Isotropic Medium, especially in regard to the Derivation of special Solutions, and the Formulae for Plane Waves" (Heaviside) AND "On the Electromagnetic Effects due to the Motion of Electrification through a Dielectric" (Heaviside) WITH "On the Rays of Electric Force" (Hertz) in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science 27, 1889, pp. 29-50; pp. 324-339; pp. 289-298

      - FIRST EDITION OF THE SECOND AND THIRD HEAVISIDE PAPERS USING VECTOR ANALYSIS ON MAXWELL'S THEORY; THE SECOND PAPER ALSO PREDICTS WHAT IS NOW KNOWN AS CHERENKOV RADIATION, the emission of light by a charged particle passing through a transparent nonconducting liquid or solid material at a speed greater than the speed of light in that material. Maxwell's theory and equations are a group of partial differential equations that, along with the Lorentz force law laid the foundation of classical electrodynamics, classical optics, and electrical circuits underlie all modern electrical and communications technologies. "Heaviside was inspired to recast the long list of equations Maxwell had given in his Treatise into the compact set of four vector equations now universally known as 'Maxwell's equations'" (Nye, The Cambridge History of Science, 322). Dismissed by the larger scientific community because he was entirely self-taught, Oliver Heaviside was an English mathematician, electrical engineer, and physicist. Stunned by Maxwell's treatise, he began to tinker with Maxwell's original 20 equations describing the behavior of electric and magnetic fields (equations among the most remarkable and important ever devised); by the time he was done, Heaviside had reduced Maxwell's twenty equations to four and his vector calculus formulations were elegant and far more convenient to use and to date they remain the standard formulation taught and in use. Without Einstein and relativity or quantum mechanics, Heaviside then used his newly configured formulations to study electromagnetic radiation; specifically, he calculated the deformations of electric and magnetic fields surrounding a MOVING charge as well as the effect of it entering a medium more dense. In these, the second and third papers, Heaviside's work allowed him to "predict the existence of what is now called "Cherenkov radiation," the radiation created when the velocity of a charged particle like an electron exceeds the speed of light in a medium" (Wenner Collection). Cherenkov himself, in fact, rediscovered Heaviside's long forgotten work. In these papers, then, Heaviside "first predicted theoretically that a point charge (electron) would produce a conical wave front whenever it were to travel at a speed greater than the speed of light in a medium. Heaviside's prediction was before Einstein's theory of relativity, which holds that matter cannot travel faster than light in a vacuum but that matter can travel faster than light in a medium. Heaviside's prediction was before Einstein's theory of relativity, which holds that matter cannot travel faster than light in a vacuum but that matter can travel faster than light in a medium. At the time of Heaviside, even space was not considered to be a vacuum but to consist of an 'ether', and therefore, according to Heaviside, the conical wave front would be produced in the 'ether' as well as any other medium provided the electron or point charge travels at a speed exceeding that of light. Of course, electrons as well as other charged particles with sufficient energy can indeed travel faster than light in media where light travels at speeds less than its speed in a vacuum" (L'Annunziata, Radioactivity: Introduction and History, 466). The physicist B. B. Govorkov undertook a long study of Heaviside's work, concluding that he was "A genius [who] was half a century in advance of his time in his calculations and predictions, but unfortunately not understood by his contemporaries" (Govorkov 2005). ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS VOLUME: The first English translation of Hertz's important paper "Ueber Strahlen elektrischer Kraft", or "On the Rays of Electric Force". "This translation of Hertz's paper describes the first detailed account of his classic experiments in the production, propagation, polarization, reflexion and refraction of radiowaves? From a scientific point of view, undeniable experimental evidence had been obtained for Maxwell's theory of electromagne

Dismissed by the larger scientific community because he was entirely self-taught, Oliver Heaviside was an English mathematician, electrical engineer, and physicist. Late in life, he recalled his first look at Maxwell's treatise: "I saw that it was great, greater and greatest, with prodigious possibilities in its power... I was determined to master the book and set to work. I was very ignorant. I had no knowledge of mathematical analysis… It took me several years before I could understand as much as I possibly could. Then I set Maxwell aside and followed my own course. And I progressed much more quickly... It will be understood that I preach the gospel according to my interpretation of Maxwell" (Sarkar, History of Wireless, 232). Heaviside began to tinker with Maxwell's original 20 equations describing the behavior of electric and magnetic fields (equations among the most remarkable and important ever devised) and by the time he was done, Heaviside had reduced Maxwell's twenty equations to four; his vector calculus formulations were elegant and far more convenient to use and to date they remain the standard formulation taught and in use.         Of Woodland Pools, Spring-Holes & Ditches

Lone Oak Press, Petersham, Massachusetts 2005 - Oblong quarto. 89pp. From an edition of fourteen deluxe copies and 70 standard copies, this is one of five deluxe copies chosen to be specially bound for the international traveling exhibit "InsideOUT: Contemporary Bindings of Private Press Books," and as such, it does not include the extra suite or block as listed on the colophon. The exhibit, organized by British binding society Designer Bookbinders, married the works of nine private presses with the artistry of 59 binders from the United Kingdom and the United States. The text consists of selections from Henry David Thoreau's journal, which describe the vernal pools of New England that serve as breeding habitats for all manner of amphibians. Accompanying the text are twenty-eight engravings by Lone Oak Press founder Abigail Rorer, some of which are hand-colored by the artist. The detailed drawings brilliantly capture the teeming life and varied textures of these small pools. The book was designed by Michael Russem of the Kat Ran Press and includes an introduction by Thoreau scholar Bradley P. Dean. The designer binding, specially commissioned for the exhibit, is by Mark Esser. The boards are covered in full brown goatskin with leather onlays and gold and blind tooling that depict green reeds entering a rippling pool. The reeds are cleverly refracted as they pierce the water's surface. A repeating yellow leaf design frames the image, continuing inside onto the green goatskin doublures. Opposite, the marbled paper flyleaves are reminiscent of stones and pebbles. Housed in a brown cloth clamshell box. As a whole, Esser's work evokes the deep peace found in nature and the surprises that lurk just below the surface. Esser developed the curriculum and was the first instructor for the hand bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, and now works as a private binder in Massachusetts.
