Offprint, with its own pagination, from Procès-verbaux de la Société d'Histoire Naturelle de l'Ile Maurice, du 6 octobre 1842 au 28 aou^t 1845, [1846].With: (2) FLOURENS, Pierre, [Louis-Isidore?] DUPERREY and Etienne SERRES. Offprint, with its own pagination, from Comptes rendus des séances de l'Académie des Sciences, XXX (1850).2 works in 1 volume. Small folio & large 8vo. 19th-century black h

      - Ad 1: WorldCat (1 copy, as issued in the proceedings); ad 2: Cohen, French encounter with Africans, p. 242 & note 86 on pp. 340-341; for De Froberville’s work in Mauritius: Vaughan, Creating the Creole Island: slavery in eighteenth-century Mauritius (2005), p. 267. Two offprints discussing the researches of the French ethnographer Eugène de Froberville (1790-1871) in Mauritius on the languages and races of sub-equatorial East African, the first one published in Mauritius. The first is especially interesting, because it is an account of a lecture De Froberville gave at the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences of Mauritius, apparently on 8 February 1844, and his lecture does not appear to have been published on its own. The present account, comprising primarily long quotations from De Froberville's lecture (including an 11-page comparative table of East African languages), may therefore be the best record of his lecture.Bound before the offprints is a signed autograph letter from De Froberville, written in Port Louis, Mauritius, on 7 August 1846. It does not name the person he is addressing, but it seems likely to have been sent to Louis Bouton concerning his publication of De Froberville's lecture. A signed autograph note by Bouton on the first page of the 1846 offprint identifies him as the author of the parts that are not directly quoted from De Froberville. With the second offprint foxed, but both otherwise in very good condition. A rare record of early French research into East African languages.

An Invitation To British Columbia, A Letter From T.E. Lawrence To Martin A. Grainger. Preface by Jeremy Wilson, Foreword by Don Stewart.

8vo., original speckled faux parchment stamped in black. Printed on handmade paper. Frontispiece, pp.20 plus the facsimile of the original letter. The letter facsimile was printed on vegetable parchment from polymer plates by David Clifford. A fine copy. First edition of this previously unrecorded Lawrence letter. Limited edition of 50 numbered copies signed by Jeremy Wilson and Don Stewart (an extra 20 copies were printed for private distribution.) A brief but illuminating letter, previously unrecorded (or published), by T.E. Shaw (i.e. T.E. Lawrence) written in 1929 to Martin Allerdale Grainger, BC's first chief forester, in response to his suggestion that Lawrence consider retiring in the province. The letter is reproduced in facsimile and type. Noted Lawrence scholar Jeremy Wilson (a co-proprietor of the Castle Hill Press) wrote the preface, and bookseller Don Stewart (MacLeod's Books) wrote a brief essay on Grainger's life in BC. As a frontispiece, the book features a wood engraving by George Kuthan, the block borrowed from the extensive collection of his original blocks at the Rare Books & Special Collections Library at the University of British Columbia. The engraving's BC logging image is particularly suited to a book associated with Grainger, the author of Woodsmen of the West (1908) and one of the province's first chief foresters.

Small 8vo (15 x 10 cm). Modern red sheepskin.

      - Anuario de estudios Bolivianos, 13 (2005), p. 680; Parke-Bernet 12 March 1968 (Carbone auction), lot 2664 (this copy); not in KVK & WorldCat; Medina; Palau. An extremely rare "Novena" prayer book perhaps first compiled in 1714, when the city of La Paz in Bolivia (after surviving an earthquake) made Christ its patron and erected an image under the name "Señor de las Piedades". After a preliminary note on the events of 1714 (pp. 3-4) the book gives orations and prayers for each of the nine days of the Novena. We have located neither another copy of the present Argentine edition nor an earlier edition of the same text, but the title-page indicates that an earlier edition existed. The prayers for the nine days are followed by a closing note with additional prayers, which includes a reference to another book: Juan Gabriel de Contreras, Despertador eucarístico, Madrid, 1786, which is known in the literature. With bookplate and stamp. The binder has trimmed the margins, just touching the text on 1 page, but without loss, and there is a stain on the title-page, but the book is in very good condition. The binding has some tears and chips to the spine and corners, but is still good.

The Book of the Goetia of Solomon the King - 1 of 14 fullbound

HELLFIRE BOOKS 2005 - The Book of the Goetia of Solomon the King Limited to 72 copies ONE OF 14 FULL LEATHER A facsimile of Aleister Crowleys own vellum-bound volume with annotations in his hand housed at the Warburg Institute University of London, containing copious notes, drawings of spirits and magical formulae both from Crowleys vellum copy and from a camels-hair binding copy owned by his friend and disciple J.F.C. Fuller. The volume opens with a curious self-portrait of Aleister Crowley in his magical persona of 'Perdurabo', evoking the great demon Paimon to visible appearance, above him is inscribed his magical motto with the grade 5'=6' of the A.A. magical tradition, derived in part from the teaching structure of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Crowley shows himself holding the feather of truth, and wearing the symbolic horns and side-curl. Paimon is shown here as described in the Lemegeton, astride a dromedary rearing up out of the Triangle of art. Opposite the sketch is a series of notes dated to 1903 covering letter and number symbolism, below is a paragraph of notes by the collector and Crowley disciple Gerald Yorke (from whose collection the book originally came) detailing the history of the volume. Throughout the rest of the work Crowleys sketches of demonic entities jostle with the text, beings he saw and conversed with press against the margins of the book as against the borders of the mind. Included in the annotations is Fullers inscribed copy of a series of demonic entities '.see by W.B.Yeats wife at a Ghost-Club dinner.' and which were later printed in Crowleys pseudepigraphic 'Bagh-i-Muattar', the pornographic work dubbed 'The Scented Garden of Abdullah the Satirist of Shiraz' privately printed by Crowley in 1910 where he refers to them as the clairvoyant results of '.a well-known Irish lady.' Limited to 72 copies, each numbered after one of the spirits of Solomons Brazen Vessel. Hand bound at the Hell Fire Club. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Th. G.
